The staff is so nice at O"Neil's that I almost want to give them another star just for attitude and effort, but the food is expensive and a little uneven.

It sort of a nice place to sit outdoors because they have a patio (vs the inside that feels very dark and dated), only there is not enough out there to remind you that you are not in the suburbs and not basically sitting on Green Bay Road.  If these things don't bother you, you're set for a nice day or evening al fresco!

One of the most tasty things they make is the Grilled Garlic Shrimp.  It's  only 4 shrimp, but they are huge and well-cooked with a LOT of garlic and spices.  It's in the shell, but we in our family are shell-eaters, so this is not an issue.  I can recommend this dish with confidence.

Recently I had the Gazpacho, which was very good. Then I had the Curry Chicken Flat Bread, which was not good at all.  Afterwards, I shared a dessert with my mom:  an ice cream/praline cookie thing that was just ok, but notable because of its gigantic portion.  This is what I mean by uneven.  And for the prices ($15-20 entrees), I feel that the food should be consistent and better.

I think that I'd go back for a big salad for lunch, sitting outdoors with a friend or with a good book.  It's that kind of place, one that I would go to without high expectations, but knowing that I would always receive service with a big smile, at a location that's conveniently close to home.

Dinner itself was OK - perfectly acceptable fare for the price.

Where the restaurant fell apart was in the take-home. We had the busser wrap up two of our dishes. The one was a pesto that was wrapped in such a way that the package leaked and got oil over my (new) pants. We also had him wrap the duck and asked for bones and all. Well, no soup for us as the bones were not included in the doggy bag.

Sorry, but it's all part of the experience and the take-home ruined what otherwise would have been a good experience.

O'Neil's has been a staple on the North Shore scene for a while now. The atmosphere is a on the nicer side, and it's a nice place to sit outside when the weather is warm.

Great chicken caesar that Julia Roberts supposedly ordered a lot when she was in Winnetka filming Ocean's 12. Good salmon as well.

This place is so small and comfy but still manages to be upscale.  The salads are always great, their soups are also amazing.  Tonight I had the tomato basil soup and it was phenomenal.  I think I could eat such hearty goodness all day long.  Their grilled shrimp (when on the menu) is always done right, and their salmon is outstanding.
The place is decorated in a french country style, and offers outdoor seating when the weather is right.

I would really recommend this place for a laid back dinner for suburbanites when you want good food, but don't necessarily want to hike out to the city.

Delicious food and great service. It's a nice, small and friendly place. My family sat in a comfy booth, with a perfect view to the kitchen and got to watch the chefs and staff at their best. The dishes were presented beautifully and they all tasted great! My folks went straight to their favorite entree, the Cioppino, a fish stew tons of fresh ingredients. I had the fish special with mushrooms and asparagus which was recommended by our waitress and indeed proved to be quite tasty. Dessert was a surprising slice of Tres Leches cake (at an Italian restaurant?), that was pretty satisfying as well. The only thing I was not impressed with was the Caesar salad. The dressing was weak, and I preferred my ma's balsamic vinaigrette house salad much better!

Your experience at O'Neils will vary completely depending on where you sit. If it's nice outside and you sit on the patio, you'll have a pretty pleasant lunch. Inside, if you're in the first room with the bar, the atmosphere is cruddy. If you're in the bigger dining room, you'll feel like you're at an upscale restaurant. It's pretty schizophrenic. The food is not bad, and only mildly overpriced if you're there for lunch--pretty tasty soups, salads and sandwiches. At dinner, you'll be sitting in the nicer dining room and you'll get overcharged for pretty average food.

My favorite sit down lunch spot in the north 'burbs.  Their salads are fantastic, fresh, varied.  I get their oriental chicken salad but every salad is always tempting for me.  They've got tables outside for the warmer months.  Definately a "ladies who lunch" feel but who's surprised with their lunch menu full of such delectable salads.
