One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
My son has been going here for 3+ years and he absolutely loves it. It's so family oriented that we consider Professor a part of our own family. He started in their preschool Little Ninjas program and now he is in their kids program, well on his way to his black belt. The instructors are well trained in dealing with all types of children's behaviors. They offer daycamps during the summer, during most school springbreaks and winter breaks. They also offer birthday party packages.
My daughter started with One Martial Arts when she was about 5 or 6 in the Little Ninja program, but she quickly progressed to the Kids Karate program. After checking out four martial arts programs in the Sunset, we chose One Martial Arts because: 1. It is clean and tidy. 2. The teachers are oriented towards kids and are constructive/positive. 3. They teach more than karate but also good family and life values (teamwork, focus, discipline, good sportsmanship, respect). My daughter is now a brown belt, and still loves the program. We believe this program has taught her a lot of skills, and indeed she is both a fine scholar and athlete.
While some classes can be crowded, try and find the less crowded classes during the week as opposed to Saturday. The school also hosts an annual annual picnic in Speedway Meadows which is a lot of fun for the whole family. We give it a double thumbs up.
Our 4 1/2 year old daughter loves One Martial Arts! We had the opportunity to try another martial arts place on Lombard (whose name I shall not list), however their monthly dues and teaching practices made us look elsewhere after our first month was over. They also taught Kempo Karate, however didn't include the additional life skills teachings like fire safety, stranger awareness, and danger recognition among others like they do at One Martial Arts (...hows that for a bonus!).
At One Martial Arts, their positive reinforcement is second to one. In fact, they are number ONE. Whether it be the skills merit badges that your child can earn, or the special life skill stripes they can also wear proudly on their belt, One Martial Arts not only teach discipline, but also expose them to the core fundamentals (focus, teamwork, self-sontrol, memory, balance, fitness and coordination) prior to teaching the more intricate martial arts moves.
I myself went through Shotokan Karate as a child so I can say first hand what to expect. However, the instructors at One Martial Arts make learning fun for kids! If your kid has fun, the learning part stays with your child longer. The "games" they play are great for the kids and build up their martial arts fundamentals without them even knowing it.
We have been at One Martial Arts for over a month now, and I can definitely see the difference in our daughter. Her self esteem is way up and she's so proud that she shows off her kata (martial arts routine) to her Grandparents!
I love this place. I'd recommend this to any parent like me. They don't just teach katas and give you belts. They make it fun to learn and they really focus on reinforcing family and other values in a positive way. They've helped my kid build up his self esteem and respect.
This is a great place to work out! The entire staff really cares about the folks who go there. I've been going to their aerobic classes on average about three times a week and I can't imagine a more thorough and fun way work out. You will get in shape quickly if you go to One Martial Arts on a regular basis. And you'll enjoy the people as well.
Everyone there is very professional, friendly, and knows how to engage the children. We just started recently and my 5.5 yr old and 4 yr old boys seem to love it. I usually have to spend a whole day convincing my children to go to a class but they seem happy to go when I pick them up from school. They give out patches to the children at the end of each class and my boys get excited when they receive them. I love it when my sons ask me what does discipline mean (it's one of the patches) instead of telling me what toy he wants.
Thumbs up all the way!
Both my son (14) and daughter (11) have been taking Karate at One Martial Arts for 3+ years. They love it, and it has been very good for them. Professor and his entire top-notch staff do an excellent job of motivating the kids and keeping them enthusiastic about the martial arts. Both of my kids are Brown-Black belts, so yes, they can defend themselves. However, they have learned so much more from One Martial Arts--confidence, discipline, focus, respect--that help them in every aspect of their lives. It shows in their relationships with each other, their friends, teachers, and in their school work. I was recently driving my daughter to her lesson, and she said, "Karate makes me happy." And that makes me happy. I highly recommend One Martial Arts.
i'm someone who goes through life exerting myself as little as possible. walking quickly causes me to lose my breath. i circle the block for up to an hour to find a parking spot that's not up a hill from my house. and i'd rather walk at a leisurely pace and have to wait for the next bus than trot a little bit to catch the one that's right there, and risk breaking a sweat.
this also means that getting in shape requires someone who will wheedle, cajole, encourage, and threaten me in turns until i do it. this is where the fine folks at one martial arts come in. the cardio kickboxing classes are great for people of all levels of fitness and self-motivational ability, from the flabby and apathetic (me) to the toned and hyper (that lady who stands in the front and wears those midriff-baring tops). the instructors are all very sweet and nice--they learn your name in the first class--but they will call you out if they see you flagging and guilt trip you just enough to keep you going.
the owner, brannon, used to teach these classes at gyms before starting his own place. they call him "the professor," which is a little strange and a bit x-men (what did professor x have a doctorate in, anyway?), and he's kind of the boss daddy of the establishment. all the other cardio instructors are fantastic too. they teach classes mornings and evenings during the week, and one class a day on weekends. you can pay class-by-class ($30 for drop-ins, $25/class if you buy 10 at once), but most people buy a monthly membership (i think it's between $119 and $149 per month depending on how long you commit for) and that gives you unlimited classes for a month. as long as you come at least 2x a week (on average), it's worth it.
and not to get all curves on you, but it's a really supportive environment if you're trying to get in shape again, or for the first time ever. if you're falling behind, or you can't get the steps, no one will laugh or look at you funny. plus you get that cheesy 80's aerobics group motivation effect, which i am not ashamed to say i very much enjoy.
I've been a member there for the past 2 years for their cardio kickboxing classes. It's the best place in town for sure. Before I paid my money I researched and I tried places. When they offer you Cardio Kickboxing classes at the GYM (which I tried more than once) you can't even compare those to the workout you can get at ONE. Be prepared to work hard, it's not easy for those who just start, but don't get discouraged --- the harder you work, the luckier you get! Remember...
Brannon who is the owner and my favorite instructor is the best. He is welcoming, supportive and will make you feel good about yourself no matter what shape, size you are. When he teaches he motivates you to be your best, to your hardest and never give up. I love working out with him and I know you will love it too.
Other teachers are great as well. Jennifer is a kick-ass instructor and she will work you out hard!!! Friday is the day with her...
They also have I think twice a year so called "body-challenge" program where Brannon will work with those who sign up, he will review your food chart every week. I lost weight that way. He helped me in so many ways. Just being there I already feel energized and feel like I am a part of a family that motivates me. It's not only a work out for your body, but for your mind as well.
Check it out. They usually have 1 free week to try out. Have a good schedule for those who work and offer Cardio Kickboxing classes 7 days a week.
I'm a member of One Martial Arts cardio-kickboxing classes and I absolutely enjoy it! Classes are offered 7 days a week and the workout is great! It entails cardio and weight and strength training. the best thing is that most of the people in the cardio classes go almost every day and have been for months or years that you see the same familiar faces. You get to know each other and enjoy the workout with not strangers, but more like friends. The staff is friendly and Professor is a great positive role model for ALL members of the establishment.
Not only is it a great place for cardio kickboxing - i would highly encourage people to have their children of all ages join the martial arts classes. I watch how the instructors teach the classes and they are nothing but postive and encouraging towards children but at the same time they build discipline. They stress the importance of family, self-esteem, discipline and well being.
Adult classes are also offered and i see the same positivity in those classes.
Try it out! There are often specials for newbies that want to give this place a try with no obligation.
I've been taking martial arts classes here for 5 years now, I work here, and I sometimes take cardio classes.
Karate program: It's great for little kids, and the adult program is just starting to get a little more hold as well. The only age group that doesn't really even exist is the teenagers...Most kids tend to quit before they get too old...but not me! Classes vary though, many people only go once/week either on Fridays or Saturdays or you can sign up for twice a week, as well.
Other then that...All the instructors are supportive and give you one-on-one attention. Classes are offered 6 days a week. I've seen kids as young as 3.5 start off in the Little Ninjas program. I find it very good for kids because they seem to learn important skills such as manners, discipline, etc...All the "martial arts" skills are useful in life as well....and Professor stresses that constantly! Call and ask for a free introductory lesson with Professor, and then sit in on one of the classes to really get a feel for the dojo.
Day Camps: I work at the day camps and it's a good way to get kids to try out karate to see if they like it first. A lot of kids have started out in camp and have ended up signing up for regular classes. The Day Camps are Bay Area Parents' Award-Winning camps and are offered during the summer break, winter break, spring break, and some holidays, even. Sign up by the day or week, and the earlier you sign up, the more of a discount you receive.
Cardio Classes: Even after taking karate classes for almost 10 years ( I switched dojo's) I still was pushed hard for the cardio classes. I've taken Gayle's, Iris', and Kim's...Jennifer isn't there anymore...They are all very good. If Gayle knows your name, she will work you hard! Iris is also the same, and Kim is very supportive and good when teaching. Be prepared to get a good workout...Try it out first, you get a week free to try classes out. There are classes 7 days/week and there are a lot offered. I know Mondays & Wednesdays evening classes are at 6:30 pm...and Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (evening) they are at 7:30 pm. Saturdays are at 11:15 am and Sundays are at 9:30 am.Mon-Fri they also have morning classes, I'm not sure of the time. Classes are usually an hour. They usually offer Day-After EXTREME cardio classes after Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc...
I think I covered everything, will update if I think of anything else. =)
They've started offering YOGA classes. Yay! Tuesday in the evening at 5:45pm and Thursday mornings at 9:15am. I took one class on a Thursday morning and it was SO NICE doing yoga. There were only 3 other people so it was definitely nice to have individual attention. It's an added bonus to having the mirror to check your position. This is great to have as part of your cardio membership and you won't feel weird because it's not like everyone does yoga. Great way to try out yoga if you've never done it without feeling intimidated.

normally i review places that put pounds on my waist, today i'm reviewing a place that takes those [some] pounds off!!
if my friends saw me doing the cardio kickbox stepping, punching, dancing type aerobics they'd initially laugh out loud at me. most classes have a good mix of men and women, but at first glance this looks pretty girly...
until the second half of class! everyone whips out their individual punching bag and commences to wail with everything they got!
i joined the gym after a 7 day free trial in mid dec. and the staff knows me by first name! i've been dying to be a known regular at an establishment where the guy behind the counter knows me on a first name basis. i just didn't think it would happen where the guy was throwing punches instead of flipping burgers.
My son has been going here during spring break camp as his preschool is closed. He seems to really enjoy it and is excited to get up and go in the morning. He likes wearing a uniform and comes home with a sense of accomplishment. He is 4.5 years old and he never has talked about 'earning' rewards as he does with One Martial Arts. He wants to continue classes even after camp is over. It has been professional, friendly, and fun.
It's a great place for children. Professor is wonderful with the little ones and teaches them good principles. It's family oriented and inclusive.
