I like this place, they have tons of books and they are only a dollar each!

The downside is that you really have to dig to find something, but there are some great deals if you have the patience!

me: awesome selection! so are these all a dollar a piece?
    cashier lady: um, yes.
me: great, i have 31 books
cashier: that'll be 35 including tax
    me: great!

okay, so the books turned out to be 50 cents a piece, or "2 for a dollar."  yes, it was half my fault for not paying attention to the sign out front, yes i can try to understand that in a moment of greed she may have made a huge mistake... but still, i feel this event deserves some attention.  so, beware, the books are great, and obviously cheap--even at a dollar a piece, so i can't discourage yelpers from going--JUST BE CAREFUL.

ps--i did get my money back, but it was alot trickier than it should have been, oh well.

Yes, the books are very loosely organized -- BUT they're all a dollar!!  I can't expect them to do the Dewey decimal for a dollar!

I was hoping to find certain books (Banksy, vegan deserts, etc), and I didn't find any of them.  But, I did walk out with a massive pile of great finds anyway.  I got a color ID book for orchids!! and a calendar everyone compliments on, etc.  Plus my friend found some awesome coffee table picture books, and a great book on quantum physics.

If you have time to putz about in Burbank, this is the place to do it.  Walk around, carouse through their vast selection of junk and gems, and take home a few nice reads (for a buck a pop!).

I was a little frustrated when I went in thinking I could "look" for what I wanted.  But once I found my "section", great finds were leaping out at me (the same for my buddy).  The $1 orchid book alone (scarcely opened, with glossy color photos), would've cost $12 at any other used book store...

The only thing is that you should bring cash, because there is a minimum to swipe the plastic. Oh, and don't forget to bring some patience...

What the hell happened to this place?
A couple years ago I used to find great Sci Fi/Fantasy books almost every time I came here, but now unless you're a Tom Clancy fan or something you'll basically never find a book by any famous author.
I used always get Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke books.
Once I even found the Lord of the Rings trilogy all in one book (for $1 of course).
Nothing like this exists here anymore.
It only gets more than one star because the books are so damn cheap and you can certainly find helpful reference material for health, computers, business/finance, law and stuff like that.

There is a decent selection of books but the two "cashiers" I had are horrible. During the whole transaction, one of them was bitching about guy problems and not a single word was said to me--oh wait, except when I asked if they take cards, to which they both snottily replied "YES!!!" and went right back to their story. No hi, no bye, no thank you, no "here's your total." I realize you work at a dollar bookstore, but you don't have to be such assholes.

Pray be frank, One Dollar Book Heaven is more like One Dollar Book 7-Eleven*: tons of stuff, mostly shit, displaying various levels of abuse and misuse, all for the low low price of one dollar.

Sounds appealing? It should; "mostly shit" is not akin to "shitty." One Dollar Book Heaven has so many books for sale that, if you search enough shelves for a long enough time, you will find something you absolutely need.

This is not a place to buy great literature, although you may occasionally happen upon a classic; this is the place to get a pop-lit fix, as evidenced by the stacks of true-crime books (Capote this ain't), serial novels, and novels by those authors best referred to by their full names--Janet Evanovich, James Patterson, Nicholas Sparks, that dude who writes the lawyer books, Jackie Collins, Mary Higgins Clark, and basically any other author whose books are sold at chain grocery stores. This is not a bad thing--popular novels are popular for a reason, even if they are not necessarily your thing--but it's certainly something to keep in mind.

All told, One Dollar Book Heaven is a three star kind of place with a wonderful mission--cheap books!--which is in and of itself worth an additonal star, for a total of four stars. That'll be four dollars, thanks.

*Rule of thumb: don't put any more deep thought into these things than I do--which is to say very, very little--and we'll both be fine. And, c'mon, you can't deny the appeal of the "heaven/7-Eleven" rhyme; if anything, I suspect you are jealous for not having thought of it first.

I love books. I love cheap prices. I love garage/rummage sales. In order with common mathematical principles; one would thus summarize that I love this book store which sells used books for a dollar. Sadly, this store disappoints. You know when you go into a doctor's office and the table in the waiting room has the oldest, half ripped issues of generic magazines and Danielle Steele novels and you therefore have to endure the pain of going to the doctor for whatever illness but also the horrible agony of having nothing to read? Well, this is where those doctors purchase their books...

Don't get me wrong, there is an extensive selection in regards to the categories (magazines, paperbacks, reference books, music, poetry, history, etc); but the actual books themselves are not that great. For instance, the music selection consisted of Nsync sticker books and a Christina Aguilera inspiration booklet/cd-rom narrated by the Genie in a Bottle herself prior her stripped days. Honestly though, you can't be too demanding when the price is as low as a dollar. You can get get lucky and find a rare or old find for a dollar and then you will have a happy day! You should also head here if you need a dictionary or cook book. Otherwise, I suggest spending a few extra dollars and heading to The Illiad in North Hollywood a few minutes from the One Dollar Book Store where the selection is 100x more intense and only a few bucks more per book.

This morning, while I was laying on my lovely Tempurpedic, I yelled in excitement, "I have the day off!"

What to do? What to do? I ask myself while twirling my curls lazily, in bed. If you've ever had the pleasure of sprawling on a beautiful mattress like mine, you'd understand.

    The options started with these:

    Hike--Accomplished that this week.
    Beach--Been there recently.
Museum--I've visited plenty in my short life. I need a break from this type of intellectual stimulation.

How about something educational, something that will bring pure joy into my life while being easy on my bank account?

There it was, the answer to the question of how to occupy my lethargic self today. BOOKS! Cheap, dusty, thought provoking BOOKS!

I found this magnificent bookstore via Yelp and HAD to check it out myself, with an open mind, of course. No need for a preconceived book list, just waltz in, browse, and buy whatever catches my eyes.

This my friend, is exactly what I did.

Burbank has changed from my crazy days in high school but there seems to be a small town ambiance that still nestles the city, at least this part of San Fernando Blvd. I managed to find FREE parking a block away from the book shop. No traffic and wallet friendly parking always makes the journey much more pleasant.

Once I stumbled in, bright eyed, I was amazed by the large selection of books in all genres, magazines up the wazoo (National Geographic heaven), and a small selection of cd's and records. I felt like I struck gold. In fact, gold is equatable to books in my mind. As a former student of English Literature, books are gold. Don't persuade me to believe otherwise, please.

Each aisle is sectioned off in its respective subject; Fiction, Health, Textbooks, References for Writers, Sexuality, History, Comics,  Cook books, Children's stories, Teachers manuals, Foreign books and plenty others I've forgotten already. Though out of order, there are plenty of books to be seen and read. There is a whole new world that's waiting to be discovered, as long as you step away from the boob tube. This, I promise you. Have patience, browse the aisles, and strike gold. I sure did.

I struck it rich with these great finds:

    -Christopher Marlowe: The Complete Plays
    -Vanity Fair: William Makepeace Thackeray
    -Madame Bovary: Gustave Flaubert
-Four Centuries of Great Love Poems: From various fantastic poets
-Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama (Only charging a dollar for a novelty like this is like highway robbery. I'll take it).

Classics, poems, and an assortment of short stories? I was sold.

Total cost was roughly $5 and change, including tax. That's much less than gold to some but fairly equal in my brown eyes. Another bonus: I'm undoubtedly pleased that no gold pans, mines, or rivers were involved in my journey. No Bridge to Nowhere commotion and flash backs to the Gold Rush involved here. When you embark this hike, you'll see what I mean.

The down sides to this wonderful book store are:

I appreciation a puntastic puns on the name of the book store. Maybe add a little spice to it. Because "One Dollar Book Store" is not very original, though I do admire the straight to the point delivery.

Another downfall to the book store, is there moving on August 15th. Where you ask? I have no idea, nor do the clueless employees. But, I'm glad to say that I've visited this goldmine and will track them down at the next location.

If you do decide to visit before me, please leave some classics for a woman who enjoys a book or two or three. Thanks in advance, my fellow book worm.

Now, if you could excuse me. I'm going to read one of my purchases in my comfortable bed.

After reading Jackie G.'s review on this place, I decided to drive out to Burbank and check out the One Dollar Book Store.  There were a lot of people rummaging through the shelves and boxes of books on the Sunday I visited.  One of the first things I did was go up to the girl behind the counter and ask her where ODBS was relocating to.  She hardly looked at me and just said, "We dunno yet."  I walked away feeling pretty dejected.

What made it worse was that I heard a few other customers ask her the same question later and she elaborated on her answers with them ("We don't know yet, but probably close by.  We're making way for the new Halloween store.).  WTF?  Why did I deserve such a rude answer?  It just sort of dampened my experience there. Gosh, why am I such a sensitive person sometimes?!  :(

Anyway, I managed to find a few children's books I thought would be useful for my clients as well as a copy of The Club Dumas, which I had wanted to read since seeing it at Costco a while back.  Six books for less than $7 is definitely a bargain!  If you don't mind the stale book smell and the chaos, you should check out the book store.  I can't tell you where it's currently located though because I think they moved out of the Magnolia store a couple weeks ago.

When I was little, my Mom would take me to libraries all the time, and either have me with her while she browsed the stacks, or drop me off in the Children's section.  My love affair with novels (mostly of the supernatural and horror genres) took roots at a very early age.  My home atheneum is pretty vast at present, so much so that my roommate forbids me to buy new books.  But I do so anyway....

The One Dollar Bookstore, located in the heart of the Burbank Media Center, is one of my favorite places to find rare novels, like a British edition Charles Grant, or a mint condition Dorothy Daniels hardback from the 60's, all for only $1.00 a piece.  I've spent many an afternoon perusing the titles, and never leave without at least one new requisition.

Because of the high volume of product, organization here is a little challenging; books are organized by category.  Nothing is in strict alphabetical order. Now while this may bother some, I love it! I like being able to hunt through all of the editions.  It makes me feel like a treasure hunter, or Noah Wyle in those Librarian movies.  Also, it exposes one to new writers they may not be aware of.  Credit and debit card minimum is $10.00, so I would advise bringing cash.  Definitely a must visit for any true bibliophile.

I love to read. I love bookstores. And I really heart cheap bookstores! Most items here are truly just a buck!

This place is truly remarkable. It sells nothing but outdated publications but I found some crazy stuff here! There were books on the shelves that I had when I was a kid!

The bookstore is not what you call "organized" but that's part of the fun. I found really funny coloring books by just rifling through the mounds of books. It's like going through old stuff at someone's yard sale!  Some books make good gag gifts!

It's very rare to find books that are in mint condition and not stained. But what do you expect for $1?

Treat it like a scavenger hunt...

Every book is $1! Sure, some aren't worth that much but some are totally a great bargain. I got a couple of books here yesterday but restrained myself from buying more. Especially the outdated travel guides, diet books from the '90s and obviously much "loved" (read: crayon scrawled) children books.

There are random chairs everywhere in the aisles in case you want to read something then and there.

Half the store seems to be empty boxes. It looks kind of messy and dusty over there. Some of the shelves (especially the paperbacks) are terribly sorted. In fact, there was one sign saying they weren't sorted at all.

But it was $1 a book. If you're a bibliophile, this is a great place. And probably a good deal if you have racked up as many library fines as I have.

    $10 minimum on credit cards.

My favorite thing about dollar bookstores (besides the price) is that only true bookworms would go to a place like that. Yay for ragtime playing over the speakers and cookbooks from the '80s. It's not the kinda place you'd go to if you were looking for something in particular. (In fact, even if you knew what you were looking for, it would most likely take some sweat and blood to find it in this store!) Rather, try to hunt for a diamond in the rough. Something you've never heard of. Although I did find a couple things that were more well known, like Peter Mayle and Bill Bryson; I like my travel books!

Almost half the store consists of "new arrival" books that have yet to be sorted. You can find some of your best books in this section! It was fun watching people browse the titles slowly, and then, with eyes suddenly as big as saucers, dive forward and snatch a hidden gem of a book out of the shelf. At that very moment, seeing that book is the most exciting thing in the world! Hurrah, it's refreshing to see people go ga-ga over dusty old books instead of the latest version of the iPhone or iPod or iWhatever.

Unfortunately, they said they'd be moving temporarily? I went the night before they were allegedly moving, and the employees had no idea where they were moving to. Fer serious??

The One Dollar Bookstore didn't make me an avid reader.  Instead I became a book collector!  I buy books faster than I read them.  The store is located in middle of everything--downtown Burbank, Burbank Town Center, shops, restaurants, etc--and I'd describe it as a modern urban village.  I live in Burbank for the time being, and I often visit this store.  You should bring cash unless you plan on spending at least $10, which is the credit card minimum.

If you're patient and look hard enough, you'll find some real gems.  Occasionally I find books I'm looking for (some for class, some for pleasure), but a lot of times I'll find and buy things I wasn't originally looking for.  So why buy more books?  Well, it's a dollar and you can't beat that.  I buy books on http://half.com for as low as $0.75, but I have to pay for shipping.  If you don't buy your book now, someone else might, which I'll mention later.  There's always first-timers at the store and you'll often hear their surprise that just about everything in the store is a dollar (there are a few exceptions, but it's not worth noting).  Some people walk around with shopping carts and buy a lot of books...I'm sure they read them or give them as gifts or are big book collectors.  They fill that whole shopping cart!

You need patience because much of the store is unsorted.  Although they sort by categories, it's not alphabetized or anything.  My best finds have always been in the unsorted section where they just shelf books that just came in.  They receive more books than they could sell, so what do they do with all the books?  One time I asked a guy and he told me they send them to the Philippines.  A few times I asked where do they get their books in the first place, and they're either secretive or don't know.  I don't mind, but I was just curious...I do go there pretty often.  The staff is helpful, but the fun is searching for the books on your own.

Ohh, one time I was looking for a particular Stephen King book (Book II in The Dark Tower series) and I finally found it after months of searching!  This book was in the front of the store along with other King books...30 seconds later a man bought all of Stephen King's books that was on the shelf!  Timing was important because I could've lost out on that one!  Well, I could've bought it somewhere else instead of waiting for the store to have it and spend all this time looking for it, but I like the Dollar Bookstore because it's kind of like treasure hunting and it was really rewarding.

Right now, the bookstore is temporary closed and RIP Halloween Store is in its place.  Last year I thought the bookstore was gone forever...I thought they went out of business because all books are $1!  When Halloween was over last year, they came right back sometime in November.  I called recently and was informed that all their books are in storage and they'll open up again after Halloween.

So I'll be moving out of Burbank in October of this year...but I'll definitely visit Burbank for this store!  I take everybody who visits me to this store...we'd spend an hour or two browsing!  It's great!

I can easily spend at least an hour in there searching through all those books. I found a lot of books that would normally cost at least 10 dollars at any other book store.

Okay so obviously they aren't super organized. If you are paying a dollar per book...don't bitch about how you can't find what you are looking for. You don't go to a one dollar book store with something in mind...you just go and buy whatever catches your eye. I always see some poor soul searching and searching and then they will go and ask someone who works there where the book is. This results in the worker pointing to all the shelfs. The books are organized by sections...like childrens, romance, and so on.

I would avoid it during hot summer days because it's super hot in there. I'm guessing lack of aid conditioning. It always smells like weird closet.

Oh and they have best sellers up by the cashier!

I think this store has a new name: One Dollar Bookstore. At least that's what it now says on the storefront. It may also have new management because now ALL the books cost just a dollar. There were a few items that cost more than a buck (e.g., unopened DVDs were $5), but otherwise, paperbacks and hardbacks are just a dollar each. There are no returns or refunds. Cash only.

The store TRIES to be organized - there are sections labeled "Textbooks," "Parenting," "Computers," "Biography," "Foreign," etc. But even then, the store is pretty chaotic, especially the fiction section. The books are not exactly in alphabetical order - or any kind of order - for that matter. It's all sort of hit and miss. I've bought several books here, and it's almost like this "Eureka!" moment when you do come across something good. It's usually by accident, though. Some of the books are so old and out of date (especially the computer books and textbooks) that I don't even know why they bother. What made me laugh out loud were the children's coloring and educational books that were completely used. For example, there was a handwriting practice book for kids that some kid had completely filled out.

Another thing: I wouldn't recommend coming here on the hottest summer days because the A/C is terrible. I almost passed out in there today.

The boy and I came here after a futile visit to the Burbank Town Center.

It's quite messy and reminds me of visits to "Friends of the Library" booksales.  I exercised self-control and refused to buy anything.  Actually, it would probably take me quite a while to find something worth buying, even at the cost of a dollar, since it looks like much of the merchandise is cast-off from the Friends of the Library.  I found one of those books which has ridiculously cute pictures of dogs and paged through that for a few minutes.

I miss Half Price Books in Texas.  I think the only one here in California is up north.

You have to dig around to find a few gems, but there's always something I can find here for a dollar.  Usually in the cookbook sections.

If you're a teacher, you can walk out with a cart of books for a buck each.  Can't beat that.

I don't spend much time in Burbank, but when I go there, this is a place I always stop by.

    AH-MA-ZING.

This is where I can spend a whole afternoon seeking out classic  books I want to re-read (i.e Sweet Valley High hahahaha) or check out any book that even looks SLIGHTLY interesting since it's only a buck!  I found some great books I've actually wanted to read (Friend Green Tomatoes) and know I'll be back for more.  This is great for getting children's books too - they have some wonderful classic stories I love.

A plus is the dusty, "old book" scent feel.  I feel like I've been thrown back and I love it love it love it!  Some of the books have writing in it, which I think brings out a lot of character in the book.  It's like traveling in time and sharing a moment with people of the past...or even present :)

I used to live down the street from here a couple years ago ... but at that time I believe it was a Crown Book store before it had converted to a Used Book Store. A $1 Book Store for that matter!

I have been here a few times and have found some great travel books. I like to escape & day dream as I peruse the pages.

When I returned here last night, I was looking for a specific book. I had searched the aisles ... and after the second or so round, I think the book found me. It was right there and if I didn't look carefully, I would've missed it. If it's a rare copy, it's like treasure hunting!!

The books are categorized by types. But not alphabetized. And NERD ALERT!!!! I saw ANIME stuff. Ding, ding, ding! What kind they have? What do I know?!? I saw some Dan Brown books. Even an N*Sync sticker book - I was so tempted to relive the 90s J.T. years.

If you're an avid reader, this would be your great escape. I give it a 3-star rating - only because I'm a casual reader. I only go here for travel stuff.

I can get lost in a bookstore.  I love books and this place is a great find. Of course, most of the stuff is old and tattered but if you're willing to do some down-and-dirty book treasure hunting, this shindig just might fulfill that need. I found some fiction hardcovers by Peter Mayle and some Tom Stoppard plays one visit and I left there a happy camper.

But when the books are this cheap, you really can't complain. You just gotta dig.

This is a really neat used bookstore in downtown burbank.  Most books are priced at a dollar.  There's no database and don't expect the dewey decimal system here because their only form of organization is classification by genre. Books laid haphazardly throughout their respective (sometimes half bare) sections.its alot like digging through a thrift store. This store smells of character, old dusty browning pages kind of character.

My favorite find was their section of Little Golden books that induced childhood flashbacks of Mr. Flores' storytime, faux carpet, kids that sat way to close in a misshaped half circle and tennis shoe burns on the back of my hands.  Makes you wish you knew some kids just so you'd have an excuse go through with this frivolous impulse buy.

I could have easily spent an hour or two just browsing.  The store itself isn't very aesthetically pleasing, and it doesn't seem to be a priority. Like the books in this store, the shop draws a fairly eclectic range of customers.

Really surprised at the high ratings of this place ever since it was taken over by a new owner. The previous owner had a better layout and one would find gems that made it feel like a treasure hunt. I would walked out with 10 to 20 books before, yet now I am lucky even to find a book I am even interested in.

I like the store but did I really just get an attitude from a 16(maybe younger.. who knows) year-old girl that was working the register?

She short-changed me and when I told her this she said "..um.. I guess.. " and I said "You guess?" and she just made faces at me like a little runt that she is.
I walked outside and I saw her staring at me, pointing at me and making comments to her even younger friend as they were making faces at me and flicking me off.

Co-workers and I had gone to a nearby restaurant for dinner after work, and then decided to walk around to "digest" and check out local shops in the area.

We stumbled upon this gem of a store; each item is literally $1.00 apiece, and there is a vast array of items from which to choose.

*Note: the books are each a few years old or more, so don't expect to find anything "hot off the presses" here.

If I remember correctly, the selection of books varied from "Fast Food Nation" and other food-related books (some novels, others actual cookbooks), to business/law related reference books (and even random textbooks, for those who care), and other assorted interest books (computer-related, foreign-languages, etc.).

I picked up a couple of business administration/management books, while my co-workers picked up a few entertainment-industry related books (production-related, etc.) and other miscellaneous books.

We each ended up with exactly 9 books. At checkout, the sign read "$10.00 minimum on charge card purchases"...bummer, but not for long!

We each grab an additional book (easy--I decided on a John Grisham novel over a Mary Higgins Clark for the final book) and made an even $10.00 (not including tax). With tax, the total came out to $10.93 for each of us.

Not bad for a night...dinner, capped off by some book-shopping. Nerdy, I know, but as they say, "knowledge is power" =D

How exciting is this place?!!?!?!  I walked by and I saw the sign for $1 Books,Music, Movies!!!  My bf patiently walked with me as I searched each shelf!!  They have all sorts of books and a huge kids section!  They even have some VHS tapes  (you know those huge black cassettes with tape in them that play movies lol)  for $1 which is cool because I am one of those cool people who still have a VHS machine...  Some of the books are pretty worn out but hello $1!!  Def a place to spend some time in

The name rings true, the prices here are very cheap.  Unfortunately the selection is terrible.  It's like they went to all the other books stores in town and asked for everything that hasn't sold in seven years.  I love bookstores, but this one is as bad as they come.  Unless you are totally desperate for a generic gift, I don't recommend shopping here.

This place always smells kind of weird and the merchandise doesn't change TOO often, but there are total scores to be found here! I got a hardback book I've been after (which normally costs $16) for $6. I figure if I go here every few months it's enough to catch the good deals on books I actually care about.

the only thing i like about burbank is the stretch of warehouses on san fernando before you hit that "main drag" and the dollar bookstore near the end of that street.

whats up with the no-smoking laws downtown? that's just weird.

but the bookstore is awesome.  i love the trashy cheapness of the interior, the eclectic clientele meandering through the aisles, and being able to sate my embarrassing fondness for "chick lit" paperbacks (don't hate- i bought some joyce as well) for just a few bucks.

I've always been a fan of cheap, used books. This place is the epitome of a dream for me. heh. I know i'm a nerd. But in all honesty, you can find a book for any trip you're taking. If you like sci fi, fiction, biographies this is it for you. they also have a decent selection of self help, nutrition, textbooks, encyclopedias, childrens, and cookbooks.

I love this bookstore it's my favorite place to buy books and gifts.  It has tons of books at really cheap prices.  I just spent $30.00 this weekend at this location on 5 books.  One book was $50 discounted for $15.  They all but give away the books here.  I think if you spend so much here they like to throw in some free, as there are usually signs posted about buy two get one free or something.  FYI...the $15 book I found is really rare most books run about $2-5.  They have all kinds of books too, religious, self-help, children's books, books on tape, fiction, etc, etc, etc.  So go check it out on your way to or from the AMC Burbank 16 it's right on the corner.

Although the books are unorganized, they're cheap! Its hard to find what you want right away but if you spend an hour or so...something will definitely catch your eye!

You can't beat the price, everything for a $1.  Here patience is required since is not well organized.  They do try to keep the books in sections with handwritten signs.  I must say, I did walk off with four books I know I will enjoy reading, and all for the grand price of $4.36.

I visited this shop yesterday (May 2009) and I was surprised at how well categorized certain sections are.  The parenting/baby section is a GREAT resource.  You can save a bundle on all the standby reads (e.g. What to Expect When You're Expecting or Healthy Sleep Habits) by grabbing them for just a dollar.
