19 reviews for Omonia Cafe
it really is funny writing this review, as i have been here years and years ago before yelp existed, possibly before internet hit the streets too.
omonia is great they have the real authentic iced coffee, the way it should be. the name is FRAPPE and if you havent tried one, get out of your dunkin donuts routine and get the real deal. thats how real coffee drinkers do it in the summer. as greeks, we should know, thats all we do during the months of june-sept. frappe, tsigaro and repetition.
the cakes and sweets are all top notch too, they are the ones who actually distribute to many of the restaurants in the area who serve pasteries, so next time dont give out credit so easily.
When I'm back in Brooklyn, Omonia allows me to keep the tradition of getting charming boxes of excellent, fresh baked cookies, cannoli, strawberry tarts, and the like. Their coffee is excellent also, and thier back patio (with its modern waterfall) makes for an excellent place for a casual, latenight snuggle with dates, friends, and family.
Their service isn't always the most attentive, and sometimes the regulars can behave as though they have an entitlement, and those points keep me from giving this place four Yelpy stars. But still, it's elegance and delicious treats easily supercede those shortcomings.
I LOVE THIS PLACE. It has a very chill atmosphere. Their drinks are eh, but the place is meant to hang out with your friends and relax. I've tried their food, again nothing amazing... I'm a huge fan of tiramisu.. theirs is ok. Ask their waiter for recommendations.. Drinks during the summer Bailey's Iced Frap = yum
Summer= Sit outside.. FYI.. people do smoke, but it's nice to dine outside
Winter= Second Floor, more warmer
I would recommend their banana boat.. it is big enough to share
I come here every now and then during the fall, winter and spring.. the summer I come every other week
I rarely get good service here.
Sometimes I feel like my presence is burdensome to the waitstaff.
But the food is good, and the outside seating area is really nice. The Cypriot sandwich is great, and I'm a huge fan of their Bailey's Frappe. The rest of their desserts and dishes are of reliable standard quality.
It's Good. Not great.
Sit away from some of the obnoxious regulars and expect to wait a while, Otherwise, you'll be just fine.
Not as good as the Astoria branch where we always ate before this. Ordered our favorite square spannakopita and the cheese-stuffed pastry (not a dessert). Both came warmed in a microwave that makes the pastry and phyllo dough soggy instead of flaky. Ate half there, decided to take the remainder home to reheat at 350 in the oven for 15 minutes. What a difference when the dough is crisp and flaky. Now they were great. Strictly takeout if we ever get here again.
Where to start? There is nothing European or charming about this place. The tables are crammed together with very little room to walk or move. I could barely hear myself think, let alone talk to my date (which really wasn't such a loss), and the clientele--a mix between high school kids and Guido men in leather jackets wearing gold chains--no thanks! And to top it all off the smell of smoke from the chain smokers outside wafts in from the outdoors along with the cold air on a 50 degree night!
Oh oh oh, dare I forget the dated, gaudy decor. I could vomit my Napoleon just thinking about it. You can get pastry just as good and better at many other establishments in Bay Ridge.
Ditto on the inconsistency of the desserts here. It's a crapshoot on whether your dessert is a hit or miss - sometimes, EVEN ON THE SAME PIECE.
I was eating the Oreo Mousse cake last night and the first few bites were yummy and moist. Then it quickly devolved into dry spongey-ness towards the border of the slice. I don't get it. Who fucked up?
Otherwise, their food is pretty good; I had their spinach pie. The atmosphere is very cute and the backspace allows for (chain)smoking. Very affordable prices.
A great space, open late, with lots of fantastic confections you'll find difficult to chose between - but the service and length-of-time between ordering a main course and being served lets it down. Good spot to head to on a weekend with a date if you're looking for that late-night, almost-cosy, but not too-cosy place to wind it down (stay in the front). Beware the weekends though, clientele can get bawdy, and service even slower, but hey, maybe that's a good excuse for another cappuccino and conversation, Né? Do have the Café Omonia in the winter, it's the new Irish Coffee.
Greek for Friendship
When you walk in, you are overwhlemed with the large overflowings counters of pastry and other delights. All of the pastries are of high quality (my favs Cannolis and Chocolate covered almonds)
Coffee selection is impressive with array of delicous Greek concotions.
Place is open really late (2-4am) worth a look and a late night must
for some reason take on pastries seems rather pricey lately
The first time I went, I loved it. Sadly, I never recreated the experience. Lately, I've found the service slow and apathetic. The pastries look better in the case (and they do look amazing!) than they taste. The exception here is the coffee. Espresso/capuccino/ice coffee - all good.
Another downside (for non-smokers) is that the adorable outdoor seating area is always full of people puffing away. Such a shame. On the other hand, if you like smoke, it's a great place to spend a long, lazy afternoon over a plate of sweets and a great coffee.
This place is decent. My friends and I usually go there for the waffle fries. I had the tiramisu there once and it wasn't bad...I had better. So I say just go here for the waffle fries really.
The pastries were decent, but I'd grab them for take home, as the time I stayed I didn't love the ambiance. It's a high-school hang out on the weekend nights, you if you enjoy large groups of obnoxious youngsters loitering inside and outside the restaurant you've hit the mark!
I LOVED THIS PLACE! I went there once in 2000 when I came to NYC on vacation. My friend in Brooklyn took me there. I just love European cafes in general, and Omonia was it. Beautiful decor, amazing patio, truly great. Not sure if it's still just as good now in 2008, but I'd definitely go back if I'm ever in the Big Apple again.
I used to spend more time here when I was younger. I reduced this place a star because of the crowd this place draws leaves something to be desired. The place does have a very nice design layout but because of the aforementioned crowd I tend to get my pastries to go. Now onto the good stuff. All the pastries here are delicous, but my favorite is the cannoli cake.
Omonia gets 4 stars based on the entire experience, not soley on the quality of the pastry. While every menu item I have tried has been tasty, I would have to agree with the other reviewers that there are probably better bakeries in the area. For me the outdoor space really makes the experience special. It's a great place to sit with an espresso and enjoy a long conversation on a nice evening or read a newspaper in the morning as the service will generally not rush you out of there. While people do smoke in the outdoor space, it just adds to the Europeaness of the whole place.
Awww...I LOVE Omonia.... Really great bakery with tasty pastries, cakes, tarts...hey who are you calling a tart! oops...sorry got distracted there. Anyway, if you get tired of bouncing around the bars on 3rd Avenue then stop in and recharge with coffee and a pastry. Really nice outdoor spot when the weather is warm.
I have to agree with K.W. about the desserts looking better than they taste. I hardly ever get dessert, so when I do, I'm excited about it. When I bit into the little chocolate covered sponge cake square, that tasted like chocolate WATER, I whined and pouted all the way home. Next time, I'm not going to mess around, I'm going to Jean Danet on 5th.
I want to like it more than I do. I dont know why I dont like it. I have no specific complaint. There is free wi-fi which should make me ecstatic. The stuff I've had has been decent or better. Hmm. Maybe I should try again, then come back and edit this review, which is ever not so helpful.
great place to hangout in the middle of the night, get a drink, have some sweets, and even sit in the outdoor seating in the back and smoke =x shhh
