The food is great....well the deserts at least. There are so many deserts to choose from, it's almost overwhelming. I've had about 20 different pastries, and all have been superb.
the only problem that I have, is that you cannot really eat there. The service sucks. So much that I refuse to dine in. I've spent an hour and a half there with one piece of baklava and coffee... but that's because the servers disappear. It is worse when they are busy.
The pastry are a 5 star. The service is a 1 star. Take my advice, pick it up and take it home.
The marble cheesecake is by far the best I've had in New York. It is well worth the $5.50. Omonia uses top-notch ingredients and everything is very decadent, which I like.
You can find better value if you go to a neighborhood bakery in Astoria.
I think I'm going to review every piece of dessert I get here. I have quite a sweet tooth.
The cream puff -- love the sticky crispy syrup candy with the almond slices that's on top of the cream puff. The cream puff itself was okay.
The Grand Marnier mousse cake -- mmm. . . I'll eat another slice any day. Lovely creamy mousse with a chocolaty grand marnier flavor, but the alcohol flavor was subtle, not overpowering. Good layers of chocolate cake in between the mousse layers. Not cloyingly sweet.

Depending upon what you order, this place runs between 2 and 3 stars. I prefer Athens Cafe on 30th,… Read more »
The brunch specials are great! About $12 per person. I highly recommend the Homemade Spinach Pie, cannoli, coffee, and a mommosa.
The Spinach pie is the absolute best I have ever had. Flaky pastry, feta cheese, fennel, simply outstanding. The cannoli was absolutely incredible. I had never truly eaten a true cannoli until I had that object of perfection.
Go now and treat yourself.
Omonia is a pretty decent place that has become on more than one occasion a go to for my late night after dinner desserts.
Their selection of various sweets and baked goods far exceeds those of any typical restaurant and combined with their late hours results in numerous people filling this place up.
The staff are all very friendly and while lively, the place is quiet enough for you have your conversations without needing to shout.
While I'm sure a lot of their traffic has come from the fact that they made the cake for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, they can certainly draw enough people with their selection of sweets and Greek coffee.
Great spot for those Business meeting mid day.. over a wide selections of authentic real ethnic Deserts. Its open late, too! Very friendly staff, and lots of eye candy :) If you're in the area, check it out. It's one of my favorites.
I've been here numerous times, and every time I have a great time. They have an extensive menu, where everything is pretty good and prices aren't crazy. Their traditional Greek items are INCREDIBLE. The spinach pie is so good that words can not even describe (I literally spent 5 minutes just now trying to describe how good it is, but none of the words I came up with did it justice!). The only small con is that the music they play is a little weird. It's always this crazy euro techno that makes me want to do the rave or something. But whatever, music aside... this place rocks
Did you ever go to a cafe and felt like you belonged there? This is what Omonia is like. The attitude is relaxed and casual. The waitstaff are young and no one pressures you to leave. I love the Cappuccino Fudge (you guessed it -- cappuccino with fudge at the bottom of the cup and topped with cinnamon) and the baklava is beyond amazing (bring a friend with you because if you try to eat the whole serving yourself (and you will), you will be feeling the sugar-induced pain later).
The cafe has a full menu and a full bar. I have never eaten a meal here, just dessert. We usually eat at Michael's. If you like the cafe scene, this place is for you. The Astoria location is much better than the Bay Ridge one.
I enjoy that Omonia offers a brunch special on weekends. My particular choice for the entree (Strapatsada) was less than great. It was advertised to contain feta cheese, but I wish there was more as the eggs were underseasoned and a salty cheese would have been perfection had they added more. The sweets were very tasty though, and perhaps Omonia Cafe's saving grace. I'd definitely get dessert here again, but wouldn't try their Strapatsada next time.
All I've eaten here is a couple scoops of ice cream with chocolate sauce, but even that was slightly above average. It tasted more like pistachio, coffee, and cocoa, than sugar, which is unusual.
The main seller here is the vibe. This is obviously a nice, neighborhood place, for real people, mostly Greek, including older adults, teenagers, and also, but not just, yuppie glitterati. Our waitress was Greek, capable, and entirely pleasant.
There is glassed in/outdoor seating, which is the nicest. The main space indoors is nicely proportioned. Even the Greek, circa the 1980s decor, featuring wall-to-wall carpeting, wrought iron and gold, and neon accent lighting, somehow feels less garish than homey.
Food 6 + ambiance 7 + value 7 + service 7 = overall 6.5 / 10 (good/decent)
I came for dessert. Good service, friendly staff. I had a nutella, caramel and apple crepe....it was gooood. They had a BIG menu, which to me signals 'quantity not quality'. None of the other desserts really appealed to me. I also had pistachio ice cream, and that tasted fake, if ice cream can taste fake. I also tried the cannoli, which was decent. I want to come back for brunch so I can complete my judgement of this place.
ok this place should have a restraining order against me by now! living with in 20-25 steps away from this place is a cake lovers DREAM, or should i say NIGHTMARE!!!! grrrrr , this is a cute date place, atmosphere is very fun, young, yummy! dessert are everywhere!!! they do have a food menu, brunch, lunch etc. however, I would just go for good Frappe and a slice of cake or two or maybeeeee three :) i would not turn down any date if they took me to omonia........dangerous!
I have been going here since the late 80's. Great pastries and really nice sidewalk cafe atmosphere. I love the chocolate mouse mice. They even have a piano player occasionally. plus they are open really late and I am a night wolf.
I walk by this place at least twice a day. After a year, I finally sat and ate inside the restaurant (previously I had picked up pastries and such for special occasions). Greek frappes are average for the neighborhood. Food is not great at all, in fact, it seems no one really orders food here. The desserts are sticky and taste as if they are loaded with fake sugar, fondant, etc.
Ended up here by chance when looking for a brunch place with my Dad. What a great find! I had been by this place several times before, but it always looked so posh I just assumed it was out of my price range. This was a clear lesson in not judging a book by its cover! You really can't beat $12.95 for brunch that includes a drink (coffee, tea, juice, soda, etc), a drink-drink (mimosa, bloody mary, or a screwdriver), an entree (nice selection), and a dessert (again, wide variety).
I think it's pretty awesome that you can get a screwdriver with a full meal when in most bars you'd pay $8 just for the drink alone. :-)
And, I have to say...this place had the absolute BEST baklava I've ever had in my entire life...it was heavenly, seriously.
...and my waitress was pretty hot (which in no way influenced this review...I swear...hehe).
But yeah...great brunch place...I highly recommend it.
'Omonia' literally means accord, or concordance. In the sense used here it a place where people can get together and discuss things in a harmonious setting.
This place used to be really good, now its okay, still worth a visit.
Back when the gym across the street was a catering hall and I was still a high school student I would come to 'Omonia' after pulling long hours serving your typical party fare at the 'Crystal Palace Catering Hall'. It was a great place to unwind with a friend, drink a coffee, have a sweet, and ramble on various topics. Late at night it can still be just that.
I'm not a fan of service, it betrays an arrogance and snobbery not usual at Greek cafes. A lot of the staff is right of a European pop video, complete with totally 'manscaped' waiters, with overly styled hair, 5 o'clock shadows, and Marlboro breath. The waitresses move with the urgency of sleep.
A lot of the staff doesn't speak Greek and so you might have to point out what you want on the menu.
I recommend Omonia for dessert and coffee (try a Greek coffee, which I prefer metrio which means medium) or an iced frappe (usually taken with milk and sugar.
When it comes to the pastries the classics would be:
galaktoboureko - I've had here numerous times, and always enjoy.( a rich, thick custard, baked between phyllo and drizzled with honey
baklava - usually good, and it sells quickly so it tends to be fresh. (everyone knows this)
kadaifi (also known as kadaif and to the Anglo connoisseur 'Bird's Nest')
bougatsa (not sure if they carry this, but if they do, its worth every chew)
Aside from the typical Greek stuff, they have an assortment of cakes. I've tried the chocolate mousse and deem it acceptable.
If you are in a snacky mood, they also have a decent selection of plates. I recommend the Cypriot Sandwich...basically a panini with smoked lounza (Cypriot style smoked ham), tomatoes and haloumi cheese.
But I would not recommend this place for dinner or for large families.
For a late night coffee, or drink - this place does the trick though.
I really wanted to love this place-I've walked by it a million times and have watched people brunching and drinking coffee on a lazy Sunday afternoons, but something was just off. Maybe it was the fact that a fellow foxy yelper and I were being suffocated by the never-ending steam of smoke from our chain-smoking, butt-crankin co-eaters or the slower than molasses uphill in january waitress.
The idea of dining al fresco is great if there is fresh air to be found. When it takes a wrong turn, it's like being in an Atlantic City casino without the free drinks or sequins.
The food was good and inexpensive-2 dinners for under $25. Granted, one dinner was actually an omlette and another was a turkey sandwich with a side salad. Oh, and there was also a coffee present. Still cheap for the neighborhood. I would go back, but next time with a fire extinguisher. I'm subtle like that.
Ah man, one HELL of a place for dessert/coffee! I normally just grab a pastry to go, but did sit in once before.
I won't lie, I seem to always go for the same strawberry cheesecake slice when I get something to go. However, there are SO many choices, all of which look delectable, but since I normally stop by here due to a cheesecake craving, that's what I end up with! It's about $4.50 for a slice, which judging by other places is about right.
The one time I sat in I ordered an Iced Cappucino and a Crepe with ice cream and nutella. The coffee was a bit too sweet, but the crepe was AMAZING (although naturally UBER sweet). It was easily the biggest crepe I have ever had (I couldn't finish it...).
The atmosphere is very upbeat, with cool color changing mood lights!
Also, and completely random, check out the sink in the bathroom! It's hella cool. It appears almost FLAT but yet the water doesn't spill off the side!
Nice place. Good vibe. Waitress was kinda ditzy though. I ordered the Napoleon and it was too creamy. My date ordered the mud pie and he said it was too sugary. The music was just a tad too loud but I think it's to drown out the sounds of the cars roaring by. Three stars for the vibe!
It's a cafe, so guess what? Some people are going to smoke in this place. The food and especially the coffee are a bit pricey, but again guess what? The espresso I ordered was excellent and so was the tuna wrap and salad it came with. Good luck finding other places that serve up perfect espressos like this, you'll most likely pay a dollar or so less, but get much worse quality, why bother drinking it then.
The spinach pie and frappe coffee the person with me ordered were both excellent, and the spinach pie was HUGE and from what they said both were perfect, not the best spinach pie they ever had, but definitely worth it.
The pastries are up there also, not the best, but definitely a wide thorough selection, I love staring at the dessert counters in the front and taking my time ordering sweets to go.
Does this place ever close? I live right by it and I don't think I've ever seen it closed. Plus the lights are always on in their full glory....the people living across the way must be wary of the light show they have going on every night.
I'm a big fan of Omonia's food though. Between my friends and I we have tried most everything on the menu and have partaken in their awesome brunch deal on many occasions. During brunch they give you SO MUCH FOOD that you feel that you might explode with food happiness. My advice: give in and enjoy.
I have been a fan of Omonia since the 80's. I even remember when they used to have a temple dedicated to Aphrodite. I know the owner by face and he knows me by face. He is always very friendly and made me and my parties very welcome to the place.
I love the Greek coffee and it always goes well with an Ekmek or Kadaifi. The place has a very European feel to it. We have sat there for hours discussing politics, films, art, books, life, or just silently taking the scene in. They never rushed us, even if they were busy.
I have never tried the food, as we always eat at Uncle George across the street.
Yasu.
I've had it with this place. For the second time in a few months I was greeted by some form of insect while trying to enjoy some delicious dessert.
The first time I had a coffee inside when a huge cockroach came creeping down the wall next to my table. We immediately moved away and swore to only return for take out desserts on the other side of the restaurant.
Tonight when I got home ready to savor a piece of their delicious cake, I open the take out (which I witnessed the server prepare) only to find one, then another, and another little crawly bug! The cake looked practically alive there was so much movement! I was so disgusted I could not wrap it up and pitch it fast enough.
Don't go here. You never know what surprise you'll find in your dish!
Every time I walk by Omonia, I see how happy the people look eating their brunch or sipping their fancy cocktails al fresco. And I used to think to myself, "I want to be one of those people."
But a few weeks ago on a very hot night, I became one of those people. I had a friend visiting and we decided to go late at night after an evening of beer drinking and perspiring at Bohemian Hall.
But the Omonia menu is absurdly/painfully expensive, even after you've had a pitcher of Staropramen. My friend got some $9 beer and a burger. I got lame cheese fries. It's the kind of menu you look at and immediately want to leave the restaurant, because you know the prices don't mean that the food or drinks are that good. Also, it's Queens! Is the real estate on that corner really so expensive that they have to charge that much? Ugh.
So now, every time I walk by Omonia, instead of wanting to be those people I now think to myself, those people are spending way too much just to sit on that corner and look fancy. Not worth it.
Despite how tasty the desserts look and, in some cases, as tasty as they actually are, it's all irrelevant if you happen to walk past the kitchen on 33rd St. I have never seen a more disgusting site in all my life. The fact that they leave the door wide open for all to see is truly mystifying. Yes, the door is open and there's no screen so the pigeons can pluck up some goodies just inside the door (I've seen it happen).
There are cakes in pans cooling...on the floor. Sometimes they're near the door and I have to wonder if the pigeons have ever gotten to those. The rest of the kitchen looks like there has just been a colossal food fight. There's gooey, disgusting "stuff" everywhere. There's wet pieces of cardboard on the floor that look like they've been walked over by muddy boots every day for 3 years. It's such an utter disaster that I had pangs of real fear after seeing it, having eaten there previously. When I walk by and see people eating the food, I'm literally mortified. I want to grab them and bring them around back to see the kitchen - a sight that could only lead to immediate projectile vomiting.
How they pass their health inspections, I'll never know. I've never seen anything like it.
Hark! Over there! What's that shining beacon of light and sound on Broadway? Ooo... look at all those cakes. And, what's that in the main dining room? Is it some sort of rave party? Oh wait, it's Omonia Cafe. The hippest, trendiest diner/bar/club/lounge/brunch destination in Astoria! What an awesome idea! It's like a cafe, but CRAZY! Or, just confusing and awkward...
The desserts and bakery here are gorgeous. The restaurant, meh. I'd suggest going for brunch or something during the day as by night the location turns into something else entirely what with with the music videos in foreign languages, brightly colored lights, and all.
Omonia is well decorated and pleasing on the eyes, but the food leaves a bit to be desired. It's basically the typical Greek inspired diner food - burgers and sandwiches mixed with greek salads and the customary falafel and shwarma offering. Nothing is overly delicious, but it gets the job done and you get to eat in a stylish setting.
This place is pretty good. The bakery next door is great, and they even made the cake for My Big Fat Greek Wedding!
My boyfriend hates the wine here, but the food I've always had has been either decent or downright tasty! The service is crap, but they definitely make up for it with the fun atmosphere. Disco lights, blaring techno music, it's a club with Greek food!
ps- most of the menu is made up of desserts. Don't expect an above average meal, but you won't want to leave the desserts!!
Stars: Three and a half, rounded up 'cos I'm in a good mood.
This was the first foot stop in my New York/DC (Tribeca Film Fest/Time with Mom) vacation. It's just down the block from where I was staying, in the charming Astoria (Queens) apartment of my film school bestie Nina. Sadly, ensuing weather meant this would be my one and only alfresco dining experience of the trip.
The place is cute and relaxing with both indoor seating and an outer sidewalk cafe. At night, the red brick is illuminated by intense lights that change color. The attached bakery has an enormous dessert counter- you can either pick up desserts there or order them from your table.
I was famished, having traversed the country on just an egg burrito and jet blue's little snackies. I ordered fried calamari and the Market Salad that boasted a variety of yummy veggies with goat cheese dressed with a fig vinaigrette. The calamari (about $9) was on the good side of standard and the salad ($12) was quite tasty. I ate them together.
There were plenty of options for my veggie friend (spinach pie) and macrobiotic friend (tuna salad with olive oil and lemon on the side)
I had a glass of chardonnay ($6). They also give you tap water in a bottle on the table which is nice, no waits for refills.
The dessert menu is three pages long and includes many greek pastries with about 14 syllables and as well as scores of american and italian-american standards. I went with a menage a trois of mini fruit tarts. Hubba, hubba, they were rich and delicious! The filling was a little more cheesecake-y than custardy but it worked. Maybe the best dessert i had in NYC this trip and I averaged 2 per day.
This isn't a place you'd venture from a different part of town to try, this a place you should give a chance if you live nearby, especially for the pastries.
I started out really liking this place. I thought that the pastries were beautiful, but after ordering what I thought were different slices of cake, they all turn out to be the same thing. I don't know, maybe it's just me, I end up with some spongey sometimes soaked or completely dry cake with creme throughout each layer (sometimes with strawberry jam, sometimes not) then covered in frosting or chocolate.
Oh well, it's a good desert after a tiring day.
Affordable
Very good brunch. It's $13 and you get your choice of coffee, juice, or tea, A main dish whether that be ham and cheese or a bacon egg wrap, a dessert and your choice of a screwdriver, mimosa or bloody mary. Each of these dishes are about $8 a pop so it's worth it. The place doesn't get crowded so you don't have to worry about getting a seat. I never though I'd like Greek music but if you hang here enough it'll grow on you. The wait staff is friendly but they don't check up on you enough and sometimes forget you. The quality of the food is great as well. I'm a fan of the Mediterranean pizza. Oh, their regular coffee is surprisingly good! Very smooth. There too much to write about with their pastries and desserts so I'll just say this: If you've ever seen "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" they made the wedding cake in the movie.
Astoria seems to have this thing with diners trying to be cool. Omonia may have some fancy looking desserts, but deep down it falls into the trap of trying to be cool without good service or excellent food.
The music was horribly loud for conversation and distracting. The menu was boring and expected. I'm eternally annoyed at places that like to charge more than $2 for a cheap Lipton bag of tea. My personal pique, the other drinks were much more fairly priced.
The service was practically non existent, and if we hadn't asked for our check more than once I'm fairly sure we would have never gotten it. I wouldn't bother going back, and I'm still searching for a good diner to eat at in Astoria.
I have lived in Astoria over 1 year now and ALWAYS wanted to try this place. I love the open seating on the corner. It looked fabulous for getting coffee and dessert.
So drug hubby on the last weekend of the summer. I got an amazing Greek Iced Coffee- very very good and just an almond cookie. (I love me some marzipan and almond flavor!!) It was moist and a nice sweet treat.
Hubby got a huge crepe with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some Belgium beer. (Yeah, the waitress was cute and efficient, but didn't mention to add the scoop of ice cream also added, like $3.00 to our bill) And his beer was NOT CHEAP, $7 or $9 or something.
BUT, we went for the experience. To sit and enjoy the sunshine and people watching and feel very European.
we've never gotten great service here, but it's also really crowded and happening, which i like. there's no other cafe you can go to and dance to trance music if you wanted to. we always go there specifically for the peanut butter sundae...which is the best $7.95 you can spend. we got adventurous once and tried the greek coffee...it was the worst 5.95 you can spend. i guess i can't speak for you, but for me at least. it tasted like you were scooping grounds into your mouth from the bottom of the coffee maker...if that's your thing, then cheers.
this place has an assortment of delightful desserts that are really really mouth-wateringly delicious. even when you're in the most crappiest mood and don't feel like eating desserts (ie. fighting with your bf), their napoleons will make you forget about all your problems and make you happy just for those few moments.
thank you omonia. you are now undoubtedly the place i will go to when i am sad, mad, depressed, or any negative emotion that one can feel.
mmm baklava! Love it. This is the real deal here. Established in 1977,
they are currently renovating, so seating may be limited, though there were tables set up outside along the side of the cafe.
I learned tonight, that OMONIA in Greek "denotes togetherness and friendship in an environment of harmony...so let harmony ring out for one and all at the omonia cafe." This is on their business card and I thought that was pretty cool name for a cafe - providing people don't confuse it with ammonia. Oops - different result ingesting ammonia versus baklava. My students ask me all the time when we study the elements that make up ammonia, if ammonia is when you get really sick (pneumonia). So cute.
Back to baklava. Hey, did you know that only the smooth topped phyllo dough ones are baklava?
First time, I lost.. was wrong street...
Second time, thanks god.. u r here!!!
Saturday afternoon... wasn't not that crowed..
I choose German Chocolate Cake w/ Cappuccino.. my bro got only Irish coffee... I hearted Irish coffee... he only could taste little bit... then finished Cappuccino... =) Cake was OK.. wasn't fresh.. but loved dark chocolate sweeten..
Like other reviews, it's perfect place to hang out w/ friend or family.. and watch people through the big junk windows..
As a Spanish girl, I'm in heaven each time I go and simply cannot get enough of this bakery. As some know, the cafe is undergoing mad renovations but I'm sure it will look amazing once finished. That is, is it finished?? Anyway, it's been some time since I visited and just now able to post about it.
Prior to the smoking ban, I loved sitting in the back, swapping stories with friends over cigarettes and delicious coffee. Now, we just swap stories over delicious coffee.
I love the entire staff, every single person (even though some have a hard time understanding english) is just so friendly and welcoming. I haven't really had any problems. Can get crowded LATE LATE at night and on weekends! The best time to go is at night when the lighting is dim.
As I mentioned, the coffee is amazing. And, you can refill, refill, refill without filling guilty. If you get a cappuccino or something like that, sorry, no refills. Their alcoholic drinks are just as good (and of course, extremely strong). The food is never a let down. Everything from their salads to quiche to pastries are divine...you will not be let down. Even if you aren't very hungry sharing a small pastry with a friend is definitely worth it.
All in all, this is a quaint and wonderful place. I enjoy it for brunch, dinner, late night coffee and chitchat. Ohoh, they are known to play music to which really brings the place to life!! This is a great place to chill with friends or out on a chill date.
It's not bad, but it'll do. Since "the closing" of Kolonaki, I was wrecking my brain on where to find another good place for chocolate covered bakalavas. Omonia is spacious, and cozy. They have windows that slide open during warmer temperatures so that you can be one with nature (err...the street).
The lattes aren't that bad here, but let's get to the sweets. The galaktoboureko has the consistency i love (not too runny or too stiff ~ custardy) and the choco covered bakalavas meet my standards (even syrupy goodness soaked into the phyllo). They have many assortments available, but i find that they were a little pricey in the end for the amount i bought.
Good brunch place with a comfortable decor. I like how its open to the outside during good weather. Whenever we take a walk down Broadway we usually stop in the bakery to pick up some cookies for the walk.
I had a great time here. The large picture windows and "step-up" seating really add to the atmosphere. They are a full-service bakery that also serves coffee drinks, pasteries, and cocktails! I will always have a fondness for this place after the entertaining show my husband and I got watching a 60+ year old man and his hired escort snuggle in the corner. Ping!
Oh yeah, the strawberry shortcake is perfect.
