Bodo's bagels and Irish steel cut oatmeal with fresh fruit kicked off the surprisingly well sourced breakfast buffet at the Omni hotel in Charlottesville. This surprised me because most hotel buffets are all the same...

Not at the Omni. The breakfasts were provided compliments of the manager when we arrived (just ask at the front desk), otherwise I probably would have never tried their sumptuous early morning spread. To begin you have the choice of coffee (Starbucks) and juice (not sure if it was fresh squeezed or not...probably not) and then the real choices begin. The real strength of the buffet has to be the sourcing for the products. The bagels come from Bodo's, a Charlottesville staple that serves some of the best you can find outside of Brooklyn. There are several types of cream cheese and some have herbs mixed in, a surprisingly thoughtful touch. Next there are croissants, whole gran toast, and danishes that looked pretty damn good. Around the corner the staff had spread out several loaves of freshly baked french bread with prosciutto, soprasetto, and other European style cold cuts and artisan cheese. It reminded me of the hearty breakfasts we were served at a small hotel in Vienna, Austria a few years ago. The next offering, a huge chaffing dish full of fresh country biscuits and thick sausage gravy did not entice me but then again I already had my eyes on the steel cut oatmeal bubbling on the other side of a towering display of organic yogurts. I love oatmeal, especially when it doesn't taste like glue. McCann's Irish Oatmeal is sort of expensive, but you can taste the quality. The Omni serves McCann's. There were at least a dozen different fruits, both dry and fresh for you to scoop on top, if that's your thing. There were also several types of cereal that did not include Pops, Fruit Loops, or Rice Crispies. The last stop offered made to order omelets, beautifully browned breakfast sausage, crispy bacon, red skin breakfast potatoes heaped with peppers and onions, and scrambled eggs. The one thing that was missing was probably grits, but I didn't miss them too much.

Four out of Five stars for well-sourced products, clean buffet area, friendly service, and a great reason to eat breakfast in the hotel! Give it a try the next time you stay at the Omni, or the line at Cafe Cubano is too long....you just might be surprised!

The Omni is one of the best hotels in the Charlottesville area.  The amenities are quite nice as they boast a decent restaurant/bar/lounge, a very nice pool and hot tub.  I was very impressed with their fitness center: one of the best I have ever used at a non- Las Vegas hotel.

Their rates are decent, and can be improved significantly with federal employee discounts.

I'm only going with three stars because the staff made everything ok.  Because everything was NOT ok when we arrived.

First, we were told there was a king room available.  Fortunately we asked to see the room before taking it for sure.  We walked into a room that smelled like dead people.   We were perplexed when we could not find a bed, and began to think we had been given a suite instead.  When we could not find another room, we looked more closely, only to find that the bed folds out of the wall!!!!

EWWWWWWW!!!!!!   No way was I going to stay there.

"Sorry, I guess we don't have any king beds."

Finally, they did realize that they had a suite with a king bed, so we took that, and it did actually smell better.

The restaurant is typical hotel fare, but friendlier than average service.

I won't go back, but it turned out not to be awful.

Fantastic stay.  Despite a rocky start (which the staff more than made up for), they were a dream to stay with.  Did I mention the staff?  They are SO AMAZINGLY NICE.  Seriously, I haven't felt so well-treated since I was in Japan (I think Omni may be Japanese-owned, which would make sense).  They seriously know how to do customer service there.

Also, I'm not sure if it was just because of my initial issue, but we got cookies and milk every night delivered to the room (complimentary), which is pretty classy, considering they took care of the issue!

The pool/whirlpool/sauna were nice, and the exercise room was awesome.

The location is completely ideal, it's right off the downtown mall, and the parking was included.

The rooms are really nice and very spacious.  Also, if you are a girl, you will no doubt love the billions of multi-sized and -shaped pillows on the beds.  HEARTS!  There's free wireless in the hotel, too (a necessity!)

Overall, just a really nice place -- I will for sure be looking for Omnis in other towns.
