2 reviews for Omni Austin @ Southpark
I think this hotel has gone through a remodeling since the last review a few years ago. There's still a lot of bronze throughout the property, and there is some wear and tear throughout the hotel, most noticeably in the elevators.
The room was an average size for an Omni business class hotel. The furnishings are also typical Omni--a lot of dark wood and leather, much more of a classical design. My room was pretty dark and the ceiling felt really low. Service also matched what you would expect from an Omni property...excellent.
I actually booked this hotel through Priceline and got a great rate, $45. I think, though, I might have been given a room for cheap ass Priceline customers like myself. The air conditioner didn't work all that well, and I could never get the room cooler than 72 degrees. The little end table in the room was noticeably lopsided and looked like it had come from some south Austin flea market. The hotel is right on 35 and traffic is noticeable, even on the higher floors, and I was on the end of the building closest to the highway. Stick it to the Priceline customer.
There is a nice pool and spa area, and room service was prompt, but expensive.
Generally, I was pleased with my stay and would probably book here again.
I dont want to seem like the person who has dogged places I have worked, because honestly I dont... But I feel the need to tell the truth about places and let the people know really what goes on behind closed doors....
Omni Austin @ Southpark, one of the older Omni hotels which was bought out from the Wyndem years ago has yet to go through a full rennovation since those times. Over time, some managers have gone in and made impactable changes, but unfortunately for the hotel they are no longer there. The conference halls are okay... make sure you review the property before you decide to book...
The restaurant, which is in DIRE need of a revamp from it's 70's brass and run down buffet, only offers staff that have been there for years and although some of them are great to work with, some of them act as though it is a denny's and are more concerned with getting you in and out than explaining the menu to you. The Pm crew changes constantly, if you are ordering off the menu, please ask for details.
The best thing I could say about the restaurant was that the pasta bar buffet for lunches was a really great discounted deal. I would highy recommend it, but with the addition of a new chef, that buffet might be gone now.
Sweetwater's - the old bar that used to sell the finest cigars is now more of a hole in the wall hang out and doesnt get as much attention as it needs... I pushed and pushed for a pool table while I was there, and I think they recently added it. The Lobby bar is very unique, sunk into the ground and allows patrons to have a quick cocktail when they arrive before heading to their rooms... The bartenders at both of these bars are superb. Very talkative and do their best to accomodate for your needs. I would recommend asking for Sandra or Chris while you are there. Anyone can visit the bars and restaurants in hotels, regardless if you are a guest or not, go check it out, but the prices are a bit steeper in hotels.
The rooms.... where to begin, the rooms ALL need to be revamped. I stayed in this hotel twice, and both times, I got slightly sick from the mold in the walls... Austin is notorious for mold, but they dont do anything to try and fix it or even hide it. If you were to pull down some wallpaper you might even visably see it.... I dont recommend doing this, they may charge you a repair charge. While checking in to your room, check everything... the showers, the faucets, the tvs, everything.... if anything seems out of place, not working, uncomfortable, ASK TO SWITCH ROOMS.... Although the engineering department does its best to accomodate for all repairs, they are so backed up with this old hotel that sometimes it takes a while. If the hotel has the room, they will just move you.
I would book through the hotel rather than on one of the discounted websites... the rates are usually the same, sometimes even cheaper just through the hotel. I would personally stay at the Omni Downtown and head to southpark just to check out the bars......
