Whether you are new to yoga or have been practicing for years, Om City is a wonderful place to take your yoga practice to the next level. Dee Greenberg has created a warm, welcoming, and non-competitive environment for aspiring yogis of all levels. Her many years of yoga experience combined with a degree in teaching allow her to lead classes that are never boring, never exactly the same, and challenging yet adaptable to students at any stage. The small studio has a relaxed, community feel and gives Dee the ability to get to know each of her students' strengths and weaknesses and help them grow. She demonstrates each pose with modifications and at more advanced stages so students can follow at their own pace. She is challenging, but not harsh, and she has a great sense of humor. She takes the time to get to know her students, to understand a little about their lives and where they are coming from. She uses music to facilitate the flow of the yoga class. On top of all this, Om City is very conveniently located on Mass Ave in North Cambridge. There's a parking lot behind the building (a rare commodity that you won't find at many area yoga studios), and it's also easily accessible via public transportation.
If you're a yogi, you know the benefits of a regular yoga practice--the strength to face challenges calmly, confidently, and gracefully; the ability to be present in the moment and the heightened state of awareness this brings; the physical and mental strength it builds; the compassion and openness it fosters.
I regularly (1 to 2x per week) attend Dee's yoga classes, and my chronic back pain has literally disappeared. I am able to relax in stressful situations, and I haven't been sick in many months. Dee and Om City Yoga have allowed me to take control of my life and realize that I can do anything I set my mind to. This may sound a bit dramatic, but it's true: yoga is very powerful, and I'd recommend it to anyone at any age or fitness level.
I'm glad I found a spot to practice yoga on Saturday afternoons- for five dollars!
The drop in class rate is pretty sweet, and I think mat rentals are free/$1.
Dee's studio is small, and she strives to learn her students' names and give them personalized attention. Definitely cool that she is so hands-on, but I did feel a little edgy being eyed so closely.
I'm not used to practicing yoga with music, so that threw me off a bit as well, as did the fact that we focused less on our breathing and locking of the core than I do at my usual yoga studio. I felt like the class tried to "dumb down" the fundamentals of yoga to make things less intimidating.
I could tell, though, that the returning students had a great relationship with their instructor...I just prefer the more urban, somewhat anonymous practice I get at my studio.
I highly recommend Om City to anyone who is new to yoga, and/or feels intimidated walking into a class where everyone is posing before it even starts! Absolutely impressed by Dee's focus on teaching - I haven't seen many yoga instructors walk around the room to ensure you're in the right position... The beginner's classes are great - I leave feeling relaxed, stronger and that I learned something!
Perfect for these stressful times!
Hi, I'm Nick. I'm a man, and I do Yoga.
To all you dudes out there who are skeptical, embarrassed, and scared of an activity you can't quite classify as a "sport," as something televised on ESPN...one you can't discuss in a state of male-bonding on the train with a random stranger...one you can't observe with an adult beverage... let me spell out some reasons why this ancient physical and mental discipline is one you should pay some attention to, and why you should start at Om City:
1) Yoga postures focus very much on "strengthening the core" - in others words, you'll get Killer Abs.
2) Face it, you hate Bally Total Fitness...that sweaty gym with those squeaky old machines and clunky weights...you are either tired of lifting or want something to ease the strain of other workouts. Yoga vastly improves flexibility, breathing, and agility. Think of it as a workout via stretching and utilizing your own body weight.
3) Great activity to do with your girlfriend or partner. Dee teaches a beginner's Vinyasa Flow class that I attend with my girlfriend on Sunday mornings that I find to be a great weekly outlet for both of us.
4) You know you get in too many bar fights. You gotta chill out man. An hour and a half with Dee including some meditation and you will be in a complete state of relaxation that will at least last through your next period of inebriation. Yoga relieves stress.
5) Believe it or not, some of the foremost teachers of Yoga today are guys - read Rodney Yee and Baron Baptiste - and check out Dharma Mittra (http://www.dharmayogac...). Dee studied under this gentleman, and you know you wish you had some of his moves...
Dee Greenberg (owner) operates an incredibly open and inviting studio in North Cambridge for all those interested. If you are man enough, stop by next Sunday for a first-timers fee of $10-15 to see what I'm talking about. In fact, regardless of your gender, this is an incredible place and I highly recommend beginning your experience with Yoga right here.
Om City Yoga is fairly new, maybe a year old. It doesn't look fancy from the outside, but that's what makes it a good place to go and have a really comfortable experience. It's run by one instructor, Dee Greenberg, who is trained in Kripalu, but she also teaches Vinyasa and frequently offers workshops, like Yoga for a Stong Back or Kripalu Yoga for Women in Midlife. Because the classes are small, you are likely to get some good personal attention. Granted the schedule changes frequently, but if you're on Dee's mailing list, she keeps you posted; and she often changes schedule times to make classes available to more students--she likes to get feedback. She even has $5 classes once a day and your first visit is $5. I've been really happy going here for the last 8 months. I recommend it.
NEW: Dee has 2 great new classes: Sun Salutations (26 minutes of Sun Salutations done to a musical mantra) and Explore the Core (intense core strengthening).
I love yoga at Om City! Dee focuses on doing things right, so after doing poses improperly for years I'm finally getting good feedback on how they're supposed to be done. I find her class for advanced beginners to be a push but even the beginner classes leave me feeling like I was challenged. The class hours are also great: it's hard to find classes that start late enough for me to make them after work, so her 7:45 class is really convenient. Plus it's in a great location right on Mass. Ave.
I met Dee through a class she teaches once a week at my work. I hadn't done yoga before I started taking that class, I am more a Pilates girl. I was curious to see if it's challenging me and found it to be an excellent addition to running and Pilates. As it turns out, Dee's studio is only 5 minutes from where I live so I started going to the studio as well. I really like the atmosphere she creates and the attention, especially when you're new. I also really like that Dee has a sense of humor. It's a focused workout but laughing is allowed.
Dee provides a lot of personal attention to each student. The different levels of classes she offers are good -- some are nice and mellow, others are an intense workout.
I really like this yoga studio. It's got an intimate feeling and you aren't crunched into a room with mobs of people like some of the places I've been; there is a very welcoming, relaxing feel to it- not at all competitive. Dee gives really good personalized feedback as well. I really enjoy the peacefulness of the classes- particularly the kripalu and gentle restorative classes. I'm not seeking a yoga sweat-fest or military-style yoga workout, just a time for some good breathing, stretching and internal harmonizing, and that is what I get here.
