I was worried about using Olympia after reading some of the Yelp reviews, but I couldn't afford the prices quoted to me by some of the highly reviewed moving companies in town. Two friends of mine had used Olympia and had good experiences, so I booked my move from the West Loop to Bucktown. I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out. The truck arrived early, the move took less time than expected, and the price was well under the original estimate. Sasha and his team took very good care of my things and were extremely professional and hard-working. I feel like my next move will be less stressful just knowing I can call Olympia.

Absolutely the worst, most ridiculous moving experience of my life. We were moving from Chicago to Texas and found this company through http://mymovingcentral.... At first it seemed like a great deal - they quoted us about $1600 for the entire deal, when other companies were quoting anywhere between $2000-5000.

They told us they didn't need to come see our belongings, which made me wonder, but we gave them a detailed list of our things and boxes (including the measurement of all of the boxes). Once we gave them that info, Sam (an employee there) said it was all fine, no problem, that even our big boxes would count as just "boxes" (I.e. flat rate). He told us specifically (more than once) that prices weren't based on the weight of our items, but on the general amount of room they would take up.

When the movers got to our place to load our things, they said, "Oh no, your boxes are bigger than the usual size, and now we are going to charge you $2600 for your move." What. The. Hell?!? We argued for almost an hour with the movers at our place AND with Sam, saying we provided specific measurements and he said the price remained as is. They said that now our boxes were too big and the weight would be x pounds. All of a sudden, after asking specifically many times and getting the opposite answer, they were in our home saying it was all based on weight, and wouldn't budge.

They basically had us and knew we had no other choice. Criminal.

We reluctantly let them take our things because we had to leave for Texas the next day. We  ended up sitting on camping chairs and eating with plastic silverware for two weeks. We called them over and over for two whole weeks to see when ourstuff would arrive, and they deliberately didn't tell us that not only was our stuff not coming soon, but it hadn't even left Chicago. Again - what the hell?!?

Our things arrived two weeks after they picked them up, and a few things were broken. These people are horrible. Absolutely, unbelievably horrible.
Never, EVER use this moving company.

Wow, I'm a little surprised at all the negative reviews on here...I have to say, I've never used them personally, however I have recommended them to several clients (I'm a real estate agent). The two that used them were both really impressed. I believe we compared them to Midway Movers and the cost was far less for these guys. They will also store your stuff for free for, I believe, up to 30 days. So I'm not sure what the issue was with the reviewer who said she was charged for storage. I have noticed that most of the negative reviews seem to be from people moving cross-country, so perhaps they operate differently. My clients have all been moving cross-town.

My only beef is that if they don't hear from you, they will call you multiple times a day. I called on behalf of one client, so they had my number, and I must have heard from them twice a day for a few days. I appreciate you trying to earn my business, but chill out.

Olympic Moving & Storage is a scam, and the company is full of liars and crooks.

Knowing how Olympic operates, I am sure the positive reviews on this page are fake.  They all showed up the same week of April from accounts with few other reviews. This blatant astro-turfing compelled me to update this once more.

Here's my review. It's from a REAL, ANGRY customer:

    [12/1/08]

My belongings were just picked up yesterday but I am so unhappy that I feel compelled to begin this review immediately.

The movers were 3 hours late and didn't call to tell me until the "arrival window" was an hour gone.

The team had poor English skills. Getting my questions answered was difficult - the guy in charge, Miguel, just read me the papers in front of me when I asked questions.

They GROSSLY underestimated the amount of space I would need on the truck.  I really don't understand how it happened, either, because I gave them measurements of everything when I was arranging the move.

    [12/4/08]

    Today I found out that:
    - I being charged $50 for storage on days before my delivery date
    - And my stuff also has not left Chicago!

I don't understand why I'm being charged to store things in Chicago when there's no chance my things will arrive before my "first available delivery date" on December 10th.

Also, Olympic has no idea when the truck will leave Chicago.  It won't leave until it's full, apparently.  When told "it's almost full" I offered to buy out the rest of the truck to get it moving, and then the story suddenly changed and the truck was nowhere near full.  Is it "almost full" or not??

    [12/8/08]

It's a miracle!  My stuff has left Chicago today!  I had to ask their shipping representative about not paying for storage on Tuesday since my stuff left Monday, and she had to go through an approval with her manager over this.  I'm surprised it isn't default protocol to automatically not charge the customer for storage that didn't occur.

    [12/13/08]

I got a call at 9:30am from the truck driver with NBA, the company Olympic outsourced the moving to, saying the truck would arrive between 12:00 and 1:00.

Here's the only thing about this move that has gone well:  it only took 5 days for my stuff to arrive after its ship date, and they delivered on a weekend.  I have a feeling the weekend delivery is merely coincidence,  though.  Still, this was nice.

Now here's the bad part:  Olympic picked up in a small truck, but they hand your stuff off to some company you won't know anything about (and won't be able to research) who delivers using an 18-wheeler.

I had to find $550 in CASH *AND* find a 26' rental truck with an hour's notice or else these guys weren't going to deliver my stuff.  My bank doesn't exist here in WA, and finding a rental with an hour's notice in an unfamiliar town is a hell I don't hope to go through again.

The $550 is apparently for the "inconvenience" of having to load the 26' truck and drive it 300 feet to my apartment.  I also paid for the rental.

    [12/14/08]

Got some broken stuff, the worst of which is a wheel they broke off my computer chair and a completely smashed CD shelving unit.

I'm told they do reimbursements, but now I am so sick and angry that I don't want to talk to them again.

Most of my stuff seems to have survived.  The packing they did on the TV was nice, but I wish the same care had been given to other stuff that got broken (chair, cd rack).

    [12/21/08]

Ironically, things that didn't need packing got tons of it.  A week later I am still tearing tape off boxes that were already well taped.  I also found that the shelving unit from my garage was disassembled by the movers and the little pieces of plastic that hold the shelves up are nowhere to be seen.

I have not attempted to get any refunds out of Olympic yet, namely because I don't expect any.  They've been so hard to deal with so far, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they asked to see the original boxes my stuff came in. Some of the things they broke are so old, too, that there's no way to prove the value.

I've had better luck calling the manufacturers of the items they broke and explaining that my movers destroyed it, and those manufacturers have been fantastic about sending me new parts.

    [In Conclusion]

Olympic is a sham operation full of crooks.

The price went from $2752 (initial quote) to a whopping $4868.  That is a $2116 difference. I understand a "quote" is just a "quote", and that the moving industry is full of scams, but I still find that completely outrageous.

Olympic completely low-balled me to get my business and then jacked up the cost.

    Here's what I paid:
       * $2100.00 upfront (at pickup)
       * $2128.36 at delivery
       * $550.00 SURPRISE!!! for them simply having to use the 26' truck I had to rent with zero notice
       * $90 for truck rental

    Grand total:
       * $4868

Don't bet your personal belongings and your wallet on Olympic Moving & Storage. Don't go anywhere near this awful company.

So if you use them for out of state, they just outsource all your drivers. Whether you get a good one or a bad one is a lottery. If you're willing to take the gamble then go for it. Otherwise DO NOT use them.

A quarter of my things are broken and I have yet to receive any sort of correspondence from my inquiries.

    Scam.

This is rather belated, considering we moved almost a year ago, but not too long after my review appeared on Yelp, someone from Olympic contacted me via Yelp to apologize for our bad experience. Unfortunately, he didn't really offer any way to make it up to us, so while I appreciate the idea it seemed like a rather empty gesture.

Perhaps they learned something, I'm not sure -- it's surprising to me the number of 5 star reviews, but I'm glad others had better experiences than we did.

This was my first moving experience using a professional mover.
    AVOID AVOID AVOID!
I admit, it was my own fault. I booked through a larger feeder company (USMS) who contracted out my move. We moved from Chicago to New York (Long Island) and had our stuff in storage for 3 months. Here is a description of all the things that went wrong in the move.
    1. I had to call 3 times to confirm the move and pick up date. They still couldn't guarantee me a time to come pick up my stuff. We didn't know if it would be 7AM or 7PM. As it turned out we were the first ones of the day so they showed around 8:30AM.
    2. The guy who did all the talking didn't do all the talking so well. Let's just say that there was a language barrier. Combine that with a sense of urgency on Miquel's part for me to sign everything and I really didn't know what I was signing.
    3. The price more than DOUBLED from the quote over the phone. We lived in a small 2 bedroom apt. with only 1 bed and they said we had more than 1500 pounds what they estimated. Yeah right. They also quoted us at 44cents a pound over  the estimate on the phone but charged us 68 cents a pound. we are still working this one out...
    4. The items that were not boxed up were either thrown into a box haphazzardly or taped to other items. Vaccuum cleaner was just wrapped in tape. Ironing board and fold up chair taped together.  You get the idea.
    5. They charged us $350 for moving supplies. They said we had 4 queen beds (2 bedroom apartment, hello!) that they needed to shrink wrap, used 40 + rolls of tape, and that they provided numerous types of boxes for us. Wrong!!!!
    6. Double charged us on the fuel charge.

And that's just what happened in Chicago!

Try to get ahold of them with out a 4 leaf clover in your hand and you are out of luck. I can't tell you how many times I called and left messages NEVER to get a call back!  SO fast forward 3 months. We are moving in and I say I want my stuff. Here's what happened next

    7. I called to set up the appointment and finally got through to someone. He said he couldn't guarantee me a date to actually move in. (so what, I just wait till they're ready?) I told them the times and days we were available and he said no problem.  I got a call a few days later sayign our stuff is on "the truck" and should be there on the "8th or the 9th". (PS another language barrier with Guillermo this time)
    8. On the 7th Guillermo called and said he'd be at the house between 10-12 on the 8th. I told him that was unacceptable as we wouldn't be there until after 3pm and that I had told the main office that. He said "I didn't talk to them" and that he'd call me back. Guess who never called back?
    9. I called Guillermo back and he said he'd be there on the 9th after 2pm. No, after 3pm. Well, between 3-5 and that he'd call 20 minuted before he got there.( NOTE* there was also some sort of discussion about Big trucks, Uhauls, and parking spaces. I really ahve no idea what he was trying to say but judging from the other reviews maybe he was trying to make me rent a uhaul so they didn;t have to drive the big truck into my neighborhood????)
    10. It was 3pm on the 9th and I hadn't recieved a call yet. So I called Guillermo and he said they couldn't come today. WHAT THE FUCK??
Well, maybe after 9pm. I said this was unacceptable and called the main office pushing every button possible until I reached a live person who assured me they would figure out what was going on and call me back. YEAH RIGHT, it's Friday 15 minuted before quitting time.
    11. I called back again and got ahold of someone who assured me that Guillermo would be at the house between 8 and 9AM saturday the 10th.
    Are you into wagering?
    12. Saturday 9AM comes and goes. Many calls to many people and nothing happens. They finally show up at 10:45 with the stuff.
    13. The stuff is unloaded. I peered into the truck and saw one of our tv's hanging in mid air upside down and sideways. I imagine it was being held up by the 4 leaf clover in my pocket....

YAY! we have our stuff and it appears to be all here and in fairly good shape.
Until we plug in the tv that was hanging precariously in the truck. Until we try to vaccum the carpet. Both things are not working. Now we have to go through the process of filing a claim. I doubt it's even worth it.

Moral: don't use these guys. They suck.

Everything was ok in the beginning. They were great at giving us a great price and getting the ball rolling, BUT from there EVERYTHING went wrong. We were doing an interstate move from Chicago to Tampa. First the price more than doubled from the original quote we were given. Then there driver called us every day to tell us he wasn't going to be there on the day he said he was going to be there. Finally when they arrived, they would only take a Postal Money Order, and they needed an impression of the credit card. If you're looking for an enormous pain in the a_ _, and you're into getting ripped off, then by all means, have them take your possessions hostage, otherwise, go with the more expensive service provider. These guys suck!

I moved from NC to IL and was not present at the pick up, my parents were. They lived in a very rural area and it turns out that the semi wouldn't be able to get anywhere NEAR my house because my parents live at a very dangerous curve and their driveway is very winding and narrow. So, instead of charging me for a rental truck, they movers waited for my dad to come with his pick up. While they waited they wrapped all my things in necessary packing material and moved everything outside so that loading would be as quick as possible (my dad had to go back to work). The whole time this was going on the office staff was in full communication with me and even though I was nervous because things didn't go as planned I felt so confident with the crew and the staff.
A few days later I had my stuff in IL and the guys unloaded the truck in about 1.5 hours and did an AMAZING job setting up everything where I wanted it and NOTHING came broke (except one glass out of 3 dish sets that I had packed myself).
I'm so pleased with my move since I was kept in contact with as needed and both the pick up crew and the delivery crew were professional and courteous.

Hiring this company was the worst decision I ever made. A salesperson named Alfredo pestered me almost twice a day for me to choose them as my movers. He quoted me a good price so I ultimately went with them. The movers with the exception of one were super unprofessional, and slow. The "leader" was on the phone pretty much the entire time and I know he wasn't talking business because I am a native Spanish speaker and he was talking to a buddy. The other guy was too busy moving one box at a time. What took 3 hours could have totally been done in 2. There was one guy who was quick and hard working. I called Alfredo to tell him what a lousy those two guys were doing and he never called me back. There was a nice lady who helped me after the fact and said I was going to get refunded part of my fee. I'm still waiting on that.

Avoid this place at all costs.

I had a move scheduled almost a month in advance (had someone moving in the same day) and they basically bailed on me the morning of my move due to 'mechanical problems' with their trucks. Fitting me in 'later' in the day wasn't much of an option. Not sure what professional moving company doesn't keep their trucks up to snuff, or even have a backup plan (on a busy May Saturday nonetheless). Reminding them of our contract didn't help either, as their friendly dispatcher lambasted me and basically threatened with 'maybe now I don't have a truck for you'.

Kind of sad, as they had been totally pro up till moving day. Should done just a few more pages of looking them up on Google, as there are much worse stories than mine.

Luckily we found other movers on short notice.
