#1 Greek in Seattle
We are so sad to hear that this place was set on fire too! But it is good to hear that they'll be back and running soon! We will make a special trip from our new home in Olympia to show support!
We love this place and always bring our friends and family! The atmosphere is very cool and a little rugged but inviting. The owner is amazing and you'll know if he is there because he'll come over and make sure that everything is good for you. One nite we were there when it started snowing and the last table they had was right by the front enterance (bit garage style door) anyway my wife was pretty chilly but the owner brought out a portable electric heater and placed it right behind here!! "What a guy!"
Make sure you ask if they have the stuffed peppers for an appetizer. These are mainly available in the summer and I really wish they'd have them all year. My wife loves the olive you gyro and I love ordering the LAMB SOUVLAKI ...oh yeah and the stuffed mushrooms...and the red sause they put on the greek fries!!
Many items are not traditional greek or mediterranean...its kind of a fusion ...and I think they are in a league of their own!
We'll see you soon!
Sadly, Olive You was a victim of arson yesterday.
As you can see from my previous update, Alex and I were JUST here a week ago.
My friend and I walked by today, and as we were checking things out through the window, Timur, the owner, saw me and waved, and invited us inside. What a great guy. He waited on us during our last visit, and is so cordial. Today, we hugged and he said that they are just glad that everyone is okay, and that all the stuff is replaceable, and that when they re-open, Olive You will be better than ever. This guy has a great outlook! He'd originally thought they'd be able to re-open in a few days, but then found out that they had to replace everything (I guess because of smoke), so it will be more like a couple of weeks. I for one, can't wait to go back when they re-open, as he mentioned new menu items, and it's just so great that they are looking at this as an opportunity rather than a tragedy.
Good for Olive You!

We stopped by yesterday afternoon because Mr. Gyro was (very disappointingly!) closed. I don't… Read more »
I can't say I was blown away by Olive You but I definitely had some tasty food here.
The menu is quite extensive and I could barely get beyond the appetizer options. I couldn't decide on what I wanted so I thought to ask for some suggestions from the waitress. Although I initially wanted to try something that had mushrooms in it, she suggested the spanikopita. Good suggestion! Although, she did hesitate a little and it made me wonder how well she really knew her menu. She also suggested the calamari which turned out to be a little fishy and chewy. Not the best I've had but not bad enough that I didn't keep eating it. The final appetizer we tried was a cheese and fig plate with pita bread. Very tasty!
In addition to the appetizers I also tried the lamb pizza with tzaziki sauce. It was spectacular! I was in a small group and we had decided to order a number of things to share. This little pizza was so good (and so small) we had to order another one!
Overall the service wasn't anything special, the food was okay (with the exception of the great pizza) and the atmosphere was forgettable. I'd eat here again if I were in the area but it's not on any of my top ten lists.
Olive You is perhaps one of the BEST places my girlfriend and I have eaten since we moved here from Idaho! Their paninis are litterally among the best I've ever had, and they're extremely affordable. Their waiters and waitresses are very nice and helpful, and I must say that I'm very sad to see them become a victim of the arsonist (I'm glad they caught him!). As soon as they re-open I WILL be back there!
OLIVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I am probably not the first person that has written that in this review. I must admit that I was a little skeptic on dining here, why? The name of course, and also that I love gainsburg and I just don't need to eat anywhere else on greenwood avenue because of it, but then I realized that the smell of the restaurant got the best of me. Well actually the sign that said jerk chicken special got to me. So since I was at a business dinner with a couple of wedding photographers, I thought that this would be a great place to expense dinner :) so we did, and damn it was worth it. The warm pita sampler was divine, the pasta's were incredible, and their kobe beef burger was amazing, wash that down with a couple of stella's and call it a night!!!!!
All I can say now is I LOVE YOU OLIVE YOU!!! hahahha
The first time I went here was about four years ago and it was great.
Fast forward to yesterday. The service was good, a little slow at worst but attentive. I may have had one of the worst salads I've ever had. They piled on layers and layers of gyro meat (I thought the menu said it was a lamb kebab, not gyro meat... bleh) so much so that the dressing never actually made it to the meager amounts of lettuce, tomatoes, and the two or three slices of caramelized onion. I remember having delicious fries last time I went here, fries with big chunks of garlic and fresh parsley. Their fries have changed too, they reminded me of Denny's fries if Denny's went shoestring and threw some pesto on top. For my boyfriend and I, plus tip, it was over $50.... for lunch!!! All in all, it was pretty disappointing. I won't be back.
This place is a perfect example of what I expect (or hope!) Greenwood to turn into. It has that perfect mixture of class, cool, and fun that I've come to expect from nouveau-Mediterranean restaurants. On many evenings, you'll find a couple guys playing their acoustic guitars while singing hip little swingish tunes. They carry an assortment of alcohols, with greater variety than most bars. They even carry Boodles and Hendrick's, which, as a gin drinker, I definitely appreciate (two places in Greenwood that carry Boodles)!
Then there's the food, which is quite good. I can't say they have the best gyro in Greenwood, since no one can compete with Mr. Gyro's! That said, it's still a very good gyro, and really, really big! Prices are pretty decent considering the size of their lunch plates, and dinners are moderately priced. They also have a number of twists on your standard lamb gyro, which is nice to see.
Great place, whether you're coming here for lunch, dinner, or drinks. Definitely a great place to bring a date or meet up with a group of friends!
On a busy night with no time to cook a healthy vegetarian dinner, I chose the Sultan's delight (stuffed eggplant) for take-out. Opening the box revealed a lovely medley of lightly sauted veggies in a flavorful green sauce. Under them were two veges of deep fried eggplant on a bed of rice. The eggplant was stringy and not properly prepared to remove the natural bitterness; and it tasted like french fries. I was also given an awesome house salad that I don't think they charged me for. Overall I was happy to get something healthy that I didn't have to cook myself, and I actually love the taste of french fries.
For some reason I had it in my head that in addition to offering a sit down meal option that Olive You offered prepared salads, bulk olives, etc. Have no idea where I got that idea, but it was stuck in my head that way.
So after my yoga class (with my original impression in my mind) I wandered down to Olive You to grab a salad to eat at home. A little shocked to find it an actual restaurant I wandered up to the tiny bar, waited a few minutes for one of the two bartenders/waitresses to notice me and asked for a menu.
Holy crap - a salad with chicken for $12? That must be one hell of a salad I thought as I contemplated walking next door to get Thai. Instead I flagged down the other bartender/waitress and put in my order.
Never once approached by either bartender/waitress to find out if I wanted a drink or anything - while standing at the bar - I watched the chefs, over the next twenty minutes, make my salad. Seriously. Twenty minutes to make a salad that consisted of - maybe - six items.
Once again I said to myself "This is going to be one great salad." Finally I paid ($15.20 including tip and tax) and headed home.
Famished I ripped open the box to find a mediocre romaine salad with small slices of avocado, half dozen clumps of feta cheese, and pieces of a very charred chicken. The highlight of the box-o-salad was the warm pita with olive oil on it.
Needless to say the Olive You in my head was MUCH better than the real Olive You.
Now having eaten there several times, I can say that the food is consistently good. I've never had a salad as the one of the other disgruntled posters had, so I can't comment on that, but I have had several of the lamb meals and they are phenomenal.
But more than the phenomenal food is the phenomenal new bartender who works Tuesday through Saturday during the evening. I don't like places where people just show up to "do their job" which is to serve the food or drink. This gal actually has conversation with you which is always a nice plus to any establishment. And being that she, Melody, is incredibly cute doesn't hurt either!!
ADDENDUM: I was back tonight and looked at the salad menu. All salads are served with some kind of meat, thus, in seattle, I am not sure that this would be that over priced. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not a salad entree kind of guy. Also, they had two new bartenders added lately, so perhaps that is why the one lady waited.....an additional two minutes?

Great Mediterranean food! They have inexpensive lunch specials that come with the best fries ever!
Sorry, Olive You. Walking through Greenwood, we were hungry, and your open-air restaurant and good smells lured us in. We sat down, you even gave us water, but when we opened the menus and looked at the prices, although the food sounded good, we saw the costs and went "for lunch? you've got to be kidding me." and regretfully went on our way.
Far too expensive! The food could be sublime, but we'll never know.
I don't know what happened to this restaurant over the past year but it's definitely changed from the adorable mom/pop/deli type place to a much more hip-looking, trying-to-hard-to-be-cool kind of place.
The food is still good (though more than a little pricey) but the atmosphere is just not as homey as it used to be. I don't think I'll be coming back here for that home-cooked-meal feeling.
This restaurant rocks as a date place. Especially when there is live music. I don't mean a full band with big speakers. I mean a guy or two with a guitar, maybe a girl singing. Something simple, out of the way and relaxing.
The food is great and a little different. A lamb burger with hummus on top. The crispy fries have a special sauce and feta cheese crumbles. Every time I've gone, I have always had a free small appetizer of warm pita and delicious, simple hummus.
Prices are reasonable and the restaurant itself is comfortable, if a bit small. During the warmer weather, they open the front windows / doors and have outdoor seating on the sidewalk area.
One note: Service is slow. Keep this in mind and you will enjoy yourself.
I have been generally very pleased with this place, and have been here about three or four times so far. They are kind of pricey for what you get but the food is usually pretty good.
I have eaten their greek salads, and also their falafel and gyro-like main dishes (I think they call it Alexander The Great). The Alexander The Great is a very very good dish, pretty large, and I have gotten it twice. I think for a Greek/Mediterranean restaurant it is above average and I will probably continue to go there.
The only thing I am disappointed about each time I go there is that when the bill comes, for 2 of us and maybe a glass of wine each the price is greater than 50 dollars.
There are plenty of other more authentic, more delicious, and less awkward paces in Seattle to find great Greek food.
Olive you is not the worst place I've ever visited, the food is hit or miss; for instance, the first time my mom and I tried the Figliocious--figs with blue cheese and pistachio--it was great! Wonderful slices of figs, the cheese was great and lots of pistachios. The second time it was fig jelly from a jar with a small scattering of bits of pistachio and cheese, for the same price! The gyros are mediocre, why go to Olive You for gyros when Mr. Gyros is across the street?!
The drinks are not that great, and while the atmosphere is pretty nice, especially with the front wall opened up, it's not worth the money to sit there, even if you're sitting for two hours waiting for service.
The service is usually fairly reprehensible. The owner himself has said that the food they serve is "good enough" for people who don't know real Greek food--that was enough to keep me from going back!
Gyros and fries were delicious! And I'm picky about my gyros.
Great if you're in the neighborhood but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get here.
I thought this place was great! I missed bellydancing, but I did get some live music. I went there over the summer on a double date and we sat outside on the patio. None of us know much about Greek/Turkish food at all, so we asked a lot of questions from our server. She was very helpful and patient. We never felt rushed to make a decision or silly for all of our questions.
We got a bunch of spreads that were DELICIOUS! And their pita bread is great too. Our entrees were all very interesting and good, but I liked the spreads the best. They also have a good wine selection.
We ended up here completely by accident, and we were skeptical at first. I mean, look at the name.
The menu is a hodge-podge of Italian pasta dishes, Middle Eastern appetizers, burgers, and semi-Moroccan/Greek entrees. Hodge-podge often means "we do nothing well." I was worried. Everything seemed a touch pricey, too.
The decor was a similarly odd mix. I'd put it somewhere between folksy-Ballard-seafaring-Swedish, wanna-be-Greek, and Oops-Xmas-barfed . . . again.
We waited awhile for our food, but the tasty draft beers placated. When the food arrived, we were shocked! It was all so colorful, so plentiful, and . . . SO TASTY! There were yummy shoestring fries covered in tasty condiments, a nicely-prepared burger, and a "spanokopita plate" - a big, delicious, lemony-flakey-olivey phyllo pouch of goodness with rice and roasted veggies on the side and the same fry-condiments on top. Wow.
PS - Bring a jacket. The front end is a glass garage door and it gets cold!
Completely unrefined. I guess ham-handed comes to mind. Ooo...Ham, that sounds good. A lot better than the sawdust burger I ate from this rancid place. Service is a pretty subjective thing to judge but continuous dirty looks does not good service make.
STAY AWAY!!
Greenwood, why can't you make like a chesterfield and satisfy?
Had lunch here on a busy Saturday. Seated ourselves on the sidewalk and shared spanikopita, tzatziki and a burger topped with caramelized onions and hummus. It was all delicious.
Service was prompt and friendly. The only part of the entire experience that was uncomfortable was the down-and-out looking folks that strolled by us on the sidewalk as we gorged ourselves. Oh, and overhearing a conversation about a stinky refrigerator.
Most of the time I've gone, the food was awesome but the service was decent but nothing special.
The last time I went in was to do a take-out order on a Friday night. I noticed it was very busy so I figured I'd get a drink at the bar while I waited. The whole time the bartender was really nice (and made good drink suggestions). About halfway through my sit ( which lasted 15-20 minutes) the music began and a belly dancer started performing around the restaurant. After a while I had finished my drink and didn't want another on an empty stomach, so I just had some water. About the time my food was done the bartender apologized for the long wait and said my drink was on the house.
So basically this time I got awesome food, great customer service, and a delicious drink on the house. I'm definitely going back again!
Edited to add: I don't really like their fries, but they're alright when they're still warm. They had lamb shanks as their special on Halloween night and... well... the meat was practically falling off the bones and it was simply divine.
I also very much enjoyed the belly dancer that was there on Halloween night AND the "green tea" that the waitress made for me. I believe it was basically a Long Island Iced Tea with Midori instead of coke. She did add some soda water, though, when she noticed I wasn't enjoying the taste too much on its own.
I've also had a good Margarita and a strong Cosmopolitan here. I do enjoy a restaurant with good drinks!

The servers are generally just okay, but the food is amazing and that's good enough for me! :)
Something is just not right about this place. Service is always slow. A few spreads and some warm flat bread should not take 20 minutes even if you and your wife are only one of two tables that are occupied.
The few other times I felt the food was a tad too greasy and or oily. However the food is good and redeems the place some. The owner seemed to be out for his employees and a little too intense ( maybe stressed?) making my visit that much less enjoyable.
They seem to be doing something right. They are popular with the locals. My experiences there left me perplexed and reflecting on what a terrible time I had and why I keep giving them another chance.
came in for lunch and had one of the sandwiches. It was good but the best part of the meal were the fries. I dont know what they do but they were crisp and seasoned with herbs and just amazing. Would order them alone next time.
Come hungry and don't come in a hurry.
This place offers an amazing cornacopia of things stuffed with other things. Just about everything is delicious. Rich mediterannian faire is paired well with their wine selection. You can also come in and order most of their specilty stuffed and hot foods from the glass deli case to go. One star deducted for variable service. Good food. Interesting items/menu.
I'm happy to have Olive You in my neighborhood. Although if it weren't close by, it's doubtful that I'd ever set out just to eat here. With that said, I've found the food at Olive You to be filling and tasty.
On my recent visit here, the boyfriend and I started our meal with the artichoke sampler. There were about 5 or 6 different artichokes stuffed with some sort of goodness for us to try. After finishing the appetizer, our salatas arrived. My chicken avocado salad was amazing and it may be the first time that I can say I ate and loved onions. The portions were large and neither of us were able to finish. In case you have a mighty appetite, don't worry. They also give you pita bread with your salads and we were given a small hummus sampling when we were first seated.
I'm looking forward to stopping in when the weather is warmer and the garage door is rolled up. Seems like a great spot to sit, eat and check in on the neighborhood.
The thing I like best about this place is that it delivers.
It's good and it delivers - that's enough for me. :o)
Not sure what happened with Jimmy F.'s experience, but ours was very enjoyable. Our group was made up of 2 meat eaters and 2 vegetarians, and all of us raved over our food. The service was prompt and friendly, and the dishes were delightful. The lay out inside was enjoyable and cute - a nice casual date or family meal spot. Restrooms were clean-enough and accessible, although one of ladies in our group felt they could have been cleaner.
We ate the:
-Salad with tzatziki sauce dressing (fresh and tasty, well seasoned tomatoes)
-Garlic fries, which came with roasted peppers, pesto and feta on top but the whole plate was well seasoned (no ketchup needed)
-Spanakopita (spinach & cheese savory pie with pastry crust) appetizer, which was just delicious. I recommend it highly! It's large enough for a single lunch, I might add.
-2 different gyros, both got yums from our family members
-Aegean sandwich, with mushrooms instead of sundried tomatoes. The grilling was lovely, and the sauce was delicious.
-Falafel platter, with tasty hummus and well made falafels and more of that fresh tzatziki sauce.
All were good, although my falafel was probably the least special out of the group. We all agreed that the Aegean was our favorite, tied with the Spanakopita. We would all return again! Meal came to about $50 for everything, including some cokes.
The food here is really good. That said, good luck getting to it.
I've eaten here a couple times and each time it has been a considerable wait. I've tried to go and left just as many times because I either 1. I get seated by their staff and never see a waiter in 20 minutes or 2. Am told to "sit anywhere" by the staff and never see any wait staff in 15 minutes.
Worthwhile if they could increase the service. Food and location have always seemed fairly clean to me, meat tends to be undercooked though.
Worth it if you have the patience to wait them out.
OLIVE YOU, I love you! (i know, so original). We always bring visitors here and recommend it during the monthly art walk. Love "Alexander the Great" among many of your dishes. The food is consistently delicious, service is great, chefs always offer free treats and there is often music and entertainment. Must go during the summer when the window/door is open!
My boyfriend and I used to frequent this place on a regular basis. We really liked the food and the service had been friendly. However, things have changed for the worse during the last few visits.
Last Sunday, we decided to go there again for a nice Mediterranean meal. We were seated right away but it took about 5 minutes before our waitstaff came to take our beverage orders. No one had brought us any water at this point. 5 minutes later, the wine arrived but still...no water. She then took our order and then left so we had to get her attention again to get some water. Then the appetizer arrived (Ooo Mujver - Grated Zucchini Fritters) although one of them was overcooked (charred on the outside).
Then we waited and waited... half an hour later, still no food. Our appetizer was completely gone (we were hungry) and we almost finished our wine. I tried to make eye contact with our waitstaff but she did not even walk near our table. Just when our patience almost ran out and we were going to go up and pay the bill and then leave, our food finally arrived. My boyfriend's dish was fine but my tenderloin was cold. (I assume that my dish was done first but they were waiting for my boyfriend's food before serving the two dishes together). The menu mentioned that there was rice with my entree but there was no rice to be found. Fortunately, I asked the waitstaff for it and she brought a side of rice for me.
All in all, it was a very disappointing experience. Although we do enjoy their food, there are many other restaurants in the area that serve similar dishes so we will most likely choose not to return to Olive You in a while.
FREAKIN AMAZING!
my co-worker and i LOVE this place. they deliver to us. often.
GREAT food. fast. even quick delivery!
the garlic feta fries are to die for...as is the oh-my-gosh burger! you'd be crazy not to fall in love with this place.
Olive You is my old neighborhood. I really wanted to like this place, because it is just another restaurant trying to survive, and I honor that kind of dedication.
But I never got past the delicatessen display case. They had some moldy artichoke hearts sitting in a pan of water with some weird whitish formations floating on top. I looked closer, and I could swear they were--moving. ??? Ewww. No telling what else is moldy. Nothing more I can do but leave.
Sanitation, cleanliness and freshness are EVERYTHING, people. Fresh, fresh, fresh. Please.
Delicious!!!
A local friend recommended this place for lunch in his neighborhood, so we met there to catch up a bit. Four out of five of us ordered the olive you gyros. Soooo good. I loved the greek fries with pesto, feta, and a red sauce. OMG, soo good. The gyros was also really good. Super juicy and tender lamb, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, sauce, etc. Mmmmm
No wait for a table at noonish on a Saturday afternoon. They were playing Batman Begins on the large plasma TV above the bar. Nice place. The menu had a bunch of greek tapas as well.
Hmm... Where to begin? The place is not well organized. It's hard to maneuver through the restaurant and it's more like a deli than a restaurant.
The hummus was EXTREMELY bland. The pita was fresh though, but it's not hard to mess up pita bread!
The only thing I really liked at the place was the Figliocious that we ordered. It had fig jam, pistachios, blue cheese and some honey. It was pretty good with the pita bread.
Other than the one dish that I liked, I was not really impressed. I've had far better greek food. I say definitely look elsewhere. Plus, you feel cramped and like your in anyone's way who is trying to manuver around the place.
I've only had delivery from here. Calling here is like an exercise in patience as though you were dealing with a grown retard on Ritalin. Sometimes they answer the phone in a timely fashion. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes they tell you to hold and forget to come back to you. Sometimes they actually complete your order and deliver it. And sometimes they don't.
Grant it, I haven't order delivery from here in a long while but only because last time after waiting nearly an hour and half I recycled their menu.
Sure, they've got some seriously tasty, greasy burgers with lots of crazy-ass Greekness going on, but it's not worth the time it takes to place an order or the time it takes to receive the order.
Olive You's pretty good. The food is good and there's a buttload of booze available.
Although you might want to stipulate that Kalamata olives are for FOOD, not martinis. Or you could just stick to their solid beer selection!
My boyfriend and I went to Olive You the other night in celebration of roping in a nearby apartment that we are super excited for. I wasn't sure about the place at first (I hadn't had Greek food in EONS and it looked a little pricey at first glance), but by the end I thought it was pretty darn good!
We decided to get a 7" Istanbul Pizza, which I highly recommend. It was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly. We also got several sides, which included asparagus, pita, dolmas, and lots and lots of olives. They were really great! I wasn't a huge fan of my Greek Salad, but my boyfriend loved his and devoured the 3/4ths of the salad left on my plate (I think I mostly didn't like it because I'm not a huge raw tomato fan).
For the amount of food we got (the pizza, several items from the "Bites" menu, and a beer), the bill was shockingly affordable.
While the servers seemed to sort of care less (our waitress checked her ringing cell phone in the middle of taking our order - what the hell?), the service itself was actually very quick. We didn't wait long for any of our food at all.
It's definitely a place that the two of us are going to go back to - especially since we'll be moving into an apartment nearby there soon!
****EDIT 10/23/07****
Yeah, so my overall opinion of Olive You has gone down some.
My boyfriend and I went in to have a nice romantic dinner together. When we arrived, there were no tables available, so they said that they would seat us at the bar until we could have a table. Well, they kept promising that they would give us a table...but when new customers started walking in, they would immediately seat them at whichever empty table we'd been eying the last few minutes.
By the end of the night I was infuriated, because it is not fun to try and eat and/or share big plates of food when you are sitting at a bar. For someone short like me, it sucks to have to somewhat reach UP to get to my food. Plus, I have terrible posture and dislike sitting on bar stools, since they have no back or support whatsoever.
On top of all this, we never received a knife, nor were there knifes in the basket on the bar, so my boyfriend spent the evening trying to cut his lamb kabobs with two forks.
The food was still excellent, but my opinion on the service has gone down greatly.
I stumbled across this place after shopping at Tweed down the street (which I stumbled across after getting my drivers license around the block!). The open-air format was inviting, and the food smelled delicious. There was a small table near the front overflowing with cheese spreads, olives, and peppers for the taking (and we did!). It was a sunny Saturday afternoon so it was crowded, but we managed to find a seat at the bar to have lunch. They were out of hummus so we ended up eating some other spreads and split a roasted lamb dish...it was tasty!
I really wanted to give it 3.5 stars because there were a couple of downers...the service was *really* slow...also, there's no wine list--instead the wines are all on a shelf along the wall, and there are no prices. On top of that, there was a large family eating at a table right in front of it so we couldn't get close enough to view the selection. We ended up ordering the house white and they started to serve us the wine warm/room temperature...
I would go back again, but I hope next time it feels more organized and I can get a better peek at the wine selection!
Our latest takeout experience was horrible. They have removed some of the more reasonably priced options from the menu. The portion sizes are ridiculous for the price. Upon opening our takeout order, my husband & I almost laughed at the measly amout of food in the bottom of the takeout container for which we just paid $18 per entree. This place is officially off of our list for takeout options (and dining out as well).
