I just loved this place! It looks very nice inside and all the barkeeps rock! I enjoyed my one martini but got to taste a few others and they were all very good. You can only drink here but they at least make their drinks really good. Ask them for menus of close by restaurants that deliver if you are hungry.
I also like the outdoor area in the back and the piano setup in the front. Their is definitely a nice warm and cozy feeling when at Olive or Twist and I like it!
Stop three on my Berwyn Tour de Force October 2009. I begged and pleaded my partner in crime to "pretty please with sugar on top can we please, please, please pop in to Olive or Twist"....she relented but now I understand why she was reluctant to allow me a visit.
We were on a very tight schedule and just reading the martini list could take hours. Seriously, its huge. Line after line of delicious martinis both savory and sweet, spicy and mild, fruity and fantastic. I took a preventative step and went with a glass of wine from the well rounded list on the chalkboard. But I still was able to sample (okay, swipe) some sips of the signature stuff and still drive home.
Raspberry Martini? Delicious! Thin Mint? Whole lot more potent than anything those Girl Scouts are hawking. Key Lime? Tart and tangy with a hint of Awesome. So many other offerings it is simply overwhelming to try and limit the options. Martini flights maybe?
Super sexy and swank room located immediately across from the Metra station with hardwood floors and exposed brick walls, this place would be right at home on Hubbard Street or the Gold Coast. A scaled down baby grand that anyone ('cept me of course) can play, attentive staff, delivery menus galore and a quaint little beer garden featuring murals of a streetscape make Olive or Twist the perfect year round suburban get away.
"....she's always a woman to me..."
echos of a woman's touch vibrate throughout this space.
...warm, cozy, inviting and definitely seductive.
$11 for 7.5 oz top shelf libations of sex in a glass ftw!
Beautiful outdoor patio for allowing the cool breezes to fondle your personals.
Free wifi and menus from local food joints to fill your tummy of the areas's finest.
Piano and pA to allow live local talent to sing to your soul.
Steps away from metra transport.
Approachable and delicious talent behind the bar to remind you there is no better place for miles around.
in other words...this place is money.
Went here for the 1st time this past weekend. Such a cute place! Carl was our waiter, he was very nice and talkative. The martini's I tried were the Almond Joy and the Thin Mint. They both were pretty tasty. My friends had the more fruity ones, like Watermelon and Peach. They loved theirs as well.
I discovered this place yelping in Berwyn, Thank you Yelpers. I found a Gem in Berwyn.
I am a Berwinite and love the fact the Berwyn has such a trendy place in its own back yard. I've visited a few times and even have introduced a few friends to this place who in turn introduced this place to their friends...Sorry Berwyn the secret is out.
I love the vas array of martini offerings. You cannot go wrong with what you order here. All the reviews about how nice and friendly the staff is and all the other good stuff you read are right on target.
As far as pricing....at $8 you cannot go wrong as a matter of fact your ahead of yourself here. I've paid much more for so called martinis... it's shameful out there.
Great place to stop by for a drink with friends...or a date ; )
Olive or Twist stands head and shoulders above any other bar in Berwyn. It is a cute little family owned and run martini bar and if you're lucky enough to know the family, you are treated as family. I suspect that everyone knows the family, because the day that I was there a lot of people where just hanging around, laughing, making jokes, watching baseball and having a great time.
The drinks are fantastic!! Vanessa kept letting me sample some martinis and they were all good, but I must admit that the white sangria was my favorite. Also, they have Summer Sandy. How can you not love a bar that stocks Summer Shandy?!?! And, if you are having a martini, the jalapeno stuffed olives are a must!
I can't wait to go back! :)
On Friday the 13th, my boyfriend and I made our way to Berwyn to check out this bar for the very first time, since they were having a party to celebrate their 5th year anniversary.
I have to admit that we had a fantastic time! This bar is conveniently located right near the Berwyn metra stop so after you've loaded up on all their tasty martini's you can stumble to the metra and head home safely.
The interior of this bar is really cute. I especially liked their leg lamp in the front window. They also have wonderful mood lighting throughout the whole bar and their bathrooms are very clean.
My boyfriend and I had a hard time picking out what martini's we wanted to try because they have about 30 different martini's for only $8 a piece. We finally decided to sample the following:
- Chocolate Covered Strawberry. Delicious dessert drink. Very yummy and artfully done, comes with a real chocolate covered strawberry as garnish,
- Cosmopolitan. Strong and urban with a twist of lemon and lime. Also, very good.
- Sour Apple. Not overly sour but certainly not sweet, served up with a dash of cinnamon and a real green apple slice as garnish. Very good.
- Mango Madness. This tasted just like the fruit itself only with a boozy aftertaste. If you like the fruity martini's I would recommend this one. Sweet and served with a cherry at the bottom. So good and tropical I wished I was on the beach.
- Blue Popsicle. Tasted just like summer. Remember when you were younger and you would get those rocket pops from the ice cream truck? Well this is the more "adult" version of that tasty treat. Very sweet.
- Thin Mint. Tastes just like the Girl Scout cookie. A scrumptious dessert drink for sure!
Also, the band they had playing was fantastic. They really jazzed up the atmosphere. We will certainly make sure that we come back to Berwyn on a regular basis in order to stop here and get our martinis on!
This particular bar makes me glad I don't live in Berwyn. Not that there is anything wrong with Berywn. In fact, I rather like the town itself. But see, there is one tiny problem... Olive or Twist is conveniently located right along the metra tracks. I am pretty sure that everyday on my commute home I would have to stop in for some delightful martini's and then, well, it could become a nasty, yet ever so delicious habit...
I love martini's but mostly the fru fru ones. Olive or Twist can meet all of your martini dreams, and did so for me. The ones that I remember include the Orange Dreamcicle (my personal favorite martini EVER), the Almond Joy and the Thin Mint. Yes, I pretty much drank myself into sugar shock. But it was worth it.
The bar itself is cute as can be with warm, dark decor and a very welcoming feel. I was in there on a Friday night and there was a good mix of people hanging out and getting their martini on. Vanessa M bartends on Friday's and that alone is a reason to go. She makes a mean drink! They don't serve food but do allow you to order or bring food in which is key. Just ask the friendly bar staff for suggestions or menu's and you are in business!
Berwyn isn't my idea of a road trip. But if you live there, or are going to be near there for whatever reason I highly recommend swinging by OOT for a cocktail.
I like just about any booze that comes in a glass. Except gin. And I also am having a torrid love affair with Red Bull. So, when I saw that there was actually a Red Bull martini on the OOT menu my heart melted.
Vanessa M. makes a filthy martini, but only works on Friday nights - so take that into consideration. Parking is ample, and the Metra practically runs right through the middle of the place - so transportation shouldn't be an issue.
I only wish this place was closer...then again - maybe it's a good thing for my liver that it's not.
Loved the decor, wanted to steal the lamps, could not believe my good fortune when every martini I ordered was a party in my mouth. The naughty kind of party, too.
Then, the bartender went on break, or was at the end of his shift, and the party was busted. The next person doing the mixing just didn't have the magic fingers that the tall, slim gentleman behind the bar possesses. Still darn good recipes though.
I'll be back once I figure out what my new BBFF's hours are. I highly recommend the Bobbing for Apples.
The bartender is a gem -- what a wonderful guy. His name's Carl and he's super cool and friendly, accommodating and has mad skills, dude. AMAZING. All five of our party were ohhhhing and ahhhhing over every sip of several different types of tini's -- almond joy, hawaiian, choc mint, raspberry, apple -- very nice. The atmosphere is so inviting and cozy. GREAT date place. Nice music. Good crowd. All kinds -- look like locals. Fantastic. I will make this place my regular hang out.
PS.. Carl recommended Anthony's Pizza for delivery to sop up some of the ethanol in our bellies and it was equally fantastic. Highly recommend it., and love the fact that you can just order in and its totally welcome with plates and napkins!!
Great neighborhood bar.
the atmosphere is cozy and inviting and the owners and staff are very freindly and welcoming.
a great place to stop in for a great martini or just a beer.
they also have a great back beer garden to enjoy in the summer months.
Yesterday, before heading to icky ass Lalos(read the review), my bf and I stopped here for a few delicious martinis. Are cool bartender Chuck was awesome. Also makes killer martinis and drinks in general from what I seen. The bar it self is comforting also, clean and classy. I will be returning soon. The banana split was delicous and sweet.
Olive or Twist...get it? very clever name
The name might be the best thing about this place. I was there on a Friday night at around 10 and no one else was there. The prices are somewhat steep but the inside is pretty nice. Good place to go to when you are on a date. Ton's of martini's to pick from with your choice of olive. Service was good. And if you don't like martini's they have a wide selection of beers.
What a cute place along the train tracks in Berwyn, has an upscale feeling while being very welcoming.
My review is long overdue, catching up. I was here with some fellow Yelper's and had a great time with all. The drinks were tasty and I loved the martini menu, I only have one complaint, too many to choose from so it took me some time as I went through all the descriptions. Every time I though I settled on one, the next one looked good also.
With all the choices, you have to just keep going back to work down the list. So yes, I'll be back!
A few Yelpers gathered here for a few martinis last night and we all had a good time. Chuck the bartender did a very good job of accommodating us and keeping fully loaded with martinis! I would strongly recommend the Bobbing for Apples or the Dreamsicle. I need to go back and try the toasted almond and the chocolate covered strawberry.
There was a good mix of people of all ages there and everyone was friendly and approachable. They have a little patio out back that I am sure will be great come the warm weather. So who wants to go back with me?
The first time we went into Olive or Twist, it was wintertime. We had quite a few martinis and really enjoyed ourselves. The bartender (his name escapes me) was cordial and patient
( it took me awhile to choose something from their large drink menu).
We have returned quite a few times, and most recently, realized the bartender can make a damn good margarita, which is great for the summer months.
We haven't checked it out yet but they have a cute back patio which we will visit soon.
Thank you Dave S. for putting this martini meeting together!
Olive or Twist is a beautiful little place with delicious drinks. And Chuck is a great bartender who is sensitive to people's needs. I ordered a Voodoo Martini (their own bloody mary type of martini) and he asked how spicy I wanted it. I felt ridiculous for saying, "Medium Spicy," like I was at a Thai restaurant, but without a flinch he made it just that way. Great enough heat to make my nose a little runny (sorry, gross), but not so much that I could't enjoy the other flavors.
I also had the Thin Mint martini. F*CKING YUM! Minty with a swirl of chocolate in the glass and of course whipped cream. Mmmmm....
That's all I have to say. Not sure why I haven't been here before, seeing as that I live only blocks away. I will be back. No question.
Best bar in Berwyn.
Ok, my wife and I are friends with the owners. But we weren't when we first went there almost three years ago... so I think my bias is excusable.
It's a friendly place. The bartenders are very professional. And the drinks are always good. Chuck makes the best Capt. and Cokes. And the martinis are consistently good.
Over the past few years, OoT (our affectionate nickname) has become less of a bar for us and more of a social outlet. Hell, I consider two Yelpers on this thread friends... and I met them there. (I won't out them and cause them any embarrassment.)
Have a drink. Meet some friends. Bring a date. Even keep an eye on the ball game... There's no other bar in Berwyn that's as chill as OoT.
Disclaimer: I am friends with the daughter of the owners. I was not here on a public night, but rather on xmas eve with the family and their friends. The bar was cozy and had a warm family feel to it. And the family that owns and run it are awesome people, and their friends are fun too. I tried several different cocktails and they were tasty.
I am saving a star until I visit on an open night, which I definitely intend to do.
Ok, so I am biased because my parents own the bar, but seriously, sometimes you just have to be. This is a martini bar in Berwyn that's well... fantastic. Some of the more popular martinis are the: Banana Split, Thin Mint, Mango, Bobbing for Apples (tastes just like Apple Pie!), Passionfruit, Snickers Bar, and Toasted Almond.
The bar caters to people of all ages, anywhere from 20s to 50s and 60s. (C'mon, my parents and their friends need someplace to go too!) The atmosphere is great with music (mostly jazz) on Tues and Thurs nights.
And if you find yourself in Berwyn or whereabouts on a Friday night, stop in and I'll make you a drink!
I adore this place...so much that I'm considering moving to Berwyn to be closer to it. Ok that isn't the real reason but it is an incentive. Anyway, it's totally worth the drive out to the burbs. Karl, the Friday bartender, rocks my socks. Every martini he makes is perfect. Definitely on the top of my martini list and I know my martinis! Cute atmosphere, awesome drinks, and parking! Score!
Delicious drinks. Cute atmosphere. I think the prices are a tad high. They seem like city prices, not Berwyn prices. But I do not mind as long as we can get a little more city atmosphere and life in Berwyn.
A very cozy place for some amazing martinis! Located so close to the Berwyn Metra station, I could find myself coming back for more.
This being my first time out to a bar after the smoking ban, it was kind of nice to be greeted not by smoke but a faint flowery and woodsy scent. That just added to the cozy atmosphere of the place. It's rather smallish, but very comfortable. Dark wood, and just the right amount of lighting. And a very cozy looking but also small enclosed patio area for the summer months. We were there for about three hours, and even though there were other people at the tables around the bar, it never felt that crowded (except for the one asshole who decided to stand in front of the hallway that led to the restrooms. By the end of the night, I just stopped saying excuse me, and just started elbowing him out of the way. There were many places open to sit.) I also noticed that there was a small selection of board games available for the patrons as well, so I will have to take advantage of that next time around.
Now on the the martinis. I can't begin to figure which one was my favorite. I had the chocolate covered strawberry, the banana split, and topped it all off with a thin mint (which tasted exactly like the Girl Scout cookie by the same name!) My husband stuck with one kind all night, but I can't quite remember the name. But it tasted just like a watermelon Jolly Rancher. The bartender was really friendly, and did an outstanding job on each individual martini. (Something tells me it can become a pain in the ass when it comes down to the fancy chocolate drizzled glasses.)
I will definitely be back, since there were so many of the other martinis I wanted to try.
I finally made my way to Olive or Twist and I thought it was just okay. The bartender was very attentive at first but once most of the people left it took forever to get a drink. That's right, most of the people left and it was STILL difficult to get a drink. For a while we were the only people in there and it was a Friday night so the atmosphere we were looking for was definitely lacking. The drinks were pretty expensive as well. Despite all of this, I would give Olive or Twist another try... maybe it was just an off night.
UPDATE: I have gone back and I still say it was okay. The drinks are expensive and I feel like the bartenders aren't the most friendly people. I'm just not so sure I'm a fan...
I have to give this place super duper kudos. As we walked home Friday night from OoT I told my wife, it is like hanging out at a friend's really nice house, drinking and having good conversation with friends. We knew no one walking in and felt like we had a new group of friends when we left. Good people, good drinks and a great time. We will be back often!
This place is a gem! The menu has dozens of tasty martinis. I've tried the chocolate orange, the chocolate strawberry and the snickers. The bartender informed me that they've stopped serving desserts, but the martinis are dessert-like in themselves. I was not there on a night with live music, but they have a piano at the front of the bar and I'd like to come back on an evening with music. The bar has big windows that look out onto the railroad tracks and it's fun to watch all the trains go by.
