I had the buffalo burger here. My first thought with my first bite was "OMG! I am so happy that I have like 20 more bites to go!" When I was finished, we walked around to the nearby shops and got better aquainted with the area. I think my ulterior motive was to fall in love with a little more just to give me an excuse in the future to go on a little drive to Hangtown... and grab me another buffalo burger from Old Town Grill!

My boyfriend and I were driving home from Tahoe and came across this place. We were so happy we did.

My boyfriend had the burger, which was very solid...but he loved his milkshake the most...I don't think I even got a sip :-)

I had the chicken sandwich, and we shared fries, all very good.

I also appreciated how clean everything was.

Probably the most memorable thing about this place is that they are SO friendly and the customer service rocks....this stands out considering good customer service seems to be on the decline.

Definitely check it out on your drive to/from south shore!

From all of those selections in Placerville downtown, my BF and me picked this place for lunch. We were so happy that we picked a right place!!

    - The burgers are great! They have a charcoal grill! The meat is so tender and juicy and the buns are nicely toasted. All the fries are made to order! Since those burgers don't come with fries, it might be on the little bit expensive side but it's worth it.

    - If you sit at the counter and see how only one chef takes care of all the orders all at once, you get so excited, waiting for your food! So even when it takes for a while to get food, you can appreciate his good work!

    - Very friendly waiters and chef! I can see that they try hard to give a good customer service. It's like good, old days that I thought it can only exists in old American movies.

    - My only wish is that... they can take credit card sometime in the future...

I'm looking forward coming back to Old Town Grill when I come to Placerville next time to try all of the menu items!

Heads up... they DO NOT take credit cards or checks. They DO take debit for a $1.50 FEE! Not pleased, felt highjacked.

I have been going to 88 Giant Burger in Pine Grove so compared to that this burger and fries were over priced and not a value. Strike 2. ... not going back.

This place was great! :) The food was really fresh and good. The Chef came out on the patio and was chatting with us about Apple Hill and even brought out a map and highlighted places that we would be interested in. The only downer was that I was charged $0.54 for extra spread for my hamburger. I thought that was kinda cheesy. I mean it is great food and great service.. just thought it petty to charge for extra sauce.  Take cash as they have a fee for debit.

    Awesome place!

BEST place in Placerville for burgers & chicken sandwiches!
Stuffed burger with whole cloves of garlic, mushrooms & feta cheese.. YUMM!!!!

John & Debbie & Staff are always ready to greet you with a huge smile, and a "Thanks for coming in", when we leave.

They also catered my daughters wedding. Fabulous!

I just recently got a job in PV, and I've been trying to get to know some of the local establishments though sometimes I feel a little intimidated eating in a fancy place all by myself. This place is definitely not fancy, and I've been here on two occasions and have been very impressed- not only with the quality of the grill fare and creative specials but also with the service.

There is literally one guy cooking all of the food behind the front counter, and sometimes he is slammin' busy but he always makes an effort to say hi and "thank you" to everyone patronizing his place. I overheard him telling someone that repeat customers are 80% of his business and I don't doubt it at all.

They also have a waitress who brings orders out to people- and she's cute and peppy and I like her.

The last time I came here I sat at the counter and felt really special because the cook called me sweetie and asked about my food. I love the way that kind of personalized service feels, because its so hard to  find anymore.

    Win!

Excellent.  Burgers are tasty and juicy and flavorful and perfectly cooked.  Only downside is that you have to buy fries separately.  Staff is awesome: really friendly and helpful and attentive.  I like the setup of the place.  Very low key, nice ambience for a casual joint.  We'll be back.

Very good quality reasonable food on the way back from Tahoe.  Tucked away in a quiet former mining town this spot had a casual dining room with natural light that was just what we needed.

Fries and sandos hit the spot and shake was legitimate.

After a vegetarian-friendly weekend in Tahoe, the crew in our car back was looking for meat. After firing up our iPhones and Droids, we settled on Old Town. The food was great with flame-broiled flavor.

Why I am writing this review, though, was the awesome service. A super friendly waitress kept things moving during the rush and was ready to wipe our tables the second we grabbed it in the crowded room. Better than that, when our food was brought over it was clear my boyfriend wasn't listening at the counter when I asked him to order one of the kooky Gold Rush named items and order another kooky Gold Rush named item. He embarrassingly asked.for the bleu cheese fries I wanted, but I asked him to cancel because we had tons of food. It was the chef who came up with a compromise. He whipped up a half order and gave it to us for FREE.  Pretty generous considering it was our mistake.

On the way out he made sure we enjoyed everything including the fries. I probably won't be back by Placerville again for a long while, but I would totally recommend the place.

A PERFECT PIT STOP TO TAHOE
When I leave Sacramento for Lake Tahoe, I try to stay hungry so I can stop midway in Placerville, the old Hangtown!  I make my way towards the Old Town Grill and try something new. Its an old country style feeling with trivia guides on the table to kill time. The chef has been serving the goods for about 10 years and today is no different with the grilled chicken sandwich with asparagus, roasted red peppers and feta. I always put my spin on it, so I add bacon, always a great addition! The average chicken sandwich turned into the perfect mouthful of flavor. You get a choice of fries from the regular to the curly, however the traditional ranch dip is replaced with the yummy Old Town Sauce, a nice light mustard with special spices makes it a nice choice. If you don't believe the hype, check put the guest sign in book with all of the happy patrons and you'll see mine that says, "Enjoyed the unique spin on the classic grilled chicken."  The Old Town Grill is less than old with a new taste to explore at every pit stop.

We stumbled on this little place on the drive back from Tahoe. I wasn't too optimistic about finding a good (non-touristy) lunch place in Old Town Placerville, but this grill was a pleasant surprise.

The food was tasty, reasonably priced, and not trying too hard. It seems like the kind of place that people that actually live in Placerville would regularly go to. I'll definitely go back next time I pass through town.

One of my former students who had received her Private Pilot Certificate under my training came to me asking for a checkout to a higher elevation airport than she had been accustomed to.   Placerville was on her list so off to Placerville we flew!

The town of Placerville is absolutely charming and we had a good honest meal at the Old Town Grill.  The food is good and like the other reviewer mentioned; the surrounding memorabilia is quite engaging (beautiful old town/time photos).

What a great find in Placerville. We were on our way back to the Bay from Tahoe and needed some lunch and didn't want to go to McDonals etc. Old Town Grill offered great good, good prices and amazing service. If i'm back in placerville i'll make sure to stop again.

From the front this looks like a tiny place but it's got good seating in the back and on the patio.  As for food - had a chicken sandwich w/asparagus on it and their special sauce and it was awesome.  The cheeseburger and fries were pretty okay.  The price is a little much for what you get. . .but I'd go back for that chicken sandwich for sure.  Service is great too.

For anyone that thinks there's nothing good to eat in the Placerville area, I challenge them to go the Old Town Grill.
Whether you are travelling through town to go to Tahoe, visiting the area's wineries, or need an event catered, I can't recommend OTG enough. The owner, John, is not only a tremendous chef but also a great person to work with.
The momentos on the wall are from John's previous career as Executive Chef for some of Sacramento's professional athletic teams - a career he excelled at for 10 years before deciding he needed a job which afforded him more time with his family. Today you'll find some of those same family members working in the OTG.
John is an excellent cook, and a dream to work with. Not only did he do all the food for out party, but he also had connections to all the key vendors - tables, chairs, shade umbrellas, etc. But he also had plans for all the contingencies - a canopy for rain, extra tables, alternate menu choices, etc. We definitely benefitted from his wealth of experience.
Yes, the restaurant is low frills compared to what you get in Sacramento or the Bay Area. But if you go to a restaurant for the food and great service, OTG is where you want to be.

I've been here twice in the last month. The food was excellent. The sandwiches were mouth-watering, and the garlic fries were some of the best I've ever had. The service was good but not great. We had different waitresses during each visit, and while both were very pleasant, they were not very attentive. The cook thanked us when we left, which was a nice touch. The atmosphere is what you'd expect from a small town diner. I'd definitely go back for the food.

Old Town Grill is absolutely amazing! From the organic meats to the fresh baked buns this place is top quality! The specials are great and very creative. My personal favorite is the "Soul Burger" which is a cheeseburger with grilled homemade Louisiana hotlink on it. The service is top-notch and very friendly. You might come in a stranger but you'll leave feeling like family! Oh and the food is great!!!

If half stars were available this would fall at 2 1/2 stars, as I was not too terribly impressed . The staff  was warm and friendly as we approached the counter to place our order . I would recommend bringing cash as there is 1.50 $ surcharge for using the ATM machine .
My husband and I both ordered from the specials board . A Jerk chicken sandwich for him and a Shaved Sirloin  sandwich for me . I admit it ,I ordered the Sandwich based on the cute description which said my sandwiched would be "snuggled " in a sourdough roll with Gorgonzola cheese and a jus . Conceptually, this sounds fantastic,in reality it was horribly difficult to eat as it was served on a piece of paper inside a plastic bowl with a plastic fork . It was a hollowed out sourdough roll filled with steak , Gorgonzola and lots of juice, which meant that the paper was a mess and little bits were melting into my sandwich . it was impossible to pick up or to cut  with plastic utensils .
My husband , being the gentleman that he is ,offered to trade me sandwiches . His opinion was , and I quote , " This is a delicious pain in the ass !  "  It was indeed good and  the meat tender, but I don't want to have to fight with my food .The jerk chicken , we both agreed was good , the chicken very tender and well seasoned .
Neither of the sandwiches came with sides, Which left me feeling like the sandwiches were a tad overpriced at 8.00 ... Fries were ordered separately at 4.50 $ and served with a really odd combination of mayonnaise and blue cheese placed in the center of a bowl surrounded by the crisscut  fries .The fries were good but I did not care for the dipping sauce . I left wishing I had ordered the burger instead ,as those seem to be well liked and certainly easier to eat .

Never a bad meal here.  John is a brilliant guy who runs a great, casual, local kinda place.  If there's something on the specials board order that.  You won't be disappointed.  And the fries.  Order the funky fries- I forget the name, something like "Miners Fries", you'll know which ones I mean.  De-lic-ious!  Then sit at the window and watch the tourists.  Great spot for people watching.
