I'm leery about carriage rides and things like that. I grew up on a ranch and was around horses and know how they should be treated and lived in NYC where horses would just fall over dead from time to time.
I think they take good care of the horses overall. They take their temp every time they come in to make sure that they are not overheated and make sure they are ok. The horse we were supposed to take got the rest of the day off when his temp was not within the limits and he wouldn't cool down. They got another horse that had not been out that day yet.

The tour was really interesting and I learned a lot. I would recommend this as a good way to get an overview of the city.

You can get a $2 off coupon on their website which helps with the price.

Came to Charleston on a girls weekend and decided to go on a carriage ride!  I was skeptical because I was thinking...there's a good chance this could be lame, but turns out it was pretty fun!

It was nice to hear about the history of Charleston (lots of facts that you probably wouldn't hear otherwise) and to see a whole lot of it without walking it all (Charleston is HUMID).  You get to see all the charming parts of the city and the amazing architecture (like the historic mansions).

I think one thing that would have been nice is if you had the option to get on and off at different points in the tour.  That way you could spend extra time in areas you wanted to look around and skip the areas you weren't interested in.

This was a good tour. Our guide did a great job and taught some interesting facts about the city of Charleston. This tour gives you a good opportunity to see Charleston and maybe discover an area you'd like to visit further. For example, after hearing about it on the tour, we decided to tour of the Nathaniel Russell House.

    Good tour company.

This is a great tour for learning all the history about Charleston.  Tickets are $20 per person, but we got $2 off by stopping by a visitors center.  All the carriage companies are the same price. At least that is what the guy at the center told us. It is an hour long tour that takes you around Charleston.  There are different routes so the streets don't get congested from all the carriages. Our tour guide and horse did a great job and was entertaining!

We had a super experience with Old South company. The driver was very knowledgeable, took us on a great route of downtown historical Charleston, and the ride was comfortable (they provided us with blankets because it was cold!)

We chose Old South because the ticket office on base had discount tickets.  Once we arrived at their stable downtown next to the market, we noticed they definitely looked a little better run than the other carriage companies.  Our driver/tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable.  Our kids (6 and 4) were too young to enjoy much of the tour, but they did like petting the horses and riding around on a carriage.  I was surprised to learn that the city does a lottery to randomly determine which of three courses to go on.  Next time we have friends visit, we'll have to try the carriage ride again to see if we get a different tour.  The ride was a little pricey, but worth doing when you have visitors.

It took me 5 years of living in San Francisco to finally ride a cable car--I avoid looking like a tourist if I possibly can, perhaps because I look like a tourist most of the time anyway.  So I can earnestly vouch for the carriage rides around historic Charleston offered by this particular company.  I took my 80 year old mother and some other relatives on a Charleston road trip and we decided the best way to see Charleston in limited time was through one of the carriage tours.  Our handsome tour guide, Will, was a recent fine arts grad (he's a painter) and had a great stock of not-too-canned and not-too-obvious stories about the places on our route and he added enough personal observation and detail that it made what might seem like a horribly commercial, old-ladyish activity a lot of fun.  Will added an architectural and design spin to his spiel, pointing out details about the street cobbles, ornamentation and orientation of the houses, and laced in enough history in this overly historic town to whet our appetites but prevent our mental arteries from hardening.  Carriage drivers from all companies are actually assigned a route by a city functionary as each ride departs the marketplace area in order to control the traffic congestion causes by the carriages on various thoroughfares, and we lucked out this ride, getting a ride along some of the most beautiful and interesting blocks in Charleston.

We came across this company after one their competitors across the street had concerns about it being hard for me to step into and out of the carriage with my visual impairment.  So, Old South's carriages have a ramp in which you enter and exit the carriage, which needless to say was a lot easier and not like climbing a step ladder.  Man,! the smell of the horses is ever present from inside the building to when you are out on the tour.  Our guide, Fred Ault, was wonderful, thoroughly describing the old buildings and homes that we came across along the tour.  Like Kevin S said, each tour company is given a different route each time they leave their building, as not to congest traffic on the streets.  We were fortunate to get a tour of some businesses and homes that were old banks and markets, slave houses, and houses of Robert E. Lee and other prominent southern figures.  Like Kevin's tour guide, Fred pointed out architectural details of each property.  He was very thorough in describing everything for me, as with everyone, giving a clear picture of everything.  When we got back to the building, he really wanted to know if he did a good job for me.  Needless to say, I reassured him that he definitely did so, definitely making his day.  When we are back again, we will have to go on one of the other two tours that they offer.  For tours of historic Charleston, Old South Carriage Company cannot be beat.  Oh,! Fred also had a wonderful sense of humor, also not giving us information that was too revealing or too vague.  Keep up the good work Fred and crew.!
