5 reviews for Old Silver Beach
I almost didn't want to write this review because this hidden treasure gets crowded enough with just the locals, the last thing I want is more people to show up!...but if they're yelpers, I guess that's okay.
Once, lost on a road trip, years before I moved to Boston, my boyfriend (now husband) and I discovered this beach while looking for another one. Like an oasis, it just appeared before us so we parked for $20 in a lot nearby and walked to this tiny strip of beach.
It was really crowded. I was sharing my blanket with strangers on all sides. People bring dogs by the way--you would think it was a dog beach, but I love dogs so it was fun to watch them throw up sand and eat it again because there's not that much else to do here. No restaurants within walking distance. Nothing. Just this little strip of beach skinnier than a Brazilian wax.
What makes this beach special is how warm the water is. And how clear it is. I'm not sure how this beach manages to not be like every other northern Atlantic beach, but the water is clear--not dark, or sooty, or filled with seaweed. Like FL Gulf water, it shines blue-green, and when you step in up to your knees, you can look down and actually see your toes. The sand is nearly white which is another unusual thing. Usually NE beaches are rocky or pebbly or shelly or dark brown grainy sand.
Old Silver Beach is truly special. You won't regret the Hell it took to drive here or the minutes you spent getting lost trying to find it.

This place was amazing. After a visit to Revere Beach (gross) and Crane beach (brrrr, despite all it's other pleasantries)...a visit to Old Silver was a welcome escape.
I found a list of "best" beaches in and around Boston, rated best for different things (http://www.theinsider....) and man it didn't disappoint.
The parking lot was a little crowded. The drive was a little miserable (I'm sure we weren't smart enough to wait until after commuter traffic had cleared though). But the beach was well worth it.
The water was the warmest I've felt on this coast. The sandbars stretched out so far that I got tired of walking in the water before it ever reached around my waist. The sand was so nice and soft.
It was a little packed, so I can see where a little frustration might be found. But seriously, if you want to swim, make a day trip out to Old Silver, just start early and get a good spot.

Is this the nicest beach on the Upper Cape? It might just be. And one thing is for sure--not many people seem to know about it, so it is certainly one of the best hidden gems in this part of the Cape. The views are vast and sprawling both north and south, thanks to the crescent shape of the beach, and the sand is clean while the water is warm. And the water actually has a greenish tinge to it, which you would expect more in the Caribbean than around the Buzzards Bay area. Definitely a top place to go if you like a little peace and quiet to go along with your swimming or tanning.
i was seriously looking forward to going to Old Silver Beach yesterday after reading the reviews. an oasis on the cape??? i was really disappointed. there is a $20 parking fee (crazy), the sand is somewhat white but not clean at all. there was all kinds of bottles and trash there at 9:30 in the morning. at 10am it was like the floodgates opened and i had about 20 minutes of peace and quiet before the crowds came in. and it is true, they will practically sit on top of you (sandwich? grapes? water? anyone??) much prefer the beaches at the National Seashore.
In my humble opinion as a Cape Codder for 11 years, this is one of the best beaches in Falmouth.
The sand is clean and soft, there are few rocks, the ocean is free of seaweed and it's often very shallow with lots of sand bars, making it quite good for children.
It's one of the best and EVERYONE knows it. This means, of course, that what little parking there is, is filled up very very quickly. The lot opens at 9am and there is usually already a line. Not a resident? Then it'll cost you $20, each time you go...ouch. The best way to get here is to have someone drop you off, or better yet, get on a bike, you can "park" that free of charge.
The only really negative side is that it's really crowded on nice days. You are pretty much guaranteed to be on top of other people and will most likely have to listen to screaming kids, 96.3 The Rose blaring from a radio, and deal with 15 year olds who have smuggled in beer.
I think it's worth it however. Best sand out of any of them!
