I LOVE this place! The people are nice, helpful, and very accommodating
And the best part: IT'S SO CHEAP COMPARED TO THE BIG STORES!. -

I asked for toilet seat bolts, the guy working there looked at me like I had three eyes and told me I had a weird toilet. He wasn't exactly trying to meet me half way.
I decided to look around anyway and in the back there were 4 racks of toilet seat bolts. At least that worked out.
I don't know that hardware stores need to be hip but this one is trying to be a little too hard. More hardware store, less hip please. -

All about this being a *hip* independent hardware store. Living in the area, it is within walking distance of our apartment, and quite convenient. However, service could be better.
It's not cool to talk badly about other customers in front of current shoppers. Also, we notified the clerk that they were out of a certain screw, and he couldn't have cared less. -

Old School Hardware is a great local business...4+. I come here whenever I need flower pots, organic fertilizer, potting soil or some other odds and ends. I live in an apartment so I don't usually have any big repair jobs but for those little things that need doing.
The place is small... kind of like a long hallway with stuff hanging all the way to the ceiling. It is clean and well organized. It is actually kind of shocking how much stuff they get into that little place. If they don't have what you are looking for, they will also order it.
Service: The owner and everyone who works here is super helpful and willing to help you find something or help you with a project. The first time I went, I came in for a plunger and the owner was there. I picked one out and when I went to pay... he recommended another one that he said was a much better value. That is exactly what I want from a local business.
Prices: A bit high. You cannot expect the same kind of prices you find at the big home improvement warehouse. However, they are still rather reasonable. -

I love this hardware shop. Small, yes, but the people that work here are incredibly friendly. The only issue is that I got a bucket of paint from them, which the girl originally quoted me at $17 and it turned out to be $34. Yikes. But an honest mistake, I'm sure,

I had a key made here this weekend and the people that work there are great. Friendly, chatty, etc. The only downside is that the selection is somewhat limited (but that's normal for a big-city hardware store). If you need something standard they should have it.

I love pfeiffers!
The guys who work here are fun and super helpful. I've gotten advice on everything from grout dye and wall paint to literature and community connectedness.
Like any small local business - prices are a little higher than ye olde box store, but whenever the budget will allow - this is my hardware store of choice. -

Great people, service and place! Got everything too and if they dot have it, they have no problem directing you to the nearest hardware store...even if it is their competitor!

My favorite tool in my toolbox is, you guessed it, the "stud-finder". I'm not kidding. Its the behind-the-scenes tool that allows you to decorate, upgrade, and remodel your shack without having it seem like one leg is shorter than the other.
So, Pfeiffer's. I didn't get my stud finder from you, though, you do have some studs staffing the place.
There is a good selection and helpful staff to be found here. I've bought air-conditioner filters, nuts, bolts, etc. The last time, I was trying to devise a plan of how to use eye-hooks and chain to prevent a door from slamming shut due to the apartment cross-breeze. The sales guy was very helpful in suggesting the best ways to go about it, and cut me some chain to use for the project. I've seen people buy and receive suggestions on paint, and you definitely have the neighborhood-where-everyone-knows-your-name feel going on here.
Screw Home Depot, go to Pfeiffer's!Listed in: The 42, ...because everyone should…

This place is Good-Will-Hunting Part 2 with Matt & Ben running a hardware store in a transitional neighborhood teeming with young professionals. The dudes in here are some of the most helpful hardware store-working people I've ever met. Seriously.
Also, if they don't have something (a possibility given the joint's size), they'll order it. Thumbs way up to this place (and it's proximity to my girlfriend's) -- one warning, though: don't call the dudes "crossword puzzle-solvers" because they seem to resent the idea. Thing is, they are. Just let it be. -

Pfeiffer's has a very good selection, considering its size. It's an extremely useful neighborhood store -- my hus and I probably run over here at least once every other week. The staff is also very helpful... they will not stop until you have solved the problem together.
The store also has a lot of neighborhood pride, in addition to a wonderful color scheme and font on its sign. -

This is truly an old fashioned, customer service experience. Very attentive, reasonable prices, great neighborhood business.

I'm sure there are better deals to be found in the big box hardware store that is probably a convenient walk for very few. And in the age of anti-social consumerism, perhaps ordering that little fixture off of Amazon seems more convenient.
But if you're in Mount Pleasant or Columbia Heights, this is the nicest little hardware store. Visit them to see if they have what you think you need, to ask them for help, and if they have the right item(s), get it there.
The convenience and resourcefulness of the shop is worth the investment of your time and money. -

I stepped in today for the first time though I have lived in the neighborhood for a year now. The guy working was very helpful and friendly. I was only in for a minute to get some boric acid (spiders, eek!!!). I am happy to support a local business and I will go back if I have any further hardware needs. Maybe I will get some seeds to start an herb garden!!

Seems a lot smaller from the inside and outside, but what they lack in horizontal space they make up vertically (look up). They had everything I was looking for...and more...including a key shop. Very helpful staff...there's a lot of them crammed in there!

As much as I love this little local hardware store, I can only give it 3 stars because the last 2 times I shopped there, things rang up at higher prices than advertised on the shelf. I doubt this is on purpose, but I can only imagine how many people have not noticed this and been charged more than they should.

I remember the store that used to be in this space. I think it was named "Larry's". It was an odd place where you could get keys made, have small appliances repaired and find a variety of stuff including some hardware. It was a gem in its own right.
The folks who bought it several years ago met a very local demand and turned it into a genuine hardware store. It fills a true need in the neighborhood and provides a good place to get what you need for home repair jobs, maintenance and your garden.
They've done a great job and the folks who own and work there are neighborhoodly friendly and helpful. They don't always have what I need but they have most of what I commonly need for home repair and garden. And if they don't have it and you can wait, they'll order it. They also sharpen scissors and knives and return them next day. A wonderful service.
In a city where there seems a monopoly on hardware (think big, box Monster Depot), Pfeiffer's meets a local need while being about as friendly as you can imagine.Listed in: When I'm need of repair

This is probably the best hardware store ever. I literally live here. No, not figuratively "literally"... but literally, literally... seriously (actually). I live at Pfeiffer's hardware. Todd Pfeiffer, the owner, rocks. The staff are all very knowledgeable, and work with you to figure out your do-it-yourself (with the help of seasoned others) tasks. I hear the bookkeeper over there (when he graces the store with his presence) is possibly the coolest cat alive.

When I first moved to Mt.P I was excited about patronizing my local hardware store, and the first couple of visits were great experiences. They were friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The past two times, however, there is this other guy working who is unfriendly, unhelpful, and far from welcoming. Imagining that he will be the one "helping" me when I go there in the future makes me not want to go.

Close and great people. Just had my knives sharpened there and I am so pleased. It was cheap, they did it in an hour, and the knives are sharp and happy.

I find myself going into Pfeiffers even when I dont have a reason. Great little store, great selection, SUPER helpful staff. Also refreshing in an age of big box Home Depots!

It's awesome to be able to brainstorm a project with the folks who sell the parts-- something I've never found at the big stores. Even if you don't take them up on their offer to price-match the big-box stores, figure out how much your time is worth. A quick trip to Pfeiffer's saves my valuable time, and is worth it, even after you figure in the slightly higher mark-up. I'm guessing I agree with their politics much more than Home Depot's.
Not going to replace Lowes, but going to replace many trips there! Everyone there is super responsive to customer questions and needs, I only wish they were open later! -

I'm consistently impressed that I can usually find what I need in such a tiny store. Very helpful staff. I can get what I need and go in very little time.

Pfeiffer's is a great hardware store. The prices are fair and the guys that work there are very knowledgeable. I've been to the store many times to have keys cut, to buy diagonal wire cutters (to trim bicycle brake cables/housing), to buy screws, to buy washers, to buy spray-on primer, to buy wall anchors, to buy a file, to buy drill bits, to buy a small hacksaw (to cut stripped chainring bolts off of a crank), to buy grease, and to buy other things. Every time I've come in, the guys that work at the store have been able to give me some advice or suggest alternative tools/approaches to solving my problems. One of the guys used to manage a bike store, so he knows a good deal about bikes. Pfeiffer's has a surprisingly good selection (even some simple bike parts like tubes, locks, lights), especially considering the size of the store, and the prices are comparable with big hardware stores that I would have to use a car to reach. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure they'll lend you do-it-yourself books if you're working on a project and buy supplies from the store.
