though the decor on the inside is true to Tahoes personae, don't let it throw you off. This is one quality steakhouse.

i have recently converted from a delicate Filet Minon boy, to a meaty, Ribeye eating man.

Old Range Steakhouse served up the best ribeye that has ever graced my plate. It was char-grilled on the outside and perfectly medium rare on the inside. The steak was slowly cooked, not rush ordered so it maintained its naturally robust flavor, and heaps of juice pored from within with each tantalizing bite.

the wine selection system is unique. Right when you walk in they have dozens of varieties of reds adorned with a moderate price tag. My party of 6 tried a merlot and a cab, both of which were exceptional.

portions are enormous so if you usually order a salad to tide you over, consider sticking with a few of the homeade rolls and wait for the true crowd-pleaser: high caliber steaks.

My only gripe was that service was a bit slow. Granted, it was relatively busy, but it took about 15 minutes for the server to take our order. After she successfully took it, everything was spot on perfect.

When we got here, they didn't have a table for us, so we sat at the bar and had a beautiful glass of wine while we waited.  George was charming and wonderful.  Our table was ready pretty quickly and then we perused th emenu.

Ummmm, can we all say MEAT?!  I had the tornadoes of beef.  OMG. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.  The bearnaise sauce was astoundingly delicious and I wish I would have complimented the chef while I was there, but I was too busy eating my meat!

I will certainly be back here next time I am at the lake.  I highly recommend it!

Last night went there mainly because my husband loves meat and always want's to go here.  I agreed because it was his birthday, and the 3-course $22 meal (fall, Weekly ad) was hard to turn down.  He stuck to his guns and got the regular portion fillet, and my petite fillet was just the right size, and cooked to perfection.  Can't wait to go back before they discontinue their special.

Well my 1st impression was WOW THIS IS GOING TO BE A GOOD RESTAURANT!!!!!
But it all changed when i walked into the restaurant and the bar was right in front.  Had my 2 year old and wife with me and they were looking at me like why am i here.  Im a huge BBQ RIBS GUY.  Been smoking ribs for a long time now and was looking to get the great same taste just like the restaurants name.  But again this place failed me in the ribs department.  1ST the HOT AS HELL RIBS wern't even spicy, 2nd you cant boil ribs then cook them it takes the flavor out of them you need to (smoke them with Hickory wood) over in direct heat. 3rd not a big sides menu. Want a baked potato but instead got instant mash potatos. And 4th lower the prices too expensive

LOL at the dichotomy of experiences at the Old Range.  I guess it's a bit of a metaphor for life in general...if you have unreasonable or inappropriate expectations, you're probably going to be disappointed.  At the Old Range, it's all about the meat.  Love it or hate it.  (It may be a thin line, but at least the cut of your meat will be thick.)

I had two hockey games this week, and the recession's had me cutting corners and missing meals, so to get myself back on track I decided to hit the Old Range.

I was flying solo, so I sat at the bar.  Alex was making drinks, but I gave him a heads up that I was going to order the prime rib.  He was back, took my order (Cowboy cut-the big one), and I had my food in no time.  There were a number of choices for wine by the glass, so I just asked George what I should get.  "Syrah" he said, and I was not disappointed, very nice.  Got the vegetables, mostly carrots and cauliflower.  I think the bread was better than in the past, too.  The prime comes with creamy horseradish, but you can get straight horseradish too, for the asking.  I had somma both.  Yum.  The meat was amazing.

The food and experience were just what I needed.  Had a pretty good game the following night, lots of jump in the legs, and I gotta credit the prime rib.

Ya, the boss has attitude that can be pretty much take it or leave it.  You kinda expect that from New Yawk or Chicahgo more than Tahoe, but hey, I told ya, it's all about the expectations.  If you are looking for some hoity-toity fru-fru you are probably at the wrong place.  Same if you don't get the part about taking your screaming kid outside.  Cases like that, you won't exactly find dude bending over backwards to make you comfortable.  Come in, be nice, say please and thank you.  Just remember it's all about the meat.  Cowboys don't cry.  Man up and eat your meat.

What in the heck happened to this place!?!?  The Old Range Steakhouse has tumbled onto to my "Boo!!! Hiss!!! List"   Things sure can change in a year.  Who's bright idea was it to amend the menu here?  Gone are the side dishes you used to be able to order with your chosen red meat --- dishes like mushrooms, spinach and other steakhouse classics.  You can't even get a baked potato in this place.  What sort of steakhouse doesn't offer a baked potato?

Instead you are given the choice between french fries and some red watery mess with chunks it in that the management has labeled ratatouille.  I suspect they picked up both items at at Costco.  The "ratatouille" was bland and french fries are the last thing I want when I order a $36 filet!  It appeared to me that many of the menu decisions were based on economics because the only other excuse I can fathom for making such diasterous changes to an already terrific menu, is a major head injury!

We were so excited to return to this place after the stellar experience we had last year.  What a disappointment!!!   Looking back at our recent visit now the first red flag that we should not have bothered came when we encountered the guy working the bar.  He turned out to be the manger. This guy was unfriendly and in such serious need of an attitude adjustment!  When we voiced  our displeasure over the menu changes he could not have cared less.  In fact, he had the audacity to tell us that we were the only patrons he ever encountered who had a problem with it!!   He really needs to read the Yelp reviews for his place! The Old Range Steakhouse doesn't even offer a kid's menu.  You can order your children a small (and I mean small) bowl of buttered pasta for a mere $9.  RIP OFF!!!

The service stunk, our waitperson even disappeared for a while. The next table left soon after we received our food and as we tried to eat, the woman bussing the table sprayed some chemical concocotion within a few feet of where I was sitting.  The smell was so strong, I couldn't finish my meal and when I complained, the guy in need of an attitude adjustment basically claimed that the restaurant has been spraying that cleaner on thier tables for the his entire tenure and they in fact, cut the cleaner in an effort to tone down the scent.  (I think they cut it with ammonia!) Did he apologize?  No. In fact, with that explanation he may have been trying to tell me that I was just too sensitive if I was so easily taken down by industrial cleanser!

I felt completely ripped off, let down and disappointed on this visit to the Old Range Steakhouse.  This establishment will not be getting anymore of my hard earned money!

After a day of snowboarding and only having eaten a clif bar, I was in the mood for steak.  This place was close to our hotel, Cal Neva Resort, so I called for a reservation.  I wasn't hopeful since it was 7pm on Valentines' day, but our group of 4 managed a reservation.  I'm glad we called though, because when we got there a couple in front of us was turned away and told they were booked for the night.

Decor is rustic, but had an interesting eccentric flair to it.   Don't bother dressing up, this place is come as you are!

Although I wasn't drinking this evening, A patron behind us was warned about ordering a double.  He was told he might want to reconsider because they pour their drinks very strong.  My kind of drinks!  They also had wine and beer.  No tap though, but decent bottle selection.

Now, the food.  This place is a steak place, no bones about it (haha).  The menu is small and it's clear their focus is steak.  I opted for the NY Strip, medium rare.  The vegetable du jour was ratatouille.  Both were delicious.  The steak was perfectly cooked.  A couple of my fellow diners opted for the chicken and ribs combo and raved about how delicious the chicken was.

Honestly I'd take this place over Smith & Wollensky's.  It's not the Chicago Chop House, or the Capitolle Grille, but well worth a visit.

I'd give it  a 1 1/2 and the extra half is due to the nice selection of affordable and decent wine. We had a solid bottle of wine for a good price.

One thing that should have loved my expectations was that given the size of the place (not large) we got a reservation the same day for a pretty large group on a Friday evening.  The wine, bread and steamed veggies were definitely the highlights of the meal.

The bone in fillet was uninspiring.  From first impressions, it looked like a perfectly seared piece of meat.  I asked for medium and it looked medium rare on the outside and didn't show any juices as all.  I'm not sure if it was seasoned at all before grilling but it could have used a sprinkling of salt and pepper before hitting the fire. Something seemed like it was off but I'm not sure.  Others had similar experiences, including my friend and his beef ribs. Most of us (if not everyone) left about 1/2 of the steak on the plate (the veggies which i finished). I will admit, it was a large slab of meat but after a day of hitting the slopes, I was damn hungry!

I think i can safely say, it's too pricey for average food. Knock $10-15 off the price of the steak and you've got an average steak place. I really want to give it another shot but a smaller group but it would be hard at that price...

No way is this close to 3 or 4 stars!

I'll start with the positives.  They accepted a pretty large group (9) on a Friday evening at 8:30.  The bread (and butter) was good.  And the steamed veggies (broc & cauli) were steamed well.

Now, for the "constructive" criticism.  I ordered the new york steak.  For $34, I would at the very least expect Outback steakhouse quality.  It didn't even match up.  The (large) steak was cooked to order (medium rare), but it was bland and flavorless.  I had to break out the salt and pepper to add something - anything.  I almost asked for A1 steak sauce.

The server checked up on us once.  None of us got a refill on our water or sodas.  The whole experience wasn't isolated to me.  No one in our group was satisfied with the quality or value of our meal.  I've had better steaks at Sizzler.

Bottom line:  Way too pricey for below average food.

Damn fine steak and great service.
The Wedge salad was one of the best I have ever had, it is amazing when something as simple as lettuce, tomato, bacon and blue cheese can be really extraordinary.

The wine rack is also a real treat, no menu, just a rack by the door with a wide range of interesting wine at a fair price.

Casual, so very apre ski friendly, but steak as good as any fine dining establishment.

The Old Range is one of the best steakhouses I've been to in California.  As other reviewers have noted, the prime rib is amazing -- it's freshly prepared, and the hosts know how to serve it.  The kitchen operates so that it maximizes it's meat quality.  You can be guaranteed that you'll get a high-quality cut of beef.  I've been going here for nice dinners for 4 or 5 years now, once or twice a year, and I've never been disappointed.

There isn't a wine list -- there's a shelf of wine as you enter the restaurant.  You look, you take a bottle back to your table, and the waiter opens it and serves you.  The whole place has the same casual, lodge-y feeling to it, from the wooden walls, to the hangings and the lighting.

Some things to note:

- The largest (Tankerman) cut of prime rib isn't on the menu, but you can ask for it and they will happily deliver.

- There used to be a massive porterhouse steak on the menu, but they've stopped carrying it, for some reason.  Boo.  It was a rite of passage to eat 40oz of meat.

- The filet mignon comes "dressed" with a mushroom sauce that I like, but some folks don't really care for.  Don't be put off by the sauce.  The meat is so good -- if you suspect you won't like the sauce, ask for it on the side.

They have an order of pork ribs that's good, but certainly not my favorite item on the menu.  If you want awesome ribs, there are better places to go.  This place is a steak house.  Order some steak, dammit, and you'll be happy.

Well, apparently some people don't like this restaurant. I've been living in Lake Tahoe (North Lake) for 16 years. I have been to Old Range Steakhouse six or seven times and every time has been fantastic. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, don't go because you won't be happy. Service is friendly and sociable and also knowledgeable about the local area. So, next time...leave your babies at home, because some people who go out to a nice dinner don't want to hear crying and all the other obnoxious noises that small children make.

The wine list (or cellar or actually wall) is very good, prices are ok.  The food is kind of bland - the creamed spinach had no cream, the steak was a bit overdone, no blended drinks (well, the waitress came back and offered a strawberry daquiri after we asked for a blended margarita - we're not sure what motivated that!)  The service was reasonable.

it's a very small and crowded place, the decor is definitely kitschy in an old fashioned small town steak house way.  There's no splitting of entrees (guess business is too god, but you can always get the gnocchi's (at $17 to take home and split the other entree.)  Unless you negotiate something at the bar.  It's a down-home place, so everything is negotiable.

The portions are huge, so don't expect to go home hungry.  I love steak and I go here once a year, you always get the same stuff, so no surprises, it's just not my favorite.

Amazing steaks, excellant beverage selection and bar, great ambience.

Minus 2 stars for this conversation and the subsequent lack of service:

Us: Hello, do you have a table for 8?

Host: Nup, best we can do is 2 tables of 4,

Us: Okay, but we have a birthday in the group (fact!!) and would prefer to sit together.

Host: Makes no difference to us.

Invariably, we were seated at 2 tables side by side and pushed them together ourselves so not much lost but they could certainly do with a little customer service training. Wouldn't go back - to many other choices.

This past weekend I was taken to this Steakhouse by my fiance and his friends who always visit when they're in Tahoe. The restaurant is small, but cozy with interesting decor. I loved almost everything about it. I ordered the cowboy, which is a huge cut of prime rib. I thought I was that hungry until I realized that they don't weigh the cuts and just gave me a huge slab. Leftovers! The only way they could make it better would be if I could get more options. It was either steak fries or veggies. Couldn't I get both? Or maybe a potato? Its okay though because I ordered a yummy Cesar salad and that was waay more than enough!

The wine list is great and I'd give it more if all I'd done was drink wine (excellent walk-up selection of wine), enjoyed the kitschy decor, or  looked at the fabulous view of the lake through the windows.

Unfortunately, we also had the food; I was unimpressed. 'Osso Bucco' was a largely unseasoned lump of veal on the bone. My rib eye steak was certainly medium rare in the middle, but it was also barely cooked on the outside - not totally seared as it should be. Only 'OK'. Service was also not great - waitress decided to argue with us when we said we weren't fond of the osso bucco rather than do something classy.

Best prime rib I have ever had. In my opinion, just as good if not slightly better than Lawry's in Los Angeles.

Extremely tender, perfectly seasoned cut of meat. Au jus (is that spelled right?) was perfect. The potatoes, dinner rolls, and salad that comes with the meal was very average though. But I came here for the meat! And excellent meat is what I got. There is just something intrinsically beautiful about a slab of cow flesh that is still slightly bloody and undercooked sitting on a clean white plate in front of you.

It will be pricey. The large "cowboy" cut of prime rib will run you $32. But it is huge. And if a 138 lb Asian male like myself can finish it, so can you. Also, there is a splitting fee of about $10 - $12 for sharing entrees.

You can also order side dishes to share with the table for an extra 9 bucks (sauteed spinach, mushrooms, broccoli, or brussel sprouts). We got the spinach, and that was okay.

Staff was extremely kind in accommodating our party of 5 on last minutes notice. (We showed up without a reservation. But luckily, they squeezed us in when someone canceled. I think you should make a reservation when going.)

In summary:
* Prime rib is the best.
* Minus 1/2 star for average sides (salad, potatoes, veggies, bread).

Old-school straight-ahead steakhouse, with that yesteryear Tahoe charm that I, for one, appreciate. Love the dark wood decor, booths, and low orange-cast lighting. Views of the lake through windows just big enough to frame the view, but not so big as to let too much light in. Now for the food, in three-word sentences: Servings were huge. Caesar was tasty. Strip steak yummy. Potatoes were salty.  Didn't experience any of the "rules" others mentioned, but didn't ask for anything special, either. Our service was just fine. If you want ginormous steaks, and give points for atmosphere, you will enjoy this place. It's not cheap, but not much in Tahoe is.

I've only been here once, on our annual Tahoe vacation, but it was quite good. My three daughters wanted steak, we had driven by this place, and decided to try it. It turned out to be a pretty good steak house, but with one small flaw:
it lacks a kids menu. Parents should consider that before taking a large brood of kids there. It ran $170 with tip, to feed one adult & three kids - but that may explain why it wasn't jammed.

Everything else was great. We were seated right away, and decent rolls appeared on the table. We started with salad - the waitress recommended we split one among the four of us, since the salads were huge. She brought four plates, and we shared a first rate Caesar salad. As she said, it was enough for all of us.

For the main course I had the rib-eye, medium rare, and asked for a side of horseradish  which the waitress brought before I could blink. Service was fantastic throughout the meal. My kids had a small rib-eye, fillet mignon, and fish & chips. They all reported it was first rate. Portions were large, and none of us could finish.

The snow was piling up, so we passed on dessert, but I'll bet that would have been good too. We will definitely be back - especially as my kids get too old for kiddie menus.

I am totally disappointed in this place.

I have eaten here before and really liked it for its rustic charm and quality food.  I recently returned on a week night only to find that the restaurant closed at 8pm.  The area is a ski resort area and what is it doing closing so early?

I walked in a few minutes after 8pm (yes the doors were unlocked & all lights on).  The manager greeted me in a very surly attitude and was very no-holes barred about accommodating us.  He went on to say that we should have known they would be closed by now.  C'mon dude!

I'll definitely think twice about going back to Old Range.  I guess the recent reviews speak wonders about it's current business model.  I just hope they can bring back the old great attitude.

This place has the best Prime Rib I have ever had, period.  If you are ever on your way between the North or South side of the lake, stop here for dinner; especially after a long day on the slopes.  The Prime Rib is prepared fresh everyday and if you want it rare, it is bloody good.  They also have three sizes (all of which are big): cowgirl, cowboy, and tanker truck (or something to that effect).  So don't puss out and be a girl, go "Broke Back Mountain" style and get at least the cowboy portion, you won't regret it.

Other pluses are: the communal Cheese-Its up at the bar and the wine rack (instead of having a wine list).

This place is legit. Great steaks, well priced, the walk up wine rack, I could go on and on. It's not a fancy, stuffy steakhouse; it's exactly the atmosphere you want from a Tahoe restaurant. I've never tried the ribs, but plan to soon. The prime rib and the rib eye are my go to orders. They also just received a full liquor license, something every steakhouse needs.

Definitely a place oozing sentiments of the old West and cowboy style aura. The portions of food are also chuckwagon sized. If you're in the area, hankering for lots of carne, and want a good selection of it, this is the place to go. However I think personally, the steaks are not as well seasoned as I like. If you're willing to pay a bit more for something more fine dining, hit Spindleshanks down the way. If it's pure unadultered meat  you're looking for Old Range is your answer.

Best Steakhouse yet! We weren't able to make a reservation until really late...so we decided to do take-out. This has got to be the most expensive take-out yet, but it was well worth it. I ordered the Filet Mignon with the mushroom/wine sauce, and it was to die for! They also gave us a ceaser salad on the side, and I believe mashed potatoes too. Seriously though, it was soo delicious.... I can't wait to go back! I took off one star because they couldn't accomodate us with seating..and because there was a guy smoking out in front...

We've been going to the same places in Tahoe for literally decades.  We decided to branch out and look up a new place and we definitely struck gold.

Place feels like a perfect combination of Tahoe old school, but not tired or cheesy - just cozy and welcoming.

Amazing steaks, awesome walk-up wine rack, and something for even non-meat eaters.  The salad that comes with the entree is fantastic, and the service was friendly and prompt.  The Porterhouse and Prime Rib were some of the best we'd had, and the vegetable sides - especially the broccoli - were incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked.  We didn't have dessert this time, but that just means we have to come back soon.

My fiance and I went to the Old Range Steakhouse just last week for the first time.  I got the full order of ribs not realizing that they were a full rack of ribs so the portions are huge.  The ribs were good!  Dry rubbed, very tender and very meaty.  The barbecue sauce was just okay though. I wanted to try the ribs from hell but wasn't sure how hot they'd be.

The red potatoes that came with the ribs were REALLY good as were the sauteed mushrooms that we ordered on the side.  We were too full to try desserts so I can't comment on them.

Overall we enjoyed the food at the Old Range and we'll go back.

Prepare to be inundated by directions, requirements and rules at this marginal establishment. the first thing you'll see upon entering is a sign which declares that they do not permit corkage - wtf. if you're not going to allow outside wine, you'd better have a decent list, which they do not. in fact, they don't have a list at all - you have to exit your table and walk up to a wall with individually priced bottles, and then pick one out. again - wtf. the menu includes a ridiculous barrage of rules: "each diner must order an entree" and "no splitting entrees", "hall pass required for restroom visits" (jk) etc etc. !! i've been to kindergarten - I don't need a refresher course. if i'm going to pay $32 for an overcooked slab of Big Brown, it had better be somewhat decent and I should be able to share the extended maceration experience with a partner, as well. to their credit, the ribs were good, and the cocktails were potent, but I'm afraid "underwhelming" is the kindest adjective I can come up with at the moment.
