    Good prices.  Varied selection.  Huge!

The Old Oakland Farmers Market is one of the largest I've been to.  It stretches a couple blocks between Clay and Broadway along 9th street, and even branches out a bit both ways on Washington.

There is a prepared food section between Clay and Washington, with a Roli Roti, and miscellaneous stands selling sausages, tacos, empenadas, salsas, breads, calzones, popcorn, beef jerky, pies, etc etc.  Walking more towards Broadway you hit all of the fruit and vegetable stands.  If you shop around a bit, you can find some decent prices.  Sometimes there are heirloom tomatoes for $1/lb.  Once I bought a huge bunch of beets that was probably at least 3-4 pounds for $1.50.  There are always seasonal deals as well, on corn, persimmons, etc.  Usually there is an egg stand and flower/plant stands, as well as a lady selling live catfish from a cart down towards Broadway.

On the branched out sections of Washington, there are more fruits and veggies, as well as a couple craft stands.  Going towards 10th street, there is even a stand that sells duck and chicken balut, as well as salted eggs.

Starting around 1:30pm, many stands start wrapping things up and clearing out product.  At this time, you can get bags full of tomatoes, eggplants, or misc veggies for as low as $1 a bag!

Being so close to home, I come to this farmers market pretty much every week, so I will definitely be back.

    Here's why 2 stars!

Star#1 I feel and support the local farmers when ever I can.
Star#2 the vendors are trying so hard to make us customers.

That's it I don't have to go any further then that. I was moved by how some old ladies granny like grow their own veggies and try to sell them next to legit license vendors. Some even strew the items on a blanket on the ground selling lemons, fresh figs, celery stalks and among other items that can be fetch from nearby business trash cans. Personally I wouldnt buy them if that's the last thing to eat on earth. I mean who knows what pesticides has been put on them and how it was handle prior. The only good thing that comes out of this, is that the prices match their offerings. So they're not trying to undercut other vendors. Their prices are cheap because there's no overhead or lease to pay. Everything item sold is 100% profit. No way never ever would I eat or buy it.

Checking in at this farmers market earlier today I yelped, "Of course the farmers market even in Oakland, CA is on steroids! And a great assortment of Asian produce mixed in too!" Working in Oakland part of every month for the last six months, I'd no idea until the other day that such a stupendous farmers market takes place every Friday.  I also realized today that although I'd created a Bay Area list (Oakland for Work and San Francisco for Play), I've been giving Oakland short shrift as I bopped around SF, sampling as much as I can in the city by the bay while barely paying any attention to where I worked.  I actually like Oakland's Chinatown better than San Francisco's because it's NOT a tourist destination but a business center by, for, and about Chinese (and other Asian) businesses.  But reviews of the many places I've discovered in the East Bay have languished as I've pursued more popular territory.  Today that's about to change!

The Old Oakland Farmers Market is one of the greats, combining the best of what I've experienced at markets from France to upstate New York to my hometown of Washington, DC.  First and foremost the prices are cheaper than back in DC.  Locally grown apples, peaches, nectarines, pluots, and plums could be had for as little as $1.00/pound. The bakery has the best baguette I've had since leaving Paris (not surprising since SF and the Bay Area have a strong local bread culture) as well as other delectable pastries and pizza.  In fact though, I bought my veggie pizza for lunch too hastily because I turned around there was a vendor selling rotisserie chickens in the same machine I'd seen at a Paris market with the chicken fat dripping down on rosemary potatoes roasting below.  So I bought two lunches that day plus lots of fruit, pastries and a baguette that I somehow managed to eat by myself.  I love that I can get a good lunch at this market, not just fresh delicious food to prepare at home.  Needless to say I will not be skipping this market on future business trips to Oakland, nor will I be ignoring SF's little brother any more on Yelp.

My first Friday at my office's new Oakland location and I couldn't be happier knowing there's a Farmer's Market within walking distance. So many great veggies, fruits, flowers and food options. I have to admit I hung out where the food was more than anything. I got chicken from the Roli Roti truck and bought breakfast at the Brioche stand. I can't wait to try out the other vendors!

Best East Bay farmers' market, I think! Temescal and Downtown Berkeley are wayyy overpriced in comparison. Here you can get a BUNCH of vegetables for $0.50-$1.00, whereas the same bunch in Berkeley might be...$2.75. I think it helps that Old Oakland is in the Downtown/Chinatown area. A great place to get some fresh produce and check out what's going on in Chinatown too!

The dates and the eggs are my two must-buys at this market and even without all the other tasty treats to purchase at this market, these two things would keep me coming back.

This is a smaller market than Grand Lake, but I so much prefer this one. Fewer people, less pretension, just good and fresh food at very reasonable prices.

I come here for lunch often, but never buy produce. The chicken rotisserie and the sausage cart are my favorites. There is also calzones and the vendor actually brings a clay oven with them, which is pretty cool. One of these days, I will buy produce from here :)

i used to love coming to this farmer's market when Clare's Old Fashioned TeaCakes were here. I was able to pick up many end of the day bargains as well. Nowadays, it doesn't seem as worthwhile coming to the Old Oakland Farmer's Market anymore. I don't see as many end of the day bargains, usually the Asian vendors advertise these deals. Free parking is not found anywhere nearby, which is another downside.

I will now give away the secret to this market!

Come EARLY. I was always pretty disappointed by this market because I rolled in around lunchtime every time. The stuff always looked kind of depressing and picked over. I thought it's because the farmers bring their seconds and discards to this market. But no, that's not the case! You have to be here EARLY, like 7AM, to get the best stuff! Some farmers I didn't even know existed, because they sell out of all their stuff and go home by 11:30.

My favorite place here is Kashiwase farms, by the way. It's $$ and it seems kind of out of place compared to the very cheap places but it's worth it for top-quality organic fruit.

I bought some "day" berries, they look like a cross between a raspberry and a blackberry. Anyways, the next day I take them out of the fridge and they are covered in tiny maggots. Gross!!

So much for taking trips to the SF Ferry Building to get $3/lb pluots on a Thursday or Saturday, which I grin and bear sometimes.... my new stop now is Oakland's Jack London Square Amtrak station, less than a 10minute walk to the Old Oakland Farmer's Market.

Vendors give you HUGE WEDGES for samples here.  You can get your snack satisfaction here by just perusing the goods.  I found this amazing pluot/peach vendor who sells tree ripened stone fruits for only $1/lb.  AMAZING.  They also carry sprouted almonds (love the Tamari flavored ones).  I LOVE IT!

Prices are so much better here so I don't get the impression that only rich yuppies are entitled to fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.  Another reason why I am loving Oakland more and more.

By far, my favorite farmer's market ever. Ol' faithful (Heart of the City), move over because there's a new sheriff in town! Why I come here every Friday before I commute to work:

    1. The size: larger (more variety) than Jack London Square and Grand Lake's.
    2. The variety: many more vendors to choose from, that way you can get the best price for your items.
    3. The set-up: Sure, it gets considerably crowded by the time 7:30a hits, but the stands are organized and lined up along street blocks (unlike the chaos at Grand Lake).
    4. The price: the prices you SHOULD see at a farmer's market--cheap! $1/ lb for stone fruits, $2 for the biggest head of cauliflower you've ever lugged onto Bart, cherries for ~$2-3/ lb, super cheap leafy greens, $3 bouquets of flowers, etc.
    5. The clientele: before 8am you're going to have to fight for space at stands with the old Chinese ladies. Hey, I prefer that to the twenty-somethings or thirty-somethings dragging/ pushing along their progeny at Grand Lake any day...or the crackheads at Heart of the City.

Sidenote: Some vendors don't provide bags--so bring your own!

Oh how I love the farmer's market! Though smaller than the Grand Lake Market, this market is still bustling and less claustrophobic. Many of the stands have delicious samples and eager vendors. The ambiance is friendly, though there are a lot of little old asian ladies. I suspect the quality is amazing because, hello, if a cheap asian like myself as well as many other asian ladies are willing to pay a lot more for veggies and fruits that they can get in Chinatown, you know it will be worth it! The market's perfect for a cute summer date. What's more romantic than getting locally grown food to share? Or buying some artisan soaps or a unique piece of jewelry. Right now, check out the tree-ripened stone fruit, berries, and my favorite grape tomatoes! The way to a person's heart is through their stomach! Quality food and quality times.

I actually enjoy going to this farmer's market than the one at Jack London Square which I find to be overpriced. This market is always a pitstop for me on Friday mornings before I catch BART. As you enter from Broadway, the first thing you smell are the herbs...basil...etc. It's like aromatherapy and a great way to start the day!

Hey, I live in Berkeley, grow my own vegetables, cook, bake, can my own fruit - all that shit.  So I know a good farmer's market when I see one and this is WAY better than the bobo hippie-chic FMs in my own 'hood.

The prices and selection are awesome!!! and the food is hella-good.  In addition to picking up stone fruits at $1/lb, $.50 for a bunch of cilantro, and 3 for a $1 corn, we ate some awesome tamales (the guy must have had a dozen types, including at least 4 veggie options) and some crazy stuffed middle-eastern bread that we bought after the guy literally fed us a whole package worth for free that he slathered with tasty spreads.

Definitely making this a part of the rotation!

This is a Chinatown farmers market.  That means dirt-cheap produce -- which is great, unless one's in the market for something organic.  You won't find it here.  Twin Girls -- which also services the Grand Lake and the Claremont/Temescal markets -- is the only organic vendor that I saw, and they sell tree fruits only.  If, like me, you were hoping to find organic lettuce, cucumbers, onions, or melons, forget about it.  I did see small cantaloupe -- non-organic, of course -- for $1 each, which I thought was a superb price notwithstanding.  I didn't buy any though.

Personally, I shop 95% organic, and I don't care about the marginal extra cost.  Irrespective of the arguments made otherwise, no one is ever going to convince me that spraying my food and the soil with poison has/will have no consequences to my (or the earth's) health.  I did buy some hot peppers at the market, however, because spicy peppers are sometimes hard to find.  I'd get those again.  I'm eating some now, and yes, they are spicy.

As for prepared food vendors, the selection is minimal -- many of which I've not seen before.  My favorite is Scream Sorbet, which I usually patronize at the Temescal market on Sundays.  There was a baker I've never seen before (Brioche) and an Italian vendor (Home Maid from South San Fran), but I can't vouch for their stuff.

Grand Lake is a busy market and is nice for the festivity, but the Berkeley Markets are my best bet, as they are virtually all organic.  While Thursdays is the only certified organic day, almost all of the vendors on Tuesdays and Saturdays are organic as well.

Although they have the same vendors as the others, the people behind the stands are so much more friendlier for some reason - which makes my shopping experience at farmer markets even more fantastical! & blah blah blah I agree with all the good comments below!

During a break from class, several of us walked out to the Farmer's Market to grab lunch.  Even though it was threatening to rain buckets, we braved the weather just so we could get the Roli Roti combo -- a quarter of a roasted chicken and the best roasted rosemary potatoes you have ever had.  An older gentleman was selling large and small portions of some of the best peach cobbler and key lime pie that I have ever had.  He was friendly and very generous with the samples.  There were four of us, and we bought two of the smaller pies and took them back to class for dessert.  The Sukhi's Indian food booth was out, and they too were expansively friendly, and generous with samples.  One of us was from out of town and loaded up on chutneys to take back with her to the North Coast.  When we got back to class, everybody who had just brought a sandwich was beside themselves over how good the chicken smelled, and one person made a mad dash to pick up the last of the Roli Roti before it closed and class started up again.  Unfortunately, we had to pass up some delicious-looking pizza and empanadas, but a person can only eat so much without risking a food coma!

I love this farmers market.  It is reasonably priced I think due to the proximity to China Town.  Favorite things:

~Fresh flowers bouquets for $3: I never thought I'd be able to afford to always have fresh flowers in my home!
~Organic, no GMO Tofu blocks for $1.50: Made at their West Oakland Beanary, this tofu is AMAZING and if you change the water every day, will last up to 2 weeks (not that it takes me that long to eat it!(=)
~8oz of pure Pomegranate juice for $2.50: it's super strong so I mix it with water. Healthy and tasty. Going to have to get a bigger bottle next time and use it like juice concentrate all week.

At first I was wary that this place would be an expensive albeit organic version of whats in China Town.  It kinda is, but some of the veggies are nicer and prices (if you pay attention) are comparable.

Within a few short blocks you can purchase: nuts, berries, fruits and veggies plus sorbet, soap, jewelry and some pretty funky t-shirts!

I loved walking down here during my lunch breaks on Fridays. It'd always be something to look forward during the dreary work week. I'd check out the unusual Asian vegetables and buy some on a whim. It was hit or miss but it was always fun giving something new a try.

Some of my favorite vendors were the tamale lady, the samosa guy, kettle corn, and the nuts vendor. I remember always coming back with a bags full of vegetables and goodies and my co-workers asking what I got this time. Before we moved, I think more co-workers were making the walk to the Farmer's Market too.

Wow.  One visit to this market will have you fleeing SF for its niceties.

We went on a blessed and rare Sunday off together around 11:30 AM.  The market was not crowded and it was easy to meander through all the offerings without getting bumped, stepped on, or strollerfied.  (Moms here didn't have M-80's up their asses like they do at the Ferry Building Market--- just counting the minutes until their multiple mom playdate/trip to Louis Vuitton/mocha-choka-frappa-bitchee latte.)
These moms were the kind who want their kids taking in the beauty of fresh, organic produce, explaining flowers and tomatoes to them in little people terms.
The kind of mom I had!  Perhaps this is why I love farmer's markets so much.

Everyone there is selling something they have cared for, much like a child, from seedling to sprout to lovely fruit.  Your soundtrack is a low, humming saxophone, your backdrop, a misty Oakland morning.  Your bonus: free grilled fruits and veggies from a venue tent, compliments of  the Oakland City Association (I think).  Completely different payscale for this market than ones in the city, too.

We left with enough natural beauty to feed us well for the next week.  Pumpkin flatbread (NOT from Sukhi's- please- overrated), delightful heirlooms at 2.50 a pound, peaches bursting with sweetness, organic strawberries, zucchini, and carrots.  We didn't leave with bruised egos/produce, sore toes, or bad attitudes.

      Thanks O-town.  We'll be back!

I'm a little biased since this farmer's market is half a block away from my place.  I've been to the El Cerriro Plaza, Lake Merritt, Ferry Building, and Jack London Square farmer's markets and by far the Old Oakland one is my favorite.  It spans 2 blocks in both directions covering the entire street which makes it feel spacious (unlike the Lake Merritt market).  You can get:

    - Tons of fruit and veggies and some hard to find Asian ones
    - Flowers
    - Catfish (live, still swimming)
    - Apple juice (the freshest ever)
    - Afgan food
    - Indian food
    - Rotisserie chicken
    - Sweets (Bakesale Betty's and many more)
    - Tamales

...while listening to the occasional live band or musician.

    I heart Oakland.

We're so glad you added some new faces to the mix:  Scream, Bakesale Betty's (those chocolate ginger cookies-YUMMY), Cafe Gratitude, and a mysterious crepe place we keep missing.  And the increased selection of organic produce is a warm welcome.

    My tummy says thank you.

I love Farmer's Markets. This one satisfies the craving. Friday mornings are a double treat when I remember to bring cash and pick up a tasty morsel on my way to Friday morning meetings.

As I have found in every Farmer's Market, some booths are overpriced. I find it helps to look around for a bit before surrendering myself to olfactory temptations.

    A good place to start:

The Grand Harvest booth has an excellent cinnamon bun (try the peach) for $1.50. With a cup of coffee from Caffe 817, the caloric indulgence will keep yer tummy full for hours. And for lunch, the guy with the falafels (close to Broadway and 9th) always serves up a delicious, lip-smacking meal. Veggie samosas across from Grand Harvest are big and delicious for just $1 apiece (and the lovely man there gives me a free cup of chai every time). And the kettle corn..... ahhhhhh (gurgle gurgle, sputter)...... sooo good.

I left the fifth star vacant because of the fishy-fishy-fishies (on Broadway) splashing dirty fish water on me as I hurry on by. Smelly.

I am a SUKKA for a Farmer's Market, so when there is one near me you bet your bodonka donk I am gonna be there!

Friday's from noon to 2p.m., get your bodonka donk walking and grab something for lunch, fruits and veggies for later and flowers for your honey or if you're on my same boat...yourself.

I love the half roasted organic chickens, tamales are the bomb and OH MY GAWD......the samosas for a buck at the Indian stand are out of this world!!!!!

So yeah, I am pretty stoked!

I really only go here for lunch because it is a short walk from the office.
I am mixed about this place.
I like the live music and food stands. I don't like the over crowded streets.
The Hot Dog guy is kinda expensive considering you would need 3 of those to fill up.
The tamales are the same but 2 for $5 is an ok snack.
Kinda hard to find seating down there in the bench area around lunch time but I attempt anyways.
Overall I say 4 stars because it is there, they try and it is better then nothing.

    Fun Fridays!!

How I enjoy strolling along, taking that extra long lunch break, grubbin on some huge inexpensive chicken, and people watching.

    yum, yay!

I came to Oakland for a conference in the area.  Well there was a lunch break and I saw the Farmer's Market so I was game.  Besides, it was a beautiful, sunny day outside so I had to get out there and enjoy the weather!

There are several options in terms of fruits and vegetables which is nice.  I do suggest going through the entire place first before you buy your food because there may be a better option along the way.  My friend wanted pomegranates, but the first stand we saw had brown ones that looked like they were too old.  We searched for a second stand and found nice, larger, delicious pomegranates.  I came across a stand that had delicious dried "French Prunes".  It wasn't too sweet or sour, just right and nice and healthy.  I got a pound for $5 which isn't too bad.

I do like the variety, from duck eggs to fruits to vegetables to kettle corn to even catfish.  I returned to the conference with several yummy snacks to eat and I wasn't the only one.  Plenty of people went to check it out as well.  Also, the fruit and vegetable stands give out free samples so it's nice to be able to taste what you are buying before you buy it.  The vendors are pretty nice and you get live music too (at least the day I went) so that's fun too.  A nice way to spend the afternoon on a beautiful day.  Great food at your fingertips!

BUUUUUUR-UUUUURP! Mmmmmm...onions n falafals!  Again.  This is a GREAT Farmer's Market and I love hitting it up and getting the Falafal Salad from The Art of Falafals Catering stand.  I'm tasting those badboys for the rest of the day.  Washed down with a heavenly slice of Charlie Frank's Red Velvet cake and I am in HEAVEN.  Oooh and my organic strawberries, olollaberries and raspberries are going to be fabulous when they adorn my cheesecake pancakes tomorrow morning.
See, if you were dating me (and sleeping over) you would get some too! But you're not. So :P  Mine. All mine.

Who can ask for more than witnessing a grown adult steal a couple of Fuji apples (and he got caught...lol), old ladies eating the samples like it's a meal and taking produce like it's free.  Wow!

I must say not much organic selection here and I only found one vendor that sold pesticide free produce.  The diverse music on a beautiful day was a plus but finding parking was horrible!  It was nice bumping into my dad though.

For some reason, this market continues to be a hit or miss for me. I've been first thing in the morning and a hour before closing and I gotta say, the later you go the better. Most vender's don't really start up still about 11-12pm due to the lunch burst of business near by who come in for a lunch bite. However; for me I need an early farmers market or a later afternoon one such as the one in Hercules. However; the vendors here are some of the best. The produce and food is fresh and flavorful but prices can be on the high side.
Try to find your prefect time to go and see what you find!
