5 reviews for Old Mill Cafe & Bakery
Out of business. How sad.
We picked out a bike route so that we could stop in and eat here. An old favorite, but we rarely visited due to the delicious calories.
I headed in for lunch today looking for something somewhat healthy, and this really wasn't the best place to try to do that. There are a great number of sandwiches on their menu, and if I were with my sister, we could have continued our search for the Best Ruben in the World... but I ended up with a half-sandwich, and a salad.
Overall it was just fine - but problem is, it was just fine. Nothing too terribly exciting. The balsamic dressing was pretty tasty, and they use mixed field greens for their salad (thank goodness) - but the sandwich was pretty boring. I guess that with all the panini grills and such that I've been spoiled into thinking that that's the way a sandwich SHOULD be - and it should be, damn it. But I also should have known that it wasn't going to be that way - I CAN read. Anyway, the other thing that was a little bit annoying is that when I changed my order and she went back to tell the cook that I had changed my mind I could hear the entire conversation (b/c it was pretty slow in there) - and he was like "well what DOES she want?" and that 'tude kinda annoyed me.
Overall average place, and not really a place that I will need to go back to. It's unfortunate since I don't have all that many options for something "off the cuff" in Clackamas. If I could hit the wine list, or I actually ate leftovers, then perhaps this would be a good place to go (based on other reviews). So, I guess that I'm going to have to start getting into SE Portland for my lunches... I need to find a good place that has a lunch special for $5. Where are you?
Portions galore!
The first time I was here I was out with the girls to catch up on love and life. Our waitress was so nice and kept calling me 'sweetie'.
I ordered a pastrami sandwich which was about 9"x5" - It was HUGE! I didn't know they made bread that big. Not to mention it was probably about 4" high! I could only eat half and took the rest home. While they didn't have a large variety of wine, the wine they did have was a nice selection by Pete the owner. We sat by the window laughing, sharing and watching the snow that evening fall for a half hour.
Two weeks later, after 'sleeping in' with my beau, we went there for brunch and the waitress remembered me with the loud girl crowd! I was impressed. This time we had omelettes that they must have cooked with six eggs per plate and about a cup of filling, plus another 1/2 cup of cheese. We definitely could have just ordered one and shared! It also came with a potato souffle' to DIE for. You MUST order this - very rich, sinful and OH SO GOOD!!
There are two areas of the Old Mill, there's a more casual booth/bar setting on one side and another section set for more formal dining and nice nooks for privacy. It's actually a restored flour mill and surrounded by other buildings which have been preserved. It feels like a little town outside. A bit of a rustic mood right smack off of Sunnyside Road.
I think this is really a 3 and halfer, but closer the 3 than the 4. The building itself is really cool and old, and the staff are quite nice. I've only been for lunch, and although some of the dinner things look good, they're just too much for one person. The sandwiches are good and I enjoyed the veggie tempura. Not a bad place to stop off if you're in the area, but not quite a destination place either.
After going back a few times, I have to downgrade it to a 4. We've had some bad meals there, like a Reuben that was cold in the middle. Today my bacon had a piece of plastic attached from the wrapper, but I did get a free extra egg. Good thing I saw the plastic. The service remains exceptionally polite and pleasant. They have a nice outside eating area in the warmer months, but it is small and people walking into the restaurant have to walk through it, which is a bit awkward. This remains a great spot for breakfast and lunch, but I am just not as enthused about it.

We came late, about 10 minutes before closing, and they were so gracious. The Reuben was delicious… Read more »
