7 reviews for Old Hickory Steakhouse
While my taste buds did not really enjoy the grass fed tenderloin (in all fairness our *AMAZING* server Steve told me it was an acquired taste), I felt I had a wonderful dining experience. It could (again, going back to Steve) the incredible service we had, but overall the dining experience and food was great.
WHAT TO TRY: The truffle fries, beet salad and white Sambuca (a drink). The truffle fries are the best I've ever eaten and the beet salad had just enough cheese it in to not over power the taste. As for the white sambuca, our waiter was superb in preparing it. He literally coated the glass then caught it on fire. Worth the extra 5 minutes.
As for the truffle mac and cheese... egh, I've had better at Bookbinders.
I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to enjoy fine dining with a unique menu that's not your average steakhouse.
This restaurant is the only redeeming factor of the Gaylord National Harbor hotel!
Please find my review of the Gaylord hotel to understand the disgust I had with the entire establishment prior to my arrival at this restaurant. I would have written the entire weekend up as the worst service weekend ever had it not been for the fantastic experience I had at the Old Hickory Steakhouse.
Arrival: Our initial table was close to the front of the restaurant and near the bar. This was not the evening, or location, I had in mind for the night and asked if it would be possible to be moved closer to the river. We were quickly ushered, without question or fuss, to a waterfront table with panoramic views of the river. A perfect setting for the beginning of a wonderful night.
Starters: We had the full cheese plate and the tartar for our starters. The staff was very knowledgeable and the lady who prepared our cheese plate took our tastes, wine selection and entrees into account when selecting our courses. She certainly hit the nail on the head as all of our selections were to our liking. The tartar was perfectly seasoned and the accompanying quail egg was exactly what the dish needed for the finish.
Mains: We both had the grass fed tenderloin. For our sides, based on recommendations of the staff and other reviewers here, we chose mushrooms and the truffle fries. Again the staff were 100% on target as the memory of the perfect truffle fries still makes my mouth water to this day. The mushroom medley was earthy and a perfect compliment to the grassy flavor of the steaks.
Dessert: I had the bread pudding, she had the green apple sorbet. The bread pudding was well executed, great flavor, perfectly sized portion. However, clearly made in house with a great texture and perfect level of tartness, the green apple sorbet was the star of the evening's desserts.
Staff: Our waiter and the entire staff of the Old Hickory Steakhouse, in complete contrast to every other restaurant and staff member at the Gaylord, were consummate professionals. Perfectly polished, competent, knowledgeable and service oriented professionals. Our waiter not only made great recommendations, but when he got wind of our desire to make it to the roof in time to see the fireworks on the national mall our check arrived and was processed in record time. Within minutes we were out the door and happily on our way to the rooftop in perfect time to watch no less than a dozen different fireworks displays across the skyline.
I have never been happier with a "steakhouse" dinner. I even hesitate to call it a steakhouse as it is so much more than you would expect from the title.
While I will NEVER return to the Gaylord as a hotel guest, the Old Hickory Steakhouse has won themselves a fan for many years. I only have one request, don't change a thing!

I was definitely dissapointed. When a meal for two costs almost twice as much as Ruth's Chris, it should be stellar. Expect to spend at least $325.
Both my steak and my boyfriend's steak were cooked incorrectly. He ordered medium and it came out medium rare. I ordered mine medium rare and it came out medium well. I ordered the grassfed tenderloin, which was so succulent. It would have melted in my mouth like butter if it had been cooked the right way.
Another problem - The valet was not clearly marked and couldn't find any valet guys anywhere. Had to park in the parking garage. Normally I wouldn't mind however, it was thunderstorming.
If you can get over the steak and valet issue, there were several things that were particularly good, which brings it from my rating of two stars to three.
Pros:
The view (particularly awesome)
Cheese plate (great taste and good portions)
Truffle mac and cheese (very rich)
They serve grass fed tenderloin (cows aren't meant to eat grains!)
The decor
Great area
They also have a cigar terrace with a Spanish cedar humidor. We didn't get to try this out after dinner. The weather wasn't too good and we were stuffed and wanted to get home.
This was my first time at the National Harbor. I will definitely go back to the area to check out some of the other restaurants.
This dining establishment at the Gaylord Resort is as fine as it gets with Epicurean delights. The steaks are aged prime and the seafood cocktail as fresh as an early morning catch. The ambiance of it's coziness is in the Lounge Bar with dim lighting accentuated by a beautiful "nautical themed" Art Deco bar and cozy white leather settees.
I recently spent time here with some friends and we really enjoyed ourselves. I love top shelf establishments, such as this one. Just the respite that I need when away from home or when I'm not in the Big Apple.
A-list approved, this is the place to be!
Excellent food, excellent service, excellent atmosphere. It is beautifully decorated, very modern looking. You get what you pay for here (it is VERY pricey), but everything we had here was just excellent. The view from our table was gorgeous, overlooking the harbor.
We ordered the cheese appetizer - a lady rolls a large cart of cheeses to the table and explains each cheese in detail. We had the choice of either choosing our own or having her put together a plate for us. They even age some of the cheeses on site (fancy!) I ordered short ribs, which was very tender, and it was served over starchy vegetables which were cooked perfectly. I didnt have room for dessert, but next time I come, I would love to try one.
I would recommend this place for a special or romantic occasion. I will definitely come back!
This is a serious surprise among typical in-a-hotel steakhouses. Everything we tried was fantastic from the appetizers to the steaks to the lamb chops to the desserts. The menu is almost cookie cutter, looking like any steak house, but the execution is unique and the results are totally delicious. It is expensive but not out of line with anything in the DC area. At least you'll have a wonderful time with great good. Highly, highly recommend this place.
I whole-heartedly agree with the previous poster. I recently stayed at the hotel with my husband. (Please see my review of the hotel too.) We were there for his technology conference.
Our dinner at Old Hickory was the highlight of the visit. Talk about an amazing dinner! The restaurant is stunning. Ask for a table in the "Riverview Room." If you are there during the right time, you will be delighted to watch the breathtaking sunset over the Potomac River. It was so romantic!
The food is an epicurean delight. My steak - a grass-fed prime tenderloin - was so tender I cut it with a butter knife. My husband had the NY strip. He raved about how good it was from start to finish. Try the truffled fries and roasted asparagus as your side dishes - they are heavenly! So is the cheese course. I couldn't believe that the cheese expert wheels her little cart right next to your table and gives you a full tour of these amazing cheeses from around the world. They are not just any cheese, but "artisanal" cheeses. The presentation is entertaining, educational and tantalizing all at the same time.
The service was outstanding as well. My server was gentleman from New York who knew the menu backwards and forwards. He explained everything in such great detail and pleasantly took the time to answer all our questions. He was there when we needed him to be, and yet, did not "hover" like some fine restaurant servers do.
I'm giving this place 5 stars because it deserves it!!!
I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for something special.
