27 reviews for Old Glory Barbershop and Tattoo
Not only did I get the haircut and highlights just like I wanted, but by taking my friend K's recommendation for Chuck, I spent the most intellectually stimulating three and a half hours I have ever spent in a hair salon. Yes he's chatty but it's a good thing!
The hip Indian girl (I vaguely recall hearing her being called Nita but I could be way off base here) was also a contributor to my awesome cut so thanks to both of them :0] Definitely recommending this place to my future couchsurfers - they could always use a friendly and awesomely cool walk-in barber shop that's not a lame sell-out chain
Been there twice and will be going back. My hair is really hard to cut, it's like a china-man's hair, grows straight out from my head and does not lay down. Job well done anonymous barber guy.
Free Red Stripe beer and Tequila and a four star hair cut.
I called ahead and they "put me down", but I arrived and had to wait a few mins.
This place is dope. I just moved to Santa Monica and needed a local place for a quick haircut. Nothing fancy just don't make me look like more of a dork than I already am. First time I went I got Sarah and she was great. I booked a 2nd cut with her a few months later and she flaked on the appointment... not worries... as another guy stepped up to take her place. (I can't remember his name but he was cool, funny and did a good job. He even offered me a shot of tequila when he was done (It was a Friday afternoon after all)
This place is ALL Venice... what you see is what you get and what you get is down home, local and solid.
I have been going to this place since in or around 2006 after I had found great reviews of it on http://citysearch.com, and let me tell you I would not go anywhere else. All the stylists are absolutely fabulous, Chuck, Jason, this hip Indian girl. It really is more than just a barbershop. If you are a lady, do not be intimidated getting your haircut by some of the tattooed straight guys as they give some of the best cuts. The stylists are always uber cool and friendly. It is under remodeling, but from what I have been told they are looking to make it into a hangout/tattoo/styling place where you can have yourself a beer while you get your haircut. Plus, the prices are great at $40 for long and $25 for short. Cannot recommend more.

I have been going here for a few years now. I have only had a haircut here by three different… Read more »
My boyfriend gets his hair cut here. We found the place thanks to yelp. he'd had a couple of terrible experiences, and Sarah at Old Glory saved him from coming home looking like a 5th grade dork from the short bus. THANKS SARAH, YOU'RE EXPERTISE IS UNPARALLELED.
Great haircut and the best prices!!!
I've been going to Jason for about 4 years - the guy knows how to cut hair. This place is just a good old school shop. You get an ice cold beer to sip on while you're getting your trim - what could be better???
Kind staff. They gave me beer. Jason cuts my hair and he's great at it. The thing that drew me to this place is that they charge by length of hair, not by gender, and the stylist don't treat me like a freak since I'm a female who likes to get boy cuts. Why should I pay more simply because I'm a girl? Great place with an open mind.
I love this place. It somehow exists in Los Angeles - when it really should be in Providence or Portland. It's cool enough to be taken over by annoying hipsters, but somehow hasn't been. It's a miracle.
Go to Sarah, she is reasonable ($40 for a women's haircut!!) and totally totally rad. You cannot get a better haircut for $40, I'd bet my one year old on it. She cuts both my and my husband's hair, and both of us have been happy for years. But as of now she only works Mondays and Tuesdays, and either get there as they open, or call ahead to see how crowded it is, because they don't take appointments; it's walk-in only and you can end up waiting a bit if you're not careful.
I found my spot.
I'm seriously a picky bastard when it comes to my hair. It's on the longer side and there have been few people who have let me leave their shop happy. This is definitely one of them.
Setting Up an Appointment:
Just a phone call away, it was no hassle, no waiting, and honestly I was in and out in no time at all. This is coming from someone who's hair normally takes 1+ hours.
Environment:
Very laid back, awesome artwork on the walls (ie. Shepard Fairey prints, etc.), good music. If you're into coffee, snacks, massages, and foo foo shit, this is definitely not your scene.
Service:
I got Nandu. She was amazing. Getting your hair cut you've always gotta pay close attention in the mirror to make sure they're not fuckin' up your head too bad... but not with Nandu. I felt comfortable within minutes and trusted every move. She not only took off the perfect amount, as I asked, (as you probably have noticed most hair stylists really don't know the difference between 4 inches and half an inch), but she also did a stellar job of giving my hair the extra texture and layers it needed. She took very very good care of me. Bravo.
Cost:
I've got long hair, so I'm used to paying more than the average guy just lookin' for a buzz cut. It only cost me $30. Well worth it.
Overall:
I was considering Floyd's cause the brand seemed appealing. I'm glad I checked the reviews first, because I've clearly made the right choice going with Old Glory.
The Good: A gem in Venice. It's a tiny little shop with about 3 chairs. Cool vibe and totally friendly people. Very chill, a tad too chill in a way. I walked in and there was nobody at the counter. There was just a clipboard asking you to sign in. No order or numbers next to your name, you just write it down. How would they know who was next? They don't, so why even have it. The stylist that I had was Nandu, she was cool and did a great job on the hair. I wanted something more stylish, but she didn't style it just gave me some ideas...meh.
The Bad: Without Yelp I don't think I would have ever found this place. Good cuts but $30 bucks for a simple cut is a tad high.
The Ben: It's not your LA trendy shop. It's sooo Venice. The do serve beer with your cut.
Where else is a better place to get inked but the legendary VENICE beach??
I came here to get my first tattoo about a year ago. At the time (before I knew of Yelp!), I used the customer reviews from other websites to help me make a decision about where to get inked. My experience was great. I called on a Wednesday and was able to get an appointment for that Saturday. Naturally I was a bit nervous, but Kevin made sure I was completely comfortable the whole time. He even stopped to get me water and a candy bar when I started to feel a little bit dizzy from the adrenaline (note: EAT breakfast before getting a tattoo)! Although I only got a simple tattoo of letters on my wrist, Kevin did an amazing job and the tattoo is flawless. The lettering is detailed and looks like calligraphy. He was extremely helpful in helping me figure out exactly what size I wanted the tattoo and where I should place it. I had brought in a picture of (what I thought was) a similar lettered tattoo, but Kevin was able to point out the amateur quality of the tattoo I had printed out that I would never have noticed myself. He's been doing this for years, and his passion for it shows. He even offered for me to come back anytime for a free touch up. I might be back for my (now would be) THIRD tattoo...they're addicting, watch out!
I got a very nice hair cut here. Cool people, decent vibes. About $30 spent.
The only downside (and it's a big one) is that parking sucks! Or at least it did on the Sunday that I went in... That I aside, I recommend it for a haircut!
This is it!
If you're looking for that perfect barbershop that has competent stylists, a tattoo parlor in the back, Red Stripe for the clients and good music, you've found your place.
I've been going to Sarah for about 4 years now. I followed her from Rudy's @ The Standard. Not only is she good to look at, but she cuts a mean head of hair. Prices are reasonable. A short hair haircut is only $25 bucks. Not sure what she charges for long hair cuts. And they do color.
The ambiance is great, I very rarely have to wait for longer than 1/2 an hour and I come out feeling like a million bucks. Hell, I'm driving from North Hollywood to see Sarah...so you know she's good.
I would say that really the only negative, if you can even call it that, is that parking can sometimes be a bitch. I mean, we live in LA...parking is always a bitch.
Very nice cuts. The guy who cut my hair was very attentive and listened to what I was saying. Complaints are minimal: the stylists talk to their clients a bit much, so the wait can be a lot longer than necessary. And only some of the stylists accept credit cards, so you don't necessarily know if you need cash or not...
If you throw a stick in this town you're bound to hit a lame chain "barbershop" where they'll give you extra attitude with a crappy over-priced haircut. They might even make you wait a long time for the privilege. (e.g. Rudy's).
Thankfully there's Old Glory. It's independent, local and gives great haircut.
I've been going to Sarah for a few years and she's always done me right. Whether it's short cuts or long ones she knows what she's doing. Good cuts. Friendly people. No bull.
Old Glory = go.
Kevin runs the tattoo part and is a great artist and always open to new ideas. He's currently working on my half-sleeve and is easy to work with, a good dude to talk to, and always flexible with appointments. If you're thinking of getting work done and will be in the area, definitely ring him up. You can find more info and art from him here:

Man, I have never been so disappointed with a barber shop before. Not only did I have to pay $10.00 to park, but I had to pay $30.00 for a haircut that was the complete opposite of what I asked Nandu to provide. I asked her to just trim my long wavy hair, to which Nandu claimed she was a long hair expert and not to worry. Every time I told her she was taking too much off, I got the same damn answer, do not worry, I am the expert. When she finally finished cutting and the floor was covered with my hair, she had the balls (really lied) to tell me she hardly cut any hair. Definitely would not go back and question all those reviews that now sound like they were written by Old Barber Shop owners and employees. And as far as the beer deal, you need to ask, I sure as the hell was not offered a Red Stripe. Sam's can do the same for much less and with more integrity.
What can I say, they do a good job on my hair and for only $25. What, you say Rudy's is $19? *clears throat*
Well, that's because IT'S A CHAIN. You might as well be going to Supercuts. And Rudy's doesn't serve Red Stripe. HOORAY BEER!
n.b. they do women's hair well too and they seem to be blowing up on the tattoo side of the biz as well. I can't believe i just posted a review for where I get my hair cut. I need a drink.
Very cool shop; catering to a very hip demograph.
Brian Ewing framed art on the walls, professionals with sissors and needles.
I'm making plans to get a pinner from Kevin during the week of the 4th of July; just a little piece to say I was there and mark the beginning of a new season of change.
I usually go to Supercuts. But I wanted to try something slightly more classy to see if there's an appreciable difference. So when I needed a haircut, based on what I had read on Yelp, I decided to go to Old Glory. I got there before they opened on Saturday morning, so I was the first customer of the day.
As a barber by the name of Chuck was cutting my hair, I pondered whether it was a good or bad thing to come in first thing in the morning. I mean, maybe the barbers should warm up, or loosen up a bit before touching my hair.
But it worked out well. I'm happy with the haircut. Chuck was fast and cheerful, and the price was decent. Still not sure if it's worth the extra ten bucks over Supercuts if you're getting a basic haircut, but I haven't any complaints.
quick and painless, consistently great haircuts. come in the morning to mid-afternoon and you'll be in-and-out in half an hour.
sara gives a wicked cut!
this place is so much cheaper than all the salons that are popping up on Abbot Kinney (for a man's haircut)...
Rock n' Roll.
Sweet. Got a beard trim in here today. They offered me a beer! I would have had one, but I was riding my moto. Good prices, nice, friendly staff, great job on my beard trim.
review is for kevin.....
i was recommened by a friend who knows the owner of the shop and had discussed getting some work done with kevin. alas, he wanted some hybrid tribal/japanese/grafitti stuff and decieded on another artist, but told me that 'this guy does exactly what you love', old school, traditional, sailor jerry type ish.
so when i was researching who i wanted to go to for my 2nd tatt, i took a look at his stuff. looked good, he had good reviews, and came recommended by someone who's artistic opinon i value alot.
i emailed him ideas of what i was looking to do. he told me to phone him up. from the first conversation it was very comfortable, he was stoked on what i wanted and said he could sketch something up and email it over, before end of day i saw my protoype. i made an appointment, and when i arrived he was very personable, and down to earth. we personalized my piece, went over size, and placement. he really stressed making sure i was happy "because this is forever". rock on!
he's a solid guy, great artist and witty to boot! i had so much fun just sitting and talking with him while being drilled with a needle for like 2 hours. i'm so EFFIN happy with my piece, and this dood's personality that i'm going back so we can add the other touches that i want.
check him out for sure!
Great, consistent cuts at a fair price. Around 30 bucks and they offer you a rinse afterwards. They've offered me beer a few times but I've always been hungover or on my lunch break when I go here. The only problem is parking because it is so close to Venice beach. Your best bet is to go on weekdays to avoid the excess people.
Jason ROCKS a haircut! This place is so chill! You get a Red Stripe beer while you are waiting and everyone in the shop is/are cool.
a fairly great haircut, great conversation and a cool place ... no long wait .. a decent price and i loved the way they were cool with me parking my bike inside
