Review from Marin G.
The ride here - from just about anywhere - makes this restaurant worth visiting from the get go. As my gracious hosts said, "this is the part of NY that looks like Vermont." And it's beautiful in Vermont.
The restaurant is right next to the ferry in Essex across Lake Champlain to Vermont. One can get here by automobile or pull up in a boat! There is a ton of outdoor seating but our table is best (so when you can for a weekend dinner reservation ask for a table in the corner under the tent.) From here you can get a great view of Vermont, the dock and the ferry. In short, a view of it all!
As I think I noted in previous reviews, yelp could be seriously improved by allowing me to rate restaurants by different criteria for this one would receive 5+ stars for ambiance but not as many for food. Still, everything tastes great (and better) when you are eating lakeside on a cool summer evening. Add to that the friendly and attentive waitstaff who made us feel important and if you're in town you should certainly dine here. I had the fish & chips and they were good. Others had the chicken sandwich and raved. Nice beers on tap too! -

The Old Dock House is located just next to the ferry landing in Essex, NY. With plenty of outdoor seating and a few slips to pull up your boat, it's a great place for the scenery... the food and service are another story.
I've been a few times and the fairly traditional pub/lunch fare is not inexpensive. Few things on the menu are less than $10. Many lunches are $12-15.
I recently ordered the turkey club. It was ok. Half way through the sandwich I realized they never removed the white paper that restaurants use to divide meat portions. Another person in our party asked for the ceasar dressing on the side (they have a tendency to over dress the ceaser) and the salad arrived dressed.
So, bottom line, the service was slow, the food was ok and slightly overpriced, but it was a beautiful day and the setting alone compensates for a lot. I wouldn't make the trip just to go the Old Dock but, Essex, NY is a great little afternoon trip from the Burlington area and the Old Dock is worth trying while you're there. -

Ok, no embellishment in this review; the Old Dock on Lake Champlain is a lot of fun, and, after all, isn't that a lot of the casual dining experience. I've been going there by boat for years; the view of the Green Mountains is unparalleled, and sitting outside, right on the lake, is terrific. The food is as good as you'll get at a casual restaurant and my wife claims the fish and chips are the best anywhere( and she is a " fish and chips pro").
Great bar, good draft beer, world class view and good food...throw in excellent service and you've got a spot you can be guaranteed will please.

Location, location, location. They are in the perfect spot on the lake and on a clear night, with a full moon, it couldn't be beat. Luckily - because we needed something to look at and be positive about as we waited to be served. Our table apparently was not assigned a waitress and I had to ask 3 times before someone took our order and gave us water. Over 1/2 hour after we sat down, we finally got water and then it took a long time for the food to come - but... once we were eating they were suddenly in a rush (to go home?) and took my daughter's plate before she was finished. This restaurant needs some good management.
