i am actually glad this place closed. i would have never gone back anyway. the waitress smelled like b.o., the guacamole on the breakfast burrito was so salty that it had to be scraped off and when i ordered the tofu scramble and got regular scrambled eggs the waitress argued with me and said that i ordered eggs. she wasn't paying attention and i noticed that so i repeated myself and she still messed up and then blamed me. she was just outright rude. my friend once came here, tipped a penny and wrote learn your job on the receipt.  she told me after i told her about my experience there, no wonder they closed.

I'm a grizzled veteran of the eating-out-at-a-restaurant-for-Thanksgiving wars. A rotating cast of friends and I have been going to Thanksgiving dinner at restaurants in NYC for the past few seasons, now.

Usually restaurants don't show their best selves on this particular holiday. Often they seem to serve-up pre-fab, pre-heated turkey and trimmings -- Not much fun.  I'm happy to say, though, that Old Devil Moon was a wonderful exception to the rule (AND only cost $25/person!).

ODM is one of those places that I like a lot, but don't go to often enough. The fare on offer this Thanksgiving reminded me that I should go more often. The Turkey was hot, fresh and tender; the stuffing soft, sage-y and comforting. In tune with their Southern sensibilities, they offered catfish as an alternative to the usual turkey main course (I didn't try it, but heard that it was quite good).

OK, they ran out of cranberry sauce (why, why, why!!??), but the servers were so nice and relaxed it didn't matter. This isn't a huge restaurant, so don't expect to bring a large party here next year, but our group of six was very comfortable.

Little quibbles -- nice but limited wine list was a tad expensive (OK, who goes to Old Devil Moon for an extensive wine list, anyway?). The yams could have been dressed up a bit more with brown sugar...

But all-in-all, I'd go back here any Thanksgiving. They outshone restaurants charging 2 or 3 times as much.

I really liked this place despite the fact that they were out of both brisket and macaroni and cheese. You see this wouldn't have been a biggy if i hadn't ordered the beef brisket with a side of mac&cheese. straight forward booo : (  on the other hand i did enjoy my revised order ( a cheeseburger)  went well with the pabst.
Also my friend had a pulled pork sandwich. i sampled a nibble...quite yummy. good thing it was just a nibble because of the report that came in the next day. apparently my friend suffered some major pulled pork sandwich related sickness ( out the bum.)  Luckily this did not affect me first hand...... though i still consider myself to be a victim.
A victim of deliciousness.
also A+ decor

We looked through Time Out New York's dining guide and this was a recommendation. Since we were craving Southern-style food and happened to be in East Village we decided to go on down.

First of all I like the intimate setting of this place. If a little drafty at times, the quiet, low-ceiling, all-wooden cabin-like decor and one person waiting and hosting the entire restaurant with such friendly and swift mastery is cozy and homely to me.

Secondly there is a pretty decent assortment of beers - the Dead Guy Rogue Ale is what we got, which we haven't seen much outside West Coast. Also there are so many mouthwatering appetizers on the menu it was difficult to select, if any. We got some deviled eggs which were pretty subtle but very tastsy, perfectly cooked.

The mister and I ordered chicken fried steak with collard greens and mashed potatoes, and also the pulled pork with cole slaw and cornbread. Everything was delicious, nothing tasted like it does anywhere else, or not fresh - this place definitely has a unique flare to it. I really enjoyed the crispy, golden, almost cornflake-like crust on the chicken fried steak, which was perfectly seasoned; the delicious and medium-thick gravy and the lightly mashed potatoes which I could tell weren't loaded with fat but fluffy and light. The collard greens, although overpowered by oversmoked hamhock flavor, were cooked very well and had a slight acidic balance to it. The cornbread was seriously probably the best I'd ever tasted - subtly sweet, a little savory, a healthy sized wedge of it served with honey and butter. The slaw, unfortunately, was  vinegar-mustard based, and I do not like that one bit.

Overall I enjoyed my experience here a lot. The teeny stall-sized bathroom aside (it's clean enough), over two beers and a plate each, my boyfriend and I shared a fine evening together in two hours' time. And we would recommend it to anyone. It's not cheap but it's not expensive either. It's a great, quiet date spot for a long dinner where you can chat in an intimate setting over a few beers and large plates of shared bites. (The one waitress/host thing strangely did not make me feel rushed; she is so efficient). I will always remember this restaurant and hopefully return to it on my next visit to New York with my beloved.

Hmmm, I met someone here for brunch and the food wasn't so great.  I had the eggs oaxaca (sp?) and I tasted burnt pieces in my eggs.  Home fries were really good though.

All in all the experience wasn't too pleasant.  Bad food, bad ambience, and bad date.

Was craving some comfort food, and this place was recommended by a friend.  Whilst not the greatest Cajun food around, the atmosphere and experience, plus pretty good food and good service make it a good spot for dinner with friends.  Also, not at all crowded on a Friday night, so - bonus.

Had the catfish salad; was basic, but well-prepared.  My date's ribs were good, a bit on the tough side.  The wine list is limited - I think you're supposed to drink beer.  We're dumb.

Best of all - I've finally found the source of Masturbakers' cakes!  Years and years ago, I received an erotic birthday cake from a friend who said she got it at Masturbakers but I never knew where that was - I think they share a kitchen with Old Devil Moon?  Or it's the same people?  Not sure.  So we got to look at their catalogue of erotic cakes while we waited for dinner.  I remember it being one of the most delicious cakes ever, so we ordered a slice of (non-erotic) cake for dessert - again - amazing, amazing cake.

So it's Saturday, May 3rd, the day of the Kentucky Derby.  My friends and I are watching the event at Johnny Utah's (review coming soon) and as soon as the race is over, our fervor subsides.  We watch the race recap and commentators, listening to every work and sipping our mint juleps.  Then, the shocking announcement is made:  Eight Belles, the second place filly, has been euthanized!  What??  It's disrespectful to say that was a buzz kill.

So, we have to get out of there, out of Johnny Utah's, out of midtown, out of the madness.  We head down to the West Village for a nice dinner.  Lines, crowds, indecision.  (You know how it is when there's a group of three... you can keep walking the length of Manhattan passing up every "possible" restaurant, looking for a better option).

Finally, my friend Andrew says, "Well, we're on 12th Avenue.  We could just take a cab cross town to Old Devil Moon."  Immediately, this sounds comforting.  I mean, we're starving and at least now there's a destination.

So, all of these circumstances color my review.  After an excruciating traffic-laden cross town cab ride, we arrive.  Walking into the small, cozy, warmly (Christmas) lit space, I said "this feels like home."  Did I mention it was raining and any dry space would seem like a hearth?   But I digress.

Andrew is a regular regular at Old Devil Moon, known by all of the very sweet and attentive waitresses.  After ravenously consulting the menu (we were hungry), we ordered the Cajun nachos.

The waitress gets quiet.  She stops writing.  She looks at Andrew.  She looks at us.

Tentatively, she says, "As is?"

I look at Andrew, I look at the waitress, I look at Karen.

"Umm... no?"

She asks Andrew: "Do you eat fish?"

AH!  No, there was no cat fish tampering... she's just THAT in tune with Andrew's palette, likes and dislikes..  She urges him to try new things, though he usually despises creatures with fins, scales or shells alike, and the order is in.

I didn't like the cat fish... whoa!  But most people do.

My order was the pulled pork sandwich with steak fries.  The "fries" were basically a potato cut in fours.  My pork sandwich was actually really good.  Recommended.  Andrew also said that the beef brisket platter is a winner.

Karen got a shrimp po'boy but she didn't seem to rave about it... but we did eat a lot of nachos at this point.

The whole experience was definitely heart-warming.  I enjoyed looking at the kitsch on the walls and the desserts on display (I did try the peanut butter pie - interesting...).  The menu definitely favors down home options, but there are a few surprising choices.  Also, don't you like to say the name:  Old Devil Moon? I know I do.

Perhaps best of all for a Saturday night, there was no line.  Traffic was definitely moving through and things were busy... but not too busy to be a turn off.

So all in all, if you need a place to forget your follies, or fillies (it's still really sad about Eight Belles), Devil Moon is probably the place.  Quality service, a good crowd, (a lot) of comfort food and comfort Christmas lights are sometimes just what you need to forget a stressful day at Midtown's yuppie bronco-busting Johnny Utah's.

The food is just bad. I've been there many times because it's on my block, and every time I promise myself I'll never go again.

The food is disgusting. It's a bad version of "country home cooking".

This place is for kids from Jersey who move into the city and think they're cool because they're hangin' in the E Vil.

Bad food! Bad, bad food!

I'd been here once before and only had the Mac 'n Cheese, but last night was a night of hunger...I had a fever for quasi-soul food and the only cure was Old Devil Moon.

Being a vegetarian, I find that it's rare to get the crispy, breaded deliciousness of down-south cookin' (which, after living for Nashville in a year, is somethng that I grew to appreciate) without the meats. Not the case with Old Devil Moon. While my pal had the ribs, and reported that they were "Oh my god, so fucking good," I had the chicken-fried tofu.

I felt like a hippie even ordering it, and it was a risk, but the waitress assured me that it was good. And she was right. Two big pieces of tofu friend in crispy breading and covered with white gravy. A huge side of mashed potatoes (the kind with those big, yummy chunks of potato and skins and mmm...) and cole slaw, for ten bucks. TEN BUCKS! It's definitely a good place to grab a doggy bag and have dinner and lunch the next day taken care of.

Also nice: they give you a huge piece of cornbread topped with honey as soon as you sit down. If that's not southern hospitality, I don't know what is.

The decor is interesting...a hodgepodge of random things (a stuffed bear head on the wall next to a shelf where an R2D2 figurine sits, for example), and it's super-cozy. The waitress was extremely efficient, attentive, and friendly, despite the fact that she was the only one there...I was impressed.

I've been wondering when I will find that "place" in NY, that place that I take my friends when they come here...and, I think I've found it.

I was pretty surprised when I walked into the door of Old Devil Moon.  It's a really cute spot with funky decor, and seems like a great ambience.  The world famous brunch however was a little disappointing.
Or really particularly the service.
I don't really mind a bad server, I was a server for a long time and I know how it goes.  I know a lot of people say this too, but really you could drop a plate of food in my lap I would not care.  But you at least have to do more than just take my order.  The girl that served us, came by almost every 30 seconds from when we walked in the door to take our order.  Once she had that she was gone... not gone from the restaurant, it was particularly slow, she just ignored us completely.  I feel lucky that I got to pay for my food.

The food however was pretty delicious... I wish there were more vegan options, and that the menu was generally a little easier to read, although I do like the idea behind it.

I definitely want to come back for dinner, but I don't know why they can't make a lot of the basic things listed for that time in a vegan way if they are going to cater to that crowd otherwise, like the mashed potatoes for instance.... pretty disappointing.

Anywho, I would give it another try, but overall pretty disappointing.

Holy little lights!  Old Devil Moon is a cute place--okay, let me explain.  Very eclectic with yes, lots of little Christmas lights in MULTIcolors!  The booths are a bit tight with the couches made out of that glitter vinyl popular in the 70s.  There's a bunch of tables, but the place resembles a run down western bar/joint which you've seen in a movie at some point in your life.  And there's some beautiful taxidermy on display for your admiration (I'm being sarcastic as I'm a vegetarian.)  There's also a bunch of tschotkes all over--beer bottles, license plates...lots of stuff.

(I do have to say that I was rather involved with the person sitting across from me so I realllly couldn't give ODM my fullest attention so I may have missed a few details. ;) )

The food was great!  As a vegetarian, I was very excited at the options available!  I never had jambalaya before--it's typically made with meat!  It was pretty tasty and reminded me a bit of Mexican food with tomato sauce soaked rice with chopped vegetables.  They also served the dish with a side salad which was fantastic--it was the dressing that did it.

I can't even tell you what my date had--I apologize--but he did love it.

I wouldn't call ODM handicapped accessible.  The door is a bit small and forget the restroom--airplane sized.

What I wore to Old Devil Moon: sweater, corduroys, and motorcycle boots--it's a joint.

On a recent trip to NYC we just happened to stop into Old Devil Moon.  Fun, funky and eclectic.  I couldn' t help but be jazzed when the first song I heard after sitting down was Beastie Boy's Intergalactic.

We started, of course, with cocktails.  I had a mango champagne cocktail, but very honestly, I recommend sticking with the beer.  A stellar array of beer on their menu.  Two of us had the burgers and I have to say they might have been some of the juiciest I've ever had. The side of slaw was terrific and the mashed chipotle potatoes, okay.

I would give this place four stars but the service was slow and my friend's eggs were just okay.  Next time though I will have to try the biscuits and gravy - looked spectacular.

Yum, yum, and more yum is to be had at Old Devil Moon.

This is an awesome joint with a lot of vegetarian takes on soul food, in addition to the usual meaty options. The brunch is particularly good - though be prepared to wait for a table. Huge portions with lots of flavor make this place one of my East Village favorites.

Fantastic!  I tried the ribs and they are REALLY good.  The slaw that it was served with was very good and vinegary.  The mac & cheese is awful, don't get it - even if you like mac & cheese out of the box.  But the corn on the cob was excellent and it was such a pleasure to see mashed potatoes drowning in cream gravy.

Everyone enjoyed their meal and the fact that they serve Lone Star...but being from TX, it's unconscionable to spend $4 on Lone Star except MAYBE if it's a tall boy.  So we had $4 Stellas instead.

I can't wait to go back for brunch!

Why do people think that every 'Southern' restaurant has to have walls full of wacky flea market shit ?  It looks like a fucking Salvation Army circa. 1957 exploded in this place.  Everybody, even displaced Southerners, think that their Southern inspired joint has to evoke some zany, unpredictable mindset in order to seem authentic.  You know what?  Just make some good fucking food and you've got it nailed.  Old Devil Moon doesn't do that.  I had some super sub-par catfish (yes, I realize my prefixes are a conflicting there) and some dry ass rice side dish for an early dinner once.  The best thing about the meal was the cold PBR.  Also, can ya'll please stop making sweet cornbread??  Cornbread is NOT supposed to be sweet.  Jesus.  Anyway, go here if you like crazy shit all up on the walls and cold PBRs.  Other than that:  Go to Sylvia's.

Went for breakfast on a Sunday at about 1PM with two friends.  No wait!  We were seated immediately by a friendly tattooed waitress (most of the patrons, actually, seemed to be tattoo enthusiasts) in a cute sparkly vinyl booth.  The decor catches your eye immediately, the walls covered in kitschy art, old timey travel souvenirs and other randomness.

The menu is comfort food, southern food.  Breakfast entrees are about $9 on average, an endless cup of coffee is $2.  We had the fritatta (amazing) and biscuits and gravy (more amazing).  Does anyone else realize how hard it is to find biscuits and gravy in NYC?

Service was quick, flavors and prices were spot-on.  All in all, I predict we will go back, many times, especially any day between 5 and 7 PM when we hear you can get fried catfish, a PBR and a slice of peanut butter pie for $10.  Hmm, maybe we'll go today!

R.I.P. Old Devil Moon. It was my dream to get a job here and grow old serving pie and listening to van morrison

Every time I stepped into Old Devil Moon, I felt at home. Perhaps it was the delicious catfish and rice, the complimentary sweet sweet cornbread, or the sparse but fitting beer selection... Lonestar, PBR, Original Sin Cider. Or maybe it was the delightfully tacky and comforting interior. To find such an uncrowded, warm, dimly lit hole of homestyle cooking, Christmas lights, vinyl booths, and always a perfect playlist  so near my apartment seemed a rare thing in New York City. I will truly always miss this place.

Even though I'm a southerner and know my gumbo, I can safely say that anyone who isn't a cajun buff would agree that the gumpo served here is not so good. The mixture was just watery, and the seafood was just...fishy. They also had an interesting chicken-fried tofu, which is clearly not even close to real southern food. However, the 3-side platter is worth getting. Priced at $11, it's filling and pretty tasty! I recommend the collard greens, mashed potatoes, and corn bread. It may be drenched in honey and is not your typical salty cornbread, but it is still delicious. You won't even need dessert. Last but not least, good dark $4 beers!

For brunch, i would rate it as average. PROS: friendly/pretty good service, food you can rely on, more than satisfying portions, regular crowd, good music CONS: The white wine pitcher of Sangria is WEAK and you feel like a big fat pig after your huge filling meal. this place  i always leave wanting to roll over and go back to sleep. I would recommend this place though. Because i came here once for dinner, and the catfish was absolutely delicious. Worthwhile inexpensive dinner.

My personal definition of sacrilege was the scene from the Soprano's when Bobby 'Bacala' Baccalieri was assassinated in the train shop while enjoying his hobby and mine, miniature trains. Of all the ways for a character to get whacked, getting it while gently rubbing the caboose of a Kato SD40-2, is a fate 'Bacala' didn't deserve. What he did deserve was a heaping helping of Old Devil Moons French Toast. Any place that has a brunch as delicious as this and a replica train set running about the room is a place made for true brunch and toy train aficionados. I still managed to watch that totally anti-climactic final episode of the Soprano's but I wish I had just gone to ODM, ordered the French Toast with a side of cheese grits and watched that beautiful train go around and around and around...

True southern BBQ in da city! Rock! It's not the heavy molasses-based sauce of carpetbagger barbecue; this is the real deal. While it's not my personal favorite (Carolina-style), it's as authentic as it gets. And good beer selection to boot. Double "word" score.

What a surprise! I literally was draaaaagggged here by a friend that swears about their short ribs! I played it safely and had the grilled chicken that was served with rice and beans and a side salad. It was all good but especially the rice and beans. It kind of was like a bean slaw over rice as the beans had bits of carrot, celery, corn, onion, and what I think was, tiny pieces of string bean. Whatever! It was among the best beans and rice I have had in NYC! The dish was $13. My friend had the $14 short ribs platter and he gobbled them down. Neither of us liked his tasteless side of Mac and Cheese. When you order, they bring you a small plate of tasty cornbread infused with honey. The place was typical East Village scene. Our waitress had a gazillion tattoos and she was super cool and efficient. Small dessert list although today when I was telling my roommate's girlfriend about where I went for dinner last night, she said that the desserts here are excellent! She went on and on about the brunch at Old devil Moon! I will be back to try the brunch and will get a dessert to go!!!

i really wanted to like this place SO MUCH because the atmosphere was incredible and the menu was so promising, but unfortunately i was unimpressed by my food (the "chicken fried" tofu, mac & cheese, and the johnnycakes). however, my meat-eating dining partners were stoked about their ribs & sloppy joe...so there you have it. this place reminds me of the front porch in san francisco decor-wise. and they have pitchers!

not your standard fare for brunch. when i'm in the mood for something a little down home and different, i come here. the egg frittata is a gratifying concoction of eggs and vegetables, and my backup, the huevos oaxaca, is a flavorful mexican-infused meal. several varieties of hot sauce available, which is always a bonus in my book, and the biscuits with the delicious jams on the table are reason enought to give this place a try. unfortunately, the coffee is sub-par, even for ny, and i'd steer clear of the homemade pork sausage.

This place is very "homey" and is great for vegetarians although they also have meat dishes. I am not a vegetarian, but at this place I prefer the chicken fried tofu to the chicken fried steak. Everything I've tried at this place is good. I highly recommend going on Thursday nights when they have live music!

This place has an amazing selection of vegetarian southern food, which I didn't even know existed until now. Steer clear of the vegetarian gumbo though; it was just spicy, watery vegetable soup. The barbeque is fantastic and they have a great selection of beer. Service is slow, so get ready to stay for a while.
