It had good food and good people running it.
on a side note- Jim U. should get out more.
The quality of the business, food, and workers is top notch. But, there's just something weird about this place. Maybe it's the new basic Italian menu in addition to the Balkan stuff. Maybe it's the hairy chested naked men staring at me. Or was that a movie I saw?
The coffee is very good and comes with a piece of creamy chocolate. I second that the burek and yogurt are very delicious and worth traveling here for. As far as "deep, deep Brooklyn" have you ever looked at a map? Dead center of Brooklyn, a five minute walk from south prospect park.
Great place in deep, deep Brooklyn -- I didn't know there was a Church Avenue. I came here on the word that I could find good Balkan food here, and I was not disappointed.
I started off with a meat burek and a side of fresh yogurt. The burek was very good with nicely seasoned ground beef and chewy phyllo dough. The yogurt was just okay for me. It was definitely fresh, but I would have preferred it to be sweet. For the entree I had their bean soup. I think they spelled it fasule which is linguistically (and culinarily) pretty close to pasta e fagioli. I loved this. The beans were perfectly prepared, and the warmth and spice of the broth was just great. It came also with a side cucumber salad which was just okay for me. Finally, I was offered complimentary dessert, baklava. A nice gesture indeed, and this was well done too. No alcohol is available so I had herbal tea instead which complemented everything pretty well.
Service was very good and the ambience is very laid-back. The only serious gripe though is that there is ongoing construction here. So I heard power saws quite a bit while I was there and could smell sawdust at times. But the food was good enough to keep everything at 4 stars, so hey.
I never ate these types of food before - I like them! I also like that the waitresses are attentive and patient with those of us who need some of the menu items explained. I've eaten here three times now and enjoyed it every time.
The music was loud, but it was lowered when requested.
scene I. walking down the squalid gritty grey gum pockmarked sidewalks of church avenue propelled by thoughts of burek and a macchiato to perk up my sodden wilted being, my son says," how much further, when are we going to get there already?"
scene II.
budgetary constraints due to chupacabra atms made me look for credit card logo. none to be seen. we enter a bit cautiously ready for...
wait, this can't be church avenue in kensington! this must be some ALTERNATE UNIVERSE church avenue!
scene III.
we have been transported, as if by magic to a cosy lovely little nook, so rose colored glassesness that i could have sworn there was a fire place with a fire dancing merrily.
they don't accept credit cards alas. my son comes to the rescue though with change he" forgot" to give his tired old parents, thus we proceed to order.
burek cheese for me, meat for the lad. these were very good! think of a many layered scallion pancake sans scallion, with cheese, meat or spinach. you can also order homemade yogurt to have with the burek, and the yogurt is tangy goodness.
the macchiato hit the spot indeed.
they offer a decent variety of italian, balkan and mediterranean cuisine including salads, a number of grilled dishes (cevapi veal kabobs, chicken, veal and beef sausages) veal goulash, pasulj (beans and beef stew) stuffed peppers and what i want to try, whole grilled trout!
they have no liquor license as mentioned by r.w., still for the food and lovely ambiente in a gastronomically challenged area, they deserve the 5 stars no ifs ands or buts about it.
Fantastic place -- the owners run the cafe, complete with old world charm meets brooklyn melting pot. Sit and sit an espresso and watch the local eastern european powers in NYC discuss the future Sopranos style. Great Bureks -- essentially the best savory pastry you'll ever have. Their coffee is great. The owners are a fantastic trip, and worth every cent of the great prices.
Liquor license would make complete.
