I've never been to a nursery before, so I may sound a little naive. After a few weeks of contemplating, I decided to plant herbs. In my world, it was a big decision and a rather blind one because I know NOTHING about plants. I caught a glimpse of the nursery while driving and made a U-turn to check it out. The parking spaces were very limited but fortunately there was one available. The girl who worked there was very helpful and extremely patient. Sure I could have gotten some plants cheaper at Home Depot but I would have been completely lost as to what kind of herbs to get. I ended up with lemon thyme, parsley, and peppermint (My god, I love peppermint!). They had a good variety of everything I could possibly think of. The organic soil they sold smelled beautiful, like fresh earth. I will definitely go back again for advice and if I need anything else (aka if i kill the herbs).

My 1st review-- so pardon any fauxpas...
Buying local counts a lot for me-- about as much as supporting local small businesses when I can. The fact that I can ride my bike there counts for a lot... and the fact that the people who work there appreciate thos efforts counts for even more. Good tools & solutions here for making a start on a garden.
Very limitted selection. They had about 80% of their seed shelves empty when I was there. So if you're going for a specific plant- you may not get it, but if your open to a general sense of what's around & available, it's good.
For the "hardware" you need, Home Depot & OSH will beat this little store any day of the week. (They didn't have fishing line or string for training climbers-- something the warehouses will definately have... if you can find it & have the time to look). But for the subtle gardening necessities (Things like soil additives- earthworm casings, specific pest control suggestions, etc.), this place is more likely to have it, know what it is and/or be able to help you find it if they don't carry it.
My recommendation: GO HERE FIRST if you live in Santa Clara, then tackle the big warehouses to fill-in the blanks of what you couldn't find. You'll save time, have a higher quality of what you get (The 4" pots are healthy & heartier than the sickly over-watered things we got from Home Depot & have fought off our invasion of snails & slugs as only healthy, happy plants can), and you may learn a bit in the process! :)
