This place was suggested to my friends and i because they said that one of the people who worked at Mama's Fish House(a pretty expensive dinner spot in Maui) left from there and started up this place.
It is a little more expensive as far as plate lunches are concerned, but at the same time, your traditional plate lunch spot doesn't serve Ono, or some of the other items they have on their menu. Plus, the servings are pretty huge. I don't think any of us were able to finish our meals. Even the ones that shared were nice and full.
The flavor here is definitely better than any other plate lunch place you'll visit on this island.
Locale - the place is in a plaza, so parking isn't really a problem; it's eating with a big group. There isn't much space there, so your best bet is to take it out somewhere and go eat at the park or the beach. There are a few tables outside and a small counter inside, but that's all as far as seating space is concerned.
Service - When they get jam-packed, like they did one of the times we were there, the lady at the counter can get a little pissy, but you just order and that's it, so there isn't much to be expected on the side of service.
Overall, it's a little more expensive than the traditional plate-lunch, but it won't break your budget, and it's totally worth it!
I had read all the great reviews on here and when one of my local friends asked me where I wanted to eat and I mentioned this place, she said the food is pretty good.
So a bunch of us came for lunch one day and the first thing I noticed was that the prices are very steep! For plate lunches, it was actually twice what you would normally pay in an area where locals reside. Another local friend of our's said he wouldn't pay $15 bucks for a plate lunch, which I totally agree with. When we lived on Oahu, plate lunches such as these would go for anywhere from $6-$7, maximum $8. Here, most items were around the $15 marker, give or take a couple of bucks.
We settled on hamburger steak, teriyaki steak and the lemon caper mahi mahi. The kids got some sandwich thing. I only tried the fries from the kids' plate, which were really good -- seasoned and very tasty.
I'm really glad that everything was fantastic! The hamburger steak had bits of green in it -- don't know what it was, but it certainly enhanced the flavor -- and it was smothered in a mushroom gravy. I liked this immensely.
Teriyaki steak, something I really am not a huge fan of, was also very good. The steak was so tender (they use rib eye) and the sauce was just right -- not overly sweet or overly salty.
Lemon caper mahi mahi was the all time favorite. Cooked to perfection, the fish was flaky, not dry and the sauce accompanied it perfectly.
Sides included mac and potato salad or stir fried veggies, both were above average. Portions were normal sized -- not your regular ginormous Hawaiian portions. I could finish a portion on my own -- unlike other plate lunch places where I'd either have leftovers or have to share with someone.
I think the food was awesome, can't fault them on that at all. Everything we had was absolutely delicious! However, the prices were a little more difficult to swallow since I know it doesn't cost THAT much for plate lunches, but since they are located in Lahaina, in prime tourist town, I guess they can get away with it. Personally, I'd drive a little further and get more for my money in Kahului, but for convenience, Honokowai suffices in keeping the belly happy.
3.5 stars -- but only because of the price
Came here because it was just across and down the street from where we were staying. Small little deli with very limited bar table seating. There is a large flat screen TV on the wall literally in your face, I think the TV was there more for the staff than the customers.
Ordering was pretty simple because I just asked what was the popular dish and he gave me a list of what people enjoyed here. I ended up ordering the mahi mahi with lemon capers!! It had a mushroom sauce on top. It was a large serving of fish and it came with rice and mac salad.
The fish was great and the sauce was yum. The mac salad was a bit too mayonaise-y for me, but thats just my opinion. My meal was about $14, for a large portion of mahi mahi. If I were to come back here, I would definitely order in first and then come pick up and take it back to eat at the condo or even better a nice little picnic on the beach! They also have a pretty extensive menu, I was impressed.

(2) chicken katsu don rice bowls = $23 but was lunch and dinner for two days, yummy. 4 stars: nice variety on the menu ( (also check their board for the daily specials), conveniently located and open late.
MAUI TRIP #2:: 09/4/2009
The last time we were in Maui we ate at Aloha Mixed Plate as well as Nagasako Okazu-Ya Deli in Lahaina. We wanted to try something different, so we yelped "plate lunches" and ended up at Okazuya. We took our plate lunches to Ka'anapali beach. I ordered the Chicken Katzu and the Teri Chicken for the fiance.
Out of the three places to get plate lunches in Lahaina I would rate Aloha Mixed Plate as #1 for the ambience and the happy hour specials, Okazuya #2 for the flavors, and lastly #3 Nagasako Deli because it was a little more of a "whole in the wall" take out place.
PROS (Okazuya Deli)
*Food was fairly priced with good portions ($25 for 2 plate lunches and a side of Cole Slaw)
* Located about 5 minutes from Ka'anapali Beach.
CONS:
* I always have cravings when I see Cole Slaw on the menu. This side order was about $4.50 and I will probably never fulfill my coleslaw cravings here again.
* It took my friends 30 minutes to get their orders. I think they screwed up on the order of the menus.
During our Maui vacation, we ate here twice. The first time I had the Hamburger Steaak ($9.95) and thought it was just OK. The beef patty wasn't that tender and the mushroom sauce was a bit too salty for me. The stir-fry veggies are very good though. That first meal I give 3 stars.
The second time we took out from Okazuya I order the Teriyaki Chicken ($9.95) which was much better. I give this meal 4 stars. The restaurant does a tremendous take-out business. The plate dinner comes with a healthy scoop of steamed rice and either stir-fry veggies or mac salad. (The Teriyaki Steak is also very good. It costs $11.50 for 6oz).
Prices are on the higher side for Maui. Not much seating inside and a couple of tables outside.
CASH ONLY!
Practice Aloha!

Ate here twice while I was in Maui about 2 weeks ago. First time, I had the hamburger steak topped… Read more »
Was back here recently and tried four more dishes (which was split between three of us): panko mahi mahi, chicken katsu, steak teriyaki, lemon caper and sun dried tomato ono/wahoo. All of it was delicious! The ono was something they could probably serve at a high-end restaurant and charge you $50 for. In this case, it was roughly $40 less ;)
It is kinda pricey, but what on Maui isn't?

Right across the street from Papakea - HIGHLY recommended (I wrote a Yelp review on that place, btw,… Read more »
This place is great. We ate here several times while in Maui and everything was fantastic. The Mahi Mahi here is so good and very reasonably prices. The portions are insane. The stir fry veggies were amazing and my boyfriend kept raving about his katsudon.
This place was one of the better food options we found while on Maui.
Another one of my Maui favorites! We come here every time we're in Maui. My last trip was actually the first time I visited the store - usually my parents just come back with the take out. Yes I'm spoiled :) It's a super tiny store and there isn't much room to eat in, so take out is pretty much your only option.
This time I had the chicken katsu - super crispy and it wasn't paper thin unlike some places I've had it. I also had a few bites of the teriyaki chicken and mongolian beef (i think), both were excellent. The beef was really spicy and the rice that came with everyone's dish was nice and sticky.
Portions are huge and prices are good - a must visit when you're in Maui!
After trying so much rare/raw fish in the island we decided to come here for a great plate of fried Mahi Mahi. Another hole in the wall that has delicious food but not recommended for their dining area.
Bottom line for us was the food not the ambiance.
Ok. Usually I'm not the picky sort and do not understand why a restaurant receives bad reviews. This is a situation where I was very underwhelmed by a restaurant that has received very high reviews. This place was way, way overpriced for the food. I don't expect gourmet food for a plate lunch. In fact, we were deliberately looking for a plate lunch place. I've had equivalent plate lunches for less than half the price at L+L Hawaiian BBQ. The food was ok, but it wasn't great. And for the price we paid, I expected a lot more. The sad thing is we chose this place over the highly reviewed fish place located in the same strip mall, which had cheaper prices! Maybe that place was overrated too....
Save your money. Not worth it.
This place rocks!
Once again, everything we ordered was piping hot, made quickly with love. Now you can tell when it's made with love cuz the guys on the line are happy and joking as they cook. No bitter line cooks here! The aloha is free flowing.
Mahalo to the staff, whom makes everyone feel like kama' aina! We will be back at least 2 more times this visit.

This place is really freaking good! We always stay across the way from here and make our first stop… Read more »
I occasionally suffer from a deer in headlights type response when asked what I want. Recently this has begun to occur at restaurants. This has led me to either stare dumbly at the waiter/waitress until Pete tells him/her to give us a few minutes and then promptly slaps me, or I freeze, get anxious, and when I regain my ability to speak, pick the first thing I see on the menu. Since the list of foods I like is much shorter than the list of things I hate, this is usually a bad thing.
After waiting in an insanely long line at Honokowai, I had several selections in my mind before the cashier asked me what I wanted. As soon as she asked, I went blank and stared at the menu behind her...and picked a cheeseburger. BAD, BAD IDEA.
After a very long wait for our food, we received our meals in Styrofoam containers, and set out across the street. Your best best here is taking the food to go. It was crowded and there were minimal seats. You can try to snag a spot outside, but then you might have lots of people watching you eat as they wait for their food and the line snakes out the door. (I may or may not have made several people uncomfortable as I stared at them and drooled while they ate.) We took our food across the street to the Honokowai Beach and ate at one of the picnic tables on the grassy area in the shade. It was nice, but windy. Windy enough to send me running after a napkin (I don't litter folks) and windy enough to blow my skirt up while I ran (always the lady).
After catching said napkin, I sat down to enjoy my burger. I figured I had been safe with my order (nothing on it or in it that I hate). However, it was practically inedible. The burger was flavorless, dry, and rather gross. The meat had that scary color that makes you question whether it was either frozen for a long time or sat out on the counter for too long. Either way: yuck.
That being said, if you are smart enough NOT to order a burger here, you will likely be one happy camper. Pete loved his fish and chips and managed to devour the huge portion, Keith refused to share his chow fun even though he saw me staring at it longingly, and even Noelle's vegetarian meal made this meat lover drool.
Bottom line: go here for lunch if you are patient and don't mind a long line and possibly a long wait. Just don't be the idiot who orders the burger when there are clearly so many great items on the menu. Have an order in your mind BEFORE you reach the counter, so you won't repeat my dumb decision.
Reasonably good with okay prices for Maui.
Nice and quick service.
Cash only but do have an ATM.
Plates will cost you around $12/person. CASH ONLY!!!
Teriyaki steak was YUMMY and SO tender. It comes in 2 sizes, but you'll like it so much, you might as well order the larger portion. We came here twice, and I liked it so much that I ordered this dish both times.
Hamburger steak is basically loco moco without the egg. Their gravy is DEEELICIOUS!
Not much seating here, just a small counter with maybe 12 seats available. Outdoor seating is very limited, maybe 3 tables out there that can seat 2 or 3 people at each table.
DOES NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS.
Neat little mixed plate place with Asian flair. Ordered the eggplant schezuan and the grandma's tofu...the tofu was SPICY the eggplant was carmelized. Delicious. Their turtle brownie is delicious but split it with a friend or two!
Counter seating inside w/ A/C or grab a spot outside in the 2-3 tables/chairs.
Looking for a great lunch on Maui that won't set you back $80?
Honokowai Okazuya is the place to get it.
This is a tiny little hole-in-the-wall deli that mostly does take out. The portions are huge, incredibly fresh and flavorful, and run around $10-15 apiece. Ours lasted us several days.
Great eats for the beach or for your condo.
We tried the lemon caper ono (the most popular dish) today. I gave it a 4 star rating because of:
1. freshness of fish
2. portion size
The restaurant is small and the seating is limited but that didn't stop many customers from coming to the establishment.
** Note the restaurant is in the same area of the Maui fish market. ***
I randomly happened on this place looking for lunch, then consulted Yelp (hey this is Maui, we do things at our own pace). Yelpers confirmed my taste buds: damn good eats!
We got the Ono with Lemon Capers for myself, and the Black Bean Beef Chow Fun for my wife. It set our already abused bank account back about another $30. But the portions were huge (leftovers for tomorrow).
Fish was fresh, although a tad bit overcooked. The lemon caper sauce had sauteed mushrooms and sundried tomatoes which was delicious with the fish and over the side of rice (included). Chow Fun noodles and black bean beef were delicious.
We have another 6 days of vacation, I'm guessing we'll be back once we finish our leftovers!
My mouth is watering reminiscing about the Mahi Mahi plate... sitting on the beach, enjoying the beautiful Maui weather. Mmhm!
This place was right down the street from the condo we rented and we made it over for lunch a few times. Awesome food- big selection and relatively cheap. I enjoyed their food much more than a number of over-priced, tourist trap places in Lahaina.
Highly suggest the Mahi Mahi lemon caper plate. This will be our go-to place straight off the plane for future visits. Mahalo :)
Portions are sizable and the food is pretty good. We got the katsu and it was delicious. It was a better experience than the aloha mixed plate.
The food was disgusting. My hubby n I had two takeout items, cost is $30. Do not waste your money here. I am from la so I am not sure if the standards are diferenr here. Maui's food sucks!
I got there around 6:30pm to do some take out for dinner. I was surprised to find that this little place in a strip mall was packed with customers and had a half dozen people standing outside, waiting for their orders too.
I ordered a combo of chicken katsu and BBQ chicken. The grub was ready in about 10 minutes. The chicken katsu reminded me of the one my mom makes. And, the BBQ chicken (I thought) tasted better than the shoyu chicken at Aloha Mixed plate. I can now understand why this place had so many people waiting around. The food was awesome!
A trip to Maui in search of a plate lunch would not be complete without a trip to this place!
The undisputed numero-uno, knockout quality plate lunch spot in Hawaii. This place was my first plate lunch experience in the Islands and it spoiled me from the get go. All the others have pretty much paled in comparison...I dont know what it is, but it's the best.
Mahi, Lemon caper ono, teriyaki steak...all great!
On second thought...don't go there. I don't want it changing.
YUMMMMM!
I have been here several times both times I've been in Maui now and the food is so wonderful and so reliable that it keeps me coming back here.
I'm in love with the mahi mahi and the ono in the lemon caper white wine sauce. It's just fabulous! It's also so much food that you will have left overs for lunch the next day! This time, my boyfriend got the kung pao chicken which we both really enjoyed as well.
For the price, it's really a great bargain for such quality, delicious food. If you're staying in a condo locally, call ahead so that you don't have to wait on the long line that gathers. Also, this is a cash only restaurant so make sure you have your cash ready!
A very good local spot to grab a bite to eat for lunch or dinner.
Everything on the menu is good. I'm not lying. I have had something different each visit and have been very satisfied with each dish. The portions are large and most of the dishes can be split in two. The BF is a big fan of the mac-salad.
This place was good and had a wide variety of choices.
The prices were about the norm for Maui.
I got the Lemon Caper Ono and it was good. The Mac Salad wasn't as good as I had hoped. I paid extra for the double scoop! Oops. I think i'm used to L & L. My husband got the Teriyaki something.
We ate some in the car and the rest our on out "lanai" with a couple of Coronas. Fun times.
I don't know if I'll be back.
Tired after a long drive all over the Maui island, we decided to find something that's low key and available for take out. We dropped by Okazuya around 8:30pm (they stop taking orders at 8:45pm) for a late dinner.
The place was easy to find as someone mentioned it was in a small strip mall. It's a tiny place where the kitchen / grill is right in front of you. The cashier (she might be the owner) was very nice. We ordered the Korean BBQ Chicken Combo and the Terikayi Steak Combo, total came to about $24. The combo comes with rice, mac salad or stir fry vegetables.
Since we ordered as take-out, we sat in our car to wait. Before I even situated myself, the order was done! The cashier/owner brought the food out to me in my car, that's service!
Now, to the food. I've had many a plate lunch in Oahu, Maui, and even California. The best being in Oahu and the worst in Maui (see Aloha Mixed Plate). This ranks in the middle - it's certainly the best so far in Maui. The teriyaki steak was grilled to medium but it wasn't the best cut of beef (maybe angus). The teriyaki sauce wasn't too sweet or salty, it was OK. The korean bbq chicken wasn't anything to write home about...it's pretty much teriyaki chicken w/out the teriyaki sauce.
All in all, this place is a good for a decent plate lunch with great service.
This place hit the spot after a day of snorkeling and having fun on the beach. After watching the sunset at Kapalua, we picked lunch plates to go since the joint had maybe 6-8 counter seats inside and a couple of patio tables outside. Since I couldn't decide what to get, I chose the combo (I think they upcharge on the combo) lunch plate with chicken katsu (delicious) and mahi mahi (ono) and it came with rice and mac salad (ok). The homemade tartar sauce for the mahi mahi was great. The serving was ginormous and the wife and I could have easily shared one meal. Highly recommend this restaurant and if you're staying in the area, I would call in to place your order since they do get busy and the wait could be significant.
Great tasty take out and cheap ! An easy walk from Front Street.
Thanks, Yelp iPhone app, once again for pulling me through starvation.
After a long plane ride, gathering luggage and rental car, we headed out towards our hotel at 3pm STARVING.
Chicken katsu, bbq chicken, rice, roasted veggies and macaroni salad--all good. After this, I was ready to face Maui again, after a nap.
Looking at the reviews, it's obvious everyone already knows how fab this place is! Quick take-out service, decent prices, and a wide variety of food options. I ate here twice during my stay on Maui. The mahi mahi with sun-dried tomatoes and capers plus the steamed veggies on the side was enough to feed me twice. The Maui Onion burger was damn fantastic. Definitely a must-stop place for the quality and the price!
The best take out/plate lunch in Maui! It was so good that my husband and I came here twice during our 5 day trip to Maui. We tried the Teriyaki Steak, Chicken Katsu and the Thai Chili Salmon. Everything was so delicious. My husband loves salmon and the Thai Chili Salmon was his favorite. My favorite dish was the Teriyaki Steak.
The service is great here too! The staff was friendly and efficient. We didn't wait very long for our food to be prepared. I will definitely come here for takeout if I ever visit Maui again.
We ordered the lemon caper mahi mahi saute, chicken katsu, grandma's tofu, and steamed veggies.
The mahi mahi and katsu were great, grandma's tofu was kind of bland, and the steamed veggies were too watery.
But the things that were good were good enough to make up for it and the price was definitely right by Maui standards.
I came to Maui like three or four years ago and my family LOVED this place. We always came here when we felt like a good lunch plate or something that just made us feel good.
I came back to Maui two days ago and its obvious that they changed owners. They had a new sign and the menu has changed. ALL THE PRICES WENT WAY UP! My BF and I came here right after we landed and I was disappointed b/c I think I kinda hyped the place up. We ordered two items. The Tofu Chow Fun and the Teriyaki Mushroom Burger. I don't understand why all these people are saying this place is quick b/c I feel like we waited for a while. I mean there were like two groups in front of us but I was able to go to the bathroom and then wait another 15 min for our food. The Tofu Chow Fun came out HOT HOT HOT.. I think I burned my mouth, but it was wet chow fun.. I prefer dry. The burger was good and they give you extra mushrooms. The french fries were probably the best thing we ate. Super crispy. The quality of the food really isn't that bad, but I mean for $10.50, I expect a pretty amazing burger w/ a homemade patty. This one looked and tasted bought.
"*SHEESH* That's SO expensive for a couple pieces of shrimp!!!"
"Oh my GAWD, they want 38$ for a piece of the same kind of fish that we caught this morning off Devon's boat?"
"DANG, that is HELLA expensive for a hamburger. Gonna' have to take out another mortgage just to feed you boys during this trip!!"
"9.75$ for an order of fried rice? Highway Robbery, I'm tellin' ya. Highway Robbery!"
Those were examples of typical exclamations Susan S. made throughout her stay with her two sons on Maui.
However, she did not utter those rants once when visiting Okazuya in Honokowai several times during her stay. Her comments were more like:
"WOOHOO. Dang, this fish is good. That's so reasonable for sauteed Ono with capers, lemon and sun-dried tomatoes! This place rules!"
"YUM, this burger is cooked to perfection!"
"I think this one plate lunch could feed us and a small Pacific Island nation for at LEAST several days"
Boys comments as they scarfed down their food:
"AWESOME fish and chips!!!" *scarf* scarf* "Mmmm"
"HECKA good chicken teri'!!"
*belch*
*toot* *TOOT*
"Mommy, can we eat here tomorrow?"
*toot*

Susan S: "You two boyz BOTH need to slow down your eating a bit. You're taking in WAY to much air!" *turns upwind to avoid the toxic downwind -- good thing Mom doesn't need to light a match!*
This place is great for plate lunches and takeout dinner. I recommend takeout since there is very limited seating. You can get the same yummy food for about one third less then most Lahaina area restaurants. Just remember to bring cash only.
Food: 4.5 stars.
Ambiance: 4.5 stars....some local yocals and primarily visitors getting stuff to go. This is a deli, so camp yourself somewhere else and enjoy the view and the food.
Service: 5 Sweet, down-to-earth..mahalo!
Sure wishin' I had some of that ono to munch down right now!
it is so very nice to be able to throw down a small wad of cash and be presented with a giant burger topped with a mountain of fried maui onions after a long day playing in the ocean.
best to go around, brah - welllll tied with the Fish Market sammies a few doors down mmmMMM.
ps: look out for aggressive local missionary ladies trolling the beachpark across the street for unsuspecting mute (due to mouth stuffed full of juicy crispy goodness) convert-ables! jesus with your burger?
Get the Korean BBQ Chicken. It's nicely grilled, very tender, and every piece is flavorful. I don't taste anything "Korean" about it, but it's still very good BBQ chicken.
If you can find it, I think pairing it with the Thai sweet chili sauce would make the chicken FAN-TAS-TIC.
Don't let this "locals" place deceive you! I HAD to eat the mahi with lemon caper sauce twice it was so good. This place is super clean, the family is lovely and the food is delicious.
Went for lunch. The place is to-go only just about, so we took it to a weird beach by the road. It was full of trees and flies.
The fried Mahi Mahi was ok. Luckily he was hungry, so he got both Mahis.
The maui onion burger was juicy and full of flavor and it was yummy and I could eat two. But then I'd be fat. But happy.
