Review from Krystal C.
Oakland, CA
I was nervous that this place was over hyped but was definitely pleased with the food and ambience. The place is pretty large and fancy for a Korean restaurant, great for large parties but it can get loud- when the fans are on for bbq, it sounds like a spaceship is about to take off.
Like everyone said, you get tons of banchans. Although I did notice that different tables got different stuff....Also, like all other Korean restaurants, the service here is a little spotty. I came here for an early bird dinner at 5:30 and there were only 4 other tables that were occupied. Yet I still had to ask for everything 3 times before I finally got it. Don't get me wrong, the staff is nice but they just seem very forgetful and always frantically running around, even though there were only 4 parties. What is nice is they are super asian and have those call buttons on the edge of the table which you can ring to get someone's attention. I didn't use it so am not sure how effective it really is.
As for food, I didn't come for the AYCE but regular dinner. The prices are about average, maybe a little higher than normal but it felt a little cleaner and better quality. I didn't want to bbq so just have them prepare kalbi in the back and the meat wasn't the junky fatty kind. The seafood pancakes was delicious, the right texture and crispiness. Soon do boo was good, didn't blow my mind though- I could have definitely got it a lot spicier. -
Review from Andrew S.
This place is fine. There really isn't any other korean bbq place in the area. The AYCE portion doesn't apply to the really good cuts of meat, and though this is common for AYCE joints, it's annoying. The really good cuts of meat are priced pretty insanely. Originally hailing from LA, I realize that I'm spoiled with a plethora of cheap, quality AYCE places, but this BBQ place is really really expensive for what it is.
Yes, it's better than Steve's Korean BBQ but I'm still searching for a great Bay Area Korean BBQ joint that's reachable via public transit. -

Oh my! All your can eat menu expansion!!! They offer not only marinated beef, non-marinated beef, and pork belly.... NOW they offer baby octopus, chicken, and spicy pork too! Super yum! Stuffed to the gills last night, we shared 6 plates of meat, 2 pots of tofu soup... Which were spicy and tasty.
Definitely one of my favs!1 Previous Review: Show all »

How could I not have updated on this place? It is my go to Korean place. Everything I had here is good. It is a low carb lover heaven. Protein galore.
They even have a lunch buffet. What a deal for $12.00. All you can eat of the yummy ban chan and Kalbi. It's worth it just for the Kalbi. But that's our secret.
Come here and you won't be disappointed. Leave full.Listed in: Top Restaurants

Review from Jenny K.
Been here I don't know how many times for $19.99 BBQ and $11.95 lunch buffet due to work circumstances, came out smelling like a fried duck, stomach heavily greased. That was expected. I did not, however, expect to crave Ohgane after months of Korean food deprivation.
The food is considered pretty decent for a buffet.
- You get your must-have dol sot, jhap chae, bolgogi, DIY bibimbop, tofu soup, fried rice, fish, etc. at lunch plus...
- All-you-can-eat plates of meat and about 12 refillable side dishes, seaweed soup, sweet rice soup (my fav) for BBQ. We only order the meat without marination otherwise it's too sweet/spicy, others may prefer differently. Don't over-cook; have them replace the grill surface when burnt junk starts to build up. I love rolling the cooked meat inside a piece of lettuce/kaenip leaf/ rice paper with green onion salad, dipping that in ssamjang before putting it in my mouth!
At the end of writing this review, I feel like a pig, but still madly hunger for this Korean food 600 miles away. -

Came here on a Friday night and it was busy. I ordered the seafood sizzling rice bowl (bibimbap). It was delicious and it was a lot, it could feed for two. We also got the miso soup stew and kimchi fried rice. The stew was good but i didn't try the fried rice. This restaurant is one of the few restaurants that offer many banchan (side dishes) which is great because they is the best part of the meal, in my opinion! Would definitely come here again! Plus, they have a private lot for patrons but be careful, they get full very quickly!

Authentic Naeng Myun(Cold Spicy Noodle). Best in Northern California !
I am from South Korea and Naeng Myun(NM) is my favorite. However, all the NM I tried in the US were horrible: they tasted worse than even a $3 instant NM found in supermarket. As a strong fan of NM, I have been in near darkness for over 5 years since I came to US. I always missed the real taste of NM from my country.
Today, I found a ray of hope. The cold spicy noodle they serve in Ohgane reminds me of the long forgotten experience of authentic NM. I really like their own made noodle, not factory-made. The noodle is very thin but also elastic. I don't know any korean restaurants who make their own noodle in northern California. Toppings(I tried raw fish) are also great as well as the spice.
One thing I would miss is the warm broth usually served with NM. This might be because I ordered Combo(BBQ+NM). -

Ohgane offers delicious Korean BBQ; and given the huge space, it provides a great ambiance for large groups! Based on the amount of food you get and overall quality, prices are quite reasonable.
We opted for the all you can eat Korean BBQ (we started with bulgogi, then moved on to spicy pork, pork belly, spicy chicken and ended up with baby octopus). Our meal also came with an abundance of banchan side dishes, bowls of rice, the best tasting seaweed soup, and all the fixings such as rice paper and lettuce to make your own Korean-style wraps. Overall, eating Korean BBQ at Ohgane was an awesome dining experience and will need to repeat it very soon! -
Review from Thuy P.
Sunnyvale, CA
This place is pretty good for Korean BBQ. It's definitely better than any Korean restaurant down in South Bay/Sunnyvale Ktown. My table of 7 made last minute reservations for 7:30pm with no problems, an hour before. Upon arrival, there were more than enough tables!!
So... the story unfolds....
My super sweet, uber friendly Korean friend placed our orders while we simultaneously bark out our selections for translations. hahaha. Unfortunately, our server wasn't the happiest of servers that night. He pathetically tried to be smart by acting like he didn't understand my friend's korean. What a d*ck. Keep that up and your tip will be as small as you *bleeep*. Enough said. Karma will be a bitch.
Oh yes... the food....
Seafood pancake - I enjoyed this... nothing special but always a winner in my book.
Pork Belly. This came cooked, no table grilling. It was just ok. I prefer if it were cooked a bit more to be a tad bit "crispy"... so, we threw it on the grill Got some stares from our server but whatEV.
Galbi/Bulgogi - I give it 7.5 out of 10. Pretty tasty.... marbling effect of the meat wasn't too bad. But still, tasty. I enjoyed it. Can't complain one bit.
Soon dubu, spicy, seafood - very good. Dude, so good. I want some now.
Suh Lang Tang - looks creamy but tasted flat to me. I attempted to season it with the salt/msg mixture but failed... got too salty yet still flat.
Overall, if I'm in the neighborhood, I'd stop by again. But I wouldn't drive 45 minutes from Sunnyvale out of my way for Korean food up in OAK. Now, I would drive down to LA for Korean... that's a completely different animal down there!! -

Clearlake Oaks, CA
This place is incredible. Made reservations for 6:30 on a Saturday night but there were plenty of available tables when we got there. Not only did we take the bus there (somehow that's more fun), but everyone from the host/ess to the busgirl to the waitstaff was amazingly attentive and helped us out with cooking the meat at the table, always at the ready to pour soju and Obi, and the food was out of this world. We got the spicy pork and galbee(kalbi). and...19 banchan?! Sweet baby Jesus.
Looked up at one point and noticed the restaurant had been flooded with many Asian folk- always reassuring. Said thank you and goodbye in Korean, and our waitress gave us a lollipop and sent us on our way back into the foggy chilly night. It was brilliant, and I can't wait to go back. If I can't be back in Korea, this is the next best thing. -
Review from Christina L.
Berkeley, CA
This place gets crowded because it's yummy, but they have HORRIBLE service. I believe that the service is also a part of the experience, not just the food. I went with a group of seven individuals. We were a little late past our reservation, but there wasn't a line to sit down, so it was probably fine.
The place was packed, and you'd think that the staff would be more organized with the way they handle service since it was a regular Saturday night. We sat down and our orders were taken. We waited 40 minutes for our food to come, well the first set of food at least. TWO of our dishes were not delivered, and the waiter even came back to ask what we had ordered. Did they just forget? My order came out at least 10 - 15 minutes after everyone else, even though I had ordered the appetizer for my dish. How disappointing.
Additionally, every time we ran out of tea and water (5-6 times with a table of seven), we had to ASK for the tea to be refilled.
The food was good, it was perfectly seasoned.
3 stars for an okay dinner, but the service ruined the experience for me. I will be on the lookout for a place in the area that can better accommodate a large group. -

FINALLY! A Korean restaurant in the bay area that I will go back to!
Its not as expensive as Seoul Garden and the portions are good and yes...the food was good!
Banchan --- we seriously had 20 different kinds on the table -- LOVE THAT! I thought I was at home!
Deonjang chigae - yum! It was plain and simple, veggies, pork (we asked for the seafood to be left out) and BIG pieces of dooboo!
Dweji bulgogi - spicy, not dry and flavorful
I'm a believer that a Korean restaurant has to have good deonjang chigae to be called a Korean restaurant - this one does!
I'll be back to try all the other dishes! -

This place is fantastic - best of the dozen or so korean places i've been to in Oakland. Went tonight for BBQ and was blown away - marinated short ribs, spicy pork belly, with some bibimbap on the side. Banchan is excellent as is everything else. Sochu is cheap (honestly i'm still a little drunk as i'm writing this). Service is incredible, as good as restaurants with twice the cost for food. Highly, highly recommended, and get the bbq when you go, please!

I have been on a personal quest to find great Korean eats that stood up to the great K-eats in LA. I am happy to report Ohgane is good eats, tender and very well flavored meats, generous banchan, and in general, very fresh-tasting food. On service, the staff were definitely running around trying to keep up with the crowd - but they were still pretty attentive to our table and quite friendly. We will definitely be back.

Berkeley, CA
Great Korean BBQ. A bit on the pricey side, but the quality and the sheer amount of food you get will leave you satisfied.
The specialties of the house are galbi marinated short ribs and a variety of cold noodle dishes. A simple order of BBQ includes 19 (that's right 19) banchan side dishes, soup, a cold noodle dish, and all the fixings to make korean-style wraps.
Everything was great and service was stellar.
I have also been here for lunch, when they offer an all you can eat buffet. There was a good variety of dishes, disappointingly everything was cold. I did come quite late though, and the restaurant was already empty. While I was there, they did bring a fresh batch of short ribs, so I made sure to fill up on those.
I definitely recommend you check this place out. You will get a filling meal whether you come for lunch or dinner. Great for a large group of friends or a dinner date. -
Review from R O.
Hayward, CA
Ok I admit grilling my own grub is probably what I should have done instead of ordering service but that isn't an excuse for what I went through . If a eatery is going to be good or great you have to hit most major points, agree?
Keep in mind I ordered service
-bulgogi definetly freezer burned
-fried calamari appetizer is bs, you might ask, you ordered fried calamari at a Korean rest., why? I think the real question here is why offer it on the menu? got served giant squid legs with a soggy broken batter, flavorless, big, weird, ughhhh! the sauce it came with did play a role later in the meal, they also served it with the main meal
-pork belly (korean bacon) was alright, pre-cooked, used calamari sauce with this, vinegar based sauces with grilled pork belly is good eats
-soft tofu soup w/mushrooms, highlight of the meal, hot and bubbly, winner here!
-kimchi, quality not there for all the hype
-lettuce, 1 large leaf, 4 small, had to ask, no refills offered
-garlic slices, nope, garlic chunks, then the waiter dropped 1 on the table so 5
-2 jalapenos slices
-bean paste, yes, a little bit
-water toward the end of the meal, 1 cup for me, 1/2 cup for my guest, note this was a 8 oz. cup, had to ask, no refills offered
-hot tea, had to ask, no refills offered
-Service was a big issue here, for some reason, it was dodge city, I finally came to the conclusion they practice the age old art of "SELECTIVE SERVICE" they select who they want to serve over here. The only person who provided service was the host at the door, he immediately sat us, provided the hot tea, and assured us service, 10 minutes later a waiter showed up, 10 minutes later all our food came, 15 minutes host strolled by and happened to ask if I needed anything, I said yes lettuce, the host grabbed it for us, next thing you know the waiter showed up like he got smacked by the host, after that the worst service I've had in a long time, nothing until toward the end of the meal, I asked for the check and water
also figured out why this place charges so much, to pay for the old senior citizen security guard outside in the cold
if you want to eat fresh food with reasonable prices in an unbiased atmosphere, Korea House in Hayward, menu not as large but your business is appreciated
you served it and I shitted it.... -

This was the first Korean restaurant I tried after moving to the Bay Area, and it's been 2 years since my first and only visit. I've circulated around the various Korean places in Oakland trying to find a decent kimchi chigae and found myself giving Ohgane another shot.
The kimchi chigae/jigae was... not great. It wasn't terrible, but definitely not worth going to a restaurant and paying for. I could make it better at home, and I'm definitely NOT that great at Korean cooking.
But we also got the dolsot bibimbap and it was amaaazing! I don't think I have ever raved about bibimbap before. It's such a common and consistently good dish. A dish that is hard to mess up. It's like the club sandwich of Korean food. But this bibimbap was extraordinary. The veggies were so fresh and flavorful, and the meat was plentiful and delicious.
Seriously, I would come back here just for that bibimbap. The best I've ever had.
The search for great kimchi chigae in the bay area continues however and I'm still wary about the BBQ here.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I heart korean food.
Food is pretty good here, but the service...holy moly.
Make sure you try and sit in the main part of the restaurant which is the section in the back. If you're in the front - you might as well serve yourself. -

This review is for their all you can eat Korean lunch. While extensive, extremely misleading. Everything was cooked and set out and only occasionally got refilled.
Nothing fancy, nothing great. I accept it for its taste. It would have been much better if they dropped the price for it. Maybe $7 and it will go up in stars, but was fine. Nothing great.
Say no to the lunch all you can eat ayce. -

I have to admit, every time I go Korean now it's with a dolsot bibimbap. I've had it here many times and almost every other Korean restaurant I've been to now. Not only is ohgane's version very good, they also have a wide variety of ban chan.
The only inconsistency has been the service. But when the regular crew is in, they are very warm and friendly and always make me feel welcome. -
Review from Shareef S.
Lafayette, CA
Ohgane is my favorite Korean BBQ place in Oakland. There is nothing better then spending a lazy Saturday afternoon smelling chicken/beef/short ribs sizzle on a table BBQ surrounded by 20 plates of food. The service is top notch, I've always had a really helpful waitress there that to make sure I don't screw up my Bul Gogi. The drink selection is pretty good. I usually get the Jinro Original Soju, unless I'm feeling crazy then I get the Jinro So Fresh.
Apart from the actual BBQ I really like the Ban Chan and the cold noodle bowl (Naeng Myun). One time I even got the Man Du Jun Gol casserole, which was very tasty. The only reason why I'm giving them 4 stars is because the price is a little high. -

The lunch buffet: not good. Not even ok. it was better than bad.
Half of the "hot" food was cold. And I got the very strong feeling that much of the food might be from the grocer's freezer section. We paid $30 and all my boyfriend and I really consumed was fried rice and a couple Cokes. As a lower-income person it sucks to realize you're about to pay someone $30 to be unsatisfactory. I guess that's why we have Yelp right? -

All of a sudden everyone became an expert on Korean food overnight. Does it make sense to compare restaurants that are over 500 miles apart? I agree with everyone that says they have better Korean food in LA. But there is a Koreatown down there where you don't even have to learn a word of English and you can survive, so I would not except anything less than the best.
Ohgane is the best Korean restaurant in Northern California.
Anyone that does not feel the same way can take me to their favorite Korean restaurant and I will pay for the meal + gas if it can compare with the banchan and kalbi. -

Very good food and excellent service. The place is huge with plenty of BBQ tables and an upstairs party area. There was a birthday party that night so it was a bit noisy.
We skipped the BBQ and went for traditional dishes like the seafood padjun. grilled squid (oh jing ah bokum), pollock roe stew and sea bass stew. Everything was very tasty. A bit salty, but expected for Korean food. The banchan was probably the best part - 16 varieties brought to your table. Very good. -

$25 and 3 hours of all-you-can-eat later, I was rolled out of the restaurant.
Is it LA Korean BBQ? No...but you're not in LA, so deal with it. It's solid meat, great service, good sides, and very legit fire. Will definitely be back in a few weeks after I recover. -

Berkeley, CA
A few friends and I rolled up to this place during lunch time and checked out the lunch buffet. The lunch buffet only included the short ribs as the Korean BBQ portion, everything else were things like chap chae, kimchi fried rice and some other assorted dishes.
Being manly men, we wanted more meat, so we decided to go for the $20 all-you-can-eat korean bbq.
I quickly glanced at the menu, and noticed that you only get three choices of meat for all-you-can-eat: chicken, beef, and pork belly. I was fine with that initially because I thought it meant that included many different types of beef cuts i.e. galbi and bulgogi and brisket.
But to my dismay, it was just a so-so bulgogi that was available.
When Asians go to all-you-can-eat at Korean BBQ you gotta get tons and tons of beef because it is a known fact that chicken takes a ton of time to cook, which means you let the settle food in for longer while you wait, meaning you get feeling of "full" quicker. Beef takes a fraction of the time, meaning you can get your moneys worth as you can stuff more beef into yourself before feeling full :)
So denying us of the option of these wonderful cuts of beef and leaving us with one mediocre one makes me wonder what is my $20 going towards?
The chicken? The chicken was ok, just the same average korean bbq.
The pork belly? I hope not, the pork belly was terrible. Not only do they cook it for you but it has such a bland taste and not high quality at all.
The banchan? Nope, just regular ol' banchan, nothing special.
Maybe I am just spoiled from the socal all-you-can-eats like cham sut gol for example, which is way better and even cheaper, plus you get infinite thrifty ice cream?
The service was also not very good, it took us 3 times to get water, and 2 times to get them refilled. Though I'll give them the plus side of refilling our meat quickly and changing our grill constantly.
Oh well, the search for local korean bbq continues! -

I never cared much for this place, but I came with some friends here because it was close to the birthday girl's house. Our main waiter was HORRIBLE. He could not have hidden his dislike for customer service anymore than he did last Monday. No smile, no checking in on our table, no fucking personality at all, besides a shitty one. We saw people from other tables getting up to get their own things because that server couldn't care less....and it was NOT busy. Seriously, the other servers at least faked their kindness.
The quality of the meat has gone down significantly too. Don't even bother with the sam gyub sal....that's my favorite Korean meat of all time and Ohgane always fucks it up. My group will NEVER come back again. Oh, and we're all Korean and know what good Korean food should taste like. For.ayce, try Koryo on Telegraph. It's a couple of dollars more, but way better quality and service. Im fucking pissed that I left a 15% tip because he did not deserve it, but, I paid with a credit card and I've heard of restaurants scamming people. -

We stopped in on a chilly summer evening; Caribbean apprehensive husband in tow.
I was suffering from a cold and needed something spicy, warm and comforting. Grouch needed meat "wittout alouta ting" (Creole for "without weird nonsense in my plate"), so of course Korean was the perfect solution.
I ordered the Hae mul kal guk su (seafood soup with handmade thick noodles) and asked them to make it spicy. He ordered Gal bi (marinated BBQ beef short ribs).
First came the Ban Chan came, plate after plate. I happily ate most of it, since most of the items terrified my discerning husband. Very tasty.
Two small bowls of soup and rice followed.
Shortly after came my enormous bowl of deliciousness and the BBQ platter. If he could have turned neon happy at the site of his sizzling pile of meat; bright neon orange and blinking he would have been. Don't repeat this, but at one point I actually had to ask him to use his utensils... seriously; face down. I'd say he likes Korean BBQ.
My Guk Su was probably the best I have had in a long time. The seafood in it was generous and the broth was flavorful and satisfyingly salty but not too salty.
I should also call out that the service was quick, attentive and pleasant. We will be back. -

Went to the lunch buffet today with the boyfriend. We arrived around 11:40 and there was only one other group there, but by the time we left at 12:30 the room was pretty much full.
I was a little wary going in because of the mixed reviews regarding the lunch buffet, but I was pleasantly surprised. They had a good variety and everything was pretty tasty.
The short ribs were a little on the cold side, but if you took pieces from the bottom of the pan they were much warmer. There were plenty of tender, meaty pieces, you just need to pick and choose wisely. I was a little sad that the chicken wings weren't crispy, but because they are sitting in hotel pans it wasn't a big surprise.
Overall, it was a good weekday lunch, although with the price increase, it's a bit on the expensive side for regular lunch spot. -

This review is for dinner.
Lots of ban chan, but that's about the only thing they gave a lot of. Ordered the bulgogi and galbi and both were very good. The servers cooked the meat for us over the bbq and cut everything so there was no need to chew off the bones or anything.
I really wish they would have given larger orders of meat though, seemed a little small. Nonetheless the meat was really tender and went well in rice paper and lettuce. One of the waitresses was so nice, she even brought out a little foil dish so we could grill our garlic without it getting burnt!
Also got the kimchi stew with tofu and beef. I'm such a sucker for korean stews and soups, I really love the kick. This one didn't disappoint.
I would definitely come again if I'm willing to pay a little more for korean bbq than I'm used to, and I'd want to try the bi bim bap! Looked good! -

You can always tell how good a korean restaurant will be by the quality and taste of the ban-chan that they serve.

Ohgane is probably the best Korean BBQ restaurant in Oakland. The atmosphere is very comfortable and the food is delicious! Very high quality meats and tasty side dishes. Definitely a treat!
