This is the Best Sushi I've ever had! I live in Colorado and travel a lot for business. I love sushi and have it every chance I can. The Tokyo Maki is simply amazing. I compare every other Sushi place to Oh Yoko with only a few coming close but none reach the same level. The soy sauce and crunch are home made by Jin. The fish is so fresh and the preparation is second to none. Everytime I fly out here it is my first meal! I crave it like you wouldn't believe. If you are anywhere in South Jersey or Philly you Must come. Believe me you will Absolutely fall in Love with it.
Thankyou so much Jin and Inmi
My second day in the area and I was craving more sashimi, (was in Philly last week, ate at Fuji Mountain, but that's another review). I was surprised to find Yelp listed so many Japanese restaurants around here, reading through the reviews, some of them turned out to be hibachi places (which I don't care for much, not to offend anyone, IMHO, these places tend to be all show and no go)
so I decided on Oh Yoko! It seems to be well liked and it was only 5 min away from my hotel, but it ended up more like 15, I keep missing the turn off and ended up on the other side of 295, twice! (Okay, I didn't have a GPS, and my phone batt was completely dead, my brain was running on memory, it was getting late, my blood sugar was low, the sun was in my eyes, the wind was blowing in my face, my nose was itching....)
I got there just before 3, yeah late lunch, one other person was just getting ready to leave, I sat at the bar and asked the chef about his fishes (I've learn this is the best way to get the freshest fish, well if he is honest. If not, I'll end up with something that might kill me and die and can never go back again, so I'm putting my life in their hands).
Anyway I ordered what I always order, Hamachi -Yellow Tail sashimi, which has always been my favorite, buttery, clean, oh so yummy! And took the chef recommendation and tried the Kampachi - Amber Jack, 3 pieces of each in sashimi, I find the rice soaks up too much soy sauce and takes away the flavor of the fish. I haven't had Kampachi before, it turns out to be similar to Hamachi, but a litter firmer, and a tad more fatty, it came with a little miced dakon, I ate them side by side, one then the another, I have to say, I love my Hamachi, but this Kampachi melted in my mouth, it is definitely way up there on the list. I also had the vegetable udon, noodles cooked perfectly through but still firm, broth was very light with a hint of sweetness, and a small side dish of pickled yellow radish and pearl scallion, the sweet and sour of the pickle roots complemented the broth so nicely. And the green tea was very delicate with a hint of browned rice flavor.
Throughout the meal, Jang and Amy (sp?) husband & wife team kept checking on me, they are the nicest people I've met in a long time, super friendly, and Jang guarantees the fish to be fresh, I definitely have no complaint whatsoever. I asked them about a good miso ramen place in the area, since I've been also craving it, they told me it's not very popular here, and he too misses his ramen as well, but they suggested a place for ja jang myeon - blackbean sauce noodle, but since the lady who owns that place does not speak English, Amy wrote down my order in Korean so all I have to do is give her the card, and I'll be enjoying my seafood ja jang myeon, now that my friends is what I call NICE!
Been here 4 times now and it's always a treat. Wasabi fries make my day, and their recommendations on special rolls are superb. Give them a chance to make you like something new and they will succeed.
Sorry Emerlyn, but I think this place is 2.5 stars maybe a little less... :P
Went with Emerlyn and co. for lunch on a Saturday.. definitely have had better. Odd decor for a Japanese place with the English doll-house curtains and the non-descript interiors. On to the food.. Unauthentic Japanese-esque cuisine. The udon soup dish was over-cooked and had a variety of vegetables in it that was just plain weird for a Japanese dish including bok choi.
The sushi.. if you're into rolls, I suppose that this might be your place. Again, though, I'm no fan of the sauce-drenched rolls which seem to defy the ethics of sushi. Ordered a number of simple vegetable rolls. Pieces were loosely and incompletely wrapped and unevenly cut/different sizes in length. I take this to mean a novice or careless sushi chef.
Prices were inconsistent with the quality, although if they were charging for service, it'd make sense. A very nice, attentive server who was courteous is always a plus, although we -were- the only customers in this place at the time.
A Korean staff, and the sushi chef is a Japanese-speaking Korean man.
A nice place to go to if you're in the area I guess but just mediocre food and ambiance.
I heart Oh Yoko!
Fresh sushi, great atmosphere, and the Beatles = Love
To add to that -- Inme, the owner, is so sweet!! She keeps me wanting to come back time and time again. :)
Hmm...3.5 stars. I went here for lunch today with a group of friends, and I think the meal was pretty decent. I ordered the Boston roll (one of their many specialty rolls) which was good, and I enjoyed their sweet potato sushi too, which was pretty unique. I also ordered the chicken udon dish, which was a bit too saucy for me (too much of the oil or dressing on top), but pretty tasty nonetheless with lots of vegetables. The complimentary miso soup was average.
Although I have to say the customer service is one of the best of any place I've been to. The lady waited on us hand and foot, and was very courteous. However it was a bit pricey (close to $10 for an appetizer and more than $20 for an entree), so I won't be eating here often. Somehow I just don't feel like the quality of the food correlated well with the price at all. Not a bad place to try though.
After almost giving up on finding really good sushi near my apartment, I conducted a little yelp research and came across Oh Yoko. Not only did they have great reviews, but a few yelpers noted that the owners are huge fans of the Beatles and play only Beatles music in the restaurant. I quickly realized this place had the potential to both satisfy my sushi craving and provide a solution for what to get my step-dad for Christmas (he's into sushi and also happens to be John Lennon's number one fan!).
I went to check the place out myself for lunch on Saturday. In Mi, one of the owners, kept me company as I was dining solo and they were not too busy at the time. I learned that Oh Yoko has been open for three years and all of the fish comes from Hawaii. The menu was large and had plenty of delicious-sounding options. There was a huge list of special rolls that made choosing only one very difficult. I opted for a volcano roll, which came with spicy tuna, mango, avocado, masago and crunch. True to its name, the dish arrived in the shape of a volcano, with wedges of mango and avocado in the center. It was phenomenal. So good, that I decided to order another roll~ this time with shrimp tempura and spicy tuna on top. Meanwhile, In Mi brought me a bowl of their clear soup, which was a perfect complement to the sushi.
I left feeling very full but with a new favorite sushi spot and a gift card for my parents. Success!
Be still my little sushi loving heart...I think Oh Yoko make have had it's way with me... and I am HOOKED! (pun intended)
Thanks to my fellow Yelpers I decided to give them a try and if I haven't convinced you yet of my unadulterated passion for it yet... well stay tuned . :)
Mikki and I headed over there the eve of Feb. 13th...our tummies quite empty in anticipation of some utter deliciousness and we were not disappointed in the least.
First off, the service? Well absolutely unbelievable and attentive. Personally, I haven't had a server that truly impressed me like that in years. Very knowledgeable, friendly..and just incredibly pleasant. They deserve 5 stars just for that. A lot of times service can really affect your experience and by the time you get a taste of the food.. the anticipation is at a low and it really waters down any affect that the food might have. So, A++ for service!
Food Highlights... I was absolutely smitten with the Tuna Flower. It's served thinly sliced in a martini glass which is lined with a light, flavorful, horseradish sauce and is really delicious. We also tried some veggie tempura, the V Day roll (also very gooooood), the volcano roll, and shared a box special (oh my god... SO MUCH FOOD) Of course though.. I still managed to leave that tiny spot available for dessert which consisted of green tea ice cream with banana tempura. Simple, yet tasty.
I honestly can say this was my first sushi experience that exceeded my expectations and I was shockingly full for hours on end. I even passed on the free fudge brownie samples at Trader Joe's on the way home?!
Definitely worth the drive and will be gladly returning!
I went here today for lunch. I have passed by this place a couple times and always wanted to try it out.
The first thing that hit me was just how nice the people were here. The sushi chefs and the woman, who I think owns the place, were very hospitable and gracious. The sushi chef even said he would make any roll I desired to my taste. I ended up sticking with the menu. I had an Alaska roll and a Titanic S. roll. Both were very good. Both had lots of salmon. I also tried their wasbi pork dumplings. These were very good as well. Often times you get Japanese dumplings which are very small. The dumplings here are a very nice, large size. I liked them a lot.
They gave me free soup and water to go with my order.
I will definitely be back. It is a very laid back atmosphere. They really like the Beatles, so I think that's all you'll hear in the dining room. Also, they make this green tea ice cream dessert which looks really good. I didn't get to taste it this go round, but next time I'll be sure to stay for desert for sure.
We stopped by at 1:30 PM on a Wednesday which was after the lunch rush of the cubicle crowd. We had the entire restaurant to ourselves so the owner was very attentive and explained all the specials in detail. Her attention towards us was not because she was bored for lack of other patrons, but because she has a real love for the business and sushi. We talked about Uni (sea urchin) and I told her that was the only thing I have tried and don't like. She said, "The first time I try Uni, I no like. The second time I try Uni, I still no like. The third time, I like" which gave us a little laugh. She gave us fresh wasabi which she told us she reserves for sashimi only due to it being twice as expensive as the wasabi powder. Our first course was the yellow tuna with jalapenos which was really nice. We had white tuna sashimi which was amazing. It had such great texture and flavor. We also had Madai (red snapper) which neither of us had before and both loved. Staples like giant clam and Ikura were really good. The chef toasted the Nori for the spicy tuna hand rolls which is really nice effect. Sadly, they were out of scallops and quail eggs but assured us they were getting deliveries Friday and Saturday. The bill came to $120 for two which is a little pricey but I'm happy to pay for quality. The only suggestion I have for the owner is to do a little work on the website which looks amateurish and does not do the restaurant any justice at all.
I'm a huge fan of this place. It has a nice relaxing atmosphere. The people who run the place, chefs, and waitresses are all always incredibly nice! I've been there a few times now and they greet me with hugs!! They are very very nice! The food and presentation is always perfect. The fish are always so very fresh and flavorful, even people who are hesitant towards seafood will eat it and love it!
Its BYOB and a great place to bring family, friends, date.
This is one of my favorite destinations for sushi. Of course, I like to go all out with my fish, but this place doesn't disappoint. I always order their Love Boat, which has enough sushi/sashimi for two people. It's a nice variety of great quality fish. Another thing that's a *must have* is their wasabi fries. It is soooooo amazing!! I also love their Okonomiyaki... very tasty. This place is highly recommended whether you are a hardcore sushi eater, or if you're afraid of the raw stuff, they have a lot of cooked entrees as well.
I give this restaurant five stars with one caveat, expect to pay top dollar. The sashimi scallop is out of this world, and it's plated with fresh ground wasabi, not that crappy wasabi paste you get other places. The service is par, but it's the designer rolls that make this place remarkable. I have eaten at a lot of sushi bars in South Jersey and in Philadelphia and this is by far my favorite. My Dad lived in Japan for 4 years and he agrees. I usually walk away with $100 tab for two people, considering it's a BYOB that adds up to a lot of sushi but I think it's worth every penny.
I came here when it first opened. the staff was very friendly, the food phenominal. I came during a slow lunch period and b/c it had just opened not too many people knew about it. Soo I had the royal treatment of being the only customer, Sad I had to take the food to go..
Sitting there waiting for my food I couldnt help but admire the setting. It is absolutely cute and very friendly. I took a picture of it with my camera phone and sent it to my bf and told him we definitely need to come back and actually sit down and eat. He agreed after seeing the picture. year later, we've been back plenty of times, I still have the first picture I took of the place on my phone!
Love the food and the sushi is superb.
I was torn between trying Oh Yoko and Sagami tonight, and went with the former. I ordered pork pot stickers as appetizer, which was delish, and spicy tuna (the spiciest I've ever had!) roll, and philadelphia roll with miso soup (meh, it was okay), totalling about $25. The sushi wasn't extraordinary, but the customer service was excellent. It's not a Japanese like ambiance, which you would expect at these places, but a more modern and simple feel. I noticed that the staff were actually Korean. They do play Beatles music continuously, which is always a plus.
it just doesn't get any better than Oh Yoko.
it's my family's favorite sushi restaurant, and my sister's choice for her birthday meal. my mom called Oh Yoko early in the day to speak with the owner. we had a budget, and wanted to do a nice spread at a pre-determined price per person. the owner said that this would be no problem, they'd put something together for our group. we made a few requests and left the rest up to them.
we were so thrilled with what they prepared for us. both the quality and the quantity were amazing, and we had a great time! the presentation was gorgeous. as always, the staff was super attentive and the service was impeccable. i cannot recommend this place enough. i wish i could give them 6 stars.

My #1 favorite sushi restaurant of all time!
There are lots of really great sushi restaurants in the Jersey/Philly area. So why do I keep going back to Oh Yoko? Quite frankly, nobody can beat their service, and the fish they use has got to be one of the freshest around.
I absolutely love the owners, they really know what great customer service is. They treat us like royalty every time we go in there.
On a side note, if you ever have a sweet tooth and want to indulge, the banana with green tea ice cream that they serve there is the best!
I understand most people seem to be in love with this restaurant, but I think thats because they have not tried anything better. I must say the sashimi is very fresh and the appetizers are good - but the sushi is nothing to cheer about. I have had better variety, quality and taste elsewhere.
I have been looking for a great sushi place since I moved here three years ago and have only found so so places... until now. Oh Yoko was wonderful I went for lunch on a Sunday and the staff was very pleasant and the Sushi was delicious. I recommend the tiger tail and just like my friend Erin the wasabi fries are amazing. I will definitely be going back!
We made a trip to Jersey just to try Oh Yoko based on the rave reviews. I was a little hesitant once we arrived because of its location in a nondescript strip mall, but reassured by Oh Yoko's clean and contemporary interior.
We're pretty sure the owners are Korean, but the sushi chefs were Japanese and I guess that's what really matters. The lunch prices were not as affordable as I would like, but the fish quality was excellent. I ordered the sushi/sashimi bento and my husband had a roll combo, which was presented beautifully. The tuna roll was cut in the shape of a flower complete with a dragon roll catepillar!
The service was very attentive as well. They kept asking if we liked the food and would come back (maybe because we're Asian?) If I happen to be in Jersey again, I'd definitely pay Oh Yoko another visit.
like Michelle C., i also found oh yoko thanks to yelp. my fiance and i just got back from dinner there and we loved everything we ordered. i highly recommend the wasabi fries - but don't fill up on them. we went for the special rolls (tiger tail and volcano). both were pretty spicy, but definitely delicious. i got a few pieces of sushi as well. i have never tried the sea urchin, and i asked the waitress how it was. she called me brave for trying and told me that she personally didn't like it at first - i'd have to try it a 4 or 5 times before i'd like it. i love that kind of honesty from servers. (incidentally, no. i didn't like it. but i don't think i'll be trying it 3 or 4 more times.) everyone on the staff was super friendly. they yell hello and goodbye to everyone.
the only complaint i would have is that there was only one waitress and one busser on a saturday night, and the service was a little slow - but definitely worth it.
UPDATE: i actually went back here the very next day with a friend for lunch. yes, i loved it THAT MUCH that i went 2 days in a row. i am that girl. anyway, the owners recognized me from the previous night and explained that one of their staff called out and that's why they were a little slow, so that's definitely not a normal thing. (i felt a little bad for even mentioning it.) anyway, we ordered salmon sushi and special rolls with salmon in it, and the sushi chef/owner noticed i loved salmon, and gave me some suggestions as to what salmon roll i should try next. i can't wait to go back and try out his suggestions!
BYO. I do not really like sushi too much. Just recently have tried it. It needs to be really good with many options and this place certainly offers that. Good sushi tends to be pretty hard to find, from what I have heard. This place certainly offers great sushi. The entire staff is SO friendly as well. When you entered you a greeted by a group hello from servers, food runners, the chefs, and the owners. The same group dishes out good byes and thank you's when the meal has concluded as well. The owners even take part in food preparation and bringing food to tables. Friendly staff, great food, nice ambiance, good price. What more could you ask for. If you are looking for a place to take a friend or loved one that you are trying to get into sushi or at least to try it, look no further.
Been there twice and have enjoyed the food tremendously. This is a great place for sushi. Their fish is flown in and never frozen and hence it costs a little more (not by much at all) to eat there. I must say that this is definitely one of the top sushi places in the entire area (can't really say its the top because i haven't tried some other places).
Some recommendations:
For soup, opt for the Japanese broth with mushroom and scallion (clear soup) rather than miso. Its purposely on the peppery side.
Spicy Chirashi Don - a variety of fish and salmon roe on a bed of sushi rice, vegetables, and Japanese chili sauce
- I had this my first time there and although I've eaten this dish elsewhere, nothing compares to the one here @ Yoko. Its really unique and very well varied - if you've not had this before, you should.
The Spider Maki is good too. Crisp and yet not too crunchy.
The owners are a husband and wife team and are great hosts.
Ok, I am a little biased on this one. This is my aunt and uncle's restaurant. That said, I am going to be honest and to the point. I am an avid sushi/sashimi-eater so I have been to many different Japanese restaurants in the nation and abroad after hearing claims such as: "the best sushi restaurant is in this metropolitan area and they've been around for this many years"; however, Oh Yoko! challenges one's belief that a great sushi spot is located in the heart of a grand city or hidden underground or must've been around for decades, etc, etc. This unpretentious little getaway is located inside a shopping center in Cherry Hill, NJ, and it has quickly become a favorite for many sushi-lovers. The secret to Oh Yoko!, for those of you who have not dined there, is that my uncle is a perfectionist, and, thankfully so since everything you are served is always above expectations - freshest ingredients, impeccable quality and gorgeous presentations (some serious eye-candy). Further, the service that they provide simply cannot be matched; they go above and beyond any expectations so one can't help but admire the sincerity and gratitude that they extend. All right, without going off on a tangent, here are some of my favorites at Oh Yoko!: Chirashi don (asian salad with chopped/sliced sashimi, bunch of other things, and semi-spicy sauce), wassabi fries, emerald roll, garden roll, spider roll, and the aurora roll. However, if you are like me and L-L-LOVE sushi/sashimi, this is what I normally get anywhere I go (a la carte): yellowtail, mackerel, sea urchin roe, amaebi, white tuna, and scallop. I hope you check out Oh Yoko! and find your experience well worth the visit.
I love this place. Most importantly, the sushi and sashimi are always fresh. Oh Yoko! is super-friendly and we've been treated with class-A service each time we have gone. Their wasabi fries are superb. Hands down the best sushi in So. Jersey.
The food at Oh Yoko! the second time I went was still worth 5-stars. The wasabi fries are delish, the tuna flower was beautiful and fresh, and my Fantasia Platter was a piece of art. The reason for the lost star? My dining companion and I ran up a $68 bill for just the above mentioned items plus a volcano roll. The tuna flower and Fantasia platter were off the specials menu, and there were no prices listed. I'm not jacking the star because of the price-- the food is definitely fresh and beautiful enough to warrent it-- I'm doing so because I felt like I was tricked into buying them. I never imagined that "specials" would be so expensive, and had I realized, I would have picked something cheaper and surely just as delicious. Also, the service was very slow. The waitress seemed to be distracted by the one other occupied table in the restaurant, which was full of friends and/or family. My friend actually had to go get her from this table to ask for our check after we had been waiting quite awhile.

This is one of our favorite places, but they raised the price, so that's the only ding. Otherwise I'm totally with the other reviewers here. Check out the other stuff on the menu besides the Sushi - that's really where the food is distinctive. Also you won't get a better salad in any Japanese restaurant.
i love this place! BEST sushi i have EVER had. and it's not even expensive. the restaurant is beautifully designed, and home to the most attractive sushi bar i have ever laid eyes on. the sushi chef will chit chat with you and he is HILARIOUS. the waitresses are all very nice too. i think that the music selection is what really separates this place from other japanese retaurants- they only play beatles music. (hence the name oh yoko). i really liked this place and i would recommend it to anyone who is looking for really great and inexpensive japanese cuisine.
Oh Yoko is located right around the corner from my workplace. As sushi-lovers, one of my colleagues and I decided to give it a try, and it was a choice that was unforgettable--yes, it has lead to an itch I must scratch at least once a week! The owners are just delightful, and always make me feel like I'm a special guest! I speak a little Japanese (albeit very rudimentary), yet they embrace my efforts and always support and expand my vocabulary. This in itself is so refreshing; however, their food is equally as refreshing! They offer a lunch special (sushi box lunch) at a steal! For a mere $9.00 one gets five pieces of beautifully presented and oh-so-fresh sushi which includes tuna, salmon, white fish, shrimp, and eel. Additionally, the chef includes a delicious California roll, miso soup (hands down, the best in the area) sesame noodles with veggies, a house salad, AND a sample of the appetizer of the day! What more could you ask for! The shoyu (soy sauce) is made by the house, and that's just one of the many special touches of Oh-Yoko. As a person who often frequents Sagami and has occasionally indulged at Morimotos, I would say this place, especially for lunch, will give the aforementioned a run for their money. Please stop by for lunch, and I'm sure you'll have a truly pleasant experience.
