This place used to be one of the best breakfast places around. The waitresses were courteous and attentive, the food portions were massive, and food was consistent and excellent.

Then they changed their kitchen staff (they hired some less expensive people) and all of a sudden (unless you had the owner there to cook for you) the food started to come out greasy and inconsistent. The waitresses remained pleasant at least.

I always would eat there on weekdays, except once I went there on a Saturday and the place is a zoo - the service deteriorates markedly, probably because the waitresses are running all over the place and the kitchen is behind on all the orders. They really should just raise the prices a dollar and hire back some decent cooks.

Slow service, asked continually for water and kept asking.  Is it no longer customary to bring customers water after they're seated?  C'mon!!  Aside from our waitress being slow and continually interrupting our conversation, she was nice.  As mentioned, all of the servers and even the cooks were high school kids.  No joke!  Ageism isn't my style, but prepare yourself for inexperienced service.  The owner was there, helping serve tables and saying hi which is a nice homely touch.

We had: two chicken fried-steak breakfasts', a scramble of some sort and the HUGE breakfast that's like 18$.  The chicken fried steak was bitter and very sharp.  This may be due to being fried in buttermilk twice?  The potato's were really good and eggs were eggs...good.  The scramble was just up to par.  Biscuits and gravy was very tasty, gravy having a lot of sausage which we likey.  All of that combined = the said huge breakfast for $18.

Our waitress challenged our friend and said that no one had ever finished the 18$ breakfast so they had a bet.  He finished the entire thing, she gave him a 25% discount on the bill....and she had no qualms about divvying up the total for each of us.  It's in Auburn (slightly out of my way) and not really worth driving out to if you're not already in the area.  I would go back if I wanted to order anything but the chicken fried steak.  The sharpness is an acquired taste that I do not wish to develop anytime soon.  Also, very busy and very loud on a Sunday morning!

Saturday- Had to run an errand in Auburn and met the parental unit for late lunch, early dinner here.
Only one other seated table inside, which I hoped meant we would get excellent service and our food would be cooked to order.
Took a gander at the menu and decided on the tempura fried mushrooms- Ma said they were the best mushrooms she'd ever had, I disagreed but they were ok. Not bad, but the bowl of 15 wasn't gone either. We asked for ranch to dip them in, and were given dishes of that nasty bottled ranch stuff from the grocery stores. The kind that squirts like ketchup.... yuck. I am a ranch-head and not all ranch is the same and that store-bought bottled stuff is nasty.
We got our starter salads, and the lettuce had wilted and brown edges and my tomato slices had moldy holes. Disgusting.
I ordered the turkey dinner, while my ma ordered the steak dinner. They arrived.. looked presentable. My ma's portions were less than appealing (the sides)... she cut into her steak and it was raw. Like, walk off the plate raw. How a chef let that leave the kitchen, I have no idea. Especially when it was ordered well. She sent it back, told them to take their time because she wanted it cooked completly... it came back.. YEP!! STILL RAW!!! Her garlic mashed potatoes were less than smooth, with large hunks of potato that seemed to have missed the mixer....
My turkey dinner came looking alright. Except where I'm sure there are lots of people out there who like large, thick slabs of turkey, I am not one of those people. The slabs of turkey were about an inch and a half thick...my potatoes had apparently done the cha-cha with the mixer as well, leaving large hunks through-out.... the dressing was very good. nice flavor. I liked that and wished there was more.... the flavor of the gravy was delicious as well. The cranberry sauce was about 5 berries in a super tiny dish.

Neither of us finished our dinners...

... I think I'll try one last time, and get breakfast... just to be sure... and then I'll update my review.

OK...we came down to Auburn in hopes of finding better food than the week before (see sunbreak cafe review).

Once again I ordered my favorite...biscuits and gravy.  You could tell the biscuits were homemade because they were HUGE and the gravy was homemade because it tasted great with lots of sausage.  the gravy was a bit thin/runny but the flavor was still there, they should put more on because of the size of the biscuit. I had to ask for jam to finish it up because I ran out of gravy.

I read that service was slow and they are correct, I also read other reviews that said they were young. That is an understatement.  I think some had to ride their bikes to work because they were too young to get a drivers license.

My wife got one of the breakfasts that came with pancakes.  what a waste! they were so big that she could only finish a quarter of it and I even had some and we still left half on the plate. maybe they should cut down on portions and bring the price down.

Coffee was definitely not weak like the sunbreak, it was strong and had a very burnt flavor ala starbucks. maybe it was starbucks, wouldn't that be funny?

We'll try some of the other stuff some other time, the rest of the menu looked pretty interesting.

I was pretty excited to try this place because one of my co-workers (B) told me he'd had a couple of great breakfasts there.  I got Mitzie H.(yes kids...  Mitzie lives!!) to accompany me, and after a traumatic  drive through West Seattle, we took the trip down to Auburn Way.

We arrived at 10:45, and who should be there, but B??!?!  Yay!!!  We sat at his table, and waited for menus (he and his girlfriend had already placed their orders)...  We waited for about ten minutes before the waitress brought us one menu (they were packed and didn't have enough to go around)...  fine.  We decided pretty quickly what we both wanted, and waited for the server to come back...  she did, asked us if we wanted anything to drink (yes, I wanted coffee and Mitzie wanted water), but then left before we could place our food order.  Okaaayyy.   B and Anah's breakfasts came (bacon waffle and sausage scramble),  and we were able to place our orders (biscuits and gravy for both of us)...  and I ordered coffee again cos my first order never appeared.  This time she wrote it down.  Sadly, the server forgot to bring B butter of maple syrup for his waffle.  He asked her for both items twice...  but never got them...  the third time he flagged her down, she said it was coming, but by then, the waffle was completely cold... he sent it back and asked for another... with the second waffle came butter and syrup. Finally.

B and Anah tried to stay long enough to see just when Mitzie and I were going to get our breakfasts, but they had stuff to do.  We finally got our food 1 hour and 1 minute after sitting at the table.  I know this, because I texted B a celebratory message.  Yay for breakfast!

Now...  the food.  It seems like perhaps our orders took so long because they were baking fresh biscuits (hey, that's cool...  but you should let your customers know the reason for delays instead of ignoring them)...  unfortunately, they should have stayed in the oven a bit longer.  They were a little doughy in the center.  Other than that, the biscuits would have been quite nice.  The gravy wasn't bad either.  While we were eating, two tables walked out without ever getting their food, and one table left without eating their food (they had waited longer than us, and their food wasn't cooked enough either).

I think this place has potential.  The portions are huge, prices are reasonable, and overall, the food looked pretty good.  For the most part, the staff looks like a bunch of high school kids that don't appear to have too much serving experience (though there was one kid that was busting his ass and doing a great job...  just not our server...bummer).  They may have been overwhelmed as the restaurant was totally full when we were there.  If they weren't so far away, I'd definitely give them another chance in a few months time to see if things have improved.

The bathrooms are a little weird ... but I like the fact that the sink is in plain view of everyone, so "poo-paws" are shamed into washing their hands.  Harr!
