Being from North Carolina, I was very excited to visit the Ogden. The museum is housed in a beautiful contemporary building near the WWII museum.

The Ogden houses a permanent collection and exhibits by Southern artists. The have done a great job at remaining true to their mission and not becoming overly regional with collection. I was very impressed by the wide range of styles and offerings. From self-taught artists from early in the 20th Century to a modern royal blue sculpture of a marlin, "Marlin Brand -O," this museum showcases how diverse the South and its artists have been and will continue to be.

There are five stories to this lovely museum dedicated to Southern Art. Well curated exhibits alternate along side their permanent collections. The website is kept current and has a nice layout. They keep their FB and Twitter info very current, too, unlike a lot museums I have found.

Southern Art should not be confused with the Regionalists of the early 20th century, who I guess, didn't like that title either. The Ogden offers up a permanent collection of paintings, prints, watercolors, photographs, ceramics, sculpture, crafts and design spanning the 18th to the 21st centuries of art from 15 Southern states and D.C.

We came in during Project 1 and received free admission because of our cool little green P1 stickers. The regular non-discounted (students, seniors, children) admission is $10.

Missed the Sally Mann exhibit though the Jorge Otero photography of a defunct local sugar mill were interesting - (I lean more towards portraiture myself)

If the weather permits, visit the outdoor area of the top floor and you'll have a wonderful view of the Pontchartrain Bridge and the Central Business District. Cameras are allowed up here.

Very nice permanent collection; the Randy Shull craft exhibit which is currently on site was excellent.
The museum seems sadly under utilized, but that contributed to our enjoyment.

Jeez, I love this place. The Sally Mann show there now knocked me on my ass. And I usually don't like an explanation with my art, but the artist/curator talk on 'death in southern art' was honestly interesting. If I lived there I'd get a membership lickety-split.

I loved the Sally Mann show. It was free the day when we came, but if we were to pay the prices were sort of steep. Good signage and a nice space.
