1 review for Ocean Star Museum
If you've ever been curious about offshore oil exploration and production, visit this museum. This museum was fun and educational; if I came alone, I could've spent several hours here poring over the exhibits. I won't spoil your pleasure by describing them in detail. There are lots of kid-oriented displays; I don't think they'd be bored at all. One mother was showing her toddler-aged boy an exhibit of an oil rig, saying "This is where your daddy works" and he was asking questions about the exhibit. Too cute!
There are also neat views of fishing boats, four or five oil rigs pulled in for maintenance, pelicans, seagulls, and other strange-looking birds around the museum area. We saw a couple of fisherman in one of the boats dumping fish into the water and lots of pelicans below snapping them up. The only thing I was disappointed in was not spotting any dolphins.
Touring this museum is mostly self-guided, either reading the many information displays, looking at the exhibits, watching videos, or listening to the audio tour. According to their website, they have these Educational Student Tours if you plan in advance: http://www.oceanstaroe.... Those are "led by museum staff," who all seem to be high school or college-aged girls, rather than oil platform workers. The staff was friendly.
This museum was easy to find. At the Northwest corner of the 20th and Harborside intersection is a group of signs pointing tourists to restaurants and attractions. Ocean Star is among them. It's east of Willie G's. Ocean Star museum is at the North end of 20th Street and Harborside, on the shore. There is a parking lot in front of it. You park, walk north to the shore, come upon a small shack-looking building which is the gift shop where you buy your tickets, and proceed through the side to the back, where the museum and oil rig are. Tickets were cheap: only $8 for adults and $5 for seniors (55+).
If for some reason that parking lot is full (which it wasn't), I saw a couple of pay parking lots around the area, including one for $5 at the Southwest corner 20th and Harborside. Harborside is only a block north of the touristy street called The Strand, so that area should be pretty safe with lots of pay parking.
