This place is now closed and their successors are also now closed.  So this review is certainly coming a bit late.  But I felt like I needed to give Ocean their just due.

When open, their food was always pretty good to me and the prices were not as high as some of these other "higher class" joints...

It's actually one Chinese restaurant I do miss having around and that's Big News!!  If anyone ever hears about the owners of Ocean re-opening anywhere, definitely send me a note and I'll be sure to check out the new spot if there ever is one....

Dim Sum = Touches the Heart.
Sum Yee = Bella's middle/Chinese name = Easy for the heart to rejoice

Since dim sum is literally my middle name, I take it to heart. Yes, that was cheesy. I sum dim sum. Yes, that was also cheesy- I think I'm giving my lactard ass a tummy ache with all this cheese.

I met up with a few Yelpers on Sunday, after B2B and was expecting really GREAT dim sum. This is my 'hood- I grew up 3 blocks away. This was one of my family's dim sum hangouts growing up, so I have expectations.

What I didn't expect is a piece of HAIR (long and black) INSIDE my ha gow. Instant loss of appetite.

Plus, the chicken feet were too hard and crunchy (saung)- it wasn't cooked long enough.

Mediocre dim sum. With Good luck dim sum and Wing Lee dim sum in a 2/3 block radius, I expect Ocean Restaurant to step up their dim sum game.

Ok, I need to throw up now. Not because I'm in my anorexic mode again, but because I have the hairy ha gow permanently etched in my brain.

    BLECH!!!

    Hong Kong style comfort food.

The stars converged in a peculiar pattern tonight, and we found ourselves sans kitchen but with car.  Choosing a  restaurant consisted of driving around until we found an open parking space, and then looking for something Chinese in the vicinity.  Margaret recognized the Ocean Restaurant, so we entered a nearly empty dining room at 7 pm on a Wednesday.

We ordered West Lake beef soup, sweet & sour pork, sauteed prawns with double mushrooms, and the house special fried rice for $30 + tip.  Margaret's appraisal was, "This is all yummy!"  I had to agree.  Mild food, cooked well, served quickly and pleasantly.  The tea, a surprise dessert, and of course fortune cookies, all were free.

Full, but not overstuffed, we exited at 7:45 pm with leftovers in a box for tomorrow's lunch.  As usual, the restaurant was full when we left.  This happens more often than not!

Kind of relieved that they're closed.  Hope it gets better!

    Food was okay.
    Service was terrible.
The tables were not clean...nor the floors.
I ate here for sit-down three times.
I usually did their take-out dim sum items.

Went here for dim sum today.  Pretty good.

Things I liked; you get a menu list of all the dim sum options (and there are plenty) and write down how many you want from the list - very much like ordering from a sushi menu.  Instead of the push carts that come by, they just bring you what you ordered and put them all on the large lazy susan in the middle of the table.  I like this better because this way I got exactly what I wanted and didn't have to wait for the pushcart to bring something new by in hopes it would be something I wanted.  Also, I can never understand what the people with the pushcarts are saying.  When they brought each dish to the table, they marked it on the menu so we would know what it was.

Everything was mostly tasty; I wasn't too impressed with the deep fried white rice fish and that was the one dish on our table that didn't get devoured.  The shrimp balls were huge and very good texture.  Steamed buns, dumplings, etc ... all good.  All in all good, fast service and a nice selection.  We didn't have to wait too long - only 10 minutes - and it was 11:30 AM on Sunday.

    Recommended.

    COCKROACH. IN DUMPLING.

If I could rate zero stars I would.  Everything was going great - ordered a bunch of dim sum dishes at $2.50 a piece and enjoyed each one.  Got down to our last dumpling dish and {see first line of review}!!!

Our waitress said she was sorry and next time they'd make sure it wouldn't happen.  HUH??? What next time???

I woke up on that Friday morning with some what's_his_face_left_from_Thursday, and a 10:30am work appointment in San Jose, hangover and dazed.  San Jose's meeting was yet another disappointment, why do I end up kissing frogs vis a vis work and men?  Hangover and in need of food food food!  ... I SMS/text my plus_one friend on the way back to the city.

    a: ... dimsum?

am:  just had breakfast, what did you have in mind?

a:  Ocean? you Yelped it ... I'm craving for dimsum

am:  I'll meet you there !

Oh what a joy to be pampered with plates of dimsum when nursing a terrible hangover while trying to forget the aftermath of a bad connection in work and at play.  We shared the jellyfish and octopus, a siu mai dish, a nice plate of small ribs, the dried scallop soup that was orgasmic, soft fried tofu, ...  all for $15.00 each.  Service does not come with a smile, but they get the job done.  I like this place, it is divey, it is good, it is cheap, and indeed sumptuous.

Best of all, I spent a nice lunch hour with my plus_one kindred spirit.  It's always refreshing to indulge in dimsum and an intelligent conversation with a thinking buddy, after a night of bacchallian waywardness.  Dimsum, discussion on books, and a kindred soul, a nice antidote to the viccissitudes of life.

This is my favorite Chinese place to eat when I am out in this part of San Francisco. This is usually where I go to eat Chinese food when I am in the city-- I don't bother with Chinatown. The only problem is parking sucks.

I haven't been here for dim sum but I have a friend who loves steamed fish so whenever he's in town we go here and get a whole steamed fish and then a huge platter of vegetables with mixed mushrooms.  The vegetable dish is beautiful-- they ring vegetables around the outside of an oval platter and then these mushrooms are piled up in the center. The shitake are large and plump and good quality, plus there are other mushrooms like large straw and button mushrooms. I don't know if it is cooked using chicken broth or not so I don't know if it totally vegetarian, but if you love well-prepared vegetables this is a good dish and it looks beautiful. Two of us can get a whole fish and this huge vegetable dish and get out of there for about $25 total.

The steamed pork buns are FANTASTIC. We also really enjoyed the garlic ribs, fried bead curd sheet, potstickers, eggrolls.......and so much more.

    VALUE VALUE VALUE.

My wife and I arrived at 10:45am on a Sunday morning and were promptly seated. We both looked at each other and thought, this place is a real "hole in the wall"  We ordered 6 items from the dim sum menu.
    Our order consisted of :

Shrimp dumpling - very big and pretty darn good
Pork dumpling - very big and very good
BBQ pork buns - these were delicious too
Taro cake - (my wife got these and she said it was very good)
Steamed pork spare ribs - SOOOO delicious. probably the best I have eaten.
Steamed Chicken feet - delicious. (not for the faint of stomachs)

The size of the shrimp dumplings and pork dumplings were HUMUNGUS. I kid you not. They were double the size we were use to getting in San Jose.  Dont order with your stomachs because you will be taking alot of togo items like we did.

Our bill came out to $21. We were shocked at the bill. What a great value. THe food was very good and inexpensive too.

The one bad thing about this area is the parking. Being from out of town we had the hardest time finding a parking spot. Finally after 4 passes around the block we found a spot barely fitting the wife;s Honda Accord.

We really liked this "hole in the wall" and would definately come back to try their lunch specials next time.

Yummy dim sum, cheap, and clean!!

Like any other dim sum place, you'll have to stand in line on weekends. So we went into Good Luck dim sum to get some food so our stomachs don't sing too loud, while waiting to be called on the wait list.

I wouldn't be able to tell you which place is better food-wise, because they were both pretty good. The only thing that Ocean beats Good luck is that, the food is steaming hot when it came to our table. It's relatively cheap considering being a much nicer and cleaner looking restaurant than many others. We got like 7 dishes, so much that we couldn't possibly finish, for only $26.00 including tax/tips.

The dim sum here is relatively cheap and it's good.  Depending on what day you go and what time of day, there could be no wait whatsoever or there could be a long wait.  Our most recent trip was this past Saturday after we went to the Health Fair at Kaiser's French Campus.

Now, my 3yo nephew does not like to eat much.  Other than fruit, or chicken drumsticks.  But bring him for some dim sum and he's non-stop eating!

We ordered WAY too much food, but that was fine since we just packed up the rest to give to my brother-in-law to eat.

And it was actually a very eventful meal.  We were interrupted when an ambulance and fire truck arrived and all these emergency personnel with stretchers came in the restaurant because an elderly man a couple tables back had passed out or something.  He was eating lunch with his family, but he was just sitting there in his chair looking like he was sleeping.  Except they couldn't wake him up.  He was just OUT.  So they had to call 9-1-1 and he was taken to the hospital.  Really made the meal quite exciting.  My nephew couldn't take his eyes off the firemen.  He kept saying the firemen were trying to be doctors.  Hopefully the man is okay.

Nothing exciting or super creative - just really good dim sum basics at a cheap price.  I went with my ABC cousins and we were all really happy with the meal.  No carts, just order off the menu.  I think the meal avg was $8/person and we stuffed ourselves.

I think this place is just as good and worth going to as Yank Sing although they have different approaches and different clientele.

Caveats: I'm from the South Bay and am not very familiar with dim sum venues up in the city. I'm also recently returned from a trip back to the motherland (Taiwan) where the food is fresh and oh-so-delicious.

Came here yesterday with a friend from out of town, anticipating good dimsum, based on the opinions of my fellow Yelpers. My friend and I ordered a large spread, since we were both starving... dishes included:
    1. standard chicken feet
    2. fried turnip cake
    3. beef  "chang fen"
    4. chinese broccoli in oyster sauce
    5. xian2 shui3 jiao3 (lit. "salty dumpling")
    6. shark's fin dumplings
    7. pork shu mai
    8. some "chang fen" type dish with bitter melon (forgot the name)
    9. cha shao bao
    10. spare ribs

Of the ten dishes, the standouts were the chicken feet, the turnip cake and the cha shao bao. The beef chang fen and the bitter melon chang fen were ok. We were both disappointed by the chinese broccoli, the xian shui jiao, the shark's fin dumplings, the shu mai and the spare ribs. Some of the ingredients didn't taste fresh and/or there was a rancid flavor to them.

Granted, my friend and I are both Taiwanese, so maybe our tastes/expectations are different. Or maybe we just ordered poorly. We left a lot of leftovers on the table and walked away disappointed. Don't plan on coming back.

I have an ongoing argument with my chinese friends whether or not this is the best or only the second best place in the city to get affordable dim sum (I think gold mountain in chinatown is ever so slightly better).

Give it a try and you decide who's right.

Twin lobster for $19.99! Good deal! So what if the lobsters are a bit small, at least you know they're fresh by the looks of the fish tank in front of the restaurant. That's two lobsters for 20 bucks!! Tastes yum yum yum...

Other dishes were pretty decent too, and good value. If I live in the area I would go every day, just for the lobsters.

I have been here a couple of times and each time was just as good as the last.  The food here is good, fresh and the staff is very friendly.

Now with that being said, my only complaint would be about the Kung Pao chicken.  It lacked the Kung and the Pao was now where in sight.  I like my food spicy and this was far from it.  In fact it was far from everything.  I was severed with what appeared to be the left over parts of the chicken. You know the tough gross stuff that no one in their right mind would eat on purpose, a pile of slightly cooked veggies, and to top it off tow fist full of peanuts.  I mean this thing looked and tasted disgusting.   For whatever reason I forced myself to try and eat this thing but just couldn't do it.  I ended up tossing it after 10 minutes of closing my eyes and telling my mouth to chew.

This actually surprised me because all of the other times there the food was great.  The pot stickers are great, the Mongolian beef is tender and spicy with the just the perfect amount of onions, and the General Tso's chicken is the bomb!

I would definitely go back again but next time I will go a bit wiser.  Avoid the Kung Pao unless you like the feeling of chewing on a chicken's ass!

Interestingly, the owners/building permit applicants have Chinese names, not Vietnamese ones.

The two-lobster deal is now down to $19.99. Go figure.

    UPDATE: 5.9.07

The two-lobster deal is now $39. I'm stunned.

    UPDATE: 3.1.07

The two-lobster deal is now about $28. Who said there wasn't inflation???

    Original:

This being my first yelp review, I thought the humble honor ought to go to this gem of a neighborhood restaurant I've been frequenting for twelve years - that's right,  1-2. I somewhat reluctantly write this for fear of enduring even longer lines during dim sum rush hour on weekends. But if I have to write a first review, let it be of... Ocean.

First off, the quality to price ratio is excellent. Where else in the city can one find two (that's right... 2) lobsters for $18.88 (this is after all a Chinese restaurant... take note of the restaurant's phone number)!!! The dish is served in a delectable ginger and scallion sauce. My favorite Hong Kong-style crispy noodles is about $7. (Tip: ask for the sauce to be served separate from the noodles so you can temper the desired level of crispness of the noodles on your plate). The average tab for a meal for two consisting of three entrees with tea, rice, and a couple of sodas comes to about $28.

Second, the dim sum is unbelievably tasty and fresh. Unlike most dim sum joints which cart out unpredictable dishes from the kitchen, at Ocean a checklist is provided and diners can mark their choices and the selections are made to order and brought to the table. Favorites: salt + pepper octopus (lightly battered and deep fried, served with scallions and small slices of chili pepper; ask for red rice vinegar for dipping), deep fried tofu with shrimp (delicately fried but ethereally moist on the inside and served with a light soy dipping sauce), roast duck (crisp skin and flavorful with hints of anise, served with a plum sauce which I don't much care for), and a dried scallop soup (actually an egg-sized dumpling filled with dried scallops in a bowl of delicate broth peppered with chopped scallions; red rice vinegar to add into the soup is served separately). Obviously, I'm partial to things fried but their steamed selections are pretty solid as well - including the ubiquitous pork (siu mai) and shrimp-and-leek/cilantro dumplings. Their flat rice noodles (served in a light and slightly sweet soy sauce) stuffed with mushrooms and chives deserve special mention. (I could go on and on but there isn't enough space!) Prices range from $2.20 for your basic three pieces of siu mai to $4.75 for the more elaborate selections (such as the dried scallop soup). Dim sum off the regular list is served until 3pm daily. A separate checklist with a limited range is available from 5pm onwards as part of their 'happy hour' offer (don't ask me why).

Bring a group of friends who enjoy digging in and who appreciate authoritative, yet unpretentious, Cantonese cuisine. Just don't ask for beef with broccoli or sweet and sour anything! (But I have to say their Peking Spareribs, which is sweet and sour sauce based, is damn good...)

On a good week, I eat here twice. I then walk across the street to possibly the best pan-Asian supermarket within city limits, New May Wah, and load up on esoteric groceries or walk down the street to Green Apple where their selection of books is as stellar as the food is at Ocean. It doesn't get much better than this.

FAIR WARNING: Service is spotty. Staff is very friendly but somewhat flustered. Be patient, adventurous, and have fun!

One more thing: They're closed on Tuesdays. (Why do I keep coming when I should know better???? I seem to crave Chinese food on Tuesdays.... But there's always 'Happy Garden' across the street and a block down, on Clement between 9th and 10th - also good dim sum, if a bit heavy-handedly done. All the deep fried stuff's good - octopus, tofu/bean curd with shrimp, chicken wings....)

Extremely cheap, filling, decent dim sum. Defenitely no gourmet shit here, but it's the only dim sum that I've had that hasn't made me feel sick afterwards. And it's a restaurant, too, not a greasy bakery. You won't leave this joint with the lingering smell of oil. Loved the sweet sesame dumpling & extremely fatty roast duck.  99% of the diners in here were Chinese, which is always a good sign.

If you're on a reverse diet, Ocean Restaurant is the place for you. Not because the food is greasy or gross; no, quite the opposite... because the dim sum is killer and amazingly cheap - you will eat so much you will have scallion pancakes growing out of your ears. Well worth it.

If you can guess the total of your check, the waiter says you can get your meal for free. I've never been so lucky with my guess-timation. The dim sum here is fresh and tasty. The menu is really well rounded. They have the basics things I order (pork bun, sesame ball, sticky rice, har-gow, shu-mai, leek dumplings), plus new things I try each time I'm there, and full scale entrees.

After eating here, we decided to break up with our default dim sum place on Clement, Happy Garden. Everything we had was good: chinese broccoli, deepfried tofu stuffed with shrimp, pork shumai, crispy shrimp balls, fried meat dumpling, and steamed bbq pork buns. I realize that these items are the more traditional/common dim sum stuff, but I judge a dim sum place based on how good they prepare these. (You can't run a dim sum joint if you can't make good shumai!) Prices are very good.

The prices are a steal too.  I usually don't like going out to eat chinese food when I can have great home cooking from my mom, but this place is just as good.

I don't know what happen to this place but it's gone the drain recently.  They used to have a waiter/waitress, both appear to be in the mid to late 30's.  Really poor attitude and horrible customer service.  Appears the restaurant wised up and got rid of them.

Anyway, had dim sum with some friends over the weekend and we all came out wondering what the heck happen to the restaurant.   The short chubby guy with the glasses is no longer there.  It appears the wife (owner) has her daughter working there.    She is ok looking with a nice ass &  I'll bang the shit out of her if she offered. haha

Anyway, back to the dim sum.  Don't know what the hell happen but the portions were SMALL.  I don't ever remembering it being so small.  We spend our usual and all worked out wondering did they decided to cut down on portions or what?   Food was ok, not great but ok but the portions leave a lot be desired.  There are a lot of better places out on Geary & Clement for Dim Sum.  We defintely won't be coming back for a while.

Consistent and reasonably priced dim sum offerings.  The test is always the shrimp rice rolls and they are always good here.

Definitely good, cheap, dim sum. They seated us pretty quickly and we proceeded to devour loads and loads of food. There are so many different dim sum restaurants around the Richmond area that I think the quality of this one is a little higher than others I've tried. It's definitely more worth it than an overpriced place like Ton Kiang or having to go all the way to Daly City or...of course LA to have some quality dim sum. This is just goood if you are craving it. Food also came pretty quickly and the service wasn't bad. I will be coming back.

Decent dimsum: shiu mai, pork ribs and 3 different combinations of steamed shrimp and vegetables

I thought they kinda skimmed on the jok/jook/porridge (on the pork and preserved eggs) and the lobster over noodles (sadly on the lobster). Still the $20 twin lobsters deal could be a steal

Also had very standard dou miu (snow peas) with garlic

I don't usually care for service or ambiance at these places but it was kinda bad, the tables are too close to each other. They did sit me by the kitchen, that table is half blocking that entrance.  They also kept using my table to stack plates for service to others, quit that. I think prices are good though I didn't pay

Because of the proximity to the toilet, I kept thinking people walking out of there (and kitchen area) worked in the restaurant, so for once I think uniforms (or just a vest) would be good

More bitching: they have a bunch of big tables so if you're not a party of 8, prepare to share one or wait

The best part may have been walking over to Genki for some crepes

Mayflower is a bit of a ways out there but it's better http://www.yelp.com/bi...
I have to try more dimsum on Clement

Nice little quiet place in the city.  They have some specials going on when we visited.  2 lobsters for 19.99, salt and pepper crab for 19.99, and lobster noodles for 13.99.  Those are pretty good deals!  The best dish we had were the salt and pepper crab, it was a whole crab, a little bit small but it was good for 2.  The 2 lobsters were a little bit small too, but it was done with Chinese flavoring and it was very delicious.  It was a great hearty meal, and I would definitely go back for the salt and pepper crab and ask them for a bigger crab next time.

I love this restaurant!  It's a nice, decently-priced place to get a great Cantonese homestyle cooked meal.  The staff is super-friendly and very attentive.  I don't go too often, but the owner and waitresses still recognize me and often give me free soup and dessert with my meals.

excellent place to get authentic dim sum for a dirt cheap price.  all the dim sum is great and make sure to get the lobster yi mien (noodles with lobster).  four stars since the service wavers depending who is assisting your table.

decent 3.5 star non-cart dim sum--i like eating in richmond/sunset rather than chinatown.

my 2 friends and i stuffed ourselves on dim sum for $11 each! almost everything we got was good. not the best i've had, but certainly not the worst, and we were all satisfied with our meals overall. i'd probably go back if i were in the area. we went on a monday at noon and there was no wait, although by the time we left at 1 it was a lot more crowded. two caveats: 1) they charge $0.50/person for tea, and 2) they don't have certain items during the weekday, such as the egg custard tart and baked bbq pork buns (but they do have steamed bbq pork buns).
