5 reviews for Ocean City Buffet
3.5 - Not a bad option if you're hungry and just wanna get the job done. Lots of Chinese food + some basic sushi rolls, and on the weekends they increase the price from $9 to $13 but add snow crab, shrimp, and sashimi. It's a very clean establishment, and I even was adventurous enough to try the sushi, which was fine. It's not gonna replace the 3 Japanese restaurants within a few blocks, but if you're looking for a sushi fix it can be had here.
By buffet standards, it was above average. I would gone 4, but the iced tea was watery and it was disappointing to find no ice cream for desert :(
You cannot find a better deal in town.
I've had dinner here at least 20 times, and I've never been disappointed. The shrimp are always a good size and fresh, and they serve them several different ways: Honey walnut, stir fry, spicy & salted, and chilled. The sushi is also always fresh, made in small quantities by a chef right in front of your eyes. Service is always friendly, and beverages are included. Great crab and spring rolls, too.
I will definitely continue to frequent Ocean City, and cannot say enough good things about the value here.
Walking around Santa Cruz around dinner time my friends and I found this buffet restaurant. The price is 11.95 + tax which includes dinner and drinks. They have quite a selection and replace the food containers with freshly made food about every 15 mins or so. They have a sushi bar, crab legs, seafood bar, pastries, salad/fruit bar and entrees. The food was good, the service was great and it was a packed house last night. I give them kuddos for playing The Hot Chick movie with Rob Schneider. So yummy food, great service and a crazy funny movie oh yeah, I'm fan. .
Let me first add, I've been to over 20 different types of buffets, so I have the right judgments to how a buffet should be like. As always, I'll be very fair in my review.
One star for the family owned/run restaurant. I love these types, because they really put a lot of effort into their business, not saying bigger corporations don't, but you get what I'm saying. Another star for the variety of food. There was quite a variety of food, ranging from chow mien, chow fun, honey shrimp, tempura, sweet and sour soup, sushi, etc. If you're a UCSC student you get 1 dollar off I believe. It's not the best price yet, Hokkaido in San Mateo has 4x the variety for 10.99.
I worked at a Japanese restaurant for 10 years, and currently ranked one of the best in the county. Therefore, I have the knowledge to judge the sushi. The fish was so thinly sliced it was almost transparent. Just because it's a buffet, doesn't mean you slice the pieces smaller. I didn't want to try it, because I can judge the freshness just looking at it. However, the rolls are actually very decent. It's definitely worth a try (they don't starch it up like other restaurants to make you full).
I really like Mongolian beef; however, there beef wasn't really edible. I had to spit it out almost half the time, because the meat was too chewy.
Above all, you should be the judge, I would definitely revisit if my friends were to go. However, with my standards in buffets, I wouldn't really recommend it.
Went with family the day before Thanksgiving and were pleasantly surprised by the quality. Two ordered from the lunch special menu, which was really cheap. The owner kept coming over to offer them little extras, like egg rolls or sesame balls, free, what a nice touch ! The rest tried the buffet and loved it. The food has integrity and flavor. It's not all gucked up with the same thick sauce that would make every stirfry taste the same. The vegetables are fresh and not limp. The sushi has got to be the bargain of the year, included in the price of the buffet, and made right before your eyes by the sushi chef. I don't even like sushi, but I enjoyed trying a few small slices.
Follow the advice of the first reviewer: don't pile too much on your plate. It would be a shame to muddle up these tasty items when the owners have taken care to make them distinctive.
The buffet is not the cheapest lunch in town (we paid $8.99 for lunch), but seems worth it considering the food.
