I feel it's a little inaccurate for me to review OB's dog beach. Afterall, I'm human. Let's consult the four-legged furry afrofro-ed creature sitting to my right.
Introducing Tico: the "not so bright, but always happy, unusually large for his breed Cockapoo", or, as what we now find ourselves describing him as, just simply, the "Doodle".
{Alright Tico, TALK!}
So many smells. So many friends. Ooh that's a little one. |s it a dog? Sniff. Sniff some more. So much beach. Run and run and run and oooh now SWIM! Swim and swim and swim and, wait a minute ... a green bouncy ball just flew by my snouzer. Must. Get. Ball. Must. Get. Ball. Agh, who's humping me?! Not okay! Back to the water. Swim, swim, swim..... Uh oh salt water in the tummy. Ouch. Poop. Poop. Mark territory, everywhere. Run. Swim. Ball. And Repeat, for as long as my human friend will let me. I want to live here, where fences don't exist, where balls are endless, and I can smell all the asses I want. This is the life for me, a San Diego Doodle.

The pros of this beach:
- Off leash
- Two water areas. One with waves and one with calmer waters (nice for first timers who have never been in the ocean before)
- Large area with plenty of room to run and play
The cons:
- People were not very good about picking up after their dogs (I witnessed a couple poop in the water), and those who do leave their poop bags everywhere.
- You actually have to leave the beach to get any kind of water, so make sure you bring a water bottle or two full of fresh water
- Some of the people who come here don't seem to have a lot of control over their dogs (a big fight with a injured dog took place while I was there)
This is the first dog beach I've gone to so I can't compare it to any of teh others. It's nice, but I doubt it is the best.
I came across this beach while riding the bike path from Hotel Circle to the beach.
I think it's great to have a place to let your dogs run, but I couldn't stand the smell of the feces and urine while passing by this stretch of beach.
My gf just got a dog, and I hope she doesn't take her here.

Good, fun park but doesn't quite compare to the Coronado dog beach. I do like the little river for teaching my dog to swim. It's fine.
My dog pooped in the Jetty yesterday. :(
The Surfrider Foundation might kick me out for that. There were a few people who watched him drop a deuce right in the shallow water and all of them walked away to make sure it didn't hit their dogs in the eye. If you came to learn of the new brown spot on your dogs eye, that was my fault.
I walked away into the famous hall of shame. I still love OB dog beach, but I can't say that she loves me back until further notice.

I love this beach! We took our dog here for his second birthday and he just loved it. There were a good amount of people and dogs there, which was expected being that it was a Saturday. There were plenty of dogs in different shapes and sizes and they all seemed to play well together.
The beach itsef was fairly clean with the exception of the big steaming pile of dog $hit that I stepped on with my bare feet. I didn't really let it bother me, just walked on the water and washed it away. The beach also has a nice big area of just sand so the bigger dogs can run around and play fetch. I would definitely come back to this beach!
I've been here several times and love it. The shore is kinda short and small but there's a huge sandy area if you like to play ball with your pup. There's this area where the "river" leads to the ocean. On a calm day it's pretty nice to throw the ball in the water to let your dog go swim after it without fear of being sweep out to sea. However, on a day where the current is strong, it'll sweep you/ball/whoever away pretty quick if you're not paying attention. A swirly pool sucked me into it and I almost got carried away. I didn't know how to swim either but I did get pushed by to the shore enough for me to stand up. If you go farther out from the shore to the rocks that separate the "river," it gets like 7ft deep says the people swimming out that far. So just becareful in the "river" part of the beach. Sorry for all the layman talk. I have no clue what they're called. lol.
I'm not sure if low/high tide had to do with how calm it is or not but I went to day and the waves were really calm. The one thing I like about OB DB is that when it's calm and low(i'm assuming it's low by the sand looked), the shore actually goes out pretty far with the water being ankle deep. I was at the bend where DB leads to the "river." I was amazed as to how far the shore went out. I saw some guy standing maybe a block or block and a half out into the ocean with the water still being ankle high. I thought that was awesome imo. It means my chihuahua/min pin can play in the water without having waves crash on his head every few seconds.
The bad is that there's tons of seaweed laying around. You'll see shit tons of flies on it. IMO I don't think the beach is as clean as it could be in regards to the shore and water quality. If your dog shits on the shoreline, its a long walk to a trashcan. Becareful of dog diarrhea too. I got a nice view of my dog squirting out a good amount of diarrhea probably from fetching the ball from the seawater. But I guess that would happen at any beach. It is also a long walk to the bathroom. Apparently, you're not allowed to take your dog(even on lease) to the "people" side of the beach where the bathroom is located according to signs.
I haven't had any poop step mishaps. I just stick to the water. For the most part my lil pup gets along. He does like to bark and run at other dogs because he gets excited. This did lead to him getting bit at once where he yelp for like 5 seconds and was back to normal. But still watch your dogs please.
Overall, I have more fun than not at this beach.

This place is nothing but fun!!!
I really enjoy bringing my dogs here, mostly because I love to see them run free with so much open space.
What a relaxing way to spend an afternoon or lazy Sunday.
I've found that parking and traffic can be somewhat of an issue, so I always go around 10ish on the weekends, and never have problems finding parking in the lot.
Here you will find all kinds of dogs from tiny to huge, and that should describe the owners' attitudes. I've had no personal encounters of my own but have seen people go at it. With so many personality types I guess it's unavoidable sometimes.
One thing I really don't like is the fact that more often then not I don't see owners pick up after their doggies here, specially when they happen to go right on the rim of the water. I guess they feel it'll just get swept away and it's all good.
It's honestly really disgusting and disrespectful to others!
Have fun, and bring your poop bags please!

Not nearly as good as it used to be. I'm a fifth generation San Diegan, third generation Ocean Beach resident and can say that with certainty. Not only is it way too dirty thanks to people not picking up after their dog(s), and themselves for that matter, but the dogs are very territorial here, and tend to go overboard on their pack instinct and pick on other dogs waaay too much (especially if the victim dog takes off running, or shows signs of discomfort).. God forbid you have a young dog that doesn't know any better than to be social with the wrong dog(s) there.. It can get really, REALLY ugly.
The big problem with this is a lot of the owners don't think it's a big deal, try pulling the "we are here all the time, so you are in the wrong, pal" crap and can be all around dbags about it. I have seen dozens of dogs get majorly injured here (I've seen a couple not make it while with one of my various pets at Sunset Cliffs Animal Hospital) and to me.. That makes this place just not worth the while anymore.
i'm a big fan of the beach in general, but especially love this beach because i can take my 10-month old beagle (her name is Early) to this spot and she enjoys it every time. she enjoys all the other dogs more than getting in the ocean, but hey.. i like the ocean, she likes the dogs = we're good to go.
each time that i've been here (almost every sunday this past summer), i haven't had any trouble finding any parking... except for the weekend of the ob street fair. other than that, parking is easily accessible and not too far a walk from the spot me and early enjoy the most. all the other dogs are fun and enjoy being around each other, and the dog owners are pretty chill too. everyone seems to be pretty courteous. it's never too crowded, always full of families, and there's plenty of room for early to run up and down the beach.. and for me to chase after her. now if only i could get her to come back to me on my first command. ha!
i will continue to visit this dog beach and definitely recommend it to any dog lovers/owners.

Don't go in the water and look out for land mines.
If you are a dog owner or have a roommate with a dog (as I do), you should bring that canine here.

I soo did not like this dog beach! It is ghetto...bunch of crack heads walking around near the park and volleyball courts. Do not recommend! Plus, very hard to find parking.
If you want to go to a nice, fun and clean dog beach go to Del Mar!

I love going to this beach with my dog! He is finally swimming (though only in the canal) an he loves to run and run and run.
So why three stars? The people. Most of the time the people are great, friendly, not angry when my one-year-old lab steals their ball.... The ones I don't like are the ones who leave food unattended. Really? It's a DOG BEACH. I understand hanging at the beach with the friends and fam, that is cool.... but stop leaving your food unattended where there are hungry dogs on the loose!
otherwise, I love this beach and so does my dog.
I'm a fan of Coronado dog beach over this one! It's way too crowded which leads to dog scuffles, and you'll frequently find poo under your shoe!

This beach was great for my dogs and family. The ocean was clear, the sand was pristine, the dogs were friendly (except my hot tempered Weimaraner), and there was lots of room to spread out. I have visited several dog beaches in So Cal, and this one is the best. Also, it looks like a great surfing spot, especially for amateurs.
:-\
I love a beach where the dogs rule..
Unfortunately you often get owners who don't know what dog training is about. Most people are responsible but too often than not, you get some people showing up with their aggressive dogs and its all fun until your dogs been eaten.. I'd have to say I was impressed initially, but no longer go there. Unless you don't mind the once in a while out of control pitbull or the owner who thinks burying poop under 2 inches of sand is better than picking it up and tossing it, you might want to skip this beach on a busy day.
I'm giving this place 2 woofs and I literally POOPED on it.

Kudos to any public area that allow pups to run free. But this particular dog park is crowded and dirty. I'm sure it's fabulous for OB dog owners, but when making the drive from the east county I prefer Coronado or Balboa Park.

I wonder sometimes. About people. Life. Humanity. Dogs even.
Sometimes while sitting on http://Yelp.com and wonder why Yelpers would spend their time reviewing non-businesses.
Why give a beach a bad review? Do you think thats going to be a deterrent for Suzy Q. and her wild pack of family dogs to hop in the van and head on down here.
This is a beach. There are dogs. I want to dress up like the Easter Bunny in a Santa costume or maybe more like Santo with the Leuchadore mask and then try and get bit and then file lawsuits. But then once I win all the money from them after countless hours of hearings, lawyer meetings, and eating terrible courtroom vending products. I will just give it back.
They will ask me why?
I will reply:
I just wasted your time like Yelpers wasted mine by writing dumb reviews of a dog beach.
LARGE dog beach can walk around for hours. Great if you wanna get away from everyone and play with your dog at the beach!
Plus there are bonfire pits near by so you can have a nice day and night at the beach!
Our little babies love OB dog beach. We're there at least once a week. There's been one minor problem with a new dog owner not understanding how dogs interact, but we don't let the occasional ignorant person ruin our time there. The dogs favorite thing is when it's low tide and they can go out on the little sand bar next to the jetty. They get so excited at the mention of going...
I love to take my little pom here. Most of the people are good about picking up, and most of the dogs seem to be well-behaved - I've only seen a couple of fights here. Once in a while we encounter a big dog who is too intrusive for my little guy's taste, but most of the people are attentive and make them back off. He has also met some other little dogs and big ones to sniff and play with. If EVERYONE would be responsible and pick up after and manage their dogs it would be perfect. It's so nice to be able to go to the beach knowing my doggy is welcome.
This is a great place to take Rocket, my 4-1/2-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. He has a great time running with the other dogs and looking for other people's food. Sometimes people forget to pick up after their dogs, or maybe they just don't see it happen, but overall the beach is not too dirty. Since Rocket is a little dog (with a big attitude), I was concerned about big, aggressive dogs, but that hasn't been a problem. Most of the dogs are nice and play well with others. Lots of the big dogs are really into their own people and just play with them.
This is Sid's favorite place in the whole world!! We love this place SO much. Tons of dogs for Sid to chase and play with and lots of really nice owners for us to talk to. We try to come here as much as possible. I really feel that it is the perfect environment for a doggy! Plus I feel that it is always really clean and very rarely do owners not pick up after their dogs :)
5 BIG STARS!

The good: This beach is leash free.
The bad: It's dirty. It's leash free and dog owners don't take responsibility over their dogs.
One time I was here with a friend and her two dogs and we got lunches packed for a picnic on the beach. A big, scary rottweiler dog came up to us and stole our food, while our little dogs tried to defend us. Pretty much, this beach is dangerous for small dogs while bigger dogs roam around bullying smaller dogs. The owner was no where to be found, and our lunches were in the sand and half eaten by the dog. We left.
This was obviously a very poor experience at dog beach, so I don't recommend coming here unless you know the possible consequences.
There are also lots of homeless people here asking for change and whatnot. It's Ocean Beach, pretty much the trashiest beach in San Diego, I think--basically because people don't give a fuck.
"The bums lost Mr. Lebowski." Not true.. they are winners in OB.

I'm a dog-sitter, so I spend a lot of time walking dogs. This is my favorite place in San Diego to take dogs, regardless of where I'm staying. I sit for a lot of dogs in Scripps Ranch, and still make the drive to OB. I like that there is a large expanse to walk and play, and most of the other dogs and people there are friendly. Of the gazillion times I've been to OB, I only once encountered a problem with an unfriendly animal. The area is larger than the little rectangle in Coronado, and it's leash free all year versus Del Mar is only off leash in winter months. I am so thankful for Dog Beach! One star deduction for the creepy fishermen that are sometimes there, and because the water is often polluted.
I LOVE DOG BEACH !!!!!!! We have a miniature schnauzer and we going every every every morning ! This is a huge place to play with dog , not really dirty because owners usually pick up .
I love OB Dog Beach. Get there early on the weekends though, because it fills up! My rotty loves it there and I love it because it tires him out. I really haven't had any problems when I've gone. People who are there seem cool. I think a couple more garbage cans would be helpful to dispose of the poopie bags...but then again that may take away from the scenary. All in all a good time for the 2 and 4 legged beach-goers!
Took my MinPin Tino here last weekend for the first time. I was a little hesitant because he's use to hanging out with small dogs at the dog park we go to (it's separated by small or big dogs).
He just amazed me! He had the best time running here and there. Being really friendly with everyone! Even a huge Great Dane came by and he completely held his composure. I kick myself for not getting a picture!
Hard to imagine, but Tino is the smallest dog - I believe it because people are always telling me. He's just under 3 lbs and inches off the ground. So it was pretty cool seeing him meet so many great dogs and people and not get freaked out.
The beach was clean, the water was perfect and the weather couldn't be better. It was a great experience for both of us and we will definitely come back. I couldn't imagine a better place for a dog and their owner to hang out!
I come here once or twice a week with my pitbull. He loves it here. I think it's a beautiful beach with lots and lots of room to train your dog. We're trying to get him to play fetch. It is a bit crowded by the water but we like to walk to the end towards the bridge and back. He did get attacked by one dog once. I don't understand how people can bring a dog that they know don't get along with other dogs to this beach, but other than that definatly a fun beach for your pup!

Does it smell like pee? yes.
If you frequent it often enough will you one day step in poo? shit happens.
Is it sometimes necessary to disinfect not only your dog, but yourself as well with a not-so-diluted mixture of hydrogen peroxide and H2O after a prolonged visit? certainly.
Is it worth the joy your buddy gets out of a few romps in the waves... followed by the hours of silence you get as he passes out on the floor for the rest of the day? bet your ass.

Being from Minnesota, I had never heard of a dog beach. I was absolutely amazed. It was dog heaven. People were very friendly and no one got upset when my dog stole their dog's ball. It was a lot more laid back then I thought. People were very open with their pets. I am nervous about pit bulls but was able to avoid any encounters. I met a few cool people and some great dogs.
It is dirty, but could be much worse. Both the dog and I needed a good bath when we left.
Very disappointed. Too much dog mess in the sand...watch your step!! Kinda a "ruff" crowd...My vote is for Coronado or Balboa!
5 stars for Dog Beach!
Aww... I don't even have a dog but I love love LOVE to go and play with other peoples' puppies. Hopefully one day I'll be playing with a mid to large sized fluffy dog and its owner and I will fall madly in love... haha.
ANYway. The parking here, it is always difficult to find a good spot just like anywhere else, I guess, in the summer at the beach. However, once you get parked and get to where all the dogs are, there's nothing to worry about. People pick up their dog's poo which is AWEsome. ha. And... pretty much I have never met a mean dog there.
Whenever you're hungry, just walk around O.B. and eat anywhere that has a patio - you and your dog.
The last time I went, there was a beeeeautiful bull mastif as well as a great dane. Oh, gosh, soooo magnificent. People are generally pretty cool about letting strangers play with their dogs, although sometimes they seem a little apprehensive as to why someone without a dog is hanging out there. Don't you people understand! I wants me a puppy and I can't have one because of my living quarters and the best way to get my kicks is hang out with other peoples' dogs. I won't hurt 'em =D!

I wasn't all that impressed with this beach...well...mostly with the people that frequent this beach. There are just too many irresponsible owners that bring their dogs here and then don't watch them at all! We have a small dachshund and I don't really care for other people's enormous, aggressive dogs scaring her to death! I love how people just watch for a distance as their dog traumatizes my dog and then yell - don't worry...he won't hurt your dog. Plus...PICK UP YOUR DOG'S POOP! It isn't that hard...they even provide bags for you! It's not brain surgery people!
Watch out for the bums/homeless selling puppies. Not a good idea.
Other then that it was cool. I don't think I'd bring my doggies here, they don't swim. Plus I'd pass the spot around Leucadia and I'd rather take them there, even if it requires a leash.

The sand smells like pee
the dogs run while Lehlahni swims
i have never stepped in poo
As an additional sidenote to the work of art you have just read, I have also seen a dog surfing. yes, a dog surfing. Just don't lay out a blanket and expect it to stay pristine. It won't.

Just got home from dog beach. It has become one of our family weekend rituals: Me the Woman and the four legged poopmachine ballchaser, going to the beach with our chuckit, and wearing our dog out past the point of collapsing exhaustion. This is by far my favorite way to spend a sunday. Crank some reggae on the way to the beach, spend an hour or so throwing the ball around and into the water so my little dude can go swimming, then go to the dog wash to have a bath. I think he thinks sundays are heaven. He is always so stoked on the way to the beach, he keeps his nose out of the car window from the time we get off the freeway until its time to get out of the car to go play. It is a very large stretch of beach to play around on, so you can get human workouts there, too.

This is Disneyland for your dog. My dog can be the laziest, most surly, spoiled and difficult thing that ever did live sometimes. He has been known to push people off the couch, steal your sandwich, and knock over the trash cans on a regular basis. He woke me up once by coughing in my face. But every time I take him to Dog Beach, it seems like he's a little happier and little less of a dick for a few days. So if your dog is punking you, chances are he just wants to run around and sniff some dog ass...and a little trip to Dog Beach is just what he needs.

Not being a dog owner I had never gone to this beach but I have accompanied a friend and his pets twice now in the past couple of months. In the past I dismissed the area as an odd accommodation to the political influence of a minority and thought of it as Dog Shit Beach. The trouble is that much of the sand actually is visibly littered with canine feces. It's good to have a public area where people can let their pets run off leash but there are limits. I don't think that it's a healthy place for children or adults with immune deficiencies to be. Many dogs carry Salmonella and roundworms.
