OB Dog Beach- The Haiku

The sand smells like pee
the dogs run while Lehlahni swims
i have never stepped in poo

As an additional sidenote to the work of art you have just read, I have also seen a dog surfing. yes, a dog surfing. Just don't lay out a blanket and expect it to stay pristine. It won't.

It's always awesome having a off-leash beach and we stayed right behind it.....even better. It was packed on the Sunday we were there...as it should be. As is like everywhere there are always a few dog owners that don't keep tabs on their dogs and clean up after them---damn you all! :0) But overall it's full of great dogs and people.

We came here during "May Gray"-- was really feeling the urge to get the dogs out for some really good exercise-- while we all enjoyed some "fun in the sun"--- but the clouds were massively covering the area.  We didn't let that stop us, we had a marvelous time running from end to end of this place-- Hunter running around barking at other dogs-- and Honey Bear chasing behind him-- trying to keep "the Wild Child" in line!

Great fun!

Good group of dogs and people there--
A lot less crowded than it typically would be on a sunny day-- so that worked to our advantage!

We Loved it!
Had a marvelous time!

I'm giving it a 4 on a scale of 1-5-- because it is a little less scenic than Coronado or Del Mar's Dog Beach area.  But I really like the local "vibe" in this area... so will definitely bring the dogs back here on occasion!

We had a wonderful Adventure!
Loved the morning...
Now back to work!

5 stars for Dog Beach!

Aww... I don't even have a dog but I love love LOVE to go and play with other peoples' puppies.  Hopefully one day I'll be playing with a mid to large sized fluffy dog and its owner and I will fall madly in love... haha.

ANYway.  The parking here, it is always difficult to find a good spot just like anywhere else, I guess, in the summer at the beach.  However, once you get parked and get to where all the dogs are, there's nothing to worry about.  People pick up their dog's poo which is AWEsome.  ha.  And... pretty much I have never met a mean dog there.

Whenever you're hungry, just walk around O.B. and eat anywhere that has a patio - you and your dog.

The last time I went, there was a beeeeautiful bull mastif as well as a great dane.  Oh, gosh, soooo magnificent.  People are generally pretty cool about letting strangers play with their dogs, although sometimes they seem a little apprehensive as to why someone without a dog is hanging out there.  Don't you people understand!  I wants me a puppy and I can't have one because of my living quarters and the best way to get my kicks is hang out with other peoples' dogs.  I won't hurt 'em =D!

This is a great place to bring dogs.  I don't think it is dirty....it's for dogs.
I don't get all the haters.  What more could your dog want?  Do you realize how many coastal cities don't allow dogs on the beach ever (never mind leash free)?
My pup loves it here and thinks it's the greatest place.  How could I argue with that?

My Audrey-dog loves coming to dog beach with her grandma and grandpa. They can walk along while she roams off leash with her so cal friends, just like she does at home in San Francisco.

Although unlike SF, she spends a lot more time in the *much warmer* water down at Ocean Beach. Last time she was in the water so much she even did her business in it. Do you know how hard it was to try and "net" the floating little turds into the doggie waste bag? Ah well.

We paid the OB Dog Beach a visit in 2006 & wasn't impressed with this dog beach. broken glass everywhere, dog poo, & trash..

Hopefully you and your dog have shots up to date! I found the beach on the ghetto side.

Only reason why I'm giving this beach three stars is because Arianna had a blast shakin' her stuff in and out of the water.. followed by sun bathing..

One other thing I found annoying are the hippies who bring their dog/s and allow them to steal other doggies toys, balls and space.

I had a guy laughing at his dog because he would run up to our dog, then run away- his dog kept doing this as well as stealing Arianna's treats. I go the feeling this was the only way he fed his dog to help support his magic-bus-ishopatheblack-smoke money.

Yeah.

Not cool.

Cute dog, but man it was getting old.

We've been sticking to walks around the neighborhood and lake--

GHETTO!  We LOVE DOG GHETTO!  This beach has had such a bad reputation for as long as I can remember.  However, there is a really nice community feel in the off-hours/season and between the regulars here, and they've got all kinds of pups from Chihuahuas to Frenchies to Pitties to Labs - and they all get along.  We could learn a thing or two.  And if you sniff in the wrong place when I'm not allowin' it, says the dog, I'll let you know and we can have a word and then we're all fine and we can all chase the ball some more.

I know that Heaven looks like OB Dog Beach and that's where I want to go when I go.  Sigh.

But I digress.  The beach has a long expansive and varied terrain, including dunes and rocks, for your all-terrain pupster.  There are all kinds of dogs from the minuscule to the humongous, and I've seen maybe three scuffles in my five years of visiting there.  I think that you need to keep your eye on your canine here, as you should everywhere, and be a responsible parent.  But relax and let them have a good time.  It is an amazing place for canines.

I've heard that you will get ticketed if you are caught with your dog off leash between the parking lot and the berm that begins the beach, although I haven't had that pleasure.  I hear that in Coronado the same offense can cost you up to $700, so that's not a unique pain in the butt.  And please oh please pick up the doodie.  The OB Dog Wash generously installed several poopie bag dispensers so there's no excuse, and if you're caught far away with a crouching dog and you 're out of bags, just ask someone- we've all got spares.

Don't bring food to the Dog Beach.  You'll be really sorry.  It's a DOG beach.  And your blanket might get a little wet and sandy, along those same lines.  And you might even get your velor running suit a little mussed.  Seriously.  Often I see people on the weekends dressed for brunch or a date and they instantly regret it once they get down to the water.  It's sadly amusing.  And sometimes you'll actually hear a person cussing out a dog for shaking water on them.  It's a DOG beach.  But I digress.

OB Dog Beach is a great place to meet other like-minded dog lovers and exchange dog stories and advice.  It's a great place to watch your dog running playfully with other dogs, getting a workout and a fabulous socialization.  At the end of the day, you'll have a pooped pup  with even better manners and skills.

It's... it's... sigh...Heaven.  Only poopier.

It's not as dirty as people say. Sometimes idiots leave their dog poo on the sand, but that's typical of ANYWHERE you go. There is always a lazy owner.
I'm lucky because I can walk the dogs or ride my bike to the beach, but if you don't live in OB, parking can be difficult (especially in the summer).
My dogs are chihuahuas and they Dog Beach! The big dogs pick on them sometimes but they hold their own!
There is room to lay out and room to play.
If you want to show your dog the better side of life, bring it to Dog Beach!

This place is doggie CRACK! I have taken my roommates boxer here and the pup goes B-A-N-A-N-A-S!! just ask him...
"Growlll broouf ruff" see he says he loves playing in the sand and especially when other owners throw their tennis balls. That's when you'll see a pack of random doggies bolting across the beach...and forgetting their owners are waiting for them!
Really, it's not that dirty, except when Bodrow pooped in the water (very embarrassing). Owners are pretty good at cleaning up. This place is heaven for pups and their owners. I love taking playing with all the doggies and watching mine enjoy the sun and surf. It makes a great day, you may even have more fun than your dog!

I don't have a dog. But I usually end up around dog beach. Either a random hang out with a dog loving friend or more than likely drunk stumbling from Newport Ave.

Ocean Beach is just a bucket of sweetness. If you have a dog check this place out. They will love you for as long as their attention span lets them.

Should be less stars for the dirty dirty factor. Not a place you wanna swim, and ALWAYS wash your dog afterwards. So many diseases here runnin rampant im sure. And watch where you step. Is it dog poo? Human poo? The world may never know.

But in all seriousness, my doggie loves it here so I will always keep on comin back. She enjoys swimming in the river (not so much the jetty, we have lost many a tennis ball to this treacherous part). Its nice to be able to walk back and forth on the long stretch available to our donkeys.

I should give it even less stars for the man who i actually thought was going to punch me here once. He was kicking his dog... and I called him out on it. And had a slight verbal altercation with him. It was horrible and awkward and I thought I was gonna get the smackdown for sure. He finally packed it up, and I never saw him again thank goodness!

But the 4 stars stand for how much my donkey loves it, its more her review than mine. And kudos to their drinking fountain there, one for me and puppy!

This place is heaven on earth for dogs. I love the beach and I love dogs, so of course I love this place. My wimpy beagle doesn't like to go in the water but he does love to sniff around in the sand. It's so fun to go here and watch all the dogs running, swimming, and playing fetch, with their tails continuously wagging. If you go on a day with nice weather there will be A LOT of dogs and people there and parking may be a little hard to find, but it's usually not insanely crowded. I wouldn't recommend bringing food unless you want to make a bunch of slobbering new friends. One thing that's especially nice about this beach is that there's a channel on one end of the beach that's good for swimming in (although it's up to you if you actually want to swim with dogs, lol).

You'll probably get sandy paws on you and maybe some drool, but it's all in good fun.

One of the first beaches I have visited in San Diego, and definitely one of my favorite for sheer fun.

I have only been on Saturdays and Sundays, and it is always packed with people and dogs alike.  There is a nice variety of big dogs and small dogs, and my little 10 pound Min Pin always makes a few buddies.  The water is a nice depth for swimming, and there aren't too many surfers (probably because the dogs get in their way!).  It is hilarious to watch the dogs swim in the ocean and retrieve frisbees from the surf - and even more entertaining to watch the dogs who are afraid of the waves (like mine).

The area is large and there is lots of room for playing fetch or other games.  The dogs are allowed to roam the entire area at will.  Even though the area is not fenced, it is large enough that they don't run away.  I was worried that my dog would escape towards the street, but they positioned it far enough away from the parking lot that the dogs really have no interest in leaving the shore.

The bathrooms are not great, there are no doors on the stalls - so if you're like me, you're not comfortable with taking your swimsuit off in front of everyone.  The parking is also pretty horrendous on the weekends - I would definitely suggest finding a spot on the street and not dealing with the parking lot.

Afterwards, you can take your dog to the Dog Beach Dog Wash, which is a pretty decent way to clean your messy dog up after the beach.  Everyone I have met there has been very friendly and I haven't seen any aggressive dogs yet.  The dog beach is definitely a great way to spend your day and let your dog get out and have some fun as well!

I have a disclaimer:  I am not a dog person.  In fact, I think most of you dog owners are a little wacky.  The way you dress up your dogs and give them disgustingly cute little names like Taffy or Shasta.   What happened to Rex?

Anyway, so here's the deal:  It's a fine idea to allow dogs on the beach, however, every time I am at this beach im a little overwhelmed by the lack of supervision that takes place.  From time to time I come here with friends who have dogs.   Occasionally, I go surfing here.  What can I say, it's convenient. It's a given that dogs are going to walk all over my blanket, sit and stare at me and beg for food, or just sniff around where he/she should not be sniffing.   There is always a dog fight.  Do you REALLY have to take your pit bull to the beach??

Once, while coming out of the water, I happened to see a dog take a big ol huge dump right in the water.   The owner, who had plenty of opportunities to pick it up, did nothing, and let it float off into the sunset.

Gross.

WOO-HOO!!

Oh, boy, oh boy , oh boy!
I just love to frolic in the waves.

This is a great place to do just that.  The waves are not too big here and it is fairly shallow for a long way out.
Dogs are allowed totally leash free, and the ocean is pretty far down a long stretch of sand, safely away from the street and parking lot.

We had to wait awhile for a parking space to open up, but it was worth the wait  for a full day of beach-combing and ball toss.  All of the pups were really friendly and most of the people had pretty good control over their pooches.
Only a few stingy-types tried stealing my precious floating baseball before I could paddle over in time to rescue it.
The water seemed pretty clean and there were even kids and grown-ups playing in the waves with the dogs, too!

Bring lots of towels and something to throw for your pup so he doesn't steal my toy.

This is the Original Dog Beach of San Diego and is leash free all year long. Parking is easy since there is a lot and also after you bring your doggie to the beach you can just take stroll down the street to the dog wash.  Ocean Beach is a very friendly dog city and everyone that comes just wants to spend time with their dog and most of them are regulars.

I hear people call this dog beach "ghetto" and I don't really get where that comes from. I can only assume that they have actually never been to a real ghetto and just have no reasonable reference point. That said, I love this dog beach! There is tons of space, lots of great dogs, and a few big trash cans. The poop-bag dispenser often runs out though, so it is best to bring your own, just in case!

SO much fun! I loved taking all my dogs there. I had a few rescue dogs that were such a crack up in the water.

The only thing you do have to look for is the occasionally trash on the beach that contains anything from syringes and needles to used condoms. When the sign say contaminated water.. It means it.

Also you really need to make sure you're watching your dog. Not everyone is courteous enough to not bring their aggressive animals.

5 stars for fun
3 stars for safety
4 over all.

my dog can be a little over zealous about meeting other dogs, so we take him all the way east along the river bed, where there are fewer dogs for him to go bonkers over.  speaking of excited, he loves nothing more than to chase the birds down there.  discovered recently that it's actually a violation of federal law to let your dogs chase the birds there.  now i keep my eyes peeled for FBI agents hiding out in the reeds along the river bed, lest i be arrested.

considerations before you take fido:
1. transient, drugged out, sketchy people skulking around the river area
2. your dog will stink to high hell after any contact with ocean or river water there
3. it's really popular, so it can be overrun
4. it's less-well-cared for than other dog beaches in san diego, so watch where you step.  i'm talking about dog poo and used condoms.
5. no fresh water convenient.  when your dog gets thirsty, he may try to drink the sea water.  then, when your dog is expelling bodily fluids from both ends, you'll be really sorry.  can you tell i speak from experience?

i love taking shorty here. i've heard that it's not as nice as dog beach in del mar but shorty seems to have a great time everytime we go. it's just a kick to see him frolicking in the waves with the other dogs. of course the only drawback is that sand gets everywhere and he hates the bath that inevitbaly follows.
