Took my first class 2 days ago. Started off with a good run, then a lot of jump roping, footwork drills, and clinching the bag and throwing knees, Then did mitt work for the last hour or so with pushups and situps in between rounds. You know it's an awesome workout when you leave feeling like puking. I train in BJJ several times a week so I consider myself in great shape and I'm still pretty sore from doing this class.

You're not only pushed hard, but at the same time the coaches are very helpful teaching you the techniques. Definitely coming back here as soon as I can!

I stopped by a couple of weeks ago on a visit to So Cal with the family.  I decided to check out OC Muay Thai to find out if their aggressive Google Ads lived up to the hype.

    The Facility:

The Team works out at the Affliction Training Center in Seal Beach and is very well equipped with a regulation ring, MMA cage, grappling area lined with Zebra mats and a good sized weight area.  It also has a good variety (6 ft,  1/2 bags, tear drop, etc) of heavy bags to work out on as well.  The locker rooms/bath rooms were made to accommodate Affliction's sponsored fighters and is well kept, clean, spacious and the decor is "high class".  There are showers and a steam room but I believe the steam room is only for the Affliction Fighters.

Although it's a pretty standard MMA facility that every gym looks like these days around the country; it has everything you need to succeed.  Most importantly; it was CLEAN!

    The Training:

The Team starts off with a run in front of the Gym.  It's pretty informal---students just start their run whenever they get there (it was a Saturday morning when I visited) and then after the run, they proceed to go get a tractor tire and do tire flips back in forth in the parking lot.  Students work at their own pace, but seemed to be motivated by each other to put in the work.  When the students finish  with the tires the grab a rope and skip for a while.  After that, everyone went inside and we did footwork drills to the timing of a metronome.   Although the tire flipping wasn't "traditional" it was still very enjoyable and a great way to cross train your normal regimen.

Dave (the owner/head instructor) had us then move over to the grappling area to do Teep Drills (front push kicks) and knees onto the padded walls to work on form and technique as well as rhythm and timing off  the clicks of the metronome.  Fun drill.  The assistant instructor, Carter, provided clear and concise instruction on the techniques that were being worked on and gave great analogies that could better help students understand what they are doing and why.

We then moved over to the ring, put our shin guards on and worked some kick sparring.  I sparred 3 rounds with 3 different partners in rotation.  All 3 of their students had pretty good form and good control.  It's always awkward visiting or training at a new gym and just start sparring (at least for me) because you don't know what the culture of their academy is like.  Some places just want to BRAWL and hit you at 100 %.  OC Muay Thai actually felt more like a Thai Camp during this portion of my time there in that people were focused on technique and were having a good time while getting in solid training.

Overall this is a great place to train and learn the art of Muay Thai.  Great facility, great instruction and a great bunch of people to work out with.  I gave them only 4 stars simply because I am not a regular student there so my review is based on only 1 visit.  Definitely take advantage of training with them if you are in that area!

I'll make this easy for you:

It's fun, it's a great environment, awesome venue (especially the steam room) tons of one on one personalized instruction, and Dave the instructor knows more about the craft, the technique and how to get healthy/in shape - better than anyone else I've ever met met.  This is the real deal.

That, and I've dropped from 170 to 140lbs in 10 months, by going 1-2 times a week.  I'm not looking to fight or anything - just love this place as it's the most entertaining way to lose weight and stay in shape.

    Check it out!

I took my first class - thinking I was fit (I was getting ready for my first amateur fight) - and I got a rude awakening. I couldn't walk normal for a week! Ha!

Not because Dave or Carter pushed me - in fact they were supportive, constructive, and excellent coaches. The quality of training was that much superior over where I had been training before. And I pushed myself that much harder for it

Whether you are pushing yourself to a new level - or just getting fit - show up and try it out. Every other gym will seem weak.

Thanks Dave & Carter my classes with you were what I need to be able to win my fight! I wish I found this gym a long time ago!

my 5 stars  = love love love love love it!

    Positives:
    - REAL Muay Thai w/ intense pad work and sparring sessions
    - An amazing facility
    - A kick ass instructor - DAVE!
    - Killer work outs every single time

    Negatives:
    - none :)

    My thoughts:
If you are looking for a gym to do some cardio kick boxing, this is not the place for you.

OC Muay Thai is the ideal place for those that are looking to really learn the art of Muay Thai.  I'm not a fighter, nor was I training to be one.  But I love Muay Thai... and the authenticity and discipline of OC Muay Thai was PERFECT for what I was looking for. Dave teaches authentic elbows, knees, clinches, punches, kicks, teeps and defenses.  And he will have you keep doing it until it's perfect. He will condition your body until you can take a teep to your gut with a smile on your face. And he will build your stamina up so well, you'll be able to do 3 miles, jump rope, flip tires, work kettle bells and still be able to do a spar session all in one night. Yes, each session is 2-3 hours long!

I trained there for about a year when they were in Santa Ana, but stopped training because I moved.  But they recently moved to Seal Beach, I've checked it out and this place is huge, new, clean, and as silly as this sounds... the bathrooms are CLEAN!  (for the girls, if you've been to other gyms, you understand)

My experience at OC Muay Thai has been by far the greatest experience for Muay Thai.

I remember when I first decided to join January 2010 I was a little intimidated reading the reviews. I knew that  I wanted a change not only in my Muay Thai but my fitness level. Let me tell you I got that change. Right off the bat everything that you have read regarding the training is bar far correct. Dave not only challenges you physically but mentally. He has taken me to whole new level.

If you are serious about Muay Thai then this is the school for you. The 2 hrs of training are by far challenging but when you are done after the 2 hrs you feel amazing because you know you completed the challenge and can not wait until the next day.

I have only been to a few schools and I still have not found one that can give me the challenge that OS Muay Thai has given me.

Not only is the training amazing but the people are fun to train with. Its a family atmosphere and Dave makes you feel welcome. What more can you ask for.

I am glad that I did not let my intimidation get a hold of me and decided to join. I made the right choice.

I took a class here and the Muay Thai training along with the workouts are pretty intense.  I've taken a few classes at a couple places and they helped me drastically tweak my technique.  The  facility was top notch since it is the Aflliction training center.  Full cage, professional ring, large mat area, plenty of work out machines and free weights and a cool crowd to train with.  No egos, no drama, just straight people there learning traditional Muay Thai.

DEFINATELY CHECK THIS JOINT OUT, TOP NOT!

This was my first martial art and hopefully my one and only. Prior to entering the doors of OCMT I was just an average guy whose only fitness regime was a Bally's card and completion of p90x twice. I bravely walked into this place, enlightened by muay thai movies, thinking that I "could" easily handle it.  Man was I an idiot back then.

Cardio and conditioning are a major factor in MT and Dave, the instructor, emphasizes on this every training day with 20-35 min runs, and a variety of strength exercises such as tire flipping, body weight activities,  jump ropes and etc before actual technical training. Please don't be fooled by those who can bench press X lbs or lift so and so weights. It means nothing when you translate it into muay thai.

The people here are amazing, absolutely no egos or drama. Experienced fighters such as Carter who trains here regularly is very technical and supportive.  The environment is inviting and clean, this is expected since this is the affliction head quarters.

Things you can expect when you join:
    - Improvement in fitness, health, and fighting skills
-Excellent, safe, and encouraging workout every time, no put downs!
-Accepting classmates, no one cares if you are inexperienced or not fit, everyone helps each other.
-Training that actual fighters do regardless if your here to workout or actually fight, "This aint your regular cardio kickboxing class!"
    - Bruises, sometimes a bloody nose here and there, sore muscles  , and one hell of a good time. * Your sparring partner will hit you as hard as hard you hit them, don't worry no one is here to hurt you, we're just here to learn and have a blast!*

So after my SNAFU at OC Kickboxing & Mixed Martial Arts, my friend tells me about this gym and he did not sugar coat it. He says " the conditioning is hard work. We run for 2 miles and then we flip tires for a good 20-30 mins before we jump rope. But each day various. The main trainer/teacher Dave will push you past your limit. He'll say shit to make you push it hard like 'punch like you're punching the F**ker who's sleeping with your girl' and he's an OG. My friend who went with me for 3 months got in super good fighting shape."

After hearing him tell me his experience with this gym, I decided to go check it out. I met up with him one morning and that was when the addiction began. Dave told him to take me on "the run". So we jogged around the entire block, equivalent of one mile. Since it was my first time working out at this gym, I only did one mile, my friend was hesitant about going back so early because he didn't want Dave to call him a little bitch so he took off to run his second mile leaving me to my own devices. Dave rolls out a huge truck tire and shows me the proper  technique to flipping tire so I don't strain my back. I crouch down and flip the tire thinking to myself this isn't hard at all! 30 mins later and my quads are shaking from pain, begging for me to stop.

    If only that was it.......

We next did circuit training. We each had a partner, the partner's job is to keep us motivated and push us to our limits as we go around each station of the circuit.

First station, we're punching with 1lb or 2 lb weights in each hand depending on your preference. The drill sargent /teacher reminds us to throw that cross by shifting weight off the rear foot.

Second station, we're jumping a weighted rope as fast as we can go.

Third station, we're throwing a 8lb medicine ball at chest level  to the wall with same techniques as a punch.

Fourth station, we're sledgehammering a tire.

Fifth station, we're doing squats with sandbags on your shoulders. When the drill sargent/ teacher sees you slow down, he'll tell you to incorporate jump squats.

Sixth station, we're running with a huge rope around our waist while our partner is on tail pulling to give some resistance.

    Last station, we're flipping tires.

Each station was about a min each and we had to do 3 complete rounds before it was our partner's turn.

After we were done with our conditioning, we went back into the gym took our shoes off and grabbed the belly and kick pads.

We started doing  kicks, teep, knee, with punch combinations. Dave came around to watch and to show and explain what we were doing wrong and how to correct it.
I would practice for 30 mins on such and then it was my turn to hold the pads for my partner.

After this first class I was hooked. Absolutely amazing. You learn something new every time while perfecting your techniques.

If you want to learn REAL Muay Thai, this is the place to go!
The weight loss is just a bonus!!!

Super affordable too! $99/ month for unlimited classes!

Unlike most fighting gyms you frequent, those guys you see, who want to prove to everyone that they can kick your ass and just mess you up, you won't see here. The guys here are training for themselves, NOT to prove to anyone how much better they are than you. Everyone is really friendly and we get to know everyone because its the same people coming to train for years!

After my first day there I could not walk for 4 days because I've used muscles I didn't even know I didn't use because I do other martial arts in my spare time.

P.S. This gym will be moving to a space inside Affliction Clothing's warehouse and it is absolutely amazing! 3 HUGE rings, weights, sauna, TVs, treadmills..so ridiculously awesome.

OC Muay Thai provides very good training. I have been a member since it was back in Santa Ana and now the gym is is a lot more accomodating with a ring and large mat area. Dave is a great trainer that will really push you. What I really like is that he focuses on a lot of clinch work. Expect a class to last 2-2.5 hours.

Dave, I will be back soon. I have a shoulder injury thats keeping me from training.

I don't give out 5 stars a lot but I love this place  I had interviewed practically every Muay Thai Gym in the OC especially the one that claim they train Muay Thai! I have been to Thailand personally to train and seen the best schools in Thailand. David's Gym is the real deal which if  your a person who feels they want to learn real Muay Thai than you will train like one! Your Conditioning will the best in your life i have personally seen special forces and professional fighters hit the wall in this place. If your serious on wanting to learn Muay Thai this is only your true option in Orange county for  Muay Thai boxing

It is the best muay thai gym around. They are one of the only ones that teach 'real' muay thai and not watered down American style.

I've been a member at two other Muay Thai gyms in the past, for a total of 3.5 years (Muay Thai Institute of Kunponli in Salt Lake City, UT, and the Muay Thai Academy of America in North Hollywood). For the record, I enjoyed them both very much. I stopped doing Muay Thai when I got married and had my son, so after five years, I am really out of shape. I read everything I could about all the Muay Thai gyms in Orange County, and OC Muay Thai definitely looked like the best fit.

I'll admit, I was really intimidated, and it took me awhile to get myself in the door, even though I love Muay Thai. But the moment I came in on my first day, the owner, Dave, was really welcoming and friendly. I was scared for no reason at all!

I have a ton of respect for Dave, and I can tell that all of his students genuinely respect him, too. I think that's a really important attribute for a trainer in a Muay Thai gym. He's obviously a very skilled trainer and fighter (he reminds me very much of my former trainers, who were Thai), and although he looks like someone I'd never want to mess with, he is genuinely a nice person. He'll push you to excel, but never in a way that would hurt your body.  And if you're sore or hurt, he gives the best advice... and so far, he has always been right!

The workout starts with a jog around the block outside the gym. This is the part I was most dreading. I simply do not like running outside. But if you have to walk it, no one is going to judge you. (It's a necessary part of training to build up your cardio so you don't run out of steam in the ring. I realize that.)

After the warm up, we go through different drills, and sometimes Dave shows us some really great Yoga moves. The Muay Thai training itself is really awesome! Dave ALWAYS mixes it up and you're never bored. The 2-2.5 hours I am there always fly!! The other students have always been very friendly, and believe me, I am always the most out of shape one there, but again, no one is judging you, everyone is there to improve themselves whereever they are at. Also, I should note that of all the Muay Thai instructors I have met, Dave is the one who is most informative in regards to technique. He really invests a lot of time in making sure you are doing true Muay Thai techniques... which probably doesn't happen if there is a high turnover rate in the students, and there doesn't seem to be a high turnover at OC Muay Thai. (I really enjoy seeing the same group of students each time.) When you leave, you feel empowered and energized!

The facilities are extremely clean and new. I have been a little scared of locker rooms at previous gyms, but OC Muay Thai is kept immaculate. Plus, I love that there is a steam room for our use if needed. Brilliant!

I can't wait until my son is old enough to be able to take Muay Thai lessons. I will for sure be signing him up at OC Muay Thai!

I cannot recommend OC Muay Thai enough. I love it and am already looking forward to my next session!
