I love shopping local, but the nature of small boutiques is that they close at like 6 or 7 and I work and am busy on weekends, so there's always these shops that I LOVE but I can't get to.
Well - enter http://Oaklandunwrappe.... I can shop from home and shop local at the same time. It's a great way to discover all the lovely shops that Oakland has to offer.
Plus Erin, who runs it, is awesome and has an amazing amount of energy for what she's doing.Listed in: One for you...One for me...

Best Friends Erin & Annie were both getting married the same month a few summers ago when each wanted a non-corporate wedding/gift registry. Nothing against Macy's or Target but something with local interest while keeping the economic impact here in Oakland. They couldn't find what they wanted to they decided to create one! I HEART Oakland and so does Erin which is kinda weird since she and her posse are originally from Pennsylvania and have only been in the area for a few years. I met her last year at the http://meetdowntownoak... media event when the Oakland Unwrapped concept was still in it's infancy.
Erin is such a proud mami about the non-profit she is putting together to showcase the richness and diversity of the entrepreneurs and small businesses in Oakland. Presently, it's a website and online newsletter with articles and contact info for local services to hand made candles to beauty products, etc. The online marketplace will be debuting soon to allow for online local shopping after business hours or when many of the independent vendors can't be at your farmer's market during the cold/rainy months here. Her group also has other great ideas such as a Oakland Unwrapped gift card and will put together various 'date packages' with gift certificates as well as a gift registry from members of the online marketplace.
The company will also help local vender's develop and maintain a web presence though planning and tech support once someone's business/product is a member. My family's business, La Borinquena (http://www.tamalegirl.com), has been invited to take part in some of the planning stages of the website's goals and we are very excited and honored. Oakland Unwrapped will definitely fill the online niche needed to help the ongoing revitalization that my hometown is FINALLY experiencing.

Right now, this site is a wealth of great information about local businesses and artists, but starting May 4, you'll be able to shop online!
We all work hard for our money, so it's great to be provided an easy way to spend this hard earned cash on high quality goods that support our local community. -
