I found OCA here on Yelp...but first a little background.
I've had acupuncture before with another practitioner in 2005 and with a year of treatment, I had no more back pain and haven't had any since. Amazing!! I am a total believer.
So on to the present. I live in the Pill Hill neighborhood and there are many acupuncture places around. Didn't think much about it until the last couple of months when my shoulder started bothering me with some serious muscle spasms. Then I noticed I was having a limited range of motion - oh crap!! That was interfering with my motorcycle riding so now it was time to act.
I scoped out a few places while I was at work and had pretty much decided on a couple of businesses with OCA being one of them. Ever had that little voice tell you where to go or what to do? Yeah, me too, and that little voice made that decision for me later that day.
I made the appointment and met with Chris. Because I was having serious issues with my shoulder, they had scheduled my consultation and a treatment for the same time. When Chris was starting my treatment, I couldn't lie down and have my arm flat so he had me stand, hit a point on my opposite hand, and had me walk around moving my shoulder. Then he treated me with the electrode things...well, two hours later I felt much better.
At the next appointment, I saw Ky. He said I had a frozen shoulder. I told him I was too young for that shit (I never knew what that was when patients would tell me they had that - I was an x-ray tech for many years) and he said nope, I was 50's and it was common. He let me know this is one of the few times acupuncture is going to hurt because we had to break the adhesions. Ugh...no shit!
So far, after several treatments my range of motion has improved and it will take several more. As I told Ky, I can suck up the pain knowing it's for the better. Had to stay off the bike for a bit, too.
I preach acupuncture to everyone I know and I have confidence it will help for many other things. Once the shoulder is done, then we'll work on the weight loss and other stuff.
OCA is the bomb!! Run, don't walk to them and get treated. You never have to see the needles, either. More later once I deal with the other stuff. -

This place is wonderful. The just open a new location in the GRAND LAKE NEIGHBORHOOD on Grand Ave across from Safeway (http://oaklandnorth.ne...). This was my first experience with acupuncture and I will be going every Friday for a while. Why is it possible for me to do that. $15 - $35 per session sliding scale! AND, because it is in a community setting (big room with several very comfy chairs) you can hang out for as long the acupuncture buzz will hold you there. (that's also why it is less expensive (and less sterile) than a doctors office type setting. Great gift idea!

Looking for an acupuncturist can be intimidating. Especially if you are new to Chinese Medicine. Luckily I stumbled upon OCA at the Grand Lake Farmer's Market one Saturday afternoon.
I've been to OCA for back and knee pain and I always feel better after a session. After seeing my doctor, having x-rays taken and then a cortisone shot, my back pain persisted. My doctor was hesitant about referring me to a chiropractor (he said he's never heard of a chiropractor that said an x-ray was normal!) so I decided to try acupuncture. After one acupuncture and cupping session, I felt the difference. I was able to stretch my back without as much pain. On my follow up session I mentioned knee pain and Chris worked on my knee. Two days later the pain in my knee is gone and I can walk without pain!!! Acupunture isn't always a "quick-fix" and can take multiple sessions, so you have to stick with it if you want better results.
If you are thinking about trying acupuncture, I highly recommend OCA. The only way to know if acupuncture will work for you, is to give it a try. Chris and Ky will take care of you, don't be scared!! -

I'll start off by saying I'm a bit of a skeptic/cynic -- especially when it comes to doctors and healers. Everybody thinks their specialty is the cure-all (or, "when you are a hammer, the whole world looks like nails.") Having said that, I went into OCA with an open mind on the recommendation of a good friend. There I met Chris Randle who provided me with some therapies with which I was familiar, and some new ones. Chris has a very positive attitude, does not mind answering questions--or being challenged, and most importantly, I've gotten great results from his treatments.
Most recently, I went in with a pinched nerve in my neck which had gotten progressively worse over several days. Chris put me through a rigorous (and yes, at times a little painful) routine for nearly two hours. But when I left I was already feeling better -- not 100%, but had a clear improvement. Within 2 days I had full range of motion and felt SOOO much better. No one can fix everything--and OCA doesn't claim to. But for the things they do address, my experience has been that I've gotten great results. -

Chris is a master of Tui na.
Tui na is Chinese medical massage, and is very powerfully effective. It can also be very painful, but Chris will not make it any more painful than you wish it to be. I ask him to not hold back at all, because I want the treatment to be as beneficial as possible; this frankly means it's painful enough I wouldn't go unless I my need for it, and my healing from it, was so very great.
I'd be frightened to schedule such a treatment with anyone else. But after many treatments over the years, I know to completely trust his skill and awareness. And fortunately Chris was most highly recommended to me initially by another of the few people on Earth whom I trust completely.
I have numerous very fragile chronic medical conditions (including repetitive strain injuries), which almost everything makes worse; but not Chris, even though his Tui na can be very intense.
I have profound appreciation for acupuncture, and I admit I do try it first because I don't look forward to the pain of Tui na, but sometimes only Tui na can heal me.
Tui na by Chris are the most powerful treatments I've ever had. I've only received a tiny fraction as much benefit from massage by others. And from chiropractic, which I understand was inspired by a tiny fraction of what Tui na does.
As a delightful by-product, I have never in my life been more completely relaxed than I am after a Tui na session with Chris. -

I really enjoy the experience and professionalism of Ky and Chris at OCA. They both always make me feel welcome and relax. I recently started coming back to OCA after about a year from my first visit, which also was the first time I experienced acupuncture. Chris helped me to understand the importance of healthy rest, stretching, food and meditation. The pain that I was feeling was relieved and my mind was at ease, not to mention I got a pretty good afternoon nap. Now trust me, I'm a hip hop cat and for me, at first I thought to myself, " This isn't going to help" but boy was I wrong! It helped in such a way that I cant stop going back. I tend to believe or I am starting to believe that Eastern medicine including acupuncture is more beneficial and better for the better than Western. I cant wait to go back. Thanks guys!

Wow. I think I am in love. This place is awesome. I am a skeptic, by nature, so when my doctor recommended I try acupuncture for some pregnancy related aches and pains, I ignored him. I ran into the OCA booth at my local farmers market, and figured that I just needed to take the leap and give it a try.
Things I love:
-Their office space is beautiful, peaceful, and super relaxing.
-It is close to my doctor's office, so I am able to get my western medicine and then walk two blocks for my wellness medicine, and its great.
-They know what they are talking about. I filled out the pretty extensive medical history form, and with Lupus, and a host of other chronic illness related conditions, I expected them to be a little scared. They weren't! They were totally informed on Lupus, pregnancy, and all the other crap that I was there for, and took a full hour to talk with me about how they could help me, and how I can better treat myself.
I'm so glad these guys are here and I can't wait to continue with my treatment. -

Ky and Chris are amazing healers. They are kind, caring, efficient and funny.
I send everyone I know to see them no matter what the ailment is. Whether I have mystery pain no Western practitioner can understand or am dealing with my chronic stress issues, they have helped.
Highly, highly recommended for those new to acupuncture or looking for a new clinic.
The addition of Jennifer is a bonus. She is very gentle and warm and she specializes in women's health. -

Holy cow! I must have done some awesome deeds in a past life to have run into Chris volunteering at a community Health Fair just as I was being slammed by an insomnia that was rendering me near-zombie. I had tried all kinds of treatments, some Western-type ("take this 10mg Ambien and a vitamin D pill...."), some holistic type. Nothing had made significant, long-lasting progress.
Two-3 weeks after going twice weekly to the OCA at their recommendation, my ability to sleep deeply has vastly improved and is on an uphill climb. I noticed a huge change change in my health- probably because not only do they do acupuncture, they also told me foods to eat, gave me herbs to take, and talked about lifestyle issues. I'm making a big set of changes at their recommendation, which was what I suspected would be needed, but I couldn't figure out on my own. Their holistic approach is working for me.
Turns out another friend of mine also goes to the OCA and she says the Tui Na (medical) massages are also incredible.
Both Chris and Ky have an amazing amount of knowledge and it's a strength of their clinic that you see each of them at different times- they complement each other. You may freak out at their ability to diagnose - by reading my pulses, Chris asked me if I had soreness in my left knee- and I do! How he saw that I'll never know, but it was impressive and a harbinger of good to come.
If you are hesitating - why? Check em out and I think you'll be impressed. hey -it's your health & why not tune it up? -

I'm so glad I found Oakland Community Acupuncture and Dr's Ky and Chris. With regular treatment, my symptoms are improving. I'm enjoying learning about my body and my health and taking better care of myself. I'm even starting to decompress, and to handle life's stresses with greater ease.
Thanks for your caring treatments! -

It is now a little over a month since I first started going to see Ky and Chris at OCA.
I am pretty astounded at the results that I have seen and felt in both my back pain, which is gone, and also my general feeling of well being.
My body has responded very well to the treatments, and I feel 10 years younger, and can SEE the changes in my body in the mirror.
Ky and Chris are very caring and gentle, and I felt well taken care of.
Such a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere too.
I am now getting my husband in this week.
Thanks guys! -

I saw Ky for several months for chronic anxiety which I've had (and been medicated for) for almost 15 years. I decided to get off the medication and give Chinese Medicine a whirl. Upon leaving my treatments, I was walking on clouds. Ky was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and I always felt comfortable in his presence. His professional and considerate demeanor always put me at ease. He also introduced me to two herbal supplements which helped immensely. I was slightly skeptical of Chinese medicine when I went in, but I have since learned that it really can help.
They also accepted my insurance (Aetna) which was awesome. -

I can't say enough positive things about OCA, Ky and Christopher. I have been to two other practitioners over the years and they were OK, but going to OCA is an entirely different experience. I have a lot of health issues, they took an extensive health history and said I will be a challenging case, but they weren't scared off. I have seen both practitioners, I like them both equally and they have different styles, they indeed complement each other very well as another reviewer said.
The office is in a beautiful old house, it is warm and comfortable and the treatment rooms are extremely comfortable. Easy access off the freeway and surface streets, and they take my insurance!
I look forward to my appointments and I know that they want to help me, it puts me at ease and I trust them both completely and I cannot recommend them highly enough. I feel very lucky that my fellow yelpers led me to Ky and Chris, thank you! -

I haven't had a lot of acupuncture in my time since my son was born, but the facial rejuvenation I had with Jennifer was wonderful. The space is quite lovely. I will go back for sure!

These are the nicest, most capable and healing acupuncturists I have ever been to! If you haven't tried acupuncture you will definitely feel comfortable here. They do a blend of different techniques and they really work! I have sent all of my friends here.

Ky and Christopher are two of the best acupuncturists ever....and I've been to several so this counts, folks. For first timers, rest assured that it's gentle. They use very fine needles so you barely feel a thing and it's pain free. I met them at their booth at the Oakland Farmer's Market and have been a loyal client ever since.

These folks are not just great at Acupuncture, they are really trying to do something for the community. They offer reduced rate services for those that can't really afford the full price, although for me they are very inexpensive because they take my insurance.
Chinese medicine is a very real treatment everyone should consider, especially if your regular medical folks are trying to give you a lot of medication or surgery! -

I am so pleased with the personal attention and care that Chris and Ky give. When I am there I feel really listened to, which is something that doesn't happen as often as it should in a doctor's office. They are kind and generous. When I leave there I find myself in a deep state of relaxation. I have been feeling better since I began treatment two weeks ago. These guys are a great find!!!

Ky is the acupuncturist I see at OCA. I am always deeply moved by him, not only by his immense knowledge and wisdom of acupuncture, but also by his vast compassion and kindness. I have been restored both physically and emotionally. I had been suffering from extreme sleep deprivation and adrenal exhaustion and Ky (and 2 sessions with Chris) have worked a miracle! I am now sleeping again and my ability to function is greatly improved. Reading the other yelp reviews all echo the same theme: "love these guys," "nicest, most capable healers," "extremely knowledgeable," etc. Believe it!!!!! Now my whole family goes to OCA -- a testimony to the excellent treatment Ky and Chris provide. Words are inadequate to communicate my gratitude to Ky and Chris.

My lovely roommate sent me here (she was getting treatment for hip pain) and I am so glad she did. Ki and Chris are amazing. My first visit I spent a good 40 min. or more going over my entire health history - physical, mental, etc. Treatment there has helped my asthma more than any inhaler ever has. Going here is like going on vacation or some sort of wonderful retreat, best of all you're not just relaxing but emerging healthier as well. Most of all they are both great listeners, wonderful people and excellent at what they do. This was my first try at acupuncture and even though I was a bit nervous I would recommend them to anyone. I've been going here since last summer, my only complaint is I don't have as much time to go as I would like!
