Oakland, CA
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these people and the place really feels like home.
I've got all kinds of health problems that mainstream western medicine has essentially shrugged their shoulders at and gave me a big ol' "we dunno" face on more than one occasion and left it at that. So I started looking for help elsewhere. I had tried acupuncture only once before and had a wonderful experience but I'm no longer employed and couldn't afford to see a private acupuncturist.
A couple of friends told me about the Oakland Acupuncture Project so I decided to check them out. I was blown away by how affordable, easy, and comfortable the place is! This was back in January of 2011 and I've been going at least once a week ever since.
Allow me to list some of my most favorite things (in no particular order):
* INEXPENSIVE: $15-$35 per treatment. You pay what you think you can afford. And you can pay as you go, for several sessions at once, and they're totally cool if you forgot your payment and just ask you to bring it in next time. SAY WHAT?! Btw, quick tip, they accept check or cash only.
* EASY TO SCHEDULE: Their online scheduling system is so frick'n easy and you can usually schedule a session that day if you want to. The booking system will even email you a reminder a couple of days before your appointment to remind you it's coming up.
* SUPER FRIENDLY: I've worked with a few different practioners at OAP and every single one of them has been so friendly, laid back and yet professional and clearly competent. Though I must admit a soft spot in my heart for Whitney Thorniley, one of the co-owners of the business. She rocks my world.
* SO MUCH FLUFFY: I love building a little cocoon for myself in their super comfortable reclining chairs. They've got warm blankets, standard pillows, and round pillows... and lots of them. They're all regularly laundered too.
* PARKING: Free and easy (at the Laurel location). BAM. Also right next to a bus line it that's your thing. One of the practioners has also begun offering discounts during her shift if you arrive by bike.
* COMMUNITY STYLE: I love that I can get my treatment with my best friend in the chair next to me. Also, because of the way it's set-up, you can stay relaxed in your chair (and even fall asleep) for as long as you'd like. You don't have to worry about vacating the room to make way for the next patient. They're always connecting with other people offering alternative medicine and services, often providing discounts for OAP patients. Also, OAP is always out in the community too, providing free treatments, doing food drives, and generally being cool fellow human beings. Way to work it!
* FREE TEA: I'm actually not a fan of tea, but some people are. So that's cool of OAP to offer that.
* MONTHLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER: Keep'n us fans in the know each month, not just about what's going on at OAP, but also providing advice with ancient Chinese wisdom. And it only goes out once a month which keeps it out of the annoying frequency zone.
* MAGIC BEANS: They also sell all kinds of amazing Chinese herbal remedies. My particular favorite is the Yin Qiao Jie Du Wan, which I affectionately refer to as the magic beans. If you take this stuff when you first feel like you might be getting sick, you get to escape the evil sickly demons. I'm a skeptic by nature and generally don't fall for placebos, so when this stuff worked three times in a row, I was sold. It's now something I always have around at home to ward off any cold that dares try to invade my body. Take THAT stupid germs!
* TWO LOCATIONS: They recently opened up a new location near Lake Merritt. How's that for convenience? The set-up there is nice and cozy too. Only downside is you have to pay for parking. Well, unless you're a gimp like me and have a disability parking placard. Then you're golden. Also, again near the bus lines and easily bikeable.
Seriously y'all, show them some love. They'll sure as hell share their love with you. -

LOVE this place. Just tried it for the first time this morning. Calming, relaxing, serene. Jeff was attentive, a great listener, kind. All this and reasonably priced to boot. Can't recommend it strongly enough.

Now that I've discovered this gem, I don't think I can survive without them! I'm a full time professional musician constantly dealing with pains associated with overuse of my arms, shoulder, back. If my body feels run down and I need to get up to another rehearsal next day, I make my appointment with Whitney or Roselle and I feel relief right away! Sometimes I make an appointment for the same day and I can usually get in. I've seen them for insomnia, energy level, cold symptoms with results. It's not a huge burden on my finances, plu they are super nice and laid back.

I've had chronic headaches and arthritis that I cannot take meds for (I take blood thinners that contraindicate NSAIDS).
I suffered for three years pretty continuously, having tried other acupuncturists as well as other therapies. I've now been going here for about four months and have been extremely happy with the results. I still get the occasional headache and arthritic aches, but nothing like I suffered with before coming here. -

I have been going for a long time but not all the time, basically on an "as need" basis. Recently went back because I have to have rotator cuff surgery and wanted to get of the pharms for pain. The treatments have eliminated pain at night so I can sleep. It is really amazing and I am seeing all the acupuncturists and they all have special gifts. What a gift to us who live in Oakland to have this available to deal with our health issues.

Today I experienced acupuncture for the first time and really enjoyed it. This place was recommended from a friend and I'm really looking forward to my next visit.
Diana was warm and welcoming and I wasn't at all anxious or nervous.
If you've never tried it, please give it a shot and see what it can do for you.. -

One of the many blessings of Oakland!
This place is a real jewel for the community, I had not heard about i until a friend took me for a treatment. Signing up is $15 and treatments go on sliding scale from 15 to 30. I've been back many times and it's becoming part of my preventive health care. The last month I've had all sort of stresses, from financial worries to headaches and every time I've been here the practitioners lift up my sorrows and imbalances.
I've only met Cody and Priscilla, they are both WONDERFUL, so much, I confess I look for them to get my appointments but, I bet the rest are amazing too. Thank you all for your service, it's changing our community! -

This place is a life-saver. Really. I have not had much luck with western medicine and it's expensive! I've been go to OAP for a year and a half now and I would say it's my go-to when I'm feeling "off." OAP and the super-friendly, down-to-earth practitioners are incredibly knowledgeable. I've gone to OAP for chronic pain, anxiety issues, jet lag, cold and flu, and just for general maintenance care. It's so inexpensive ($15-35/visit) that I can visit several times a week if I want. Finally! Being well is not a question of "can I afford it?"
I will also say that this clinic is particularly down-to-earth. They meet you at the level of your symptoms and talk very straightforwardly about their work. I think this is helpful for those who aren't familiar with the framework of traditional chinese medicine. And yet, they are firmly grounded in the wisdom and knowledge that comes from that tradition. The first time I visited I explained several symptoms that I felt very generally unrelated--burning in my chest and waking up between 1 and 4 am. Whitney responded "Oh yeah, we have an herb just for that." Yeah, the wisdom is crazy-helpful and practical.
Not only is this an amazing acupuncture clinic, but it's also part of the Community Acupuncture Network, a movement of people working towards providing affordable, sustainable medical care. I like knowing that these people are not only knowledgeable and compassionate, but passionate change-makers.
Besides the wonderful care, they also provide wonderful service. Their online booking is super easy to use. I often wake up in the morning and look for an appointment that day.
Lots of words to say, in short, that this place rocks on so many levels. -

I love this place. I come here for chronic pain, asthma, anxiety and other reasons. I have had the pleasure of being treated and healed by most of the acupuncturists and I can honestly say they are all amazing healers. I work in the western medicine side of the spectrum for a living, but I get my healing from these people. I have had several knee surgeries and acupuncture is the only thing that has helped with the chronic pain. I try to go as much as possible and because it is affordable I can really go frequently to get treatments. Easy to schedule online. So far this is one of the best things about living in Oakland for me. Also they are knowledgeable with their Chinese herbs. And.... I get massage work here as well. I really like Ranjot and feel comfortable with him. He has great skill and strong hands. This place is also very queer and trans friendly as well, which is necessary for my healing.

This place rocks! I went last year when I was totally stressed out after a big performance. I was having ocular migraines and was worried that I'd have to go to UC Opthamology for some serious work. After 2 sessions, they were completely gone. I went regularly for general stress, menopausal symptoms and other stuff for about 6 months. A lot improved in my life. I love all the practitioners there. Priscilla is incredible. She is very creative and uses some method that I'd never tried before. You can't beat the price and the community vibe is the best!

Recommended to me by the fabulous Kathy Koger, nurse practitioner at East Bay Women's Health, Oakland Acupuncture Project is awesome, plain and simple.
I started going several weeks ago for back/pelvic pain, as well as uber-brain-craziness-and-mood-swings caused by Sir-Kicks-A-Lot taking up space in the hot tub that is my uterus. I realized that I was "officially uber-brain-crazy" when Mr. Cara was kind enough to bring home a burrito for me to eat for dinner, only to watch me melt down into a hysterical mess because it was stuffed with pinto beans, lettuce, sour cream, cold cheese, and guacamole, when what I had REALLY wanted was plain, REFRIED beans and MELTED cheese and nothing else inside that tortilla.
Like I said, totally brain-crazy. And wouldn't you know that he actually went out and got me another? What a great freaking guy. But I digress!
If you're skeeved out by the thought of sitting in a chair or putting your head on a pillow that has been occupied by other people, stop reading now. If you can't relax and get your groove on unless you're in a room by yourself, stop reading now. If you prefer a more clinical setting for your acupuncture needs, stop reading now.
The OAP takes on a much more traditional, community-based approach, utilizing a shared space for treatment, and sliding-scale for their fees. Don't let this give you the impression that they don't know what they're doing, or that this is some kind of "discount" clinic. I've been treated by both Roselle and Whitney, and they are thorough, kind, and knowledgeable - and I am absolutely feeling the benefits.
Their chairs are insanely comfortable, and they provide pillows and blankets should you want to use them. I look forward to making OAP a part of my regular routine, even after giving birth. This place is fantastic.
----------
note: because OAP is a shared space, you *may* find yourself trying to relax and meditate while the person several chairs down from you is snoring like a rusty chainsaw. While this has only happened to me once, it's worth mentioning simply as a practical observation.Listed in: Oh Baby.

Oakland Acupuncture Project is amazing - I can't believe it took me over a year to try it out considering I just live down the street. The practitioners Whitney and Roselle are super sweet and caring. They have three community treatment rooms and operate on a sliding scale. I started treatments for chronic pain after having three foot surgeries and was quite impressed with everything OAP had to offer. Highly recommended.

This place is amazing and I wish I'd found it sooner. I have been battling a horrifically painful disease for about 10 years now. This week, for the first time since I was 17, I was able to ride a bike without pain. It was an amazing feeling.
Whitney was very easy to talk to and made me feel very comfortable my first time at Oakland Acupuncture Project. Before I left she gave me a bottle of Chinese herbs and instruction on how often to take them. The community atmosphere is very inviting and relaxing. After Whitney poked me I almost immediately fell asleep.
I love this place and would highly recommend them to everyone I know. -

This is definitely a place to try if you are in need of Acupuncture and on a Budget.
My first visit I was a little thrown off because I entered the office and no one was insight, I was like what the hell?!?!?
So I sat down and noticed some paper work to the side of me, it was the basic fill this out paper work that comes along with acupuncture, so I started filling out the paper work and within a few minutes someone came out to assist me.
Once all the paper was done I was lead in to a quiet room allowed to pick a space (My favorite space is in the smaller back room on the left). Once I was seated/reclined the practitioner started and before I knew it I was passed out sleep for over an hour. It was one of the most relaxing sleeps I have ever had. I also love that even though I passed out for over an hour I did not feel rushed. No one was like its time for you to go.
Once the practitioner noticed I was awake she asked was I was ready, I said yes and she had me already to go in under five minutes. When I left my back felt great, muscles were very relaxed and stayed relaxed until my follow up visit.
One of the best places to get acupuncture on a budget.. -

I have scheduled appointments here for a few weeks and I have only good things to say about it. The sliding scale fee $15 - 35 is a huge selling point. But I also dig the practitioners - Whitney is very caring and has a real positive energy. They seem with the needle placement to know the right level of intensity.
The space is peaceful and the chairs they use are comfortable. The only minor negative I can think of is that they only have one massage table. Since I have back problems, I would prefer access to a massage table to lie flat on.
After they put the needles in you get to stay for anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour - needless to say, a lot of people end up falling asleep there, I usually catch up on my mid week nap while I'm there.
Highly recommended, especially if you are new to acupuncture (since they are so nice there) or are interested in exploring multiple acupuncture treatment and affordability is a priority. -
Review from Danny L.
I love this place. The community treatment room is comfortable and serene. Whitney is absolutely amazing and the treatment is as good as it gets. Whitney was very knowledgeable and extremely effective in targeting my problem areas and providing instant relief. After the needles were inserted, I had the most relaxing and peaceful nap I have ever had. After an hour of pure bliss and relaxation, I opened my eyes and gave Whitney a nod to let her know I was ready to go.
The sliding scale fee allows you to receive regular treatments without hurting your budget. $15-$35 per treatment?! You pay what you feel like paying?! You can stay as long as you wish?! Can it get any better?!Listed in: Holistic Healing and Massage…

It is true that this is not the "usual" acupuncture spot. They keep things efficient and bare-bones, focusing on what matters - the acupuncture. The business model was started in Portland and is known as community acupuncture - the idea is to have a basic conversation and get comfortable, get the needles in and then rest for as long as you want -- and then to keep this process affordable enough that folks can come back again soon. They keep it real. Their belief in what they do is so genuine it's beautiful. I am thoroughly impressed.
FYI: you just roll up your sleeves and your pant legs for the needles, so wear comfortable clothes that don't get in the way! -

Update: They have a million comfy & fuzzy fleece blankets and roll pillows so you can get a perfect comfort fit in their chairs. Don't know how I managed to miss them until now.... I grabbed a few and dang near fell asleep during my treatment.
Oh, and their massage therapist, Corey? There is none better! Half an hour on his table and I'm actually walking straighter. It really does not get any better than this!1 Previous Review: Show all »

So amazing! If you have wanted to try acupuncture but were hindered by the cost, here is your answer. Both acupuncturists are warm, kind, truly interested in helping you be well.
The environment is comfortable and relaxed. It is easy to set up appointments. If you feel like you are suddenly coming down with something, you can always drop in for some emergency acupuncture and nip it in the bud.

Oakland Acupuncture Project is awesome. They make it so easy and affordable to get regular care. Going regularly is the key to really making a difference in your health. I mostly see Whitney for my appointments and she is great. She listens to all my symptoms and gently inserts needles into the meridians that need work. I slowly checkout into a lovely meditative state and 25 minutes later awake feeling balanced. My opinion is that everyone who believes in the power of regular acupuncture should give this clinic a try.
As someone who has seen the positive effects of acupuncture but not able to continue with the high costs most practitioners charge, the community setting that they have created at OAP makes acupuncture a valid way to turn your health issues around.

I can't believe its taken me so long to review OAP. I am such a fan of Oakland Acupuncture Project. I lived in Oakland for a few months, and heard about this place from a little post-card I saw of theirs somewhere. I decided to try it out since its SOOO affordable (15 on the low end if that's all you can afford), and apparently good for a gazillion issues (including emotional) which I can def use :-)
I went here for several months, and just loved the experience. I completely felt a difference with my body and emotions, and really felt like I was taking care of myself in a profound way. I hadn't done acupuncture before, and really didn't know what to expect. I had gone through a horrible year (or 2) before moving to Oakland, and I swear (I know this sounds cheesy), but OAP was a huge part of my "healing" process. I feel like I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for Oakland Acupuncture Project.
When I moved back to LA, I realized just how amazing this place really is...I am now trying to go to a low cost community acupuncture place by my house...and even though I think they are skilled there, and I now believe acupuncture is helpful regardless, something about OAP really sets it apart...its something I can't really define, although I've been trying to. It def. has to do w/ the lovely staff there..I love all of them, specially Whitney. But its little things as well...like how you don't have to pay right away when you step in, but can pay when you leave...and you leave it in a box, so you don't have to be embarrassed about leaving the low end of the scale since you are broke :-)
And when you walk in, there is always tea and water for you. Where I go right now (I won't name it), they ask for the money right away, and you don't put it in a box, but give it to someone. And there is never any tea there. I have to ask for water, and its all the way in the back. And even though the practitioners seem skilled, their bed side manner sucks...something the folks at OAP are amazing at. Like if I don't go to this place for a few weeks b/c I'm broke or whatever, they are always like, why aren't you more regular, and make me feel guilty. Anyways my point is OAP is AMAZING. For all the reasons I listed and more...and the point of my comparisons is that I didn't know exactly how amazing they were until I tried somewhere else. -

I'm on the fence about this review. There is a lot to like about the Oakland Acupuncture Project. These folks are generous, easy-going, empathic, and providing a service to the community at affordable and sensitive sliding scale rates. I wouldn't call it nuanced or sophisticated acupuncture; I would call it meat-n-potatoes acupuncture. I've attended for some specific aches, none of which abated after several treatments. I could continue to go for two or three appointments per week for months on end, but I question whether I should need to. This isn't the first acupuncture I've had -- I'm rather an acupuncture old-hat -- and I've had more powerful treatments in one session than I've had here in several. They take my pulse each time I come in, but I never got the sense that they had any idea what to glean from it. Other more traditional acupuncturists I've been to -- in the US and abroad, usually Chinese -- who could gather more than one dozen bits of information from my pulse and connect it to my subjective reports of pain or tension to information gleaned from my tongue. I'm not moved that these guys -- as sweet and well-meaning as they are -- have anywhere near that expertise.
That said, you do get what you pay for. Even were someone to pay the most expensive rate on the sliding scale ($35), it would still be half (or less) of what other acupuncturists charge. The sliding scale is $15-35 -- I suspect most people pay closer to the minimum -- in which case a person could have five or six or seven appointments here for just one appointment at other places. The question is --would one appointment with a world-class acupuncturist provide more relief than five or more from these guys? I suspect so. Of course, where would one find a world-class acupuncturist? I went to an excellent one in Thailand. I used a superb one in Akron. Of the dozen or so other acupuncturists I've been to, these guys are middling or less.
So why the four-star rating? They are great people who are trying to provide a service to a population who needs access to alternative care. I'm not confident that I'll return often or again -- indeed, I'm seeking out a more expensive, more focused, more experienced, more powerful acupuncturist -- but I like these folks. I like their heart. I like their values. The Oakland Acupuncture Project is a successful project full of heart, and on that basis I give it my support. As a patient, I'm looking elsewhere. -

Amazing. Easy. Inexpensive. Effective. Great Practitioners.
I have been a lover of acupuncture for over 10 years, and after having an incredible Acu. doc to call my own in SF for a long time where I paid triple what I pay at Oak Acu, I was a bit skeptical about sharing my treatment in a common room - and continued my drive to SF when I sought treatment.
Out of need, I finally gave Oak Acu a go many months ago.
OMG. I love it here. Even with a shared space, the treatment effect was the same - my ailments disappeared and I felt the treatment sink in. No private room required, the effect of the acupuncture is the same - for 1/3 the price, and equal the personal approach and effectiveness. Thank you Oak Acu for being here!!! -

I went to Oakland Acupuncture Project not knowing how the heck acupuncture works. I still don't know. I've been going there for the summer. One of the blessings of having no insurance for traditional western medicine is that I've tried alternative methods and have gotten much healthier than I have been in years. I was taking allergy medicine for years having been allergic to planet earth. I still take a stinging nettle compound some days, but my god, I'm relatively cured. If like me, you have had problems for years, they won't go away in a day. But they will go away without taking loads of chemicals. Also, the atmosphere is so wonderful that I often fall asleep.

I had only had acupuncture once before, years ago and it did nothing for me. So on the advice of Myra, the person who buts my hair I checked it out. I have now been there maybe about 10 times, I went there for an issue with my ear and an issue about some compulsive behavior. I am amazed. This stuff really works! My ear issue has cleared up and my compulsive behavior is almost gone. I plan on keeping going back for 2-3 times a week just because I'm pleased with the results.
I love the fact that there are others getting treatment with me. I have been to all of the people there (I think) and they are all familiar with my issues and nice and wonderful. -

Ok, I haven't gotten treatment from this acupuncture clinic but I wanted to post a review to get the word out because this clinic operates on sliding scale fees! That's right, sliding scale, between $15-35 per session. The acupuncturist at this clinic are doing a great service to the whole community by offering these services at a reasonable cost. Since I can actually afford it, I might go! I'll report back when I do.

whitney has a calm manner and makes everyone feel welcome. oh yeah she really is a very skilled practioner.
the sliding scale is a relief. . .their fees are very modest. i try and budget so when i go for a treament i can give a little extra cash. -

I have been to OAP on numerous occasions for affordable, fantastic acupuncture. Whitney is absolutely one of the best practitioners in the East Bay, she has a flawless technique, the needles are inserted painlessly and the energy sensation is immediate and effective. I'm always comfortable in the recliners, with a cozy blanket... napping is impossible. As an acupuncture student, not only do I appreciate fellow practitioners, but the low cost clinic is always appreciated on a student budget. I leave stress free, no aches or pains, and much calmer. Check it out!

I was skeptical of acupuncture, but I've known a lot of people who use it and love it, so I figured I would give it a shot. I'm so glad I did because I can't tell you how amazing it is. I have found so much relief for my issues - from insomnia to allergies to stress. I also received amazing treatment for my sprained ankle - they cut the pain in half in just one session.
Whitney is very warm and kind, with a manner that immediately put me at ease. I have not worked with Roselle, but I've heard raves about her from friends who also use the clinic. And because the cost is so inexpensive, I'm able to go weekly, which makes a huge difference. Even my husband noticed a change in me - I'm much calmer, less stressed and generally happier. This stuff is magic! -

I'm just back from my first visit to OAP and thought I'd join the rest of the bunch in singing the praises of this wonderful resource. I'd wanted to try acupuncture for many years after hearing so many positive stories of what it has done for people but the cost always seemed prohibitive. After being a stress bomb for the last two year and knowing my endocrine system was completely of of whack I decided to give it a try. The prices could not be any more reasonable. Just $15 to $35 a visit, you decide what you can afford. The first visit is an additional $15 for the intake process. Yes, it's a shared space and that did give me pause but it wasn't too bad. It was very quite for the most part. After I had been there about 20 minutes a very chatty woman came in and was laughing and talking and it was disruptive. Oh well. She finally stopped and I went back to my semi-dosing. I wasn't sure how long to stay so I asked Diana and she said it was an intuitve thing and I would probably know. She was right. When we first started I was a bit cold but once the needles went it I warmed up and stayed warm for about half an hour then I started to cool down and feel "lighter" somehow. I felt ready to go. Diana was constantly checking on me (in a good way) and she passed by and looked at me and I told her I was ready so she came over and took the needled out then gave me some advise on things to do the rest of the day like rest and drink more fluids than usual. Just a good overall experience. I am going to go twice a week for the next month and then reevalutate. True, I have nothing to guage my experience against but it was definitely a good one. I feel grateful to have been able to try this method of healing out at such a wonderful price. I felt completely comfortable with the knowledge and experience of my practitioner and look forward to going back.
If acupuncture interests you in the slightest you have nothing to lose by trying OAP. The place and people have wonderful energy, are very warm and welcoming, and I didn't feel like a complete idiot on my first go round. I left feeling great and surely that counts for a whole lot in my book. I can't wait to see how I feel a month or two from now. -

I have tried Oakland Acupuncture Project two times to address health issues. This alternative treatment has helped me. The place is very clean and cozy. The staff is nice, and they seem to really care. The needles are very thin, I barely felt them. After first treatment, I felt happy and pain free. They are reasonably priced. If you don't try it, you won't know if it will work for you. I would recommend this place to anyone.

I went on the recommendations of other yelpers.I was experiencing low back pain and must say positive things about the space, the way I was treated and the type of business model used .I have always gotten relief by using a certain acupuncture technique and told them the type used(which is quite common). The response was they didn't do that ( after I already paid). What the heck, might as well try.Didn't get much relief though!
