I don't drink much any more. Drinking at a bar in San Francisco and waking up in somebody's bed in Fremont on the next morning was not a good thing, especially when I do not remember how I travelled.
I visited this restaurant as a party of five yesterday.
This place is unfortunately located right in front of a mortuary.
When I sat at the table, I noticed Irish swords were hanging over my head. I thought, "Well, if the sword should fall off, somebody would take me to the mortuary and I can save transportation fee."
I ordered beer battered Fish and Chips (around $14.00).
The portion was very generous and I could not finish it. I checked other dishes but they were all generous portions.
The cod inside was a little bit dry but still, the crispy beer batter was so good that I must say this was one of the best Fish and Chips in my life so far.
Chips were, I guessed they were twice-fried, amazingly crispy so if you have a denture, make it sure that you use "Super Poligrip".
The service was constantly good and girls were very friendly.
I know a lot of people are really loopy over this place, but, speaking as a booze-craving mick myself, I've never quite gotten it. For example, the last time I was there it was just me and the bartender. I related to him an extremely amusing anecdote concerning James Joyce. Appropriate, no? Well, the bartender gave every indication of completely failing to enjoy or appreciate my highly entertaining narrative. In fact, I'm not at all certain that he was even listening.
I really can't see myself going there any more after that.
O'Reilly's is pretty awesome. The ambiance is fabulous. It takes you to another place. I love how dimly lit it is, and all of the Irish stuff covering the wall. The bar and restaurant are separated by a wall, and there is a nook in the back to lure your sweetie into. The place makes you longing for Ireland.
When you go, you definitely want to mix the drinking with the eating. While the food is good, it can be a little hard to handle without beer. All that starch begs to be washed down with either a nice Guinness or a Smithwick's. I rather enjoyed the Gaelic Colcannon, a mix of veggie and mashed potato topped off with goat cheese. It is super tasty.
Don't forget to wait for the Guinness.
Totally love it here! Love enjoying a Guinness here, and also love all the decorations and design, very cool, like I am in Ireland! Awesome prices too. Great place to kick back and enjoy some fun and a drink! or two or three!
This place is pretty huge! There are little alcoves where you can have a little bit more privacy for those smaller groups to hang out or you can lounge by the pool tables. Patrons are fairly nice and drinks are DIRT CHEAP. Two cran-vodkas for $11?! Unheard of! That's a reason all in it's own to come back to this place.
I wasn't very impressed with my food here recently. The waitress was very nice and patient with us when 2 of our group were running behind, and even offered to bring us dinner menus when I wasn't sure about the brunch offerings (I was just being indecisive that day), so bonus brownie points for her. It's just that my food wasn't very good. At all.
A bit off topic, but I have one small gripe about their brunch offerings: this is San Francisco, remember your vegetarian diners! For instance, most brunch items had bacon or black pudding. How about making those items available without the meat for a cheaper price? I get tired of ordering the veggie omelette every place I go. The Irish breakfast looked good, but without meat, not at that price. Soooo I decided on the veggie omelette but with cheddar instead of swiss. What I got tucked into my egg pocket was probably 6 ounces of swiss cheese and limp vegetables swimming in oil. Gross on so many levels. I'm not much for sending food back, so I ate most of my potatoes and some of the fluffy eggs, but steered clear of the the enormous gob of the wrong cheese and slimy vegetables.
I really liked the Irish soda bread that was served to us while we waited, and my dining companions seemed to like their meals just fine, plus the waitress was great, so I may give it another shot. The fries that came out with my roommate's burger were awesome, so I'd probably steer clear of the breakfast-y choices and go for the lunch fare.
But definitely go for drinks and a nice table in the sun in the afternoon, which was exactly what we did after brunch. That was really nice.
I'd give this spot 3.5 stars (but no 1/2 stars etc etc.).
The best thing about this pub, I thought, was all of the little nooks and crannies that small groups could sit in and drink/eat. 'My' crew and I had potato skins, wings and beer here last night. The waitress was pleasant enough. Talk about kitsch on the walls, wow it's everywhere.
I'll have to go back again and try more food. It may be jus a little uh, grimey here. But, I guess, what pub isn't.
Price was right. Go drink and eat here!!!
This bar is awesome. Hilarious reading the reviews of chicks stating, "not much of a beer selection" and "I don't really like beer" or "it was a dark Irish bar" and "there were drunk people in there."
Take it from a man who was born and raised in Irish pubs. This place is legit. They have plenty of beer including a fine stout or two. Yes it gets crowded which is kind of nice, Taylor...sheesh. And believe it or not, some people go to Irish pubs to get their drink on.
Come to think of it, this is an ideal place to escape typical whiny SF leftist Protestants. Hail O'Reilly's!!
First off, this review is SOLELY for their food. I've come here strictly for drinking and it was what you'd expect, lots of drunk north beach explorers and not so friendly bartenders ("do you have any house cocktails?", "This isn't that kind of bar, sweetheart"), Um, I do believe you have a full bar, Sir.
Aaaaanyway,
So, I went here for a late Brunch (3 pm) on a Sunday with the roomie. I wasn't expecting an amazing meal, but geeze louise!!! What I really had an issue with was the food and beverage quality. You know when you can tell that OJ is coming out of a soda gun? No? Well it tastes moldy and weird. Thats how it tastes. You know what Ketchup tastes like when its in a Heinz bottle but is clearly not? No? Well it tastes like the industrial sized can that it was dispersed from tastes like. I know these sound like petty things to nit pick about, but really, these are corners that shouldn't be cut.
Our meals, Veg Eggs Benedict for me, Shepard's pie for the roomie, were fine, not good, but fine. The avocado on my Benedict was rock hard, like so hard that i feel bad for the sous that had to prepare it. The Shepard's pie was "Meh", as my roomie so eloquently expressed.
So, I would never come here again for brunch or any other meal, and am cautious to come here unless I'm in the mood for beer or hate juice (whiskey).
Really fun environment! The bartenders could cheer up a bit but they get the job done and in an efficient manner. Perhaps it was due to the North Beach Pub Crawl they were a little busy and frustrated. Regardless, I love the inside of this place and the people in it! Outdoor seating, attached restaurant, and lots of nooks and crannies to sit in and enjoy your drinks. Not overly fanchy or pricey, a real nice spot to sit back and enjoy some good company over beer, cocktails, or whatever your fancy. Our cosmo shots were delish and we will definitely return when we're in the area.
We wandered here to end off the Day Drinking with an outdoor table on a warm evening with everybody in good spirits. We all had a blast. Yes, everybody there was piss'd up drunk but was in very good form - everybody we met was super friendly. Our group sat outside to start, but as the night wore on, a few of us wandered inside solo and made new friends.
Dark pub, nooks and crannies here and there, plenty of indoor tables, a few outdoor tables so if your group snags one, you feel lucky.
On this particular night, we were treated to a fine specimen performing a strip tease in the window of an apartment across the street. I'm not usually one for strip teases, but since he wasn't a *professional* and clearly just someone who'd had a few too much, I enjoyed the revelry. [He showed up at the bar about a half hour later and was met with a cheering crowd of new-found fans.]
Hey, you on the mini-cooper, well done.
Ok, I liked the ambiance of this pub. But I just want to say I love the seats under staircase. I felt like Harry Potter. Only with beer instead of shockingly appalling child abuse.
This place has been a favorite of mine for a good while.
Drinks on tap go for $5.50 and a pretty decent selection if your in to the Irish thing. I am. Every time I journey into this place its like an adventure. The crowd is always friendly, with quite the diverse age range. Mostly a younger crowed though. Dress code, t-shirt and jeans will do. Music?? they have an electronic jukebox type thing. The bar area does get a tad bit crowded but there is more seating in the back.
Its more of a dark, dimly lit setting. stuff is on the walls everywhere. Candle lit tables setting the mood in the dinning area. This place has a great location and its close to everything. 4 stars for good vibes and 9 times out of 10 you wont leave sober.
For some people, this would be a great bar. For me, it was just crowded and full of drunk older people. REALLY drunk older people. Not like, haha we're all having so much FUN kind of drunk people, but more like: "So I said FUCK YOU Mary! and.... you know what? I love your hair like that. No seriously. OHMYGAWD is that Billie's friend from that one place down the street?! You remember him??? He pissed on my shoes!"
On one hand totally entertaining. On the other I wasn't near drunk enough to appreciate the craziness coming from all angles.
It's a small bar and it is covered in cool pictures and memorabilia. The bartenders MUST pour strong drinks because there were a lot of fucked up people hanging out.
I bet if you came on a weeknight or earlier in the evening, it would be a cozy fun Irish bar to spend some time in. Friday night around 11, not so much.
After discovering that Sotto Mare was closed on Sundays, my gf and I walked down the street to O'Reilly's after seeing the huge oyster sign on the corner. We first walked into the dim cottage-like environment and sat ourselves. The waitress apologized and was very friendly. We opted for the twice fried chips, a dozen oysters, clam chowder, and beer. I enjoyed everything that we ordered. The chowder was creamy and had a good amount of clam chunks, the twice fried chips were crispy and lightly salted, the oysters tasted fresh, and the beer was cold and refreshing.
parking can be tough but there are $10 lots nearby.
As a disclaimer, this isnt really my type of bar...dirty, dark, irish pub (unless its st pattys day, as i hate beer)...either way, we stopped in on our way to another happy hour as i'd heard they had good bloodies...
Well, the bloodies were ok, not great, and they were $7 something each, at happy hour??
Also, $20 minimum tab, so even with paying for my friend and my drinks together, still didnt hit the tab, but didnt want to buy yet another rip off bloody with great happy hours around!
Don't think i'd go back, unless they were having a special on the bloodies (as they arent that great anyway).
St Patrick's Day 2008 at O'Reilly's? Pretty fuckin' fun

You need to have the stage set for you.
Yesterday I took the bus from NYC to DC with a friend - to help them get through a personal issue. Early this morning, I was on a flight from DC to San Francisco (new home and first class).
I now had to meet my better-half for a quick and early lunch and she picked this place. To be honest, I am usually concerned when she decides where we should go but this time she hit the mark.
The service was almost spot on and the food was not bad at all. I even had a clover in my Guinness. In the end, I can recommend them for a causal last minute place to pop in and spend a few hours.
Go O'Reilly's!!!

I first dined at O'Reilly's 8 years ago. I'm a Milwaukee native and the concept of the 'Friday fish fry' is very endemic to our culture. Not the healthiest meal we could choose, but it when away, it's hard to ignore the craving. My wife and I still speak about enjoying our meal here. Good solid memory. I can't remember much more, but after nearly a decade, I imagine O'Reilly's is still worth the high praise!
My first experience here was very appropriate, that being St Pattie's Day Weekend... I met some wonderful ladies for an Irish breakfast before we began the days boozing.
Disclaimer: I am a redhead, but I am not Irish at all (I get the redness from the Scotts in my family). I still love Irish pubs because I feel like I fit in.. and of course, during St Patties celebrations, I am 100% IRISH
I ordered the eggs benedict.. which are so much better with an Irish twist.. Imagine that delicious hollandaise sauce on top of irish bacon and soda bread... YUM YUM YUM
We had breakfast outside, but made our way inside for a drink afterwards. I spent a good amount of time staring at the wall... Were you drunk already, you may ask.. No, no I was not.. they just have this amazing original mural on the back wall.. Fabulous :)
A member of my party made the mistake of ordering a round of "Irish car bombs" FAIL... so much for cultural competence.. but hey... keep the Guiness flowing!
We stopped by here for a quick beer. I love this place because they have Boddingtons on tap. I have never eaten the food here, though once about a year ago, we had oyster shooters and they were a little to fishy for my taste. We didn't have them again.
The music is really loud and the selection is occasionally annoying. I looked around for a juke box but couldn't find one.
The decor is so interesting. I told my husband if we ever had enough money to build our own bar in our house I would want to replicate the look of this place.
Looking for the perfect spot to get your loud leprechaun on this saint Patrick's day? Look no further than O'Reilly's Pub for the authentic Irish experience. For a $5.00 cover you'll receive all the drunken debauchery and darkest Guinness your little green heart desires. The bar is open all day for you to "get your Irish out". The staff is attentive, fun, and some oddly resemble leprechauns........
For the perfect spot to celebrate, you'll find your pot o' gold this Saint Patrick's at O'Reilly's Pub and Restaurant!
So many chotchkeys on the wall.
A perfectly poured Guiness is a highly underrated skill. Having an O'Reilly's bartender pour you a Guinness never get's old, it's like seeing Tiger taking a golf swing, Joe Montana throwing a perfect slant to Jerry Rice, it's like hearing an O'bama speech. It's a poetic and beautiful thing, and only $4.50.
I'll be back for the broiled oysters.
O'Reilly's is one of my favorite Irish Pubs. The oysters are great and I had the shephards pie last time and loved it. However, I don't usually go for food. This place is better for a night of drinking great Irish session beer. The place is always pack which is sort of a nice draw for this place.
Well I've never eaten the food here, but I have had many drinks.
I remember the first time I came to OReillys it was St. Patrick's Day. A group of my friends and I decided we really wanted to go to an Irish pub, well we got an Irish pub alright. We had walked here from another pub a few blocks away. I wore heels that night, I am still apologizing to my feet. I don't think we paid a cover (as at the time my memory was fuzzy) and if we did it wasn't more than $5 bucks or so. The line was long but it was St. Patrick's Day and all. I was finally happy and forgot about my feet once I had gotten my beer. I don't normally drink dark beer but I figured I needed something for the occasion. So I chose a Guinness. I still remember finding a flour leaf clover, stamped on the top of the foam from the beer. OK that is impressive. Maybe I'm easily amused ,but still.
I have been back since and I always seem to have a good time. The bouncers and bartenders are always friendly. The crowd is decent and the drinks are moderate. You're sure to have a good time.
I think this place has great beer and I like the atmosphere a lot (I'm Irish), but everyone in our group found the food to be pretty disappointing. I'll be back, but just for drinking.
My honey introduced me to O'Reilly's. (He had ventured there on a self created pub tour of SF.)
The first time I got the fish and chips and the most recent time the corned beef and cabbage. (I happen to be one of those people who likes corned beef and cabbage year round.) Both meals were delicious and satisfying. My boyfriend got their shepherd's pie and ate every last bite of it so I'm assuming that it was also tasty.
This is the place to go if you are looking for a good pint of Guinness and some Irish eats. The bar and restaurant are separated which is nice and the environment feels cozy. To top if off, both times we have been there we have been waited on by actual Irish folks. Bonus!
Oysters are really good but didnt really have much beer selection to go with it. I know I shouldnt expect to find light beer in an Irish bar, but it would be nice. Price wise, it was a little pricy, expected for the city. Service was sub par, you really have to holler at them to get their attention.
This is the place to be for St. Patrick's Day!
Great selection of beer, I think they have some Irish imported ones that are very unique. The crowd is fun too.
Their food and their drinks were just great!!!!!! We got back really late yesterday after one of the best St. Paddy's Day parties ever!!!!!
I can't tolerate Guinness (I kept that to myself), but HARP is one of my favorite beers, and I had more than my share on 3/17/09.
We really liked the atmosphere, all the friendly employees, and of course the food. I only tried the ground lamb appetizer, because I was more focused on my beer, but I will be back here very soon and sample more things from their menu. They get a huge thumbs up from me!!!!!
I went here last Saturday by myself (gasp!) and ended up having a very good time. I loved the selection of music they play... U2, Cake, Oasis, other 90s hits I grew up listening to that really made me feel at home. The bartenders (the main ones anyway) are all Irish, but as some of the other reviewers have noticed, they are not the friendliest people in the world. All my attempts at conversation kind of fizzled out after about 15 seconds because of their unresponsiveness. I can understand if they're busy but at that time there were only 5 people sitting at the bar and they weren't exactly being slammed with drink orders. But besides from all that, the patrons there were friendly, tipsy and willing to talk, they have at least 2 televisions with different sports going (Including European football/soccer) and I absolutely love the decor of the place. AND... get this! I don't drink a lot, so I just ordered a Shirley Temple... and I could not believe it... FREE REFILLS on soda! So I paid my $2.50 one time and got to sit at the bar for hours talking to and giggling at the ones beside me getting tipsier and tipsier while I drank from my bottomless pit of sweet soda. Can't get any better than that!
Many a time I have walked by O'Reilly's and noticed people eating delicious looking pub food outside on the front patio. Again and again I reminded myself that I wanted to try it. Finally, I made it in on a Thursday night.
Being the fan of trying a lot of dishes "family style" we ordered tons of food. Of course an ice cold Blue Moon quenched my thirst and an odd thick "drowned" bread was served. It was way to filling for me and kind of tasted like cornbread.
Onto the main event! We ordered fish and chips, a gorgonzola cheese burger, and fries to boot! The burger was my favorite dish. Really well cooked, good flavor, and well dressed. The fish and chips were very good as well, but I felt a little greasy afterward. All in all it was roughly $20 each, with drinks. Can't beat that!
This place makes me want to kiss the blarney stone!
Great place to have a good Irish breakfast. The bread is delicious. The service is good and it's not as crowded as Mama's. I recommend it.
I like like a block away from here. uh-oh.. I can see my future of an alcoholic coming! This place is legit. My girlies and I didnt have to pay a cover (NIOCEEE) and there were a ton of cuties to perve at.
OK now to beer- started off with a Stella, then my friends and I shared a pint of Sierra (not a huge fan but for 5 bucks I won't complain...I wasn't paying anyways). After I decided to try Murphy's stout.. oh my goshholymotheroffuck! Now I'm a big dark beer fan this shit is dark! But it had a nice light taste as opposed to I guess Guinness. I had half a pint of that and I was good for the next two hours.
I'm a fan... my tummy won't be after I start becoming a regular at this place :-/
This place was pretty good. It has that old SF smell in the building (which you get used to after a few beers.)
The fish and chips I HEARD were the BEST thing ever at O'Reilly's. They were pretty good. Probably the best that I've had in SF so far. They will not, however, top Jay's Fish & Chips in Santa Maria. Nobody can top them. It's just sad that they retired and closed shop.
So I guess if I'm craving Fish and Chips, I'll have to come here - for now.
I wandered over here with a group of friends during the summer after we finished with dinner and wanted to hang out with some smexy Spanish boys...rowr!
The last bar was way too noisy and crowded, and this wasn't much better...however girls don't have to pay a cover! That's pretty awesome :) The people here are pretty friendly too, and rather drunk. I liked the music they were playing and there's a lower level too with lots of seating inbetween and fans to cool off the dancers.
I can't complain much since it was free to get in, and the crowd was pretty cool. If I wanted something to do in this area, I'd probably stop in here and check it out again. Woot woot.
Unfortunately, O'Reilly's has changed their brunch menu significantly...which really was the shining star of the place for me and my Sunday brunch cohorts. They took the boxty off the menu and started using IMITATION crab in their crab benedict. YUCK!
That being said, my gay husband and I had a fabulous reunion today at O'Reilly's, soaking up the sun and the scene while sharing a smoked salmon benedict and Bloody Marys. Oh and lots of beer.
O'Reilly's is also now CASH ONLY. Ugh. They really are making it tough to like this place.

If I'm having brunch is at 3:30pm and I'm starting my day with a Bloody Mary, is that wrong?

This is my second time in about 4-5 years I've eaten here. You can sit and eat outside on the cafe tables or inside. Again it was a beautiful day to sit out and dine. I came here the Thursday before St. Patrick's Day.
I had the Shepherd's Pie, one of my favorite Irish dishes. Excellent!! This was an individual serving in a deep dish. Bottom layered with ground lamb. A second layer with carrots and other veggies. And topped off with whipped mashed potatoes with drizzled cheddar cheese between. Then baked. My friend had a very generous helping of corned beef and cabbage. He sure enjoyed his dish. And he can be very critical about what he eats. His corned beef and cabbage included mashed potatoes and veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, more). He noticed that the veggies were also cooked in the brine of the corned beef. He thought that was clever and a great way to add the right touch of flavor to the veggies. Next time I would like to try their Irtish lamb stew on the menu.
The service was great. The waitress and others that worked there were true Irish and spoke with an authentic brogue/accent. Outside and inside had lots to admire and to read on the walls. Another customer had their dog seated on the ground next to them. Very comfortable and welcoming atmosphere at O'Reilly's. I love North Beach and the stroll afterward on Columbus Avenue was a nice touch. I haven't tried Fiddler on the Green that's not far, on nearby Columbus Avenue. But O'Reilly's Shepherd's Pie is just as good, if not better, than Fiddler's Green in Millbrae.
O'Reilly's is a wonderful treat for anyone to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Or enjoy on any day.
I'd have to agree with Vassie. But maybe it was the night I was out (day before NYE), or maybe it was the time (10pm), or who knows?
I was relatively excited getting into O'Reillys - no line, cool interior....until I actually went to the bar and was notified that they didn't serve IRISH CAR BOMBS. WTF mate?
That pretty much did it for me.
