Review from Elaine N.
I really wanted to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday at a bar with either pizza or wings, big screen TVs, and some delicious beers. I knew it was next to impossible to go to any big chain restaurants such as Yard House or Hooters. However, I made an attempt for Yard House anyway. Luckily the place was too crowded, otherwise I would have not found this hidden gem that is less than 2 miles from my house!
It was all so perfect. I walked in, and thought that there was no seats left. The only empty table had a set of car keys on it. Luckily for me, the previous seaters had forgotten their keys there (unfortunate for them)! The table was mine for the taking!
What was even more amazing, was that they had free hot dogs and burgers for Super Bowl! My lucky day or what?? I should also mention how delicious these hot dogs and burgers were. Yes, they were free but I would pay a good amount of money for them. They were HUGE and everything tasted fresh. Free burgers, hot dogs, potato chips.. All went well with my beer and the game.
There were probably 11+ TVs hanging across the walls. Every single one had the Super Bowl game. My waitress was great and friendly, the people were fun... What a perfect way to enjoy my very first Super Bowl. Yes, that's right.. I have never watched the Super Bowl in full until today. This bar definitely had something to do with it.
Other than my great experience, this place also seems to have great deals on other nights. On Wednesdays, they have their Shephard's pie special and free pool!! (FREE!) I can't wait to see what other fun events they have in store. St. Patrick's day is coming up, and you know where I'll be at! O'Connell, you are now my favorite local bar! -

i had a first date here this evening and this place was fun. we watched the USC / Stanford game and like the other reviews say, this place has a really nice TV on every square inch of the place! i have never seen so many TVs in a bar in my life!
The waitress was great and super friendly, the beer was great, I had an IPA which was delicious, and Blue Moon Pumpkin beer and that was also great. We had prime rib and boy was it delicious. The french fries were great, the veggies were fresh, not from a can or frozen, the salad was great. One way i judge is by the croutons and these were top shelf! The music on the juke box was great, the people--mostly all regulars--were super friendly and chatting my date and i up giving us tips on whats good (everything!)
The only bummer part was my date! what an argumentative SOB. and he kept staring at my (*)(*)s......
Oh well, OConnells was great and I will go back--just not with him... -

This is a locals bar and they really don't give a flying F*** about Yelp but none the less I must Yelp it.
Every angle you neck can turn there is a TV with sports on it so TV/sports/Fantasy Football/ check.
Food and beer are both cheap and good. Check
There is no shame walking in this place hungover while still trying to remember the previous night. None at all. It's nice and dark and a beer is 30 secs away.
I give this a 5 star because I judge it against other dive sports bars. Not trendy bars or ESPN Zones. This is where people will remember your name if you go enough.
I like to swing by this place when I am in my hometown of HB and I don't feel like doing the Downtown scene. -

This is a great little whole in the wall pub. It has the easy going small town (everybody knows everybody) feel to it, even if it's your first time stopping by. They have at least 25 tv's all playing enough sports to fill anyone's pallet. As far as pallet goes they offer traditional Irish plates as well as many other diverse food of good taste and quality. Good mixed drinks and beer at a decent price too

This wouldn't be my first choice of bars to hang out at. Like Mary R said, "Everyone kinda looks the same..." Not a whole lot of diversity going on here. I tend not to hang out at places where I'm the only one with the natural tan.
Anyways, they have draft beers here. A pitcher of Newcastle is about $16. We finished our pitcher and were off like a prom dress.Listed in: Surf City, USA, You hate clubs and fancy…, Where is the Danimal?

What is this vibe in here? What is it? Oh yeah, everyone kinda looks the same...
...like they're in the 40's pretending to be in their 30's with backwards baseball caps and high fiving each other while saying things like "dude"...
...a birthday party for a bunch of fifty-somethings....
...no pool table and it's kind of cluttered and claustrophobic ...**EDIT** there WAS a pool table, I was blinded by the shiny white foreheads....
...but they have draft beer and clean restroom. +1
Oh, it was alright I guess...Listed in: Bar Adventures

Friday night about to hit the road to Vegas we had a little postponement in our plans so Corrie C. and I met up at O'Connell's to kill a few pints before making the trek.
The bar is in a tiny strip mall with a 7-11 and two forgettable fast food restaurants. The parking lot is laid out strangely and when we drove up there were two cop cars backed in in front of 7-11...DUI bust much?
We walked up to the well lit doorway and stepped inside to find a half asleep middle aged bouncer and a local crowd. The bathroom was very bright and clean. It appeared to be more of a restaurant than a bar.
We found a two top in the back corner by the kitchen door and sat down. The service was nice and quick...though when I ordered "the largest Bud Light you have" I was met with the fact that they don't have Bud Light on draft...what? Ok, then the largest Blue Moon you have...she returns with a pint. She could have mentioned that they didn't serve anything on draft larger than a pint and I would've gotten a Bud Light Bottle. My plan was quantity over quality here.
After a few minutes I figured I'd better eat something because I'm sure I'll be boozy all weekend. I ordered potato skins and they came out quickly. They were the typical fried potato shells but they were filled with chili (like Hormel) and that threw me. I would've preferred bacon and cheese and onions and when I read the menu I figured it was diced Ortega chili or something. This is the second mis-communication of the evening.
Behind the bouncer in the yellow jacket is a huge sign stating "No Gambling, No Dancing and No Spitting (?)" Uh what? They had quite a few TVs and a bar top running through the middle of the bar to accommodate more seats. Finally our partner in crime called us and we tabbed out at about $16 for a pint of Coors Light, pint of Blue Moon and an order of potato skins. I noticed the crowd got younger as the night wore on as well. Outside the aforementioned cops were conducting a DUI test on some poor bastard.

O'Connell's- oh how I've missed you!!
I used to live walking distance away from this bar- so it was kind of my hang-out... The bartenders were always very friendly and attentive, drinks were well priced and most of the food was pretty good. The servers were always average, most of them have kind of an attitude- so I would sit at the bar as often as I could.
The owners are there often- helping out- and I think that's great!! You can tell they take pride in their place.
We stopped by yesterday for football Sunday- packed house, cool people, good time. The one complaint is that our sandwiches (pastrami and ruben) had minimal meat- but everything else was great!!Listed in: To catch the game!!

Come on, I am the first one to review O'Connell's? Really?
Great neighborhood place in a strip mall. I used to fear strip malls, but no longer - in typical SoCal dichotomy, it's nestled in the back corner of a 7-11 anchored strip mall, surrounded by a hair salon that's rarely open, a dentist, a framing place, and a pole dancing lesson studio. Yep, I said pole dancing lesson studio.
Green walls, long bar, cold beers, pool table, jukebox - your typical ingredients for a great neighborhood bar. It's like the Cheers of HB. I bet everyone says that about their "go-to" place. Tons of TVs, all the sports packages - great during baseball season except for the Red Sox fan base it has (the great owners are from the Cape in MA.) They do tolerate us Yankee fans, tho.
BUT....the difference between this and my other favorite watering holes is that the people here are fantastic, great staff and bartenders, and truly friendly patrons. And, the food here is actually good. From sandwiches to ribs and crab legs - I've never had a bad meal here.
When I can't fathom the thought of straightening my hair or mustering up an outfit that I can't wear a pair of sneakers with, I'll be on a bar stool here.
You should be, too.
One minor note - the weekend late night crowd can vary widely, and occasionally steer into the beer-amped testosterone zone, especially around the pool table. -

This is a great place for watching sporting events. A plethora of televisions in all directions and a menu that is All-Pro. The food is fantastic from the sampler platter to the steak. Prices are reasonable and the crowd is a light fun crowd, with no shortage of regulars, but behaved and fun.
Monica the day bartender is a treat with a good sense of humor and plenty to chat about. Enjoy it...we do... -
Review from Wesley P.

From the dawn of time, man has been on a quest to get f*cked up. We have ventured from watering hole to discotheque on an endless attempt at finding the right home for our imbibinization (yes, I just made that word up). This man has been to loud nightclubs, and he said "too hot." He has been to impersonal dives with not a friendly face in sight and said "this one's too cold." One day, your hero wandered into O'Connell's, sat down and ordered a pitcher of O'Connell's Honey Blonde and said "this one's just right."
O'Connell's is just a bar with some excellent grub. As far as Fountain Valley is concerned (this is right on the "border"), this is as close as you can get to Cheers. They've got as much television screen as they have wall space and a good selection brews on tap. I believe the pitcher of honey blonde was about $10 and it's a lifesaver. Food-wise, I go with the chicken cheese steak and onion rings for ~$7. The chicken is tender, the cheese is applied liberally and the bread is warmly toasted. The onion rings have a great, thick coating and are fried to a dark crisp. Get that grub in your belly, and most any alcohol you consume is gonna have to fight like Braveheart to get out. -
Review from Kevin P.
Huntington Beach, CA
I've only been here three times, but I've had a great experiences. The bartenders are pretty attentive, the booze is cheap, and they have surprisingly good food. No, it's not the French Laundry. It's not supposed to be, it's a bar.
It's a great place to go for any special event. Championships are on? Go in there and check out the million TVs on the walls. St. Patrick's day? Head over. Usually there will be somewhat themed food too.
I really don't have anything negative to say about this place. Cheap, good, good service. Location is pretty typical dive bar location - in a strip mall. Just stop by one night (or day, I won't judge). -
Review from Dan H.
Whoa, got called out by one of the owners a few days ago for my previous yelp. Hey, I still gave it 3 stars!
Anyway, she said she was truly hurt by my yelpings and wished I had spoken to her about the "issues" so that she could remedy them. Well I wish it was that easy, as I have had mixed results in the past at other establishments. In fact, one of the btenders at Woodies still hates me for complaining about him to the owners, and that was 2 or 3 years ago!
But MOL (Ms. Owner Lady) was truly sincere and we'll see if her mean waitress softens up a bit.
The recap;
MOL - Hey Dan (1st time she has called me by my name in the 14 months I have been a patron), so who's the worst service person in HB? (By the way, not my description, was simply responding to jv.'s yelp).
Dan - Uh, what? Oh I guess you read yelp ay? Um, that one right there.
MOL - I wish you would have told me before you put it out there. We were truly hurt, as we take our business very seriously, I think you would agree.
Dan - Hey I love this bar, but the service for food, especially at the tables can be lousy. And that one there is just awful.
MOL - Well I just wished you had spoken to me 1st. And regarding the juke box; the ABC dictates how loud we can play it.
Huh? I'll have to take her word for that, however the volume was pretty loud that day, but the music was "nice" stuff. It always seemed when me and other patrons or a now ex-btender played the "harder" edged tunes the volume was ratcheted way down.
I do appreciate the sincerity of MOL, and love the fact she and her husband are so passionate about running a great, fun, and clean local bar. I actually do like the owners, even though they are hardcore Red Sux fans, and will continue to patronize unless they 86 me for my yelps! All of the btenders are great, as well as MOST of the servers, so I am bumping it up 1 star.
See you there sometime.......hopefully.

In an attempt to try something different (meaning aside from BJ's or El Torito) I came across this place on Yelp and Google. The reviews were more than favorable. I went there with a couple friends and we had a good time. Food prices were good and my meal was as good as a $12 steak dinner (roll, salad, rice, steamed vegetables, and a medium cooked steak) could get.
A few pitchers of beer and one patron shot later with Depeche Mode and Metallica playing in the background during the course of the night I had a feeling that soon I would visit this sports bar again. With a constant flow of customers it seemed that everyone who entered was having a good time.
-lots of TVs
-service was good
-food was good
-variety of music (might have been a jukebox) -

Going to O'Connells for the first time last week, I was soo impressed when I observed one of the servers. Her name was Teri. I've been in the the restaurant business for many years. Not only was she overloaded with the tables she was serving, her attitude was friendly, a smile on her face and so very nice to everyone she came in contact with. If I still owned my restaurant, I believe I would try to steel her away.
The next time I was in there, I talked to some of the regulars and they all said the reason they were in there was because of Teri. They only came in when it was her shift. She is a gem and I hope the owners appreciate her. -

$3.70 breakfast from 9am-1pm on weekends is great. Nice stiff bloody mary, good mimosa, friendly staff. The potatoes were a little well done, but for the size of the meal and the price, I really did not mind, and ate them up after putting a bit of ketchup on 'em.
It took this great breakfast deal to finally get my ass in there. We just moved in right across the street, so hitting the breakfast drinks pretty hard was ok, we just walked ;)
Tons of great regulars making you feel so welcome!

I love this place. This is our favorite local weekend breakfast place. The breakfast is killer. They used to have a breakfast special for $3.79, but then they raised it to a whopping $4! (LOL). They only serve breakfast on weekends. The $4 breakfast special includes eggs, bacon/sausage, hash browns, and toast. Great portions and you can't beat the price. Wash it down with a few screwdriver's and your set.
The service is super quick....especially if you have Terry as your server. She is the absolute best!
I haven't been there at night, but I hear great things about it also. As for the previous reviewer who said there were cops in the parking lot....of course, it's HB! -

Locals only?!?!
Not sure what happened on the day that we decided to throw a farewell get together here, but it was definitely not the friendly atmosphere that i thought we were going to get from reading the yelp reviews. The coworker wanted something in HB his hometown mind you.
We came in to see an empty table and sat down, and the waitress came over and said that the table was reserved, while holding the reserve sign to place down on the table. We figured that our coworker who planned the event had called in because she said she did and we asked for the name on the reservation. The bartender just looked at us and said no its not for you its for the locals. Considering we were from HB we weren't really sure what that meant but she was not letting us sit there. So we got up and moved to this little section they have behind the pool table.
We were given another waitress who was pretty cool, but obviously the other waitress did not want to deal with us. In any case the food was good the drinks were good, but the atmosphere was one of hatred. We weren't being loud or crazy or anything, just eating and having a good time, and when we did a cheers, one of the patrons yelled GO HOME.
Not sure if it had something to do with some of the coworkers were asian or not, and we were thinking about leaving...but that would have just given them what they wanted.
All in all we made it a fun time for ourselves, and spent a lot of money there so hopefully they will be nicer if we ever decide to come back...i doubt i will though the nicest person to me was some guy waiting to use the restroom.
I wanted the Cheers environment!!! -

I love this place. The atmosphere is the best. Weekend breakfast special is easy too, 2 eggs, 2 meats, 2 toasts, and potatoes and of course the bloody mary's are great. i come to this place regularly, it's even kid friendly at decent hours. I wouldn't have my kid there at 10 on a Friday, Sat or Sun, but for breakfast and lunch, it's perfect. they have tons of TV's to watch all kinds of sports. my roommate loves that they play NASCAR. good times are always had here.

This place is definitely a sports bar. Although everyone raved about the prime rib, I ordered the Philly Cheesteak. Big mistake, my sandwich sucked! My husband ordered the prime rib and it was delicious. Our jalapeno poppers took forever and their ranch dressing is nasty.
-
Review from Mike M.
Friends and neighbors raved about this neighborhood pub with really good food. I tried it out and was impressed. Great clam chowder and crab. The prime rib was huge but was overly seasoned, killing the taste of the meat with too much pepper. The beers were cold (always a plus) and the service was very friendly. The place was loud (the good kind of loud) and the games were on all the big screens. Nice place.

I noticed this place right after I moved to the area about a year and half ago. I kept wanting to step inside and try it, but never did. Finally, one Saturday night, it was about 8 and I still couldnt think of dinner, I convinced my wife we should order something to go from O'Connell's. I wanted the prime rib, but was told at this hour, I was only likely to get medium or medium well, which is just wrong from any beef, especially prime rib. So after further review, decided to get the NY steaks. The sides i got were the Clam Chowder and Baked potato, the wife got the Side Dinner Salad and Rice. The steaks were very good, perfectly cooked. The clam chowder was pretty good, but a tad salty, which could have been due to the condensed flavor since it was late in the day. The rice was outstanding, nice and tender and full of flavor. The baked potato, was pretty good. The portions were very generous, the side salad looked like most places dinner salad. A few days later, we ordered again, and got some sandwiches and some onion rings (damn fine onion rings, battered, which is my preferred ring method) Staff, as well as everyone inside have been very nice and friendly, I can see how you could become attached to this place. We will definitely be back.

I have been going to O'Connell's now for about 5 or 6 years, and have trully only been disappointed once--evrybody has a bad day, and no reason to dwell on it. the other hundreds of times I've been in the beer has been cold, the service attentive, and the food delicious. The atmosphere is such that you feel like your at home--a real neighborhood bar. The right sports are always on the array of HD flat screen encircling the bar. I am particularly impressed by bar manager Bill, and security man Jim.

ugh this place is so hard to review. really want to love it -- so many tvs to watch for over-stimulation, the food is good, and love their Sunday brunch deals. the problem is that EVERY single time we sit at a table, the service is BY FAR the worst in Huntington Beach. take forever to get served, and don't even try to get a substitution or request a particular bread, etc etc. the servers will write down your requests, sure, but you'll never get it. this last Sunday the server finally threw down our plates after a kid you not 50 min wait because there was a "tortilla" issue as the server explained. God she was so mean to us, i really don't remember shooting her puppy in the head. anyway, go there, but sit at the bar.
