NYC Icy rocks. We go as often as possible. The flavors, from pedestrian (cherry) to exotic (mango basil?), are all wonderful, and they even make a mean shake for $5 which, while not exactly a steal, seems to be the going rate these days. Nice folks, too. Well, folk. The same girl is there every time we go, but she's awfully nice.
The only problem is that the location is less than stellar. But you can't have everything. They'd have to charge more of they got a place near Mimi's/The Farm/Sycamore. Deal with it!
If you've ever spent time in Philly (or the dreaded South Jersey for that matter) then you have heard of "water ice." This strangely named concoction is related the Italian Ices family with only a few slight differences. Even Rita's Italian Ice doesn't do well in those regions because the Philly area isn't big on change or open-mindedness where those things are concerned. They figure "keep your heroes, we have our hoagies" and "our water ice beats your Italian Ices" and to heck with anyone who doesn't like it. I'm not a big fan of that way of thinking but this is one area where I agree with them.
NYC Icy does not by any means try to make "water ice" but it's close in consistency if not taste. You simply cannot beat "water ice" no matter how stupidly it's named. And it's named STUPIDLY. Sorry Philly. Sorry Rocky. Sorry Amos Lee. You guys have a stupidly named delicious cold thing. Deal with it.
Come on. It's either water or it's ice. Can't be both. Stupid.
NYC Icy makes something that's alright on the tongue. No big deal. It's tons better than what that dude sells from his cart on the corner, but it doesn't beat Philly. It's in some weird limbo of take-it-or-leave-it and doesn't try to be anything other than what it is - not bad, not great.
I had the green apple cold sorbet type thing and I thought it tasted good enough. My girl had a caramel thing that she didn't like mixed with a nutmeg/cinnamon thing that she loved. It was soft, cold and smooth. Just not great.
The inside of the place didn't make me feel like I was in the cleanest store in the world either. I didn't see any traces of grime or dirt-saturated horror but that mosquito that I kept trying to crush had the last laugh because I'm scratching my leg raw. It's not grungy, I just get a different feel when I'm in Yogo Monster. A clean, bright feel.
The owner was a really nice guy and he had his family in there eating Chinese food and chillin' out. It was cute, felt like a family business.
We didn't want to drive all the way out there and have them be closed, so we called first and got an answering machine telling us all about their Winter and Fall hours. Uh...it's still Summer. Are you closed or not??? We went anyway and got lucky. Can't count on luck all the time.
Nice enough place but we're not going back. Oh and for all the people who complain that they don't provide spoons, here's a tip: ask to taste a flavor FIRST. They will give you your taste on a spoon. Keep the spoon and when you get your order....use the spoon. Life isn't promising you rose gardens - learn how to survive in this crazy world.
Okay bye.
Delicious! Not too sweet, but completely flavorful. It was hot as basket/base/and volley [BALLS] outside. I had sweltered in the Park for 3 hours, and on my way home, I decided to hit up NYC Icy. Best decision I made all day. The guy working there had a face I knew I could exchange icy goods for money with. He gave me the rundown of what I might like in comparison to the food mood I was in. He let me know that the mango basil was a big hit-- so I might want to try that, and for a light, yet chunky delight-- he suggested the pineapple. I had them both mixed in the large cup (which is not the largest cup I could think of to call large--but it was a good enough amount).
the prices for an icy or milkshake ranged from $2-$5. I'm not sure why the rating up top says $$? The milkshake of the day was "Rice Pudding" I was tempted-- but alas hot day + mixing pineapples mangoes rice pudding and milk sounds like me having to cross the street and ask the people at the Banya to use the Bano.
I'm lucky to live a block away, I'm in love with the Thai iced tea gelato!
I'm not much of an ice cream/sorbet/icy fan. But NYC Icy has got me sold. To fool myself into thinking they haven't sold me though, i do not go often. But when I do, I get 5 pints. They mix real thai iced tea into the thai iced tea icy. And ginger, and mint and apricot and creme brule? Is that even possible? Who cares? It's delicious. Actually just finished more mango basil than I care to admit.
Everyone I know thinks that my living in Flatbush must be a real drag. I'll keep letting them think that because I know that I have some of the most amazing foood right at my doorstep. NYC Icy is EVERYTHING I could ask for in a ice cream shop. First of all it isn't even ice cream. Yes, they have "creamy" flavors but they are'nt heavy like ice cream. They have like a gadzillion flavors, so I'll never get bored. And for chrissakes, it's in Flatbush! I heart this place.
I love this place! I come here in the summer when I'm walking with my grandma to the doctor (the HIP center is right across the street).
As I wait for her I get a delicious mango basil icy to pass the time as I sit outside on a bench enjoying the weather. This place is a staple of my summers!
A neighborhood treat. I stopped in the other day after a year away. It has only gotten better! First off the staff is helpful and crazy friendly. Secondly and more importently, the sorbets an iceys are delicious. I tried the lavender, the apple pie, and the lemon mango. But in the end had to go with an old friend, rice pudding. The natural homemeade flavor comes in a perfect one size cup. A word to newcomers: they don't have spoons. It's sorta an unedible cone.
If you're in the neighborhood on a hot day, stop in. It's amazing and amazingly unique.
I have had the mango basil and it is wonderful, but on my last swing by I had the grapefruit ice, small cup $2, it was not too sweet and very refreshing on my stroll down Stratford Road.
NYC ICY is a real treat in an area that is improving over the years, I moved to Kensington in 1999. Being right on the edge of Ditmas Park / Prospect Park South is perfect for a walk with a frosty scoop of heaven.
There are other new takeout joints close by worth a try.
best icy in brooklyn
Oh Mango Basil! The answer to all my summer prayers. Not too sweet; luscious, sophisticated and herbaceous. Perfect accompaniment for strolling down Argyle road whilst looking at fireflies...
NYC Icy makes many great flavors. All seem to use very fresh ingredients. The chocolate with spices is particularly good. The perfect snack to pick up and eat as you walk to Prospect Park.
My initial draw to NYC Icy was hearing about the inventive flavors. But what I really liked was what wasn't there. They serve a high quality product made from good ingredients - but they don't feel any need to beat you over the head with their attendant philosophy. I found our about their use of fresh, natural ingredients from reading local press reviews rather than having it plastered on every wall by the business itself.
Now I make a weekly trek through the woods (Prospect Park) with a cooler strapped to my bike rack to pick up pints.
Yipee! I found another place on one of my neighborhood discovery sessions. Apparently this place has history in NYC. I don't know. I've only live here for a year, and only about 4 months in flatbush. the story goes like this. It was a hot day. I was looking for yummy taco down church ave. but didn't know where the heck it was so I hopped off the bus between Coney Island Ave. and Ocean Pkwy. I decided to inspect this ice cream shop looking place on my walk back to Ocean Ave. There's a little chalkboard sign outside with all this interesting flavors on it. Basil this. Mint that. Ginger something else. The flavors sparked my interest so I step in. I had my eye on trying a few flavors. Apparently this stuff is like a sorbet or italian ice. Some are creamy type flavors though. I chose to mix things up and try honey almond and apricot ginger. I must tell you I nearly skipped home. The flavors were different and refreshing. Most importantly they made it not so hot outside. The combination I had probably wasnt great together, but on their own they were great. The store is new. Its a bright, clean, and inviting place, and they even sell some of their signature merchandise. I'll be making more trips to this little place.
