I'm giving NY Dental Spa a neutral rating for now... I ended up waiting over an hour the night of my appointment, and the cleaning was a tad abrasive.
Nevertheless, I'm waiting upon my insurance company to report back to me on how much I am actually going to have to pay out of pocket. In that respect, I definitely feel misled. Steer clear of the $1 advertisement if all you're looking for is just a whitening. You will get the whitening for $1, but you'll also have to pay (and hopefully not fully out of pocket) for a general cleaning which is mandatory.
I will provide an update and a re-rating of NY Dental Spa once I get the whitening kit and hear from my insurance provider. Otherwise, one positive thing is that everyone is very kind at the office.
Its such a scam. The email I recived was for laser whitening, but all they gave me was a tray with whitening gel to use at home which worked about as good as some Crest white strips.
Not to mention:
Horrible dentists that don't know what they're doing.
Really old equipment.
I waited almost an hour past my scheduled appointment time.
etc.
I hate going to the dentist but this is a completely different experience. Everyone in the office is so nice and the dentists were very informative and explained all procedures in full detail. I already made a second appointment to return and would recommend to anyone interested in a good dentist in Manhattan! FIVE STARS!!! :)
This was definitely the worst dental office I've ever been to after using four of five different dentists over the years. That said, I suppose they did all right with the cleaning. The office is casual, but not really comfortable, but it wasn't terrible. They weren't very clear with what they were doing. I've just been to better and you'd probably have a fair chance at finding better by randomly picking an office out of the phone book.
The one dollar whitening thing is kinda bs, like James N. says. They never even called me back to pick up the whitening trays they made. Also, they tacked on a lot more money when they found two cavities (which would obviously be my fault, but then the one cavity I've had in 26 years was back when I was 13, so I'm questioning their diagnosis too). In fact, my alleged cavities didn't hurt before going here but I did have some pain in the following weeks (though that has ceased).
The worst part is that in the months since I went, I've received about 20 phone calls (my cell and work phone), a dozen text messages and a few emails all asking me to come back. I already wasn't going to, but after all that I've also been inspired to write a one star review here. I would have been on the fence about two/three stars, but the harassment has dropped it to a DO NOT GO HERE. Or at least make sure you have unlimited texts on your cell plan for when they start spamming your phone. I've told them to stop calling twice, but it hasn't stopped yet.
I truly believe that people who are born sadists choose one of two professional paths: personal trainer or dentist. It was with this prejudice in mind that I met Dr. Ian Mapes at NY Dental Spa a little over a week ago...so when I tell you Dr. Mapes is great, you should believe me.
As an almost-25 year old who spent the first 22 years of life seeing a pediatric dentist (shut up, Highlights is awesome), my experience with dentists is admittedly minimal -- but I've never been to one who did all the heavy lifting him/herself. In other words, every time I've been to the dentist, it has always been the hygienist who does pretty much the entire process of a dental cleaning and then the dentist comes in, pokes around for a few minutes, says something about "number 18", and leaves.
But Dr. Mapes did the whole thing himself. I really like that. It's hard for me to be comfortable with someone rooting around in my mouth while I drool all over myself and hope he doesn't comment on the obvious fact that I neglected my retainers for the past 10 years. But once you get over the fact that he looks young enough to be some kind of Doogie of the dental world, it was really easy to be comfortable with Dr. Mapes. He's extremely nice and professional and seemed to be genuinely concerned that I understood everything that was going on and he made sure all my questions were answered before I left. I didn't feel hurried which has always been my number one issue with doctors.
I believe he's at the NY Dental Spa on Tuesdays only, but he keeps fairly extended hours which is super convenient for people who work all day.
If you're in need of a dentist (and take my word for it, do not wait 2 years between visits), definitely give Dr. Mapes a call at NY Dental Spa.
PS. On a more unprofessional note -- and I assure you, this fact did NOT influence my review in any way -- Dr. Mapes is super dreamy.

Everyone was very professional, and, yes the $1 whitening is for real.
I was pleased with the results. I also got an appointment within 24 hours (!). This usually doesn't happen with a dentist.
I had a mixed experience here. I answered the deal for cleaning and whitening back in February.
My experience at the office was pretty good. It is a very casual pl ace so if you are expecting a clinical dental office vibe - get that out of your head.
i did not have to wait more than 5 minutes before my fitting for the whitening trays. The woman working as the assist couldn't say my name, and just kept calling me "you". She did nearly choke me with the molding mix - but after a few tries got it right.
Then I went into the next room for an assessment and cleaning. That was good and fast. I have had occasion pain in one tooth - but the dentist did not think it was a cavity. No xrays to check though.
So the bad part is that I had to wait until may, and a few phone calls questioning if this offer was a scam, to recieve my whitening trays. My top tray is good, but my bottom tray only covers half my teeth - no good for whitening - just stripes.
