It's everything it should be. Good divey café food with a Texas slant. The drinks are good, the beer is cold. Hell, even the tea is good! I've caught a few memorable shows here, but lunch is my favorite time to drop in.
5 stars from me.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alysha M.Austin, TX7179062037Jun 30, 2017
The most you can expect from an outdoor music venue I guess?
Hard for me to really review this place since I wasn't suuuuper into the Texas country scene. But I had fun tagging along :) I think it's great that they do benefit concerts- for little to no money at all!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ron B.Austin, TX461831Jun 1, 2018
I don't know why Yelp insists that Nutty Brown Cafe is closed - I saw Clint Black there a couple of weeks ago and had a good time.
Yelp - you need to remove the "CLOSED" status - because it definitely is open; there are concerts at Nutty Brown amphitheater almost every week.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brian S.Telephone, TX13835Apr 14, 2019
Went to see Aaron Lewis last night. Stood in line, tickets said 6-11, didn't get in till 6:30, then when we asked for food, we were told they have chick filet, well $20.00 for two chicken sandwiches and two cokes... but when your hungry that's your only choice.
Afterwards the temps dipped into the 40s with winds howling, asked to get warmer cloths and blanket from our car.... nope. No re-entry.
You could see our car from entrance.
After hours freezing at 9:32pm Aaron went on, by this time folks were walking in with blankets and coats, wait, I thought no re-entry???
We listened to two songs and then went to our car.
We listened to him from our car with heat on.
As we went to leave, there is 1 way in and out, I can't imagine having everyone leaving through one gate.
Not a place we will come back to see a show.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 18, 2012
I had been wanting to try this place for some time. As my daughter's volleyball tournament was right down the street, we finally got the opportunity.
We got to Nutty Brown during an off hour (4:00P.M.), so that may have had an impact on results. With 4 in the group, we had orders for 2 chicken fried steaks, 1 chicken strip, & 1 Kevin Fowler frito pie. It turned out that the frito pie was the big hit. The other meals seemed to be lacking something.
Service was outstanding. Also 1 of our group forgot their iphone when we left. The staff gave it to the manager, so we were able to pick it up when we returned. We want to give the manager a great big THANK YOU.
We will return to give this place another chance to move their rating from 3 to 4 or 5.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 3, 2012
Atmosphere and Cleanliness : Well it's the Nutty Brown...what else is there to say...Its an Icon..
Service: WoW...the hostess needs a happy pill or something, seamed cheery with the other employees...As for our other waitress SERVER 291...She did great...Acknowledged us while headed to another table...This is a PLUS..
Food: Apps were Queso, Chips and Salsa...Frown on the charge for chips and Salsa but with as large of a venue they have??. .Either way it was good...Fresh Chips, Salsa and the Queso was packed with flavor...stayed creamy till the end...And this is HUGE with us...We both had the Chicken Fried Steak...NICE...Top Quality Black Angus...You can taste the quality...great peppery bite...Wife had the Ceasar Salad...Been awhile...Crisp and Tasty...and Queso Home Fries...Hot and loaded with cheese...For me, Jalapeno Hush Puppies....Little Dark, but DELISH, better with gravy...AND the wife is now a fan of hush puppies....and the Jalapeno Cream Corn...SAD for me, it was canned corn...great flavor...
Worth the Adventure: We were glad to add this to the list...The music venue looks awesome...And away WE go....Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ed S.Pflugerville, TX010May 7, 2019
Nutty Brown is what it is, SRO, did not expect much from the venue.
But paid $140.00 for 2 tickets for a 70 minute show. Really!!!!
I will never see him live again. the saving was the CD of the "state I am In" I was sent because I bought tickets. I give his CD 3.5 Stars.
Question Why does everyone talk when the act is on? Not just Aaron, All the live acts I have seen in the last year. Maybe I am just getting old.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Casey M.Austin, TX25726457May 26, 2017
Austin staple that you MUST visit. Been here twice - once on 4th of July for Bob Schneider and the other last night to see Clint Black. Be ready to sweat given it's an outdoor venue, but well worth it to see great country music artists. It's a bring your own chair kinda place and make sure to show up early for big names. We arrived a little into the openers act last night and there was no place to set up our chairs. We made due and stood at the front which was definitely the best place to watch Clint!
Parking is $10 though they did send out an email that stated if you had 4 people in the car (which we did) it's free!
Beers start at $6 which isn't as bad as other venues. Huge downfall: they had ONE food truck there and the line wrapped around the entire place. A couple other food trucks, at least, are ESSENTIAL for big names.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dika M.Austin, TX69213254Sep 26, 2016
I really wanted to like this outdoor music venue. It reminded me of the Backyard in the 90's. I attended the Cole Swindell concert this weekend and although the artists were fantastic, the venue was oversold. It was so crowded and humid and because the tickets said the show started at 6pm, we waited in the heat standing (there were no seats for general admission) for 4 hours until Cole came on stage. By that time, there were a lot of drunks pushing and shoving to get near the stage. I made the mistake of trying to get to the restroom (opposite direction of the stage) and was pushed and shoved repeatedly and getting back to my group was much worse! The venue is not sloped like Austin360, so if you're short and towards the back you can't see at all. I won't even mention how terrible the parking situation was.

I sure do not know why I never think to go here more... they have a spectacular outdoor patio and great venue for live music. They manage to attract some pretty great local talent. The outdoor venue is a cross between Stubbs and Salt Lick with better seating.
The food is just ok, but then again, I am not a fan of comfort food. If you are, they make a Chicken Fried Steak that will make you do a double take as it seems larger than the plate it is served upon. I had to take 2/3 of it home last time I ordered it.
The wine selection is limited, but I can find a decent wine or two on their list. I do not go here for their culinary and sommelier offerings, I go here to listen to music and music I shall have.
I saw the Eggmen here last week and loved the eclectic mix of folks in the crowd. You won't find any hipsters here, it is too far from East Austin for their mopeds and bicycles and they really do not cater to that crowd's music style.
They also have a pretty extensive Sunday Brunch buffet complete with many Southern offerings only Paula Deen could top.
It's a great hipster-free zone. Check them out!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Dec 2, 2010Updated review
Time for Rooster's biannual review of Nutty Brown. Went here today for some show and tell. Dad has a few degrees which none are affiliated with any college. He kills almost everything that walks. The only thing his truck can't pass is a gas station. Lunch felt like pawn stars Hays County.
The old man knows arrowheads. Dug since he was well a little toot.. Today even at his age he still can distinguish multiple points without issue. There was so much distinguishing that the waitress had issues with us ordering.
I finally intervened with some chips and salsa. Colleagues denoted the hint of chili powder. Little Rooster colored on the connect the dots hoping to make the stage out back. The kids menu even quoted adult prices for the same fare. Is this the happy hour menu at your live music events? I'll have the dino nuggets and a dos XX.
I opted for the baja style shrimp tacos. Can't really say anything bad about the entree except the refrigerator cold beans. All components worked except the beans. That is until you factor in the waitress dumping the kiddo's grilled cheese into the booth behind us. It took fifteen minutes for his new meal to arrive. The rest of the bunch had to be asked to move the collection aside to receive the food.
I didn't hear any complaints from the other diners. Frankly they were discussing ancient business. Meanwhile I went the waiter station to grab a tea pitcher; waitress has a few more tables than she could handle. Little Rooster ate well from my plate including the cold beans, chips, and some fries from a friends plate.
This place hasn't changed much. I haven't had a meal here in years that I didn't regret spending the $$ elsewhere thinking of the better places I could have went. Austin has spoiled me. I finally admit it. Se ya in two years Nutty Brown.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Dec 29, 2008Previous reviewWhen Nutty Brown Café opened roughly 10 years ago, it was a godsend. Unfortunately, the blessing turned into a nightmare at least from a culinary perspective. I've honestly avoided "the nut" for several years as the food had suffered thru ownership changes and an identity crisis. As most Yelpers wrote, the live music venue is a gem.
Yesterday, Jenny and I were looking for a quick bite before I had to go to work. We opted to give it another go around at NBC. We skipped the brunch offering and ordered off the regular menu. Jenny's NB salad was good in her opinion as was my fried shrimp filled tacos with cabbage and cilantro. The Spanish rice had the texture and taste of being made the day before. The beans were fresh out of the can. My broccoli cheese soup was seasoned well; but a tad greasy from the cheese.
I wasn't put off by the food except for the price. Neither plate was worth the $10 price tag. We also ordered a side of tater tots for little Rooster. That's $2.45 for a handful of tots. I asked Jenny this morning what she would do with a $10 budget and she rattled off:
Pancakes and the black bean entree at Magnolia
Veggie plate at Austin Java with a cup of Spicy African Peanut Soup
Two Economical breakfasts at The Omelettry
I had delusions of all you can eat kolaches as Lone Star for $6. I could also get some serious Torchy's love happening for under $10. I could also go over to Logan's Roadhouse and have an 8oz Top Sirloin with all the fixins and those buttery rolls. I'm really starting to forget whether I really like NBC or not.
I'm really torn at this point. The entrees were in between MEH and A-OK. Service was great; but those damn prices! I'll guess I'll round up this time due to the music venue and give 3 stars
