OK, there are more authentic places, there are cheaper places, there are more pleasant places when this place is packed... but there are not many other places where you can get some really good lobster tacos or lobster quesadillas in town. Today, I had the tacos sagrado as well (mashed potatos, crisp cabbage, green salsa), and they were rockin.
I'm tempted to go four stars, but I'll keep it at three based on a "not as good" meal last time I was there. Go early before the crowd gets there, and you won't have to worry about navigating the chaos.

This is the best Mexican food I have ever had. My friend Thomas introduced me this this gem, northwest of Georgia Tech, in an industrial area of Atlanta. I was skeptical at first, but I have been back numerous times since. Go during the off hours, or plan on waiting for a seat; this is a small restaurant, but it is worth it.
I have not had a dish I didn't like, but try the Holy Tacos -- and when you bite one, you'll know exactly how they got their name.
If you are driving through Atlanta on I-75 and need a good meal, Nuevo Laredo is right off the interstate. Give it a shot. I guarantee you'll not regret it.

3.5 Stars
The girls (Allison, Erin, Rachel and inductee Lindsay) at work and I had our Cashmere Mafia lunch today at Nuevo Laredo. Since we all work from home a lot more with the recent changes, we all have different schedules and hardly see one another at the office. We made a pact to at least meet for lunch once a week to catch up on the drama and gossip in our lives! Seriously we would make a great TV show and Mario Lopez...if you are reading...I would like you to play me! :)
I mean who would not want to watch a recently married blond getting use to married life, the girl next door brunette with a baby girl who moved here from Austin and living in the country with her husband, a single and sassy Asian girl that is re-starting a new chapter in her life with a new job and just realizing that after so many times taking her boyfriend back that he is not the one, a girl looking for true love and happiness after 2 marriages, and their token cute brown gay guy, as you all may already know, always makes life a bit interesting and fun. Sounds like an Emmy or Oscar show to me!
Anyway, back to the review! This is the first time I have been to Nuevo Laredo for lunch. The service was quick...almost too quick. I think we sat down for at least 2 min before they were asking for our order. The prices are a bit more expensive than other Mexican places. A speedy gonzales would be like $5.45, but her its $7.95. The food came out quickly and it was tasty, but not extraordinary like every other review on here. I thought everything tasted overly onion like...which is fine for me, but if I brought my partner David here, I would have to quickly take him to Piedmont Hospital! The portions are huge, which is good since the cost is a bit more.
Overall a good experience. It was fun watching people around us celebrate their birthday with co-workers. Allison brought her baby Kaitlyn and she had a great time as well! We had a great time catching up on our lives and of course saving some drama for the next time we meet next week! Stay tuned...

There's no reason to write a long review. Here's the good stuff:
Food: mediocre at best
Margaritas: prob best in Atlanta (TX margaritas are still much better)
Service: really friendly

I have a secret: I hate Mexican food!
Unless.... It's as good as Nuevo Laredo!
Office buddies and boss took me out to lunch for my birthday. In what looked like a taco cabana just 1 mile south of the Mexican border, Nuevo Laredo sits on the Westside just across the street from the Pepsi plant.
Lobster taco's, and a combo #3 later! I enjoyed the most authentic Mexican food I'd ever had!
I recommend going in early for lunch as it will fill up fast.

This is the best Mexican spot in Atlanta. Always busy, yet somehow they seem to get you seated quickly enough that you barely notice (or soon forget) the wait. While Atlanta isn't known for it's authentic Mexican cuisine, this is a spot where you can find it. The combo selections are plentiful and the taco picks will suit whatever meat you're in the mood for, from carne asada to lobster, and the margaritas are divine. They do takeout at all times and their salsas are super tasty. A bit hidden over on Chattahoochee, it's worth the drive and parking in the gravel lot!

When I first moved to Atlanta, I was so hoping the ATL would have some Mexican food restaurants. Everyone told me this was THE place to go. The wait was hours long and it was packed, so I was really excited to eat. The margaritas and service was fabulous, so this has got to be the right place, right? Well, I was a little disappointed in the food. It was either a little bland, or way too spicy. NO flavorful middle. It is, however, the best Mexican I've eaten so far in Atlanta. If you want a tiny step below, and cheaper, go to Pancho's.

Simply the best Mexican fare in the ATL-bar none, period.
Everything on the menu rocks. The only caveat is you must get here early to avoid a very long wait.
If you have never been (and yet you consider yourself a Mexican food aficionado) then get your lame ass over there pronto.

Dear Lord, Please send me a Mexican Restaurant close to work with Lobster Tacos a la carte, quick attentive service and cheese dip you want to smother your food in.
Sincerely,
Kelly
p.s. a strong margarita would be nice too.
The Lord has answered my prayers and it is called Nuevo Laredo Cantina. An institution in Mexican food, no wonder it has been named the best Mexican Food in Atlanta. A little tricky to find at first, but once you locate it, there is no forgetting the way back.
Get there and put your name on the waiting list. It can be awhile, but they are more than happy to serve you and your friends a pitcher of maragaritas while you wait in the parking lot. It's worth the wait!!!

This place wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as I think it is hyped up to be. I mean, I think there are several other places in town with the same quality of food.
I went for lunch with a few co-workers. We showed up before the noon rush because they knew it would be a long wait if we didn't go till 12:00. The service was fine; I had plenty of water when I needed it and we didn't have to wait for much of anything. The food was out quite fast also.
I had the barbacoa type meat, which I hadn't really seen at any similar restaurants. It was pretty good, and it came with tortillas of course. The rice and beans were fine but nothing out of the ordinary.
All in all, I will visit again for lunch but I won't crave this place any more or less then other Mexican food in the area. I almost went with three stars because of the over-hyped factor, but I don't want to hold that against them. I will give it four starts because there is nothing wrong with the place, but I won't give it five because it wasn't anything exciting.

This place does not live up the hype. I grew up in South Texas so I know mexican food and while the food is pretty good, it's not the best mexican food ever like people proclaim. I guess for Atlanta it's better than average, but that's not saying much.
Everything I've had has been pretty good (tacos, enchiladas etc), but it's not good enough to wait around for 90 minutes or deal with the parking.

I am REALLY glad I checked out some of the other reviews before I wrote mine!!! I didn't want to get unnecessarily crucified for dissing one of "Atlanta's best Mexican" places!
Alright, let's get to it. First of all, the parking situation is atrocious. There are so many issues with parking, that if it were up to me, I would have just said "let's go somewhere else". Since I was with a group, we braved the situation and somehow lucked out, and managed to park up the road at one of the only places where "no parking!!!!!" wasn't plastered all over everything. Thank goodness for that!
Now, once the parking stress subsided, we were greeted with a 90 minute wait. Understand me, when I say that I hate to wait at a restaurant. I used to wait tables, and I never understood what it was about the places I worked that prompted people to wait, but they always did. I am more of a "let's just go somewhere that is just as good that doesn't have a wait" person; but again, I was with a group, and so wait we did. The wait was made better by the fact that we had margaritas, but I am glad they weren't on my tab; $32 for a pitcher is kinda steep. Also, waiting inside is NOT an option; it is incredibly crowded.
After our 90 minute laugh session outside (we got a little drunky on two pitchers of margaritas, which are definitely good), we finally got inside, and were escorted to our incredibly cramped table. It was kind of weird being so close to people, because they literally listened to our entire conversation. No matter, I guess, at least they got some laughs.
After we ordered, the food came out FAST (which was nice), and I was expecting to have the "BEST MEXICAN EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", but instead, it was just good Mexican. Nothing special. I had the enchiladas, and I tried my friend's nachos, and while they were both good, they were NOT worth a 90 minute wait. Especially since I know of at least 5 places on Buford Highway that have the same thing for less money. Alas, it didn't really matter to me, since I was with a group, but if it were up to me, I would have just gone somewhere else.
If you want to brave the precarious parking situation, and you can bring yourself to wait 90 minutes for okay Mexican, then I say Nuevo Laredo is for you! In my opinion, it isn't the best Mexican in Atlanta; it is just another good Mexican place with issues related to how small the restaurant is, and where it is located. Good, yes, but worth the wait? Not necessarily.

Nuevo Laredo is the place for me. Not only because the people that work there know me but because they make the food right! This is no quickie "Mexican" joint however, the food comes in a timely manner piping hot but not nuked to obliteration. I recommend the carne asade in any wrapped form, the mole, tamales, and lobster tacos. My wife loves the all the time special Cadillac Chicken and the chips and salsa are QUALITY.
If spirits are your thing, go with the house margarita. NO need to up sell yourself to Cadillac or top shelf, the house does the trick. No next day heartburn either.
Since I have friends on the inside the wait is never a problem for me but I would say that it has become a spot to be seen in Atlanta now and that translates to longer table waits. If being in a crowded house with folks snaking through you to make it to the bar and sharing good times is not your thang, do not go to NL. However, if you are down for a fun experience in a cozy atmosphere with good food cooked by people who know how to cook Mexican food than this is a place for you.

I like Nuevo Laredo but I have to agree that it is a much more enjoyable experience if you go when it is not crowded. On Friday and Saturday nights, you wait so long that it just loses its charm. Everything I have ever tried here has been great - burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and the mole. I don't really care if it is authentic Mexican food or not - I lived in LA where I had a healthy dose of "real" Mexican food, which I love, and I still really like Nuevo Laredo. The salsa is great - my main problem is that I eat way too many chips and salsa before my meal comes, although, I still usually manage to clean my plate. The margaritas are good (the best part of waiting on a Friday or Saturday night in the summer) and I like their sangria, too.

I love the salsa and the guacamole. The food is good. I eat it a couple of times a month and enjoy it. I really need to try the mole sauce since everyone I know raves about it. Maybe I'll try it next time. Service is fast and friendly. If you get there past 11:30 for lunch you will have a long wait. The parking is rough sometimes...especially trying to dart across Chattahoochee Ave while semis are barrelling down on you at 50. But I like it, its consistent and good.

Nuevo Laredo is always packed, expect to wait. You can get a drink while you wait, I recommend a Sweetwater 420, because you'll get a better deal on local Atlanta beer than the selection of imported light lagers (No drafts, all bottles). Everyone that's raving about the food seems to have had authentic Mexican dishes, I got a chimichanga (invented in Tuscon, AZ) and it was pretty much the same as any other cheap Mexican restaurant. If you go in without your expectations overly distorted by hype, Laredo is a very good restaurant.

The charm of Nuevo Laredo is that it's a popular "dive" restaurant, complete with tough parking, cramped small tables, often a wait, and delicious food. There's a reason there's a wait and not parking spots... because Atlanta can't get enough of this place. While it may or may not be the best Mexican/Mexicali/TexMex you've ever had, it's delicious with generous portions, and I personally think it's the best "border" Mexican food I've ever had, even compared to the stuff I actually had in the border cities. With Nuevo, all the food is good, but some of it is better and more unique. They do a great job with tacos de carne asada, mole, and yes, the vegetable plate. The service is friendly, and as prompt as they can accommodate. The decor is appropriate - proudly displaying the list of all the famous people and friends of the owner. It makes you feel at home, as if you know Chance and you've been his friend forever.
The thing about Nuevo is that you have to go on a weekend night or between lunch and dinner. It's going to be popular, and the parking is going to be limited, but Nuevo is an experience, not just a meal. You go when you have a few hours to spend relaxing on the porch with a pitcher of margaritas and/or a few Tecate's, not when you're in a hurry for a Mexican fix.

Worth your time and worth your hard earned dollah is the almighty "Nuevo Laredo" and let me just say, you do not have to be a fan of Mexican to like this place. Parking is a nightmare, do not park where it says "no parking" they will tow you and you have to be tactical with regard to when you go. For example, avoid Friday at noon, or Friday at 7PM, stay away from the obvious times and days that will be packed because this place has amazing food and it is all made fresh with fresh ingredients and the salsa is the best salsa in the entire world. Yeah I said it, what...? For real, order the shrimp tacos, or the "chorizo" (sp?) oh, and the chicken soup is all "broth-ie" and full of avocado, and their quarter grilled chicken is awesome, oh, and steer clear of the refried beans and opt for the black beans. You will thank me for that little tip. Bottom line, they use only the freshest cilantro, onions, garlic, tomatoes, chicken and meats, OH, and they have the all important corn tortillas that are much healthier than the white flower tortillas that all the other Mexican restaurants bring you even when you specifically request corn.

Stand and wait in a dreary gravel lot until you are permitted to be seated in a cramped seat that makes you cramp, all for the pleasure of eating more faceless cheese, rice and beans on a plate that is somehow labeled 'Mexicai'.
The more gobs of cheese, rice and beans, the more Mexican Restaurant signs they are allowed to post.
Post away Nuevo Laredo Cantina!

Ok being West Indian with a Puerto Rican mama I grew up with rice and beans, so when I go to mexican restaurants around town I rate them on how good their rice and beans is above everything else. Nuevo Laredo has REALLY good rice and beans, I love it, I crave it, I NEED it. I used to work in the area and when my boss loosened his grip on the company credit card he would buy us all lunch from Nuevo Laredo. We actually even had them cater one of our work events a while back (*you know I took home all that leftover goodness! :-) ) This place gets packed pretty quick so I would suggest going on an off day, if you're hear for lunch expect to wait ...for awhile...but have a margarita while you wait, they are nice and frosty and yummy and how they pack a punch. Also they have standard mexican fare I really loved the lunch special I would get two tacos (one beef, one chicken, with rice and beans for like $7), the quesadillas are nice but not as good as Los Bravos, but they have a Cadillac Crabcake dat is soo good I want to slap the cooks. Try it out at least once.

A good friend took me to Nuevo Laredo for the first time. It looks like a small little hole in the wall among a stretch of discount businesses off Howell Mill but the food is great!
I like the Fajitas, personally. But haven't heard anyone complain about their food or drinks here.
Be warned, while it is kind of off the beaten path, lots of people know about this place. They have crammed every possible seat into this place to serve people and you may have to juggle around people to get to your seat. Still, don't expect to be seated right away. It's popular for a reason.

Me three Marina & Nicole...I am definitely not feeling Nuevo Laredo Cantina. All of my friends in my major used to rave about this place when we were in school, so I decided to go with one of them one day. It looked rather grimy when we went in but I decided to disregard its appearance because everybody said it was so good.
My friend ordered the Chicken Enchilada and I ordered the Beef Enchilada. There is a place back home in MI called Xochimilco's that has the BEST enchiladas, and, foolishly, I thought Nuevo Laredo would have some that were almost as good.
I was wrong.
The beef enchilada was TERRIBLE...but what made it worse was that I asked if it could be taken off the bill because I didn't like it and had only taken one bite and THEY WOULDN'T TAKE IT OFF THE BILL!!!! Ummm hello...customer service anyone? Make sure you are going to like what you order even if it is your first time there...or risk wasting your money AND still being hungry when you leave!
I'm never going back! :-(
In my humble opinion, This is the Best Authentic Mexican Food in Atlanta.
In contrast to one of my other favorites, Casa Grande, Nuevo Laredo Cantina is on the smaller side, and a little bit off the beaten path. But, I have to admit that the food is right up there on the top of my list.
When I first started working over in the Smyrna area I would pass by what looked to be a little dive cantina on my nightly commute home. I would take Chattahoochie road on my way back into the heart of Atlanta, and although, its in a sort of unexpected location....Most nights it was packed...With people standing outside waiting...I have to admit it made me wonder what the hype was all about.
Be prepared to wait at least 45 min to an hour to get a table if you come during prime time. Atlanta realizes what a gem we have here. Their food is pretty damn life changing. Yep, I said it. Life changing. This is authentic Mexican food, of higher quality than your average cantina, and though you may pay a little more for it-its worth it.
Their salsa is amazing and the margaritas are on-point. $24 a pitcher is a bit outrageous, but they are very good. If you can eat mexican food and skip the margaritas, you are stronger than myself. I say, splurge and get the margaritas.
The Fajitas Barbacoa is definitely the thing to eat here. I suggest going for lunch, or an early dinner. It's life changing...You wont be disappointed!

My FAVORITE Mexican place in Atlanta...EVER!
I don't mind the hour long waits, and I don't squeezing through a crowd to the 3 feet long front bar to order margaritas to sip on while we wait.
I prefer the simple house margarita on the rocks with salt - the best!
The food here is delicious. It gets a bit pricey if you order ala carte, so I suggest sticking to the already put together plates of your typical Mexican dishes - only these are not so typical. I don't know who the chef/cook is of this place, but mad props!
So if you can find this little prize of place off Chattanooga Street, excellent! You'll feel like your in Mexican heaven!

I am just about to move intown, and Nuevo Laredo is probably the closest place to eat. With my love for Mexican food, and all the glowing reviews this place gets, its very fortunate!
I tried the brisket barbacoa at the recommendation of one of the reviewers on this site. It was ok. The sauce tasted like heinz 57, which I enjoy on some meat, but not at all what I expected with this dish. I also couldn't figure out what was "mexican" about my "mexican mashed potatoes".
However, my wife got the chicken quesadillas, which were phenominal. The tortillas were buttery but not greasy, and the filling was generous. The salsa was excellent too.
The restaurant was definitely crowded, and we had to park across the street and risk our lives running across Chattahoochee Avenue, but we were seated right away. I could see where larger parties would have to wait a long time though.
If I had one complaint... this place is across from the Pepsi plant (in a Coke town...must be lonely) and serves Pepsi products, but doesn't serve Mountain Dew!? Come on!
Next time we'll try the margaritas, and I'll try a different dish (the menu is pretty large) and see how I like it then. I'll give Nuevo Laredo 4 stars for the time being.
UPDATE:
We went back again... those margaritas are POTENT. A small one definitely hit us hard. It was darn tasty too.

Wow - I'm surprised by all of the bad reviews! I'll address 5 of the main complaints I see here: 1.The wait: don't go on Friday night at 8:00. Go during the week. The longest I've ever waited was less time than it took me to drink one margarita. Also, the margaritas are decidedly just "OK". Get a Tecate instead. Do you really drink margaritas in Mexico? No. 2. The parking: again, go during the week. I probably could have combined those, huh? 3. The food: you really think it was that bad? I get the mole every time I go and it is really really good. Maybe it's just a matter of what you order. Try the mole plate - it's delicious. 4. The service: I have always had attentive and sweet service at Nuevo. Why would you need to split a check more than 4 ways? I've been to plenty of places that wont split checks at all. So this is hardly unique to Nuevo and the fact that they'll split checks 4 ways seems incredibly reasonable. It does make me sad to hear that they wouldn't take a disliked entree off the check - that is pretty lame. 5. The atmosphere: The fact that the place is kind of cramped and hectic is part of its charm. I guess it all boils down to this: Know where you are going. Be smart about when you go, what you order and what you expect. I truly enjoy Nuevo Laredo, but maybe that's because I'm not expecting it to be something that it's not.

When our IT manager dragged us out to Nueva Laredo's for lunch last week I was expecting the typica Mexican-American restaurant that you find anywhere. I surprised at how crowded it was, but how quickly they seated our party of six.
The food is great. I was pleasantly surprised that such delicious food came from such a small humble little place. Absolutely delicious, I highly recommend everyone make the trek down to it.
Be aware, if you have a group, that they will not split the check more than four ways. This was almost a problem for us, as we didn't all have cash. Just an FYI!

Best Mexican in Atlanta. Though most nights you'll have to wait at least 45 min to an hour to get a table if you come during prime time, it has always been worth the wait, even to me, an impatient person. They pack it out every night here and for good reason: their food is impeccable. I dream of it. I wake up some nights sweating thinking about their Brisket Barbacoas. This is authentic Mexican food, of higher quality than your average cantina, and though you may pay a little more for it (usually $12 a person before drinks), it's worth the extra.
Their salsa (which they call 'the salsa that ends your search') is a bit fresher and has more bite than other salasa. Usually I'm already full from gorging myself on this before the food even comes.
The margaritas will get you. They will get you good. It's $24 a pitcher, but will feel the money floating through your brain, making you giggle and walk incorrectly.
The Fajitas Barbacoa is definitely the thing to eat here. The first timy my friend ordered it the waitress looked him in the eye and said, "Good choice." She was right. Most items do not come with cheese, so you need to order a side of it shredded if you need, but I actually like that they don't hide the flavor of their meat under all that noise. This is just good clean, high quality Mexican food, and it has a reputation for a reason.
There is a 'soup Nazi'-esque quality to Nuevo also. They will not seat if your entire party isn't there when you are called (there's just too many people waiting, and they don't want the lingering). There are signs saying not to talk on your cell phone, and there is no smoking.
Still, come here once and you'll want to come back the next day.

Best Mexican food in Atlanta.
The owners moved to Atlanta from Mexico in the 90s and the walls are plastered with "Best of Atlanta" awards from ever since.
The food is much less greasy than most inexpensive Mexican places in Atlanta. I'm not a huge fan of spicy food so I cannot elaborate on how well they season things, but every dish I've had has been highly acceptable and I have had no cause for complaint.
The wait service is exceptional and despite long lines most nights of the week, they move people through there like it was their business. Despite the relatively short wait lines - any other restaurant with comparable capacity and lines would have people waiting for hours - there is no feeling of being rushed while you're eating.
Each time I've been here the waitstaff has been friendly and efficient. They are a team staff so people are always coming by to refill colas and water glasses, and if you need anything you may ask anyone who happens to pass you if you cannot find your server.
Despite being kinda far from the Midtown/Georgia Tech area, this restaurant is a huge hit with university students... and well worth the drive.

This is my second time eating at Nuevo Laredo and the experiences have been consistent. The good news - you will get enough food to last you a couple of days and when taking that into consideration the prices are amazing. The menu is lackluster - pretty straight forward Mexican food for the geographical area. The margaritas are okay. The food is fresh...enough...to eat.... I had the chapulas; they tasted like tortilla, chicken, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and guacamole mixed together. Pretty expected and if that is what you like, then you won't be disappointed. Personally, I prefer a bit of creativity and surprise (good surprise that is) when it comes to food. My boyfriend had the fajitas. He said they were "good," but he had to get more tortillas. My friend had the shrimp tacos, which he said were good. I found the music playing over the speakers to be loud, making it difficult to engage with my friends without YELLING. I really like the idea of this place and being that it is right around the corner from me - would love it if they updated the menu. However, they appear to be wildly popular (as evidenced by the wait), so why should they?
