Very cool place to have lunch.  We sat right down by the river in one of the more picturesque settings I can recall.

Many people at our table recommended the Chow Novo.  When a few of us ordered it, I could see why.  It looked amazing.  The thing that stood out to me as a universal sentiment across all of the meals is how fresh and vibrant all of the ingredients were.  I've never seen redder tomatoes in my life.

I decided to try the Grilled Chicken Breast on Foccacia.  OMFG was this great!  I've never tried a chicken sandwich this good.  The whole thing melted in my mouth.  I could have eaten 5 of these sandwiches.

Pricing for lunch was high, but the meal was being charged to the company we were out with, so I wasn't paying attention to that as much as usual.

Definitely recommend going here, and if you have some extra time after your meal, walk across the street to see the gum wall of fame.  Notice I said after.  It looks remarkable, but smells like a crap sandwich.  Ha Ha!  Good times!  Some people even stretched the gum out to spell out their names.  Challenge issued!

I had a lovely dinner here on the deck with two colleagues in December. It was a little chilly out but the heaters kept us warm - right alongside the creek.

I had two delicious old-fashioneds and a vegetable curry dish that was good but not remarkable. The service and wine selection are top-notch. It's a pricey restaurant but well worth it.

We visited Novo on Chistmas evening, and I couldn't imagine a more romantic setting. When we arrived we were asked whether we would like to sit outside on the patio. I thought I might be too cold, but they have plenty of heaters outside which made sitting very comfortable.
We were seated on the balconies overlooking the little creek. There was a live DJ outside playing great music that had just the right volume, and complemented the dinner. Perfect atmosphere!

I tried the salmon bisque which was pure bliss, perfectly seasoned, the right temperature (often I find soups too cold when ordered) and a treat for eye, nose and tongue.
As an entree, the duck on black rice was standing out. The meat was grilled to perfection, not dry at all, the rice was greatly cooked, and - omg - the sauce was incredible. I asked the waiter for the recipe, and he told me that is is based on another sauce that they cook for several hours, then infuse with herbs and spices to taste the way it does. I can't even describe it. It's spicy, savory and simply the best sauce I ever had!

The waiter gave me a great wine recommendation and was very attentive, helpful, fun and friendly.

Thank you, Novo restaurant, for making this the perfect evening. I'll definitely come back when I'm in the area!

This place is over priced. I've eaten here a few times, and the food has always been so so. The service is great, the outside patio is great, but for the cost, it's not worth it for me.

Food and atmosphere are great but came in about 5:30 on January 15, 2011 and the bartender was very cold and unfriendly.  As a matter of fact, not one single person working there seemed to smile or be happy.  Love the place, its great, but the service kind of ruined it for me.  Id give it 2.5, but since I cant, I gave it a 3.

My first time ever visiting San Luis Obispo was great b/c I found two delicious restaurants.  I tried Novo on our first night in the area.  My husband found it off of Yelp, we perused the menu, and made reservations for later that evening.

When we arrived, we were momentarily confused b/c it looked more like a bar/lounge.  We asked someone where to "check in" for our table, and they directed us towards the back.  The dining area is outside, so behind the storefront.  It overlooks a creek, and the area is beautiful from what I could make it.  It was pretty dark out.  I'm sure during the day it's even nicer.  It would have been great sitting outdoors if it was a touch warmer.  We had a heat lamp, but I was freezing.  They do offer blankets if you get too cold.

    We ordered:
Crab cakes - Good, but Ciopinot's was so much better.
Petite filet - it was good, nothing too amazing.  I wasn't a fan of the blue cheese.
Seared scallops - Melts in your mouth, not in your hand.  Loved it, except I grew tired of the sauce.
Green beans w/ pancetta - Honestly, the best dish we tried.  So so so so good!!

Overall, the dishes we tried ranged from good to excellent.  The other items on their menu looked more interesting, but I kept it safe on my first try.  Novo is listed as "Mediterranean/New American."  I think it's somewhat misleading.  Based on their menu, it almost seemed fusion to me, leaning more towards Asian fusion.  When I asked the waitress what she would classify it under, she said "international cuisine with an emphasis on small plates."   Anyways, try it, more than once!  I'd like to go back to check out more stuff on their menu.

This was the second time here and it's a great place.  One of the first things that's really nice about the place is they are dog friendly.  You can bring your dog through the restaurant (a short walk) so they can join you out back on their patio.  The waiter even brought us a bowl of water for our dogs.

The patio is really nice to with a gas heater for each table which makes it comfortable even on cool evenings.  It has a nice view of the small creek behind the restaurant.

The drinks here are pretty good and they have a very good selection.  Our server also was able to tell you about any of them and help you decide from their pretty varied selection.  I ordered a Margarita that had some muddled Serrano Chilies in it and it was very good.  Much better than spicy drinks I've had in other places that don't have much flavor.

They have some really good selections on the menu and it was a little hard to pick one, but our server was very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had.  I had the Malaysian Curry and it was also very good.

This is a really nice place to go with your significant other.  And being dog friendly is another nice plus.  The service is good and I think the food is reasonably priced too.  We'll gladly come back the next time we're in town!

My boyfriend and I randomly found Novo three years ago on a spontaneous road trip for my birthday...I loved the experience so much I've made it a personal mission to go back whenever I'm in SLO again. My personal favorite is their lavender lamb chops.
I recently had the chance to visit SLO again, and this time I brought my 7 months old puppy with me...our server provided us with a water bowl and food bowl for my little one! Coming from LA, where restaurants are not particularly dog friendly, I was shocked by their pet friendliness and we were able to have a nice dinner out with all our family members for a change!

I came here for a committee banquet a couple of years ago and all I have to say is: THIS PLACE HAS THE BEST CREME BRULEE EVER. Seriously. It was delicious. You have to try it. I haven't been able to find creme brulee as good as this place since.

I also got this vegetarian ravioli entree. It was decent, I didn't really like it that much, but that's probably because I'm not a vegetarian and.. I think read the menu wrong. Haha oops.

I love spending time here. This is probably the most well rounded restaurant in San Luis Obispo, as far as being well balanced between excellence and accessibility.

The ambience of the lounge inside and creekside dining patio outside are super comfortable. It's equally well suited for either an afternoon lounge session with a friend or a huge dinner party that might involve several bottles of wine. This place excels at marrying quality of service and ingredients with flexibility for just about any occasion.

The menu itself is also surprisingly well balanced. The offerings aren't necessarily progressive or cutting edge, but strangely, that doesn't seem to matter when you're here. It falls into the dangerously trite "tapas" and "fusion" categories, but manages to escape the soulless trendy mire that so many other places get trapped in.

You can be confident that between the tapas and entrees, decent wine and scotch lists, excellent service and comfortable atmosphere, you'll leave having had a quality experience without it being too ambitious or prohibitively expensive.

Very tasty food with a fun outdoor patio with powerful heat lamps! You feel like you're eating in a giant treehouse.

Every bite of the salmon burger on ciabatta was a delight, and the Mirror Pond Pale Ale I had was very good - both smooth and bitter (sigh, i wish i knew more drink vocabulary).

I was very impressed with the drink menu and it actually looks more reasonably priced than the food. Not so sure about buying noodles at a fusion place but it was a great lunch on the way home on 101. Great location too. [3.5 stars]

Novo is a great restaurant for so many different occasions.  I've been here for birthdays, casual dinners, "I'm treating myself tonight" nights, and late night-spur of the moment- "I want some dessert and wine" trips.

They have a great outdoor patio that flanks the creek, a trendy looking bar inside, and a more private dinning space downstairs.  With the idyllic San Luis weather and outdoor heaters, I usually opt for the patio.

    My favorites:

Salmon bisque soup - I dream about this soup.  Chunks of salmon, mushrooms, onions swim a deliciously creamy, tomato broth with dill.  The "poco" portion is enough - despite it's outrageous deliciousness - because it is pretty rich.

Sopes - I haven't had authentic sopes, regardless, these are pretty tasty.

Green beans and panchetta - don't underestimate veggie side dishes.  They are flavorful and add substance to your tapas meal without a large impact on the bill.

the bread - the bread is crispy on the outside, super moist on the inside, and baked fresh each night.  It also makes for a great dunking instrument for the soup.

The wine list -  They have a well rounded selection, including many local wines.

This place is fantastic!  We were vacationing in San Luis Obispo with our 8 month old son and fortunately stumbled upon this place.  We almost did not go in because from the outside street level, it looks like a fancier place so we were hesitant to bring the baby in.  But I am so glad we went in because the back patio is wonderful!  It is really gorgeous and the perfect place to enjoy drinks and food with baby in tow.  The wine and beer lists are impressive, the service is friendly and warm, and the food is really, really yummy.  We enjoyed it so much that we returned the next day -- something we never do when vacationing!  I highly recommend this place.

This was the best eating/dining experience I've ever had....maybe it had to deal with I was with an awesome person ;) but still.  She made reservations for I believe a Friday night, from the outside it just looks like a regular type restaurant.  Once I got inside, I totally was engrossed by the lighting, the decor, and the overall romantic / intimate vibe.  We had dinner at the The Grappolo Patio was surrounded by beautiful potted plants and native vegetation. Since we were having dinner outside, there were flickering candlelit tables, lights strung up all over the patio, right next to a creek, BEAUTIFUL.  Although it was cold, you wouldn't feel it at all with the warmth from the heaters outside.

I felt like i was in a movie or something, when the waiter took our order, giving us the specials, Got the novo lettuce wraps as an appetizer.  We opted for the sirloin for the lettuce wraps, and they were good....it came with 3 dipping sauces and two out of the three were good LoL.I had some special of the night, some fish, I forgot what it was called.....but the way the waiter described it, I decided to give it a try...also sampled some of my date's scallops were simply to die for (AND I'M NOT EVEN A SEAFOOD FAN!!!)  Decided to complete the meal with dessert which was a creme brulee, which was also amazing!!!

I'm sorry I'm not that specific with what I had, I forgot to write a review for this place as I was pretty busy, and it's been a month since I've been there.  I was just engrossed by the eating experience/atmosphere/company to remember every detail.  You definitely get what you pay for......Although it was expensive,  It's something everyone should experience.

Sat on outside patio which was right by the creek, the inside was deserted as all the diners were outside.

    1. Salmon Bisque $11
it was excellent which plently of real salmon chunks

    2. Lamb Kefta on flatbread $16
Lamb was actually formed into 2 burger shaped patties, and they put so much filling in you could not fold the flatbread until you ate half the fillings

I got a irritated stomach after eating here, I think it was caused by the flatbread ingredients

Just a quick stop for brunch on a Sunday morning.  The restaurant interior was empty but unsurprisingly, the large patio section overlooking the creek was buzzing.  Had a passable blood orange Bellini to go with an equally passable and forgettable shrimp, goat cheese, avocado omelette.  Sounded better than it was.  To elaborate, the egg was too well-done, lacking good texture, and no avocado slices, just what looked like a sauce.  The shrimp were small but otherwise cooked well, the cheese was ok.  The combination of flavors didn't wow in any way.  The accompanying potatoes were likewise not memorable.  A bit disappointing that a good-looking place like this, with decent reviews, couldn't execute basic breakfast foods well.

The ambience of the restaurant (while passing through) is modern, trendy, and nice.  The patio is casual, with table, chairs, and umbrellas in bright primary colors, but its good atmosphere is mightily helped by its gorgeous creekside location. The staff did their best to help, with some being more obviously new than others.  I was asked to move to a new table mid-meal to accommodate a large group and they comped the drink, which was more than I expected.  Seems a nice place in town, although I expect more in food quality.  Good omelettes really shouldn't be a challenge for a good restaurant.

really not impressed by service or food. two stars for the wine.

attempts at reservations, sent to voicemail, to a full voicemail box. using http://opentable.com was much more successful.

once we arrived, the host greeted us, and a young lady led us to our table on the patio. we had to walk past part of the kitchen on the way there, complete with non slip rubber mats lining the way. not the best ambiance despite the cute romantic patio we were led to.

the hostess never said a word to us, walked us to the table, did not give eye contact, did not say your server will be with you shortly, enjoy your dinner, etc.

so we sat down, and waited for our orders to be taken. the menu itself seems to be confused. it was as though, the chef could not decide what cuisine he/she was most trained in and decided to do it all. i am always relunctant of large menus with no direction.

we asked to order 2 appetizers, the empanadas with roasted peppers and cheese and the chevre, a warm goat cheese with toasted ciabatta bread.

both were disappointing, and lacking in any real depth of flavor. the goat cheese had so much oregano, you barely tasted anything else. the empanada was simply not good. for $30 just on starters, you would expect a little more.

we attempted to order scallops as one of our main courses, however we were at that point notified that the scallops and the chow novo were not being served that night due to the cal poly graduation. due to the fact that they take too long to cook.

    ...

REALLY. you couldn't have lied, and said you ran out of scallops for the evening? because that would have been a much better reasoning than our kitchen is not competent enough to create two entrees on our menu because our restaurant is fully occupied.

we ordered the lamb shank as well as the lamb chops as our two entrees. the lamb chops came out cold, with the root vegetables burned. the lamb shank came out swimming in sauce, and the polenta was undercooked.

    2 stars, JUST for wine.

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday last night. The food was good.

We started off ordering the Chevre appetizer. It was excellent, the goat cheese was super creamy and warm with some added herbs, the little toasted breads very crisp but not hard, and the tomato confit was good. The portion was quite large, and was plenty for the two of us. Getting the tomato into pieces to put on the little toasts was a bit of a struggle, but it wasn't a big deal, and was worth the effort.

For drinks, she ordered a mojito, and I had their cucumber mint martini. The mojito was very good, with lots of mint chunks in it. The martini was nice, although I think I am finding that I just don't care much for martinis in general. No knock on theirs, though, it was one of the better ones I have had.

For our entrees, she got the Chow Novo with tofu - essentially stir fry vegetables and noodles. I had the red Thai vegetable curry with chicken. Her noodles were quite good from what I tried. My curry was good as well, had a nice level of spiciness to it, although it wasn't as good as curries I have had at many dedicated Thai places.

The prices here are a bit higher than I'd like, but not dramatically so. I'd recommend trying it.

We just popped in to NOVO last night to try the Restaurant Month menu and were once again impressed by what is happening at the hottest restaurant in town. I agree with the previous reviewer that NOVO is the most well rounded restaurant in San Luis Obispo. Located on the main drag in San Luis Obispo, this is a dining experience not to miss.

We stopped in for lunch and were really blown away. While they have a small lounge and a few tables in front, most of the seating is out back in a beautiful outdoor patio area next to the creek that runs through town and just across a footbridge from the historic mission.

I ordered a pepper turkey avocado sandwich which came with a choice of soup or salad (I chose tortilla soup). I also had a lemonade which was deliciously  refreshing. First they brought out some yummy-nummy bread with oil and vinegar. The tortilla soup was quite good. The sandwich was on a soft, buttery, flakey croissant that was hearty enough to withstand being a sandwich without falling apart. In addition to turkey and avocado the sandwich also had lettuce and thick slices of tomato. The tomato in this was awesome, full of flavor. We get used to store tomatoes that are nearly flavorless but this tomato must have been fresh from someone's homegrown garden because was sooooo good. The other surprise was the pepper turkey which I thought meant black pepper. But my first bite told me this was chile pepper! Just a little heat to give it a tiny bit of kick but not overpower the other flavors. This was a perfect sandwich.

The ambiance, food, and attentive & personable service makes this place a winner.

One of my favorite restaraunts for multiple reasons.  Everything I've ever gotten has been fantastic, from the calamari with sweet chili dipping sause to (my favorite) carnitas nachos (only served at lunch), wow.   The location is incredible sitting creekside and Ive had nothing but great service at Novo.  But one of my favorite things about Novo is there incredibly good selection of great beers, which is unmatched in my opinion (as far as restaurants go [although not on tap unfortunately]).  Been many places, but few impress me like Novo does.  People not giving Novo love on Yelp best go back and get it right.

You know the first part of Disneyland's "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride, where you board a  boat and float slowly through the "bayou", while crickets chirp and fireflies briefly light the night?  That magical feeling gets re-invoked when you step out on Novo's beautiful creekside deck at night.  Twinkling lights decorate the sky, frogs croak loudly in unison from the creek below... what a perfect place to let an evening envelop you.

Because there was a bit of a wait for seating on the deck, Scootch and I opted to eat indoors, in what's essentially a bar area, with some normal tables, some high tables requiring tall chairs, and bar seating.  Even in here though, with the trance-y house music playing, I found myself sinking into my seat, wrapping my head around the beats, and getting another positive vibe, though totally different from the one that deck-seating would've invoked.

We began, upon the recommendation of our waitress, with "fried calamari with 2 dipping sauces" ($11) and she did not lead us astray.  This was a big portion of expertly crisped calamari that begged us to eat more.

We continued with "lettuce wraps", opting for tofu as the protein of choice.  Again, the fermented black bean cooked tofu was delectable, encouraging us to finish it off right from the bowl once we'd demolished the lettuce and all the little extra things that go along with the wraps.  So good!

We easily could have stopped there, but had already ordered a "grilled salmon salad" ($16, for me) and a "wild salmon" tapa ($22, for Scootch) atop a fresh corn melange.  Like all the food that had come before, my salad was pure goodness, even if technically unnecessary.

Novo's menu is all over the map, with all sorts of ethnic foods represented along with classic California cuisine.  This could have been a  recipe for disaster but thankfully, it was just the opposite.

Service was alternately a little mixed up and sometimes a little overly friendly, but the take-away here is that this place, is damned good.  I'd come back here again in an instant, sit on the deck, order up a few appetizers, and let the evening wrap me in a warm embrace.

This was an awesome place to have lunch outside in SLO!

I got the burger which came on a dutch crunch bun and was juicy with flavor. It was up there with some of the designer burgers I've had in SF like Zuni Cafe or Paragon or Father's Office in LA. The creme brulee was also awesome for dessert.

Expensive but very good. Outdoor patio is probably the best in SLO too!

Came to SLO for the wknd to celebrate my birthday. Novo was highly recommended by multiple SLO locals so I decided to make a reservation (via Open Table- so easy).

Our table was located outdoors, along the riverfront, in a beautiful canopy of trees and lights. Novo had heat lamps at most tables but I'd suggest bringing a light sweater.

The food was delicious! The tapa portions are pretty large, almost entree sized. The slit pea and lentil soup was delicious, the scallops and asparagus were amazing, and the mushroom ravioli left me wanting more (in a good way).

The only downfall of the evening was when we paid our bill and the waitress overcharged us by $100. Make sure to double check everything on the receipt!

It's a beautiful location with enthusiastic staff, a well-organized kitchen, and an interesting menu.  My criticisms are intended as a heads-up suggestion to their management.  I do think most people will have a very nice meal here.

Novo has a fantastic location - beautiful and romantic.  We went there with our 2 kids after stopping off at B&N for books.  The seating is out on the rear patio overlooking the beautiful creek and it's bridges and pathways.  However, when it got dark and cold, we were envious of the lucky people who were given lamps and/or area heaters.  An 8 year old in a nice restaurant who's very quietly reading Harry Potter deserves a little respect!  Instead my kids sat in the dark and got anxious and fidgety.

I had the duck breast over chinese rice.  It was so dark that I literally could not see the food so I can't say whether it looked appetizing.  It only tasted so-so.  They used a spicy sauce that was SO spicy that we couldn't taste the duck or the rice.  The duck was chewy so it might as well have been spicy calamari.  Mysterious food in the dark that only tastes like capsaicin isn't going to win high marks with me.

Also, my 10 yr old began to complain that her cheeseburger tasted "wrong" and "bitter" and "crunchy."  Since we were eating in the dark we decided she was just being choosy.  We had them box it up.  When we got home we found that it was completely burned!  Carbonized!  I felt bad that I had given her a hard time about not eating her dinner ("why should we buy you dessert when you won't eat your dinner!" - Oh, cringe!).

My husband's salmon was good and there were many small things we enjoyed about Novo.  We'll be back some day, but not for the duck or the burgers.

Charming restaurant with a patio overlooking a creek (simply cool).

Lavender lamb chops was worth coming back to twice during vacation.

Nice wine selection, tasty desserts, and dog friendly as well.

My boyfriend and I love to come here for a bottle of wine and appetizers. Their chevre is delicious as are their chicken wings (weird but you have to try them!). They also have a very extensive wine list and a full-bar.

Try to sit outside on the patio which is right by the creek and they have heaters if its chilly at night.

    Sit outside, it's fabulous!

Calamari w/ sweet chili sauce was great!

They carry SwanSisters Tea, very cool!  "Each year we travel throughout China exploring boutique farms and remote regions, tasting amazing teas and meeting wonderful people."
