Northwood has a special place in my heart. This is where my Dad has started going in recent years to finally take up a healthy hobby. It is a great, relaxing little course and the redwoods are simply beautiful.
The restaurant on the course is very hit and miss. Fried raviolis are a big yes and the cheese and fruit plate are a resounding no.
I'm not a golfer but it really did seem to me that people were having so much fun at this place. People were joking competitively about the holes. And it was pleasurable for us to watch people playing directly in front of us, while laughing and talking happily.
My boyfriend and I ate here a few days ago. We sat outside and being our fault we sat too close to the smokers. Icky. We wanted to enjoy the outside with our meal but lots of people kept popping over to the smoking area which is 4 seats facing the golf course along one corner of the fence that contains all the diners. If you aren't a smoker I recommend sitting as far away from this seating area as possible, although no guarantees about getting away from it. Otherwise, I guess just sit inside.
We shared an order of a Caesar salad and the fried raviolis. The salad dressing was very lacking, sort of a goop to slime the lettuce that didn't taste like anything. The croutons were out of a box, reminded me of Ms. Cubbison's. Too full of artificial ingredients for me, but I know a lot of people like them. We doused the salad with fresh ground pepper to get it down.
The fried raviolis were good. A little too much olive oil. When they first came out they were crisp but all the extra olive oil made them slimy and mushy, hard to bite into or cut. We asked for some marinara which solved that problem. The raviolis were cheese and basil filled topped with garlic, fresh tomato, and red onion.
It was a decent experience. I'd probably not get a salad again if I go back, but I hear their food is quite good. So perhaps I hit it on an off night.
Sweet little short course. If you come out on nice summer day, the trees provide amazing shade. Short enough to walk it, but carts are cheap too. Reasonable prices for 9 holes, and lots of discounts can be found to come play this place.
One of my local favs for a nice relaxing short game, but don't discount this course if you are a serious golfer, there is challenge and lots of uniqueness to each hole, which allows for it to be simple and pleasurable for the newbie golfer, yet offers challenge and intrique for the seasoned player.
a must play course.
LOVE this course. Alister Mackenzie of Augusta National and Pasatiempo fame built this for the a-hole world dominators at the Bohemian Club. It's like playing in a redwood tree cathedral. Just a 9 hole course, but I used every club in my bag, and only used my driver twice. The wife beat me though.......made me so mad........
What a tough little couse..
I have played here numerous times.. Usualy the weather is pretty nice.. It can get crowded. It just depends when you go play..
There are deals on http://golfnow.com..
The course is in pretty good shape... bring plenty of golf balls... the staff is nice.. which is a plus..
I will be back..
A classic Alistair MacKenzie design. How he built 9 challenging holes in such a small space blows my mind.
Do not play here if you have a wicked slice unless you like hikes in the redwoods. A typical noise heard out here is, "WHACK....THUNK...SON of a BITCH!"
4 stars for the towering redwoods alone.
This hidden golf course is tucked away up near the Russian River. I love that the clientele is a bunch of locals plus tourists-- yeah, there were mullets galore and some acid-washed cutoffs, but hey, at least they're not super pretentious.
The restaurant/bar is great-- definitely check out their Sunday brunch with complimentary champagne, and sit out on the deck underneath the umbrellas to enjoy it. Inside it's all rustic, but above the bar are two flat-screen TVs that you can watch golf on if you decide you're not up for playing.
If you're up in the area, it's probably a worthy pit stop for a meal.
