Do you need your knives sharpened?

If you said yes, then come here. These guys do an amazing job. In fact, I think most Chicago chefs come here to get their knives sharpened.

While I wait I walk around the store and see all of the fun cooking gadgets they have here. I never buy anything here because it is all marked up. Sorry but that is the truth!

They also have a parking lot too. Bonus!!!

I love this place. I was given a gift certificate for my birthday in order to get my knives sharpened. They were finished within a day,

I then asked about knife maintenance to the girl ringing up my sale and she launched into a very knowledgeable mini lesson on honing with a steel. I asked about the proper steel and she provided me with several choices, but did give her personal preference. What I appreciated the most is that she did not recommend the most expensive steel nor the steel made by my knife's manufacturer.

This is a high quality store ths provides amazing service and high quality sharpening.

There is also a parking lot nearby that I've heard is free parking for customers.

They were very friendly & did a great job on all 15 knives I took in. All kinds of wonderful cooking & baking supplies plus the largest selection of knives I have ever seen. I would go back & recommend them.

I visited NCS to get my knives sharpened at the recommendation of a classmate and was pleasantly surprised at how much cool stuff they had. I found a small, pink knife roll bag and an awesome magnetic chef's  knife cover, as  well as a bunch of other goodies that I put on my wishlist.

The staff is friendly, they sharpened my knives to perfection and culinary students get a 10% discount.

After all the great reviews by Yelpers, I decided to take 13 kitchen knives and a pair of shears in for sharpening.  They did a superb job while I waited -- and they had so many cool kitchen items that I ended up spending over $100 in addition to the sharpening fees.  I'll go back again whenever I have knife sharpening needs!

This is THE place for knives, cutlery, Le Creuset cookware, and other equipment for the hands of fine chefs (or those of us unworthy to wear the apron, but who like the toys of the pros).

I have mostly cheap kitchen equipment that I'm replacing piece by piece, so it was no surprise when my Farberware kitchen knife broke at the handle (the second in 8 years). I explained the problem to a helpful employee here, who assured me that none of the knives sold at Northwestern would ever break -- and if they did, they would be replaced for free.

But I don't expect the new knife set to have any problems. For $100, I got a complete set of the second-finest steel Germany has to offer, plus a block to store it in. I decided not to go for the top-of-the-line set at $250. Looking around, even the Internet couldn't beat this price.

This store employs the sharpest knives in the drawer -- and will sell them to you too.

What a cool place.  From the reviews, I was expecting a bigger place but it was packed with lots of culinary stuff and TONS of cutlery.  Hunting knives, survival knives, switchblades (maybe), and pocket knife contraptions that had knife, fork, spoon built in.  We saw probably the biggest ladle I've ever seen here.

I believe that if you want to hang your knives from hooks, they will punch holes in them here besides just doing sharpening.

They call themselves the candy store for chefs and that's no lie. You want pretty and high prices? Go to Williams-Sonoma or Sur La Table. You want the same stuff at rock-bottom price and maybe need to pick up a commercial meat grinder, too? This is your store. I get my knives sharpened here (and go to Issacson & Stein for fish while it's being done) and come here whenever I need something new for the kitchen that needs to last. Last word is from a chef who taught a knife skills class I took. While the place where the class was had a 10% discount on items used in the class, he specifically said: "If you're going to buy a knife, don't waste your money here. Go to Northwest Culterry." Who am I to argue?

Besides being the place in the city to get your knives sharpened (as other reviewers have mentioned), this is the place to get your kitchen supplies that you can't normally get at stores like Sur La Table.

Baking choc chip cookies and the recipe calls for a Size 20 ice-cream scoop? Northwestern Cutlery has got you covered even if you need a Size 14 or size 26 ice-cream scoop. Looking for pie weights for blind baking your pie crust? Northwestern Cutlery has got you covered. Specifically looking for a mandoline that is double bladed instead of single bladed? Northwestern Cutlery has it too. Investing in a Le Creuset cast iron pot? Northwestern has it too. Looking for a piping bag to frost your cupcakes? Or a flour sack? Yes, Northwestern has it too. And of course, you can get an array of kitchen knives here. They sell carrier bags specifically for storing, protecting, and transporting knives too.

The one thing I wished though was that they had cupcake paper liners. Still love this store though!

I was able to find some items here that I couldn't find at Sur La Table and found some of the same items cheaper. Ring cutters, Japanese mandolins, silicone baking molds, various size and shaped dishers, and a wide range of Global knives! Love love love this store!

It's the kid in a candy store feeling while actually doing something productive. If the candy store were an awesome wonderland of every candy you ever needed and staffed by the Keebler elves and Santa's workshop helpers.
In my years wandering the earth and being equally overwhelmed and underwhelmed by businesses and services, this place pretty simply and quickly delivers great services by professionals who very casually display a quiet efficiency in the way they go about the crafts that they so clearly enjoy.

Kudos, here's to your kind, and more like you.

This is a candy store for cooks, knives galore. You name the knife and most likely they will have it and reasonably priced. I've was looking for a 8" chefs knife, they asked me a variety of questions on how I will use the knife and suggested one. I've been using it for awhile and still loving it.

The services is impeccable, everyone there is so knowledgeable. If your a culinary student, just show your ID and get a discount on your purchases.

There is plenty of parking nearby and some streets have meters and some don't.

A friend took me to Northwestern Cutlery yesterday, knowing that I love to cook and that this little gem offered something special: knife sharpening.  I brought in my four most frequently used knives which I was about to sharpen myself (having purchased the equipment for this some years back.)  The shop itself is small but packed with a large selection of items for the cook, home or professional.  And the prices are much better than you find at Williams-Sonoma or other similar stores.  The store itself looks a bit more like the country store with old wood floors and little effort to make it look pretty or chic.  But who needs pretty and chic when you offer a great service and a large selection?  They also offer a private parking lot, which is very convenient.

My knives were expertly sharpened; much better than I could have done myself.  If you find yourself venturing to this area of Chicago, do bring your good knives along for a sharpening and while they are doing that, shop the wonderful store.

I am so glad Yelp brought me to this place! I had to get my mom's knives sharpened because she wouldn't do it herself. I don't think she's sharpened them since she bought them 15 years ago, so it was pretty bad. I was embarrassed to bring them in! One knife was even chipped at the tip. But they sharpened it right off. They did a really great job for $3.50 a knife, and I'll definitely be back in the future.

This place is pretty great.  The space is tiny, but they somehow manage to fit a lot of great cooking supplies in there.

A major bonus:  as opposed to Williams Sonoma and Sur La Table, instead of getting the stink eye from middle aged North Shore ladies who work there to "have something to do with their time", this 20 something enthusiastic home cook got it from chefs and culinary students (really, you needed to wear your chef's coat to shop for sheet pans? Ok, I get it... your gastrique is *probably* better than mine...).

I haven't tried the knife sharpening, that will definitely be on the docket soon.  My steel could use some pampering.

Only bummer here (besides chef-types thinking they own the joint), is that the hours aren't particularly convenient.

Was thinking about taking my knives to Sur La Table but a quick google search of "best place in chicago to get knives sharpened" revealed this place.  Some reviews state that they may not sharpen japanese knives to the correct angle but that is false.  They actually sell many of the major brand knives such as Shun and Global.  I was in an out of there in 15 minutes with my Shun and Global chef's knife restored to brand new.  I watched and they used a combination of a wet belt sander along with multigrit wetstones to finish.   The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because the belt sander left some scratch marks on my Shun, but hey, its also 3.50 a knife so...

They are currently having a sale for 30% off le crueset so if you got a hankering for a dutch oven, I'd go there quick!

My $160 Shun santoku had a bad encounter with a raw thigh bone of a measly 4lb frying chicken and it's immaculate, paper-thin blade came away dented and notched... so much for high-carbon Japanese super-steel.  Usually, if a person were to utterly destroy an over-expensive piece of hardware like this they'd probably be freaking out left and right, but one look at my mangled blade I knew that there was no need to worry because Northwestern Cutlery would have my back.  A short 5-min wait and $3.50 later, my useless little trophy was restored like new.

Even better than their sharpening services is their retail shop full of commercial kitchen equipment and gadgets.  From stock pots up to 100qts, to essential kitchen implements, to every kind of knife under the sun, they have it all -- if they don't carry it, you probably don't need it.  Prices tend to be very affordable and they have periodic mark-downs on entire collections of merchandise (like Le Creuset, All-Clad, Wüsthof, etc), and they also offer a nice discount for culinary students.

Went to get my knives sharpened today.  Thought I was going to have to leave them and come back at a later date.  No Sir!  Walked into the store and they offered to sharpen them right then and there.  Took about 10 minutes and I was given back some superbly sharpened blades of steel.
You can't get better service than that.
I wandered around the store and appreciated the variety of kitchenwares they have.  And I didn't think the prices were all that bad either. ( P.S.  They are having a 30% off sale on all their La Creuset pots and pans.)
The people were very friendly and helpful.  I appreciated the small shop atmosphere and will definitely be back.
Customer Service is alive and well at this place of business! (And that makes me happy!)

    A cook's dream!

I frequented Northwestern Cutlery often back in the day (okay it was only about 2-3 years ago) and I could spend an hour in there.   They don't have the useless avocado slicer that you'd find at William's Sonoma, instead they carry a variety of (useful) tools, pans, uniforms, and knives.   I will always remember the day when I went in there and was shocked to see half sheet pans for $5!!!!  That is how much they should cost, you shouldn't be paying $20 for a half sheet pan at William's Sonoma.   I highly recommend checking this place out, even if you're just browsing.

I know you.  Yeah, I know your type.  You think Williams-Sonoma, Sur La Table, or Crate and Barrel are the only stores in this great city serving up quality kitchenware.  Sure, I understand.  Those stores are brightly lit and appeasing to the eye.  The wall to wall offerings would make anyone drool.  Well, I'm here to tell you that you're wrong.  Those stores have no problem selling a $100+ knife but will they sharpen it for you?  No, but they will offer you outrageously expensive unit tasking tools you're kitchen doesn't need anyway.

So snap out of it and make sure you give this place a try.  They have a counter display of knives that runs almost the entire length of the store.  Behind that you'll find people sharpening knives on the spot and chatting with customers.  This may not be the largest kitchen supply store in the city but it definitely offers the right things.  In need of a chef coat, pants, or a chinoise?  All available here.

One last thing, don't be a doofus like me and make sure you park in the parking lot next to the building.  This little tip could have saved me some trouble!  So head on down to pick up a meat slicer or 3.  You'll be glad you did.

I've been to some fancy schmancy cooking stores before and been delighted by the beautiful displays of cutlery and other expensive kitchen goods I lust over (Le Creuset). Northwestern Cutlery is not one of those uber chic stores, instead, it's a kitchen supply store with knife sharpening. They also do sell some awesome kitchenware stuff too!

I came here yesterday to get a bread knife for my mom's birthday. I figured Northwestern would be the perfect place to get her a really good bread knife. I was right on about this too. Upon entering, I saw the display of knives. Their displays are cut and dry nothing fancy here. I mentioned what I needed and was immediately helped. I tested the weights of the knives since my mom uses Cutco knives for comparison. In less than five minutes, I had a Wustoff bread knife in hand which happened to be on sale too. This awesome bread knife can be sharpened too which makes it an even greater buy.

I didn't expect such an easy shopping experience here. I like their no frills approach to kitchenware and knives. I can't wait for my mom to see her new bread knife!

I don't drive to work often, but whenever I do, I make absolutely certain that I stop at NW Cutlery. It started with a quick stop and walk around. I think that I got butchers twine and a pastry cutter. The next trip was a ravioli roller, some mixing bowls, some aluminum pans, and a juicer.

The last time was a landmark visit. I had just smoked 5 lbs. of bacon and was told nicely by my wife that I could not buy a meat slicer. My next best thing was a commercial grade slicing knife. There were 3 tubs of knives for around 20 bucks a pop. They all had a 14 inch-ish blades, but one was a pointed tip pirate knife like scepter. I asked the guy behind the desk which he would buy. He responded in like, "Which would YOU buy?" He knew that I was going to buy the Crocodile Dundee bacon slicer. Not to mention that my Wustoff Chef's Knife cost me 6 times more.

That is why I go to NW Cutlery. They know that I want the sword and not only do they have it, they sharpen it and roll it in the Sunday Trib.

My axe had hewn its last victim, while the blunt force carried by the 40lb axehead can still crush bone and rend humans to their fate it was dull.

I beckoned the Axegrinder forward, sincerely convincing him of my fondness for this particular cadaver creator, and he roared. A deep roar one might find through the closest bonds of brotherhood, a respect for honed steel.

He threw the mighty axehead against the wits of the grinder, flecks of sinew and teeth flying off at high speed. A cusp began to form as a perfect wire was burned from the surface of a once dying tool and my strength was once again renewed.

Conveniently large cutting boards for dealing with limbs are cheap!

Here's my newest guilty pleasure: professional knife sharpening.

I'm not a big-time professional chef or anything, just a home cook whose idea of a perfect Saturday afternoon involves a strong cup of coffee and a Barefoot Contessa cookbook. And, to be honest, I was a little worried that my standard-issue knife block would be turned away. Not so! They sharpened up those bad boys in about 15 minutes, for $3 or so each.

Freakishly convenient parking lot. Lots of friendly folks. Knife sharpening while you wait. I can think of only one problem. After 15 minutes of browsing, I had a hard time walking out with just the knives I brought in. Those cheap-o bread pans in particular were calling my name!

It probably wasn't the smartest thing to make this my first stop yesterday and then spend the rest of the day riding around on a bike with a shoulder bag full of razor sharp knives.  (equals the opposite of wearing a helmet?)

Much more than I expected in all departments.  They have the Lodge cast iron reversible griddle I want and extensive cookware otherwise.  It was $12 for two large and two small knives...fixed the kink in one of them.  They sharpen while you wait right behind a roughly 20 ft. long, four shelf, glass display case with every kind of knife you might need in or out of the kitchen.

I practiced good self restraint and didn't buy anything but after spending what might have been about 15 minutes in this store I left feeling a little more in-the-know about cooking products and cutlery.  Noted that there is a parking lot as well.
