5 reviews for Northwest Park Golf Course
I would probably consider this my home course. I live the closest to it and I've played it the most. It's got wide fairways, 18 holes and an inside 9 thati's pretty fun to play with. My favorite hole is #8 because it's got a hugeeeeeee bend to the right. Perfect for my slice. I've gotten many eagle opporunities on this hole. But no eagles to count.
On its peak, the conditions are very good. But in the beginning and tail end of the season, I've seen the greens be really, really dry and patchy, but I've also seen it as good as some of the other public courses in this area.
$13 for a jumbo bucket is not too shabby for their driving range as well.
I played NW Park about 7 years ago and was not impressed one bit. However upon my return this week, they have put a lot of money into the fairways and the greens. The greens in particular are absolutely outstanding in terms of shape. Come summer when the bake out they are not going to be easy to putt for most of us. THESE GREENS ARE SOME OF THE NICEST GREENS IVE EVER SEEN AT A PUBLIC COURSE.
Thats not an exaggeration.
However, there are caveats:
The pace of play can be mind-numbing. Advice...steer clear of here on a weekend. If you can get out on a weekday, before noon, you should be ok. Don't expect to fly around the course, its still a muni despite the nice condition.
The price is very very reasonable, at least early in the season. $29.95 to walk 18 during the week. Considering crap courses like Rock Creek Park are $25, this place is a steal. Its just farther out from the city if you live in the district.
Another nice thing is there is plenty of legnth to the layout...back tees are over 7200 yards which is plenty long. Middle tees are about 6800. Couple nice Par 5s, relatively wide-open layout you aren't going to get in too much trouble but once the rough grows in it's going to toughen up.
My opinion is this is one of the nicest MCG golf public courses in the area, just below Hampshire Greens. Worlds above Rock Creek Park and East Potomac.
I was a little skeptical after it took me almost an hour to get there from Capital Hill but it was worth the drive. $40 for a midweek round and a cart which is one of the cheapest around and the kicker is that this course is in better shape(fantastic greens and fairways, and rough that made you pay if you didn't hit the narrow fairways) and over 7300 yards from the tips. I played with three single digit handicappers and all of us we're mentally exhausted by 16. It would have been 5 stars if they could have figured out how to let us pay in the pro shop, had a starter, or had a marshall to speed up our 5 hour round. I will be back
***Warning!! This is a dull review about a golf course.***
So it took our foursome five hours to complete 18 holes here...NOT GOOD. For the most part, it's an easy course with lots of straight fairways and minimal hazards; we just sucked. Prices were pretty cheap for a twilight tee-off. I think it was like $27 for 18. Northwest is worth a visit if you are a beginner b/c the people playing ahead/behind us sucked as well.
Over 5 1/2 hours to play 18 holes the last two times I have played here -- best stay away unless you go out to play around 3 pm....they do little if anything to move things along -- but still a great layout and in very good shape this year.
