Simply the best bookstore I have ever wandered into.
Luckily, I live with a couple of big-time readers. (And I'm already grooming my 5 month old to be one as well!) As we walked into this impressive, truly beautiful shop, we all meandered to different areas of the store and were equally impressed.
All of the Yelpers before me describe this local gem perfectly. I personally fell in love with a few things in particular... I really enjoyed the numerous employee reviews, and the children's section is simply outstanding. It's absolutely packed with classics, great educational toys, a terrific assortment of books and toys geared toward infants, cool outfits, a wonderful display of newer releases... there's no way I can possibly do it justice with a mere description. (Not sure if other Yelpers have already mentioned, but there is a "frequent buyer" type program offered here, including online purchases. And while most of the books I found were list price, they do have used book sections, as well as some sale items.)
If you are in the Southern Vermont area (or you're not, but looking for yet another reason to take a weekend jaunt here), definitely stop by the Northshire. (Plan accordingly, I wish I had been able to look around all afternoon!) If you love books, it's really almost magical.
VT is a destination station for a weekend away from life in NYC, and this place is on the list of places we MUST stop at. It's the kind of bookstore that you can easily become distracted and lose several hours roaming around the shelves. They have a tremendous variety of books, and an entire area for other forms of media too. You can go in with a book in mind, or even just a genre, and come out with three or four selections from genres you weren't even considering.
Bring extra money; you'll find many books you'll want to bring home. It's like The Strand, but in Vermont, and the prices are slightly higher.
How much do I love this place? Yeah, a LOT.
They have everything. They're the only place in the area that carries any sort of a music selection [one that isn't just the WalMart stuff, that is], they have great gifts, a lovely little cafe, wonderful staff, and -- best of all -- an incredible book selection. The place definitely utilizes every nook and cranny of the house it inhabits, and carries everything from the mainstream to the obscure, the used and the new. This is a place I'd love to see in Chicago, and one of the few things I missed when I left Bennington. While the rest of Manchester is chock full of outlet stores, Northshire is one of those places that just feels like a breath of fresh air.
Yeah, I concur. 5 stars. For all the reasons everyone else already said.
I can (and do) get stuff cheaper on Amazon. But it's a bit more fun to spend an afternoon here browsing.

This is one of those rare, white-elephant businesses that every other shop only dreams it could be. If the Northshire doesn't have it, they'll get it. This is the best bookstore I've been in on the east coast. It reminds me of Powell's in Portland, OR. (only not as overwhelmingly huge). They have many, many staff reviews in every section. The staff is knowledgable, friendly and willing to help. They even have community bulletin boards! Where you can see them!
This is an independent, community based bookstore. This is not a discount bookstore. They have a bargain bin, but you pay the cover price for most books.
They offer author events most Sundays and some other days. Check out their website for the calendar of events.
We heard David Sanger speak about his new book, "The Inheritance". We had our copy signed. The staff at the bookstore has done this before and has an excellent system for organizing a crowd for a book signing.
Check out the cafe. They make wonderful coffee and have very good sandwiches and pastries. We split a chicken curry sandwich on sourdough bread. Served with chips and a pickle...yum! Plenty of seating. Order at the counter and have a seat up the stairs. They will bring your food out to you. We had a dessert...it was a brownie covered in chocolate ganache topped with a sliced strawberry. Delish.
The chai tea latte is good. As is the mocha-java...half coffee, half hot-chocolate. YUM!
Come here for the books, community, coffee, food, music, events. We make a point to stop by every time we're in Manchester. It's only a bit more than an hour from Saratoga Springs. Easy day trip.
You would never guess that one of the greatest independent bookstores in the world is located in tiny lil ol Manchester, VT. But it is.
Northshire is also one of those wonderful hybrid places with a cafe built right in, and it's located right in the heart of town. It has fantastic collections in some sections that are often sorely neglected, like poetry and nonfiction, including history. It's also a great community resource for readings and classes, and they have great gift ideas. I've received more than one handbag from Northshire.
Somewhere in a land far far away (from my home state Maryland)
there lies a bookstore---not just any bookstore-----
a magical enchanted bookstore with
art festooning the outer fortress
friendly staff that read and work at a bookstore by career
cozy nooks filled with readers' accessories and knick-knacks
events with engaging authors
2 floors of well stocked organized sections
staff recommendations and highlight books worth picking up
unicorns grazing upon bright lillies and poppies in the foyer*
And this magical bookstore---is it run by a Dark Overlord or a large Conglomerate? NAY!
It is the mystical and rare independent bookstore.
HUZZAH!
*Disclaimer: unicorns, lillies and poppies may actually only exist in the Children's section within the pages of an actual book.

Best East Coast Book Store!!!! Northshire book store is filled with excellent books. The place is uniquely laid out, as the home it takes up offers up little nooks and crannies to stuff book in. They've got a great kids section which has education artsy games and toys as well. This books store is a big stop on the book tour circuit, thus, there are often authors and scholars giving free public talks. Some often understocked sections, like Poetry and Science, are given equal space at Northshire.
And, the best thing of all, is the attached cafe to the store with a vast teas and coffees, in addition to some of the best sandwiches and sugary treats!!!
Set inside a historic property in the center of picturesque Manchester, "the Northshire" is simply one of the best bookstores in America. Their inventory is impressive, but their ambiance of nooks and crannies and lovely reading benches is even more so. Truly, it is as good as it gets for book lovers, especially those who like avoiding the bland Borders warehouse experience.
Sweet little bookstore with lots to offer and an atmosphere that makes you want to curl up with a delicious book right there, or maybe walk over to The Lawyer and the Baker for an incredible Almond Scone and iced coffee. The place makes me want to never walk into a Barnes and Noble again. Wish I had more time there.
By far my favorite place in Southern VT. When we moved near Manchester it was an immediate pull and I've never left. I agree with all previous reviews. To me what stands apart is the level of service and knowledge of the staff. Not only are they friendly but they answer your questions authentically. And if they don't know the answers they will find the appropriate seller who does. I love their selection of gifts, many local made and eco-friendly. It is always my first stop for gift shopping. The children's section is an oasis for children and adults alike. One of the best chidren's sections I've seen. My son gives it a high five. Lastly, are the comfy chairs and couches that make it difficult to pick up and leave. We love Northshire. Join the e-mail list if you can which updates monthly on new books and in store events.
