This is where I take friends from out of town when I'm trying to convince them to move to Philly. North Third has substance and style and warmth. Not to mention one of my favorite hamburgers in the world. It's huge and juicy and when you ask for it rare, it comes out RARE. The selection of toppings is great, I usually go with boursin cheese and mushrooms.  I can only ever finish half so I get a bonus breakfast for the next day!

The beer list is also great, lots of local stuff. The service is nice and the atmosphere is awesome. Cool and weird shit hanging all over the walls. You might need a flashlight to read your menu and you might have to scream for the people across the table to hear you, but that's because this is a bar. The food is just so amazing that you might mistaken it for a restaurant.

I have a Northern Liberties food formula: Honey's for brunch. N 3rd for dinner. With a varied menu (fish tacos, hummus, salads, dumplings, and nightly specials), N 3rd takes a step up from traditional pub/bar fare and offers enough creativity to satisfy the foodiest of foodies, but enough simplicity to appease even the picky eaters.

Their cocktails are pretty stellar too and the beer list boasts all the local favorites plus other microbrew staples. With the giant projector in the backroom, this place is going to be my post-season spot.

It's bars like THIS that keep me coming to Philly for the nightlife.  It's a laid back, hip, fun place to grab a beer.  We sat at the back bar and ordered food.  I had the pierogies...which were done nicely.

There is an extensive bottled beer selection...but I was surprised at the limited, though solid, draft beer selection.

I really liked the bartender (thought I forget her name).  She was quick with service and sociable.  She even cracked a few well-timed jokes at our expense...playfully, though.

I'd definitely recommend North 3rd...and will certainly go back.

Tried a handful of times and it looks nice from the kerb, but frankly doesn't cut it when compared to any number of similar places within a few blocks. The menu was fine but a bit dull, the food quality was fine but not brilliant, mediocre even, the beer selection was fine but pales in comparison to the neighbors. Plus the service was consistently poor, every time.

If you go, it'll be a fine time, it's a nice enough place and most anywhere else in the city would be a solid bar. I've never been for brunch, though, so maybe that's what I'm missing.

Actually, what am I saying...go here, this place is the best, and stay away from the bars I'd rather go to.

I have gone to north third many times for dinner, once for brunch.  They have great wings, great local beers on tap and usually have great interesting specials to try every night.  One special sticks out in my mind very clearly even though its been almost 2 years since I ate it.  venison and polenta...Mmm it was one of the best meals I've eaten, ever.

I've taken visiting friends here even my family.  The service has always been great, only a minor complaint - the music is so loud all the time, I wish they'd turn it down slightly until later in the night.   You can bypass  this music issue by sitting outside in the summertime/fall.  The corner its on is starting to look really nice so its pleasant to sit outside and look around while you eat.  There is also nice decor inside, and they can completely open the side of the building with their fancy fold up doors.

Anyway, if you haven't tried north third, do.

To summarize my last review for North 3rd - BOOBS. Or rather the painting of them that makes for a good landmark when your trying to organize telling people where to meet up. But when I stopped in after a successful Elite Event on Monday, I couldn't help but notice how much more prevalent they were then I previously realized. when mapping out the decor it went a little bit like this - Gargoyles, boobs, dragon, boobs, butterflies, boobs, skulls, more boobs, robot dog. for better or worse, at least they gave you some things to look at.

But that's not the reason you stop at a place like North 3rd. If your like me then you go there for it's unpretentious service, it's good beer selection, awesome food, and things like FancyPants Cinema. Of course the fact that it's one of the better outdoor seating spots in NoLibs doesn't hurt either.

For a huge impromptu group of 20 on a Monday, our server was attentive as he could be. And I had an incredible pound of Buffalo wings for $8. And overall the surrounding decor of oddness brought out the best of our vast group. recommended as always.

My boyfriend and I had plans to eat brunch up the street, but decided against waiting around for 45+ minutes for a table. We headed to North Third and we greeted and seated right away.

He chose the eggs benedict and I went for the Monte Cristo. Our meals came out within 10-15 minutes and were served with a decent size serving of fruit. My meal was a little overwhelming, but that's to be expected from a sandwich made with french toast instead of ordinary bread. At least now I get to look forward to having my leftover breakfast for dinner!

Two thumbs way up, I look forward to trying North Third again soon.

Whenever the option is there, I choose to sit outside usually to avoid the loud babbling of drunken women who talk about the size of their date's package, and to avoid hearing several times about how they only date "assholes". However, sometimes my luck doesn't favor my options and I am privileged to listen to this banter, as tonight's luck wouldn't have it any other way.

For the many times that I've come here, the food was good, drinks were better, atmosphere agreeable. Long Island Iced Teas at this joint will set you lightly floating into a happy stupor, let me tell you.
Having been on the famished side, I took no more than two sips of my "tea" and was engrossed in the conversation that the two ditzes were having. Yeah, awesome.

In terms of food, the wings were decent, the fries were used to soak up the lingering alcohol, the dumplings were overpriced, the hummus plate was a nice touch, and the black bean soup was quite enjoyable.

The service has been pleasing on many accounts with conversations and laughter included. Possibly because I was very friendly due to my new Tea friend. Great times overall and I will definitely be returning.

I have been here several times and do not plan on going back. They have decent beer and food, but not worth putting up with the slow waitstaff who continuously make mistake after mistake... like my vegan burrito which got served to me twice with cheese and sausage! I love when places don't even do anything to reconcile the problem either. I left after 2 hours, only full from my beer because they couldn't produce something I could eat,

My boyfriend and I were enjoying a nice stroll through the Northern Liberties last week when we stumbled upon North Third. I recalled reading several good reviews for it, so we decided to stop in for some light fare and a beer or two. When we entered the place, the first thing I noticed was the amount of light flooding the room. Also, I'm a sucker for exposed brick, so I was quite charmed by its appearance. There were a number of strange things adorning the walls that kept my attention while I was waiting for our food to arrive (that isn't to say that the food took a long time to come out, because it did not).

We were greeted immediately when we walked in the door and seated by a pleasant hostess right by the wide-open window. It was a beautiful day, so it was nice to get a little of the outside inside. Our waiter came by less than a minute later to take our drink order. Since I'm not really a warm-weather-beer fan (wheat beer is definitely not my bag), their tap list wasn't all that intriguing to me. I won't fault them for that, though. They do offer Dogfish Head 60-Minute IPA and Sly Fox O'Reily's Stout as standards, which perked me up a bit, though in the end I decided on a Bell's Two-Hearted Ale, since you can never go wrong with that.

After dropping off our beers, our waiter took our order. I chose the Tuna Burger and my boyfriend ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich. We were both pretty impressed with the quality of the food. My tuna burger was moist, perfectly spiced, and delicious (not to mention that it must have been at least half a pound), and I loved the wasabi mayo! Like Meg noted, the fries weren't great, but they were edible at the very least. (I was glad they weren't that good, because there were far too many on my plate and I would have eaten way more than necessary if they had been better.) My boyfriend enjoyed his pulled pork and also commented on the huge portion. Needless to say, we didn't have to worry about lunch the next day.

Overall, a solid performance from North Third. I wasn't blown away, but I will definitely be back to give it another go.

best bloody marys in town, it's like a meal!  i intend to get drunk tonight just so i can have one tomorrow.

other than that, it's just solid. i go mainly for brunch, but my parents love to come for dinner when they're in the city. my friend comes here from south philly at least once a week. if there isn't an intriguing special, the regular menu offers plenty of solid dishes.

i was a doubter at first, but since moving to this neighborhood i have really come to appreciate the simple goodness that is north third.

The second star is because the food tasted good, but that was the only thing this place had to offer.  I have never been this ignored by a waitress before.

This was my first time going here because i had heard good things about it from friends, but for some reason our waitress had no time for us.  We wanted to sit outside, but waited at least 5 minutes before the hostess even noticed us, then we were just going to order drinks.  The waitress, not too politely, informed us that outdoor seating was "dinner only" so we took a look at the menu and after a few minutes ordered the hummus plate.

Things seemed to be going fine, until I finished my beer and the waitress neglected to stop back.  After 20 minutes with an empty glass the bus boy (not my waitress) finally asked me if I wanted another drink.  I asked him for the check and when the waitress finally showed up again I was gracious and left a minimal tip (for minimal service).

Sorry, N. Third, you will not be getting my business again.

how have a I lived in Philadelphia for this long without finding this place! A friend and I were in the mood for a low key outdoor brunch (with maybe a side of Bloody Mary) and a change of scenery and this place fit the bill on paper.

Walked up to find so much more.... Seated in a perfect outdoor table in just minutes on a  sunny 75 degree Sunday at 11 AM isn't an easy task but they made it happen.  They also had one of the best Bloody Mary's I have had in the city.

Their brunch has something for everyone.... I had the bagel and lox platter which I had been dreaming about all morning, and my friend the Monte Cristo (super tasty).

If it hadn't been for a on-coming medical freight train about to hit my friend, we would have been at the bar all afternoon. And their bar menu and beer selection would have kept us entertained the whole time.  Looking forward to the next opportunity to head up to NoLibs to check it for dinner!

A party of three should be easy to accommodate for Brunch - that's not the case for Honey's on a Sunday at 11am... My partner, one of his close friends from undergraduate, and I decided to meet up this Sunday for Brunch at Honey's. We got there only to find a 45 minute wait for inside dining or immediate seating outside (mind you today is roughly 51F, cloudy, and windy - not an option). We politely cued up to wait... About after 3 minutes of waiting, we decided to check out the neighborhood. We made it one block and stumbled upon North Third! The outside is cool, sleek, and somewhat sophisticated - very comparable to Honey's but with a more modern look. It had that hole in the wall feel, and best of all - there was no long line of hipsters in their frighteningly tight jeans, beat down tees, and overly absorbed attitudes milling about outside...

Without skipping a beat, we decided to check it out! The inside is very, um, I guess eclectic would be the word. A nice bar, masquerade masks, carnival masks, and random paper-mache masks adorn the walls. There's even an eagle kite affixed to the ceiling above the bar! Pretty cool. We were seated in less than 5 minutes in a booth right by the window!

The menu was small, but had a lot of really good sounding options. My partner got the French Toast (big surprise on that one), our friend got Huevos Rancheros, and I got the chicken & broccoli rabe omelet. The food was good, the service was wonderful, and we did not feel like we were being forced to eat and vacate so the next hungry patrons could sit. The conversation was good, the company great, and the place outstanding!

This used to be my favorite spot in No Libs. It's changed though. In all honesty it is a three star place now, but I'm giving it four stars for two reasons:

1) Went here for brunch and we had to wait a bit, which was fine. Her little dog got to make some friends with other pooches, which was good. And the server was really cool and gave me a couple Stoli rocks for free, which was great!

2) Fancy Pants Theater - Every Tuesday, the cast of usual Philly short film folks get together and watch an array of bizarre, quirky, and sometimes brilliantly funny short films. All made by local filmmakers. Have had so many great times watching these little flics, such a great feeling to be around people who are outside the "system" making films bc they love to, not bc they are trying to be famous.

So...All in all, I miss the old days here. Last summer could find me at North Third four nights a week. Now, it's a little over run by a new breed that has taken over No Libs...

The Hipster Yuppies...

Never thought those words would go together, but they wander in pairs and packs up and down second and third street every day.

I miss when No Libs was all struggling artists and strippers. It was a more honest place to hang...

I have a soft spot in my heart for this place because I screened my first film here.  It is a classic Northern Liberties landmark.  It's what parents and people from Manayunk like to call "funky."  And what I call home.

That said, the food never impresses me.  Today at brunch I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy.  The biscuits were incredibly dry and the sausage tasted like hot dogs.  My friend did love his burger.

Also, my Bloody Mary was disappointing.  Unbalanced with too much celery salt and not enough horseradish.  Come to think of it, there was absolutely no heat to it at all.  I still drank two of them of course.

But, I will still go back time and again to drink a beer and watch the Phillies game or a pretentious video screening. It is what it is, and I'm okay with that.

I consider this one of the best spots in Northern Liberties. Brunch, Dinner and Late night, it serves a well-rounded selection of schnazzed-up American fare (burgers, salads, eggs Benedict, etc.) with tasty starters, edamame, calamari and more. And I absolutely love the beets and goat cheese salad!

The beer selection is good, and they have been focusing on the local varieties available, which I can always appreciate. Speaking to that, they have been known to do a few special events, such as Dogfish Head tastings, etc. On Thursdays, they offer movie night in the back room.

Nice mixed crowd of folks but sometimes the music volume is cranked too high for any decent conversation. However, I have yet to leave the place disappointed.

And a cautionary note to those with children, in the back room, there are many paintings of bare-breasted women, or like my friend likes to say, the boob room.

A tried and true consistent neighborhood fave.  It's in heavy rotation for my places to go.

What I dig about the place:
-  unpretentious atmosphere
-  decent, fast service
-  menu hasn't changed in the four years I've lived here
-  the soup specials are huge and are always DEELICIOUS
-  rarely had a meal I didn't like here
-  2 options for bars (one in the front and one in the back)
-  lots of high top tables by the bar
-  a brunch that rivals Honey's Sit 'n Eat
-  Crispy Chicken Sandwich (Guac + mayo +bacon + challah bread = big YUM),  Mussels with Coconut and Curry, a big steamin' bowl of edamame, scrumptious salads. (you need not order all these at the same time)
-  they always bring water orders first whether you asked for it or not.  My thirst thanks you.  Reminds me to hydrate before I begin to indulge.
-  funky, weird, controlled-chaos-garage-sale-chic décor and lights strung up everywhere.  Who doesn't like a set of breasts staring at you while you eat brunch in the back room?
-  Mon - Wed nights are cool here and late afternoons during the weekend
-  patio space!

What I don't dig about this place:
-  the lighting in certain parts of the restaurant (depending on the time of day, too), especially the back room by the second bar, it's a total dungeon.  You can't see squat: the menu, your food, the company you're eating with; I'm all about mood lighting, but this is ridiculous.  Get some more creepy lights in some spaces, or just replace those that have burned out eons ago.
-  the menu hasn't changed in the four years I've lived here.
-  I've never had a meal I LOVED here.  Menu and offerings are straightforward standards.  I've just never convulsed with culinary delight over the food here.
- Thurs evenings to Sat evenings place is always jammed, I like my N. 3rd to be lightly packed.  The place will also often just get unexpectably full on random nights.
- Fries are so-so (I'm very particular about fried potatoes, and potatoes in general)

As you can see, the pros totally outweigh the cons here, and that's why I always come back.

Being from London, one of the foods I miss the most is good fish and chips. The version I had here twice was probably not very authentic - it was better. Two really generous pieces of fish, perfectly crisp and flavourful batter, and good "fries". Not fat and greasy the way they should be, but I know you Yanks don't really appreciate that, so these will do just fine.

I wanted to try something different the second time I went, but the fish was so good that I was unable to...

I am definitely a fan. They have a pretty descent beer selection, and it's about average price.

We had the wings and french fries with the spicy mayo sauce for appetizer. This was very delicious. I also tried some chicken sandwich and the BBQ ribs, both were very good.

*Note - the wings were awesome. They are as good, if not better than McGillans or Moriarties if you've had theirs.

Will go back again, hopefully soon!

Busy chilly night
Pulled pork sammie made me burn
Cool visceral vibe

Talk about nick of time. We got there just in time to be able to switch from a tiny two top, to a much cozier booth just before the bus pulled up and filled N. 3rd to the gills...well, no bus was seen, but it filled up quick. Be warned, I don't think this is a random occurrence. :)

I love the look of this place. Low lit, exposed brick, adorned by an eclectic array of art that runs the gamut from nude paintings of varied talent to small mixed media pieces.

There really wasn't anything on the menu I wasn't interested in trying and in the end I settled on the pulled pork spare rib sandwich with horseradish sauce. While incredibly delicious it did give me the worst heartburn ever (I realize this is hard to lay at the feet of the sandwich, but all I can say is I rarely get heartburn...)

Service was polite and attentive. Nothing stood out extra special or glaringly wrong, which is in my opinion the text book definition of how service should be.

Big kicker was my new favorite beer, Bells Two Hearted Ale, was a dollar cheaper than at Good Dog (sorry to throw you under the bus, I still luv ya GDB)

Like the four stars say, "Yay, I'm a fan"

Living only two blocks away, I find myself coming here week after week. Whether for brunch, dinner , or just a great drink this place has become one of my favorite hangouts that never disappoints.  Whether your an epicurean or just want a good place to hang out, this is where locals have come to trust and love with a great menu and an eclectic atmosphere. As a bonus, they almost always play good music (except the other night they had some weird mid-90's reggae rap going on).  Anyway, definitely worth a visit and come on a Tuesday night for the short independent films.

I've been going to this place for as long as I can remember - 6 years? 7? It's got such a great combination of elements, some rotating art on the walls, a solid beer menu, tasty and unpretentious food, and though not so much as the neighborhood has evolved, but still almost always fun and interesting people to talk with. Weekends are a bit crazy, but for a relaxed midweek night out this is still my favorite spot in town.

I was not impressed.  It was rather loud.  The food was OK, but over-priced, along with the rest of the menu.  The beer selection was pretty good though.  The waitress was kind of creepy, but nice.  The crowd was a mix of yuppies and hipsters, and a few sportos.  The vegetarian selection was limited.  Also, there are only two, single person bathrooms, both of which are unisex.  The chick before me peed all over the seat.  YUCK!

All and all, not a very good experience.  I doubt I'll go there again.

been here a few times and i've always been pretty satisfied with the service, the food, and the prices. the atmosphere is great because you can often sit outside or sit near the windows, which is always a plus.

excellent sandwiches. and the fries are okay, too. not great, but okay.

great beer. word.

Oh n.3rd, you came just when they couldn't stuff another hipster into Standard. Then Standard enlarged and left you to be enjoyed by all.

Never saw it too too crowded in here, always got a place to sit. Beer menu is a 7 out of ten. food is about the same. I like the ribs and the wings both done with the same sweet and sour type sauce on them.

The place, like most f-ing places these days caters more to yuppies wanting dinner than drunks wanting drinks and that's what it is and we all must acknowledge and respect that. It is good for what it does and when I am in the hood it's where I tend to wind up. I am a boring dude, believe me.

They have Hitachino Nest White Ale and that is cool (it just happens to be 6.50, but that beer is overpriced by the case anyway).

I like North Third. I don't love it.

If North Third were home decor, would it be wallpaper. Tasteful wallpaper, but after a few days you wouldn't really notice it anymore, it would just be there.

The food is good and they have a good selection of beers, but there isn't anything that separates them from every other Norther Liberties bar/restaurant. I'll find Standard Tap, North Third and Johnny Brenda's pretty interchangeable. I usually bounce to which ever one I can get a seat at first.

I am all about it - great menu for when you want a burger on the cheap or the badass chicken breast / spinach / mash potatoes with some oysters for an appetizer... it's pretty all-purpose and good.  Good beers on tap and some solid mix drinks as well.  One of the most reliable places for me in Philly.

My beef is that, unlike other respectably hip neighborhoods, No-Libs evidently has no law that requires restaurants to have at least one or two vegan entrees; North Third doesn't seem to want to follow the rule on its own.  C'mon, it's hard to coax a vegan date here when all she is getting is hummus (and some stolen fries or mash from my plate).  For a town that  caters to the vegans pretty well, I'd expect it from North Third.

That said, if you eat meat, N.3rd's freakin' awesome spot.

My boyfriend and I came to eat here last Thursday night.  The place was definitely interesting, my boyfriend especially loved the picture of the boobs right behind our table. It was a tad too dark in there more my liking though.  The food was pretty decent.  We got the pulled pork sandwich - awesome ciabatta bread, the meat was tasty but seemed like it needed some bbq sauce or some type au jus for dipping; the quesadilla - delicious, loved the pico; and the calamari - nice sized pieces that were cooked just right.  The food was steaming hot and did not take long to be served to us which I never complain about.  Overall good experience.

As an off shoot from getting thoroughly annoying and hungry standing in a waiting line at Honey's Sit 'n Eat - Would definitely suggest walking over to this place instead!
The doors open later but there's plenty of room and the food is just a good. The service is awesome and the there isn't a line to get in...

Best thing about this place? Neither you nor your dining companions have to choose what type of food you'd like to eat- they have everything!  And it is all delicious. Case in point- last time I ate there I started with some edamame before moving onto a tasty and uber-filling bowl of chicken corn chowder.  My friends ate a burger, spring rolls, pierogies and a chicken quesadilla.  The cuisine of the world is your oyster at North Third.

And if you need any other prompting, they have Allagash White, which is my summertime boyfriend.

I pretty much agree with EVERYBODY (and I mean everybody) else on N. 3rd.  Great food, great & busy artsy eye-catching decor and perfect for brunch.  (SCORE!  A near-perfect bloody mary with a great kick to it.)

We enjoy it here - but it can be a crowded cluster-f&%k at peak times.

A great place for a late-spring/early-summer dinner with it's cozy atmosphere and good food.
The owner was a really nice guy and the waiters have always been very friendly.
I wish I still had a connection to NL, mainly because it was my late childhood stomping ground. :)

I've been here for Fancypants Cinema on Tuesday nights maybe 2-3 times. Come around for this event, Scott Johnson is a great emcee. Plus you get to watch movies by local filmmakers.

It's a nice looking bar. The mussels are good, the calamari was poor (seriously, the quality was like the frozen boxes you get at the supermarket), drinks are affordable and strong. I'd like to try more of their food!

Since I've only been here Tuesday nights, parking isn't a big problem. Plus further up is a little strip mall with additional parking. I haven't had problems but I would say park at your own risk.
