So a mystery foot injury kept me hobbling for all but the last day of my week in Hawaii and I figured why not do something that I'm waaaay less likely to try in cold, SF-bay waters but have always wanted to check out: surf. Booked a last minute lesson the day before via the website (extra points for paying / reserving online) and Carol gave me a call back within a couple hours to confirm time / meetup place.

The next morning I met up with Carol and another student at a really nice, small beach. The other gal had a few lessons under her belt so she took off on one of the boards. After some instruction on surf theory, water-area conditions and dry-land form practice Carol put on some fins and we paddled out.

The 2nd wave she pushed me out on I stood up and rode it in (failed to move beyond almost-standing in the 1st wave due to stunned 'oh my gawd i'm "surfing"' motor skills error). In between waiting for waves she'd give me more lessons and then would push me into a wave and shout what I should be doing. Very rad and super fun.

Extra mile: I got to come back later in the day and surf again. Stopped by at around 3pm and took one of the student boards again and caught a few waves on my own. Carol ended up joining me out there and gave me a few more tips while out on the water--and when she wasn't catching her own waves.

Bonus points: sea turtles. I'm not even kidding--the morning lesson had a few of them hanging around the shallows enjoying some breakfast. Paddling out, one guy I saw a few times and he'd pop out of the water as I was going by, give me a look and then dive under again. Not that Carol can control sea turtles but it was definitely an extra treat on an otherwise perfect day.

Carol was awesome - very patient and encouraging.  This was my first time surfing.  In no time we all were surfing!  She was literally in the ocean with us, waiting for the perfect wave and she reminded me what to do once I caught the wave.  I scheduled my lesson on line using her website and paying thru paypal.  She called me back promptly and we were set to go!  I highly recommend her!  Mahalo.

North Shore Surf Girls is the definition of Aloha.  Carol, Tamaiti and the gang really show you the heart of Hawaii - both in their love for their beautiful islands and in their wonderful personalities.  Plus, they are amazing teachers...amazing.  I was boarding like I never thought I would after a day with Carol plus she filled us up with the spirit of Hawaii with her stories and talk.  It was the best day of our vacation - a day where we really got the feel and taste of Oahu and the North Shore.  If you are going to Hawaii and you want to get a feel for how beautiful it really is...AND get amazing surfing lessons call North Shore Surf Girls.
